Newly formed litter group launched in Goole A ‘Clean Goole Campaign Group’ has recently been launched with the aim of making the town litter-free can imagine the problem of littering is never-ending and unenviable task.

The new group is looking for like-minded people to advise which areas need attention to help these places become cleaner and safer. Our Goole chatted to Graham Toft to find out more about why the group was created and what its plans are for the future. Graham told Our Goole: “Given the many negative comments on social sites about the issue of litter and fly-tipping in Goole, there is a need for direct action by all who live there. “Despite vigorous actions by the town council, attempting to try and prevent litter and fly-tipping in Goole can be challenging. The council are doing a good job but as you

“The problem is, once the streets have been cleaned of rubbish, in the next few days litter will reappear on the streets. Sometimes residents know if they wait long enough the council will eventually come and collect their rubbish for them so they don’t have to dispose of it themselves.

“The council are doing a good job but as you can imagine the problem of littering is never-ending and unenviable task.” “There is also a need for more people to help clean the streets. Also a need to educate and get the message across to everyone about the benefits of disposing of their own rubbish. People need to use the bins that are provided or to use the nearby waste tip.

“Goole has so much potential and how better to make people feel proud of where they live - by having clean streets, gardens, parks and all other public areas. “Our objectives are to provide a clean and safe environment for everyone living in Goole, promoting the positives of living in cleaner streets and having litter-free parks. We want to encourage local people to participate in keeping Goole litter-free and to stop fly-tipping. “My first thought was to clean up areas members suggest. We are all in this together as a team, so any advice, comments or suggestions would be really good.” Membership is open to the whole community of all ages. People can become members by either joining online on Facebook ‘Clean Goole Campaign Group’, or by contacting grahamtoft123@ gmail.com.

FROM A POLICE Eastgate Flats update This month, the Goole Policing team updates us on its priority to tackle the issues at Eastgate Flats by working closely with East Riding of Yorkshire Council and commencing legal action against multiple tenancies

“We are holding an action day on Thursday 29th October - several agencies will be attending to give advice, take referrals and to engage with residents. The surgeries provide a good opportunity to speak to the police and council about any concerns you have or to seek any advice.

E PERSPECTIVE: Surgeries/action day We have now resumed our joint surgeries at flat 14, Eastgate, with the council. The next one will be this month - we will update the website and social media with dates. The surgeries provide a good opportunity to speak to the police and council about any concerns you have or to seek any advice. We are also holding an action day on Thursday 29th October - several agencies will be attending to give advice, take referrals and to engage with residents. We will put an update together on what agencies will be attending in the near future. Maintenance As part of the community priority, one of our actions is tidying up Eastgate inside and out. Yesterday the grounds maintenance team spent the day in Eastgate tidying up the communal garden areas, all of the bushes and hedges have been cut back, paraphenialla has also been cleared up as a result of tidying this up. We have plans to repaint the blocks. We are currently waiting for a date for this as unfortunately due to the current pandemic maintenance has been put on hold. Removal of benches The council has also removed all of the benches in the communal area of Eastgate due to several reports of ASB occurring when people were sat there. Reports consisted of large gatherings,

people drinking and also taking drugs. The police and council made the decision to remove these benches as a result of listening to these community concerns to prevent these issues occurring. Fly-tipping Several months ago we sent letters to all households giving advice about fly-tipping and warning people if they were caught committing this offence they would be prosecuted. East Riding Yorkshire Council (ERYC) has since issued a fine for fly tipping to an Eastgate resident as a result of them leaving white goods in the communal area of Eastgate and making no effort to remove them. The tenant has not paid the fine so ERYC will be prosecuting the tenant. It is not ERYC’s responsibility to clear up tenants belongings. The correct method needs to be used by disposing of the items correctly or by contacting ERYC on 01482 393939 to arrange for them to be picked up and to pay the removal fee. Fly tipping will not be tolerated. Anti-social behaviour As a result of anti-social behaviour occurring in Eastgate, several residents have been sent warning letters regarding their behaviour and to advise their actions are a breach of tenancy. We are also in the process of collating evidence for two tenants in Eastgate that have been served with a notice of seeking possession.

Salt and Pepper Trad things up in Goole A new and exciting project has recently launched in Goole. What was once an abattoir has now been turned into a shopping centre, with a new market which will be holding many family days, and farmers and a Christmas markets The Salt and Pepper Trading Estate opened on the 12th September and has big plans to support our local community and local businesses. You can find the fantastic new regeneration project next to the monument “Salt and Pepper Pot”. Here you can find a variety of local stalls from fresh produce, children’s entertainment, garden and house ornaments and lots more.

Our Goole has teamed up with the establishment to help get the word out there to show the town what it has to offer. Throughout the year there will be themed markets and events, and fun for all the family. There is also a cafe on site, the market is open seven days a week and there are still opportunities for more stalls to make the trading estate their new home. Our Goole chatted to Patrick Smith to find out more about the project and how the idea came about. Patrick told Our Goole: ’Our first week has gone very well. Not all stalls are open yet, but more will be opening in the next few weeks. However we have already received a lot of positive feedback on social media which is great to say we have not been open that long.

“The idea came about from my friends Jess and Eileen who owned the land and wanted to turn it into a market in which local businesses could pitch up and sell their products. We then started knocking down walls, fitting windows and doors and it all started coming together.

In the coming weeks the bakery, Feast 78, will be open and many other local businesses. We have also had people approach us to ask if they can set up a table on a weekend and sell their arts and crafts. We will do anything we can to give people a spot/stall to sell their products.

“Already we have furniture, fresh seasonal produce, children’s games, garden and house ornaments as well as a variety of arts and crafts for sale.

“Due to the coronavirus pandemic it is now more important than ever to support local businesses. All our visitors have been wearing masks and following social distancing rules which is great, and seeing people getting out and looking at the bargains.”

“It seems to be proving very popular with the community, each day more and more people are coming down to see what we have on offer. ‘Fish To Go’ and ‘Fruit & Veg To Go’ are now up and running, selling fresh produce at brilliant prices.

So to support our local businesses here in Goole, pop down to The Salt and Pepper Trading Estate where you just might find a bargain.

This month, Jobcentre Goole talks to us about the Government’s new £2billion scheme, designed to fund the direct creation of additional jobs for young people at risk of longterm unemployment

Kickstart Scheme The Kickstart Scheme provides funding to employers to create new six-month job placements for young people who are currently on Universal Credit and at risk of unemployment for the foreseeable future. The new scheme is part of the Government’s ‘Plan for Jobs’ and aims to create hundreds and thousands of new, fully funded jobs across England, Scotland and Wales. The first placements are likely to be available from November. As the economy starts to rebuild in the aftermath of Covid-19, we know that for many young people a lack of work experience can be a barrier to even getting a foot on the jobs ladder. That is why steps are being taken to help young people gain experience and secure their place in the world of work. Employers from all industries and across the private, public

and voluntary sectors can get involved, and we’re urging them to take advantage of government backing and give potential a chance. Through the scheme, employers will be able to access a large pool of young people with lots to offer who are ready for such an opportunity. The Kickstart Scheme provides funding to employers to create new six-month job placements for young people who are currently on Universal Credit.

Funding available for each job will cover the relevant National Minimum Wage (NMW) rate for 25 hours a week, plus the associated employer National Insurance contributions and employer minimum automatic enrolment contributions.

It will also include £1,500 to set up support and training for people on a Kickstart placement, as well as helping pay other set up costs. There will be extra funding to
