FOSTERING IN GOOLE: Turning lives around for young people

Every year, tens of thousands of children across the UK need foster carers while they can’t live with their own families. That means thousands of new foster carers are needed every year. There is currently a national shortage of foster carers and the East Riding fostering team are particularly looking for new carers in Goole and the surrounding area. Could you be one of them?

about fostering to get in touch with East Riding, their support has been excellent and the training for new carers is excellent.”

What is fostering?

There is no ‘ideal’ type of foster carer, everyone is unique and brings their own individual experience and abilities. The most important attributes are having time, patience, a sense of humour and the ability to love. Feeling comfortable with children is key and social and family life should be fun, supportive and include ground rules. It doesn’t matter if you are single or in relationship, retired, a home owner or living in rented accommodation.

Sometimes children are unable to live with their own family. This may be due to a crisis in the family, ill health, relationship difficulty or bereavement. It could also be because they have experienced abuse and need to be protected. Fostering is a way of providing a safe and caring family home for someone else’s child who is unable to live at home for a variety of reasons. Some children may only need to be fostered for a weekend and others may need to be looked after until they are adults. Fostering a child in need can be a very rewarding experience. Local foster carer Anita Woods, who lives near Goole has been a foster carer for 16 years and looked after a range of children including long term placements, respite and supported lodgings. Anita said: “The best thing about fostering is just being able to turn the lives around of some of these young people. “They come to you with lots of problems and sometimes challenging behaviour, and as you work with them, it is just so incredibly rewarding to see the changes and progress they make. The longer placements have become part of our family, and the best thing for us is just being able to make a difference to their lives for the better. “I would wholeheartedly recommend anyone thinking

Who can foster?

Why foster with East Riding of Yorkshire Council? We provide high quality training, comprehensive and dedicated support and a generous allowance to support the children whilst in your care. What is the next step? We would highly recommend attending an information event if you are able. These events are a great way to meet and chat with members of the team, foster carers and looked after children and have any questions answered that you may have. The next event is on Wednesday, May 25. How do I apply to foster? Contact the East Riding fostering team online at www.eastriding.gov.uk/fostering, via email on fish@eastriding.gov.uk or call 01482 396469 for an information pack. 5

FROM A POLICE

Crime levels remain steady in Goole Inspector Jo York of Goole Neighbourhood Policing Team reveals the current policing priorities, crime trends and issues being addressed by the Community Policing team

‘Goole as a whole has suffered 11% less crime in the last year, compared to the previous year’

6

Issue 003 - April 2016

E PERSPECTIVE: Figures for the Goole North and Goole South wards that make up the town, including Old Goole and the dock area show that 116 crimes were recorded in February, compared with 112 in January and 128 in December.

For your chance to meet your local neighbourhood policing team, the following police surgeries are being held:

On average, there is 3 times more crime recorded in the Goole South ward than the Goole North ward. Goole South accounts for a higher amount of shop theft as it includes the town centre and main supermarkets, and assaults and public order offences associated with the night time economy are linked to the main drinking area in the town. Goole as a whole has suffered 11% less crime in the last year, compared to the previous year.

PCSO Rosie Emerton will be available to discuss community issues and offer crime prevention advice between 10:00-11:00am on 5th April and 3rd May.

Goole Community Patrol have been closely monitoring anti-social behaviour in the areas of Goole town centre and Oak Avenue, Old Goole as a priority. A number of high visibility reassurance patrols have been used in these areas to deter potential anti-social behaviour. There are currently no particular crime trends, with the few offences being committed randomly. It is clear that offenders are looking at locations and vehicles prior to coming back to commit crimes. This could simply be someone looking around an area during the day, someone pretending to do door to door sales, or someone coming to your home on another pretext. So, if you get a ‘cold caller’ ask yourself: 1. Is the caller coming to my home in any way suspicious? 2. Is the caller paying attention to my car or house and asking me questions about it? If so, give Humberside Police a call on the non emergency number 101 to report your concerns.

Moorlands Centre, Old Goole PCSO Katie Hart will be available to discuss community issues and offer crime prevention advice between 10:00am-12:00noon on 15th April. Hook Village Shop

Below is some general crime prevention advice to keep you safe: 1. Keep your car keys safe and out of sight 2. Never hang them near to doors where they could be taken through a letterbox 3. Don’t leave your keys near an open window 4. Never leave house or car keys in an obvious place like a handbag or key cupboard 5. If you’ve got a garage, use it 6. Keep your vehicle locked and secured 7. If your car doesn’t have an alarm/ immobilizer then consider getting one fitted. 8. Consider extra security such as a steering wheel lock. (Steering locks and gear level locks are often all that is needed to deter a thief.) 9. Never leave any property in your vehicle when it is unattended. 10. There is also a growing trend for work vans to be targeted, so please keep valuable tools in your home.

Goole hosts first ever ‘Amazing Children’ awards

An extraordinary group of children from Goole are about to be treated to the party of a lifetime, thanks to a big-hearted local businesswoman.

all they do - be it battling an illness or suffering from a debilitating condition, coping with losing a family member, recovering from an accident or perhaps simply being little ‘troopers’ for their mummy, who is having a difficult time.”

Beth Taylor, who runs Goole’s Fun Run, has taken it upon herself to lavish a huge helping of love on some of the town’s most deserving youngsters. Beth has organised a community celebration, treating a special group of children to a ‘thank you’ party. Beth welcomes all manner of children to her soft-play facility, and is constantly astounded by some of the stories they bring along with them.

Beth sent out an online request for deserving youngsters to be nominated for the awards, and nine children were put forward. This means that later this month the Fun Run will host Goole’s first ‘Amazing Children Party’, with the nine lucky youngsters and five each of their friends enjoying a disco, party food, lashing of cake and a special trophy to take home to Mum. Amazing! If anyone would like to offer a contribution to the event or would like to help out on the night, please contact Beth on 07809745607. See the May edition of Our Goole for a follow-up on the fun celebrations.

Beth told Our Goole: “Each and every one of the children that come here are incredible, but once in a while I get to know the families and their life situations, and I’m just blown away by the number of fantastic children Goole has in its midst. “These children are simply amazing, and I think its about time someone gave them a little thank you for

The funding will be used to create a new facility on the central delivery suite at Scunthorpe General Hospital, which will be used for women who need additional care before or after delivery. Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust (NLaG) put in a bid for the money to the Department of Health’s preventing avoidable harm in maternity national fund, and were awarded a total of £31,428. Head of midwifery Julie Dixon said: “This is excellent news for local women as over the coming months we will be able to create this room specifically for those needing that extra bit of care.” Karen Cross, operational matron for maternity at Scunthorpe, said: “We currently have eight rooms on the unit, together with a birthing pool room. We will be using one of these to create the new high observational room which will have the latest monitoring equipment to hand.” The money will provide state-of-the-art anaesthetic monitors, blood monitors and a birthing simulator.

Funding wait

Issue 003 - April 2016

Sundays

A Swinefleet couple’s anxious wait for funding for their poorly son has been put back several weeks due to a mix up with dates. Our March issue explained how twenty onemonth-old Lucas Parry suffers from a severe form of cerebral palsy known as Spastic Quadriplegia.

Parents Tessa and Liam have applied for funding from Children in Need to build Lucas a specialised sensory room and will now have to wait until May to find out if this bid was successful. Despite this setback our article has sparked a wave of generosity and fundraising, with £1,240 having been raised within hours of its appearance. Kind-hearted readers made donations and many have pledged ongoing support in the form of fundraising efforts such as cake stalls and skydives, and there’s even a competitive pool match (Goole pool league and individual pool league) planned for April. Lucas has unfortunately had to endure another hospital

stay, due to a seizure caused by his recently diagnosed epilepsy. Consultants are hoping to get these under control and make life a little easier for Lucas and his worried family. Resilience continues to shine through though, as Tessa told Our Goole: ‘Despite his recent setback, there are still fantastic new milestones to report. Lucas has now mastered a new skill - the ‘commando shuffle’! We were told he would never walk or crawl, yet in the last week he has developed his own, unique tummy shuffle! He can’t sit still, and is in to everything!’ To make a donation towards the £7,000 (remaining total) needed for Lucas’ sensory room, go to: https://crowdfunding.justgiving. com/littlelucas?utm_source=Facebook

y k s e h t r o f reaching Youngsters in Goole are learning new skills and taking their confidence to a whole new level, thanks to a unique ‘build a plane’ charity that even offers them the opportunity to learn to fly. The Spirit of Goole (TSOG) is run solely by volunteers and totally reliant on donations, and the charity are seeking help in their bid to raise £20,000 to finish building and running their own, fully operational Sherwood Ranger bi-plane. A whole host of engineers, pilots and volunteers work hard to inspire, encourage and motivate students from Goole Academy, who in turn gain experience in everything from design, construction and engineering through to IT, media and marketing. Each one of them also gets the chance to gain their pilots licence and go on to fly the plane, which will remain in Goole once completed and be used to provide flying lessons to students. The charity’s moto is: ‘Aim high, think big, achieve something amazing’ - and they have certainly lived up to that ethos. They have inspired their budding aviators to reach dizzy heights in the last two years, with the like of past students Katie Dennis, a former Goole High pupil having gone on to be a mechanic with the Royal Air Force and Tom Lloyd (18) is now an apprentice for an engineering company.

The charity launched in 2012, with the ‘build’ beginning in September 2013. Since then over 50 local youngsters have worked on the aircraft and the maiden flight is fast approaching. Jack Milnes, Chairman and Project Manager of TSOG told Our Goole: “We have just finished covering the plane, and will be conducting engine testing in April. If all the paperwork goes to plan we will be ready to test fly in late May - the finish is very close.”

The original funding target for the year was £20,000 and TSOG still need to raise £16,000 to complete the build and cover insurance and initial operational costs for the aircraft. Since the early days TSOG has received incredible support from local individuals and companies -

Goole Business Group, Carlisle DIY, Airmyn Garage, Goole & District Lottery, Drax, McDonners, BAE Systems and the Barnes Wallis Foundation to name but a few. Not only are they working hard on the plane project and running their Air Academy, the charity have recently received a donation of a different kind - a 40ft steel hulled sailing yacht! This means planning is now underway for a new Goole project - ‘Build a boat’, and TSOG team are in the early stages of setting up a partnership with the Sobriety Project and Goole’s Waterways Museum to enable that. These motivational ventures are a fantastic opportunity for personal development and for Goole’s youngsters to see where their talents lie, and support them in future career decisions. Donations help to give these young people the chance to achieve something amazing - and potentially life-changing. If you would like to be involved in sponsoring or helping these projects, from as little as £1 per week, visit https:// mydonate.bt.com/charities/ thespiritofgoole for details. 15

Sgt Ryan Reed of Goole Community Policing Team recently spoke to Our Goole to explain the ‘fantastic’ team effort behind Goole’s Youth Coalition, and the calming effect this has had on incidents of antisocial behaviour. “In November 2014 Phil Jackson of East Riding Youth and Family Support Services, amongst others, identified a need for more activities in the Goole area aimed at young people. “This was of concern because good youth provision is strongly linked to better outcomes for young people in later life - for example finding employment and keeping away from criminality. It was clear that there was some provision, but in a time of financial austerity delivering any improvements was going to be a difficult thing to achieve. “With this in mind a local group was formed called the Youth Coalition. It looked to bring together a number of local partners with a track record of working with young people. Many of these were from already existing stake holders within the East Riding of Yorkshire Council, 18

Issue 003 - April 2016

‘Fantastic’ effort sees Goole pull together to provide positive youth programme An influential activity programme for young people in Goole has proved so successful that organisers are planning to expand it even further this year. but many were not. Some of those included the Crime Commissioners Office and Humberside Police, Goole Academy, The Courtyard, Castaways, New Life Church, Groundworks, Goole Community Youth Group and the Sobriety Project. The idea was to see what could be achieved by working together and pooling collective resources and skills.

“Incredibly by the summer of 2015 the group had managed to organise a summer programme of activities for local young people that catered for a variety of tastes. The programme was based on what local young people said they wanted - a diverse range of activities from art to football, judo to music and craft was provided. Over 3,000 young people attended the 7 week programme, with over 6,000 hours of activity enjoyed. The ripple effect of this was that the community of Goole enjoyed a 13% reduction in antisocial behaviour.

“As far as the coalition is concerned this was just a starting point and plans continue to develop what is on offer. Looking to the future more programmes are being planned for summer 2016 as well as more term time activities. The programmes are inclusive but there will be some work around offering more targeted activities for those who may not readily engage, and may be becoming involved in antisocial related behaviour.” Championing the huge team effort involved in pulling together the range of positive activities on offer, Coalition Chairman Phil Jackson explained to Our Goole: “The staggering success of last year’s programme saw an average of 73 young people attending these sessions each day, and that’s exactly what we’re striving for. The main aim of the initiative is to see the youth of Goole enjoying the same level of activities available elsewhere. “The success of the Goole Youth Coalition is down to all the key partners working together, listening to young people about what diversionary positive activity they want and then delivering a diverse programme of activities. Our aim in 2016 is to expand the summer programme and to offer more activities during the autumn and winter months.” 19

Dog owners urged to take note of the new microchipping law With the microchipping law change now in effect dog owners within the area are being warned by the District Council to ensure that their dogs are microchipped, or otherwise face a significant fine. The law change, which came into effect from 6th April 2016, requires that dog owners nationwide have all dogs over the age of eight weeks microchipped, with those who are found to break the law facing a fine of up to £500. However beyond merely complying with the law there are numerous other reasons that make a clear case for microchipping a dog, including the peace of mind that, should a dog be lost or stolen, they can be reunited with their owner more quickly than if they were microchip free. Additional benefits include: • Puppies being traceable to their breeder – which can ultimately deter would-be puppy farmers;

20

• Ability to identify, and go on to arrest, those who inflict animal cruelty; • Vets being able to quickly contact owners where a pet is found and in need of emergency treatment. • Deterring dog thefts; If your dog hasn’t as yet been microchipped then you should contact your vet. Whilst costs for this service vary, there is a national network of approved specialist centres who provide this service for free, including Dogs Trust and the Farming and Rural Affairs Organisation. If you do already have a microchipped dog, but are uncertain as to whether your details are up-to-date, a vet can also scan your dog – this is usually free of charge, as is any subsequent change of details made with the microchipping company.

pushing it to the limit Kizzy Blue Wade, from Spaldington is doing our region proud by taking part in an amazing challenge of endurance in her wheelchair, to raise funds for specialised sports equipment to allow her to pursue her love of sports.

Eleven-year-old Kizzy suffers from Spastic Quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy, which affects all four of her limbs. She recently set herself an immense challenge to complete crossings of three of the UK’s largest bridges: the Humber Bridge in Hull, The Forth Road Bridge in Scotland and the Severn Bridge in Wales in her manual racing wheelchair, over three consecutive Sundays in March.

This minor detail wasn’t going to deter the plucky youngster, who began fundraising for the £5,000 needed to have her own sit ski made. Deciding she didn’t want to simply ask for donations, Kizzy wanted to complete a challenge in order to earn the donations, and the ‘Three Bridge Challenge’ was born.

This challenge is a real test of endurance for Kizzy, who is a full time wheelchair user. Despite her disability, Kizzy enjoys all kinds of sports, including Wheelchair Basketball, Sit Skiing and Power-Chair Football.

With the Severn Bridge and Forth Road Bridge parts of the challenge completed by mid-March, Kizzy still had the Humber Bridge crossing to endure as Our Goole went to press, before her challenge is complete.

Although Kizzy enjoys many sports, she excels at Powerchair Football, and has climbed the ranks of the East Riding Electric Eels team to gain a place in both the regional and the national league team, and in fact is the only under 16 female to play at this level in the country.

Pushing herself across the bridges totally independently, this has been an epic challenge in a manual wheelchair for this distance and a true test of endurance.

Last year Kizzy was given the opportunity to try a new sport - sit skiing. After throwing herself off the top of the main ski slope at Castleford’s Snozone, she was hooked. Despite being told it would take her six years to gain the skill and confidence to be able to start to learn to ski independently, within just six months she was tentatively attempting independent skiing. The only obstacle to her progress is that the correct equipment isn’t available to use, due to the fact that it is rare for someone so young to be pursuing this sport. 22

Never letting her disability define who she is and inspiring others through her determination to ‘have a go’ at anything and refusing to give up, for someone so young Kizzy’s attitude to life is inspiring. When asked recently if she would change anything about her disability, Kizzy replied: ‘No way, I wouldn’t be doing the amazing things I do if I didn’t have cerebral palsy.’ Kizzy’s fundraising page can be found at https:// www.gofundme.com/ga4hhdmc All donations will go towards buying Kizzy her own sit-ski, so she can continue with sports and hopefully go on to compete.

This month business and marketing expert Alan Hemingway explains the vital importance of apprenticeship schemes and what they can bring to your business.

Smart students look at an alternative to university As thousands of A-level students begin their final revision for their examinations which are starting soon, more 18-year-olds are now taking a different route than the traditional one of A-levels and then university. When I was that age that was what you did if you wanted the best chance of a great career, get a university degree and then start on the employment ladder. This traditional approach is now changing with the introduction of tuition fees and the growth of student debt and more and more

18-year-olds are deciding to go straight in to work and missing out on university. The growth of apprenticeships in to new areas is meaning that the traditional trades based apprenticeships are not the only ones available to young people. The expansion of apprenticeships into areas such as accountancy and other professions now means that careers that often necessitated degrees are now seeing the benefits of employing young people as apprentices and training them up to satisfy shortages in the labour market of skilled labour. I must confess to being slightly biased with this because when I started my business 6 years ago it was just me, but after 3 years of working by myself, I took my first apprentice on. When Evie joined me the plan was she would begin her AAT qualification which would be 3 years

Issue 003 - April 2016 and then she would progress on to her Chartered Management Accountant qualification for the next 3 years. A year later Ruby joined us as an 18-year-old and just under a year ago, Dave joined Hemingway Bailey at 18. All three of them are progressing really well and they each make a great contribution to the business, the firm would be a lot less dynamic if they were not with us. There are a lot of really talented young people out there who want the opportunity to shine and as an employer, you can offer that chance to a young person by taking them on as an apprentice. As I know from my business, they help you to grow and contribute greatly to your success. For the A-level students, getting a quality apprenticeship like my team have at Hemingway Bailey means that they will not have any student debt and will be earning AND learning. Whilst their peers are at university, my team are picking up valuable work experience and professional qualifications, which will give them an advantage over university graduates. So whilst you are revising during those warm Spring days, do please consider an apprenticeship as a great alternative to university.

Goole Photographer puts business in the picture

Master photographer Colin Wallwork opened the doors to Photography@ Wallworks on Carlisle Street, Goole in September 2015 with the help and support of Goole Development Trust (GDT). Colin provides bespoke photographic services from his large, modern ground floor studio. Specialising in portraits, clients enjoy a relaxed and fun experience with stylish and modern results. Renowned throughout Yorkshire and the North of England for his different approach to professional photography, Colin has photographed Prime Ministers, royalty, MPs and many dignitaries over the years. His respectful yet humorous rapport and uniquely personal approach ensure stunning results from every assignment. Colin also specialises in ‘on location’ photoshoots, and his many multi-award winning commissions have taken him to countless prestigious events, weddings, portrait sittings and black-tie balls. A loan from ‘The Start Up Loans’ scheme helped Colin with his initial costs and building refurbishments to open his Goole studio, allowing him to produce a professional environment for his clientele. Explaining how crucial the support of GDT was in launching his business into the town, Colin told Our Goole: ‘The help I received enables me to attend local trade-shows and has allowed me to do the much needed refurbishment to the building – which has now built an excellent reputation in the area for creating bespoke photography.’

Among other services Instant passport, baby passports and Visa photographs are available, often with no appointment and guaranteed to be accepted. You can drop in to the studio to contact Colin or call 01405 947373, or indeed visit his website at www. photographyatwallworks.com If you’re looking to start your own business, or even expand your current one, then Goole Development Trust can help. Your business idea could be the start of a whole new future.

Business of the

This month we cast the spotlight on local event hire and planning company Light Heart Events.

month Offering a wide range of hire and planning services for all event types ranging from children’s parties and weddings to corporate functions, founder and director Ben Franks gives Our Goole a peek behind the doors of the successful business. Ben, tell us a little about your business and the service you provide: Light Heart Events was founded in January of 2016. We specialise in the support of public and corporate events through our hire facilities as well as offering planning and sourcing skills to all our customers. We are the only company that we know of that offers discounted planning and hire rates to registered UK charities no matter their cause. What inspired you into this line of work and to launch your business? I spent the majority of my life in the Armed Forces. In doing so I saw a great deal of the world that was less fortunate than ourselves. In such areas of the world can be found charitable organisations aiming to help those whom suffer. When I left the military I wanted to apply my military experiences to a line of work that required good organisational skills, honesty and an ability to deal with people from all walks of life, event management and

28

therefore Light Heart was born of this desire. Fundamentally, and after much research I understood the UK event industry to be worth roughly £8billion, within it however charitable organisations are treated, in general, as any other corporate client. And so I bore the principle of Light Heart offering charities help in form of discounted rates. Have you had any notable milestones/events along the way? We are now firmly established within the Wedding Day Event field having recently attended and displayed some of our beautiful wedding lighting options at the recent Carlton Towers Wedding Event. We are appearing at the same venue again in October, where we will be showcasing our Photo Box systems to the public.

we provide them, they unwind and have a great time and the pictures we see often show this. What does the future hold for Light Heart Events? Light Heart is still very young but its vision is large. I hope to see Light Heart grow for the right reasons in that we offer events costings that are reasonable in comparison to what most people often pay, yet there is no loss in service nor professionalism. In time I would like Light Heart to be the first company considered by UK charities to help with their planning and event hire plans as well as continuing to support Weddings, Parties, Corporate Functions and all other domestic events.

Do you have any extraordinary stories to share with our readers?

Lastly, what are the main benefits you find to advertising in our magazines?

We have a lot. It’s great being able to offer customers systems like our Photo Boxes for hire or our Hot Tubs for example. We encourage photography and some of the pictures we receive are great to see because people enjoy what

Distribution levels are good, the canvassing options are reasonably priced and the journey from inquiry to advertisement is smooth and not a murky water, as I have often found elsewhere.

This month property expert David Leake, of Housesetc explains the importance of generating an impressive first impression.

The key to kerb appeal and presenting your garden Gardens are too often forgotten in the race to make the most of a property, but their condition can sometimes be the deciding factor on value. It’s a common-held belief that the decision on whether or not to buy a property is made within the first few moments of viewing it. The state of the front garden is therefore a prime consideration for anyone choosing to sell their home, and with spring upon us, now is an ideal time to get those green fingers working! • Drive-by desirability is all important as first impressions really do count.

• Make sure your front garden is neat, tidy and easily maintained. Hanging baskets and flower troughs establish the cared-for look without creating too much work. Any lawn areas should be neatly trimmed, and trees cut back and controlled. A wellpresented front door, with pots alongside it, goes a long way towards generating a homely welcome. • The back of the house is where the most work is likely to lie. Today’s busy lifestyle means many people don’t have much time to spend on gardening, so creating some low maintenance

Issue 003 - April 2016 areas is invaluable. Decking, paving and woodchips can be used to differentiate areas of the garden and simplify them, often generating a very desirable ‘outside room’ space, which will be attractive to buyers. • Smaller and larger gardens alike will also benefit from the definition of specific areas for herbs, flowers and vegetables. • Those with larger gardens should try to create a sense of flow within the space, which draws the visitor in and avoids the garden area being perceived as an undefined ‘patch’ of land. This can be done using well positioned pathways, lawns, pots and flowerbeds. • Any trees and hedges should be kept under control and fences maintained. • If there is space, you could consider installing a summer house and a shed. • Boost the value of your house, by improving your home in these relatively inexpensive ways. You may find this enjoyable; and further more it will make your house more attractive when the time comes to sell. It can also enhance the general streetscape and consequently the perception of the area as a desirable place to live. This will raise house prices all round, thereby keeping both you and the whole neighbourhood happy!
