INTRODUCTION

Hello and welcome to your April edition of Our Goole.

The clocks have gone forward, the nights are getting lighter, and the days should start to get warmer. For many, the winter we have just been through which will have been tough. However, we did it and hopefully the next few months should be easier.

This month, we announce the finalists at this year’s Goole & Howdenshire Business Excellence Awards and we are delighted that CreateTVT, which publishes this magazine, is nominated in the category ‘Small Business of the Year’.

As always, we will keep you up to date with the latest from the awards and good luck to all who have been shortlisted. As always, our friendly team is just an email or phone call away to help you with all your advertisement needs and answer any questions you may have.

HOWDEN VINTAGE DAY HOLDS KING’S CORONATION CELEBRATIONS

We had a chat with Sophie Brooke from the group to find out more about the event and what people can expect to see on the day.

Howden Vintage Day holds coronation celebrations

Join the community of Howden as it enjoy a fabulous free day of vintage fun to celebrate the King’s coronation

Taking place on Saturday 6th May, you can expect fun for all the family with live music, classic vehicles, traders, fashion displays, a vintage plane fly past, face painting and much more. Plus, the King’s coronation footage will be screened by Howden Shire Hall throughout the day.

The festivities then carry on into the night with the HVD Evening Dance at Howden Shire Hall with live music from The Corsairs and DJ Major Swing.

Howden Vintage Day was born in 2018 when a group of like-minded individuals from Howden came together to discuss the idea of having a town wide vintage-themed celebration, similar to that held in Pickering and Crowle. The 2018 and 2019 events were a huge success. The

event was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic, however, in 2022, the current committee took the reins, and the event is back bigger than ever! 2023 will see the event celebrating its fourth running year and is going from strength to strength!

Our Goole had a chat with Sophie Brooke to find out more about the event.

Sophie said: “From 12pm onwards on Saturday 6th May, visitors can enjoy the free daytime event taking place in Howden Market Place and Howden Shire Hall.

“The BBC footage of the King’s coronation will be live streamed for visitors to celebrate the day as a community in the Shire Hall.

“As a volunteer committee, we are really looking forward to seeing the community of Howden come together to celebrate The King’s Coronation with dancing and live music. Last year’s event attracted over 2,000 people from near and far, and we can’t wait to show everyone what Howden has to offer once again.”

The HVD Evening Dance takes place in Howden Shire Hall from 7.30pm-11.30pm, with live music from The Corsairs and DJ Major Swing. Tickets are £12.50pp and are available at www. howdenshirehall.co.uk or call 01430 432510.

Young people in our area take part in ‘Night Challenge’

POLICE PERSPECTIVE:

In this issue of Our Goole, Goole Policing Team talks to us about the immersive experience of Night Challenge, specifically designed for young people who may have a negative impression of the police and partner agencies

Last month, young people from across the region put on their walking boots and came together to tackle the Humberside Police Night Challenge.

A total of 111 young people walked nearly 13 miles around the Brantingham Dales whilst tackling a number of thought-provoking challenges along the way.

The Police also work hard to teach them team work, communication, relationship building and leadership skills throughout the course of the walk.

Supervisors from a wide range of partners took part in the event, including the police, fire service and the Army. This allowed us to demonstrate how community safety agencies work together to tackle ongoing issues.

Youth Engagement Sergeant Nick Bunker said: “We have been delighted to work with our partners to deliver Night Challenge once again this year. It is a fantastic initiative that helps us interact with young people from all over the force area in a way that we wouldn’t normally be able to.

“It provides an opportunity for young people to spend time with community safety partners in a challenging environment to help build confidence, self-esteem and life skills.

“It is a challenge for all young people taking part – including the adults who supervise them on the route. Teams are able to talk to each other about a wide range of issues and this allows us to learn about what’s important to them, whilst giving advice and information that will help them in the future.”

The event is organised each year by the Community Safety Unit at Humberside Police who work with local organisations to bring the story together and make the event a continued success.

Community Engagement Coordinator Kerry Hirons said: “So many of our partners come together to make the event happen. We spend months planning how best to give young people the confidence to know they can achieve something that they wouldn’t normally try.

“It was great seeing the teams go out into the night and come back happy, covered in mud and so proud of themselves and their team mates.”

“All of those who have taken part this year will be invited to an awards ceremony in May to celebrate all their hard work and announce the winning teams.”

The event has been made possible by principal sponsors, the Tribune Trust.

Lifetime Achievement Award. Garrey Haase, Chair of the organising committee, said: “Once again, our judges had a fine field of entries to choose from and it was pleasing to see a number of businesses entering the awards for the first time.

“The last few years have been incredibly challenging for businesses due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the unpredictable economic situation, so we’re very much looking forward to celebrating the successes of our shortlisted finalists at this year’s awards ceremony. Thank you to everyone who entered, and we wish all of our finalists the very best of luck.”

The black-tie event will take place on Friday 14th April at Goole Academy. Following the untimely passing of television presenter Harry Gration, who

had compered the event since it was first launched, the event will be hosted by Blair Jacobs, a former presenter for BBC Radio Humberside.

The organising committee are also pleased to announce that Hull-born Amy Gledhill, a comedian, actor, writer and winner of The BBC Caroline Aherne Bursary will be performing for guests at the Goole and Howdenshire Business Excellence Awards.
