INTRODUCTION Hello and welcome to your April issue of Our Goole! Easter is here already and the year seems to be going by so fast. We’re enjoying all the chocolate here in the office, there’s no such thing as too much! Now the weather is getting better, after what seemed like an endless winter, it’s nice to get out and about and see the streets in the town filling up with people again. The town centre has seemed deserted for such a long time so it was nice for me to take a walk recently and

see people milling about and chatting in the sunshine. One of my favourite things about our town is the people, there is always someone to stop and chat to, a friendly face around every corner! We’ve got some great news stories in this issue so put the kettle on and have a read. Please remember to contact us if you’d like to appear in our pages or on our website, we’d love to hear from you! See you in May! Anne Howard Webb sent us this beautiful cover photo taken in West Park. Thank you, Anne!

The Goole group helping children and young adults with additional needs Unique Friends launched in August 2016 and is run by a voluntary trust committee of parents and carers of children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) and additional needs. The group’s aim is to provide a safe, relaxed, inclusive environment for the children and young adults up to the age of 25 as well as offering a support network for their families Amanda Best, chair of trustees for the group, said: “Unique Friends is a support group for children and young adults with SEND or disabilities and their families. We offer fully inclusive activities, days out and support for all of 6

the family. We also signpost families to other agencies and we have recently hosted two coffee mornings for parents and carers, which were a huge success. “As parents of children with additional needs, we have all

been in their shoes and we offer help, support and advice to families who are in the process of diagnosis or who already have one.” The group, which meets every third Saturday of the month at Junction, Goole, as well

as putting on other events throughout the year, rotates the activities it does with the children and parents are encouraged to join in too. Amanda said: “Examples of what we do include arts and crafts, games, soft play, dance, music, sensory play, Lego, gardening, cooking and life skills. We also invite outside services to provide sessions suitable for the families that attend. Some of the parents have non-verbal children, so you can pick up some signs too while you’re there, if you wish to learn!” Unique Friends is also the local TSB bank branch charity partner for the year, which is a huge boost to the group. Sessions cost £3 for a child with SEND/ disabilities and

£1.50 for each child thereafter. Parents and carers go free. The group holds various other events throughout the year, including family fun days, dance sessions, game sessions and informal coffee mornings.

Unique Friends is also the local TSB bank branch charity partner for the year, which is a huge boost to the group You can find a full list of events on the Facebook page, @uniquefriendsgoole, or by visiting the website www.uniquefriends.org.uk.

Amanda added: “Lots of work goes on behind the scenes planning the future of the group. All the trustees put a lot of time and effort into providing the sessions and we are all excited for what the future has in store for us as a group.” The group is also looking for volunteers to join the committee and help run sessions. If you are interested, please contact Amanda on 07713 156232 or via the group’s email uniquefriends@gmail.com for more information. Amanda added: “We would welcome anyone who would like to come onboard with us!” 7

running a Marathon to raise money for a mental health hospital A local woman is tackling the London Marathon to raise funds for The Retreat Hospital in York, which supports people with mental health needs Amanda Midgley-Bliss, who is originally from Howden and now lives in Breighton with her husband and three daughters, decided to take up the challenge to support users at her work.

Amanda added: “I would really like to reach my £1,000 target for the Katherine Allen Unit, which I work on, as well as another £800 to buy an iPad, which would help some of our patients with later-stage dementia.

Amanda told Our Goole: “I have never run a marathon before in my life, but when I was asked at work if I would volunteer I was eager to apply despite the fact that I have never had any training! The Retreat Hospital in York, where I work, is a mental health hospital that takes care of vulnerable people that need lots of support.

“If anyone can donate to this wonderful hospital I would hugely appreciate it. By raising the money, it will allow The Retreat Hospital to continue making the lives of our patients that little bit easier, by providing the quality care we pride ourselves on.”

Mental health is a big problem worldwide. People may not have enough experience with dealing with mental health issues and this leaves people alone and feeling isolated.

FROM A POLICE

Protect you

This month, Sgt David Lonsdale explains how best to protect our invaluable devices from theft

Always be aware of your mobile and your whereabouts, act accordingly and when you’ve finished using it, put it away

10

Issue 027-April 2018

E PERSPECTIVE:

ur devices Your mobile is so much more than a phone. It’s your phone book, internet, email, social media, maps, personal banker, camera, photo library and weather forecaster. That’s why we strongly advise you to read on, to see how you can prevent yourself from being a victim of mobile theft.

• Don’t leave your phone, iPad, tablet or camera unattended, out of your sight or left on a table – thieves can grab a phone in seconds.

• Track it. Consider installing a tracker app on your smartphone. They’re readily available online.

• Always be aware of your mobile and your whereabouts, act accordingly and when you’ve finished using it, put it away.

Community priorities

• Ensure you retain a record of your phone’s IMEI number. This is a 15-digit unique number which can be obtained by keying in *#06#. You need this information if the phone is lost or stolen. And don’t keep a note of it on your phone as it defeats the object.

• Use your device’s security features, apps or PIN locking mechanisms to protect your data and prevent the phone being used if stolen. • Register for free on an accredited mobile

phone database such as Immobilise. This helps police to identify you as the rightful owner. This is a free web-based, secure property registration system. It is endorsed and searchable by all 43 UK Police Forces. Fill in the online form and create your own account – you will receive an email from Immobilise confirming your account name and password.

Throughout last month, staff from Goole Communities Team continued with high visibility reassurance patrols in Goole town centre and Old Goole to deter potential anti-social behaviour as well as monitoring ‘no drinking zone’ areas. Other areas the communities team focused on were Five Rivers, Jackson Street and Carter Street, where anyone caught engaging in such activities will be dealt with jointly by the police and East Riding Council. The police will continue to monitor these areas this month with the aim of preventing such activity.

EAST RIDING CHILDREN’S CENTRES CELEBRATE ‘BABY FRIENDLY’ AWARD East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s children’s centres, two of which are in Goole, are celebrating after achieving international recognition for a baby-friendly initiative The children’s centres, including Kingsway Children’s Centre and Marshland Children’s Centre, have successfully achieved full accreditation in the UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiative, a worldwide programme of the World Health Organisation and UNICEF. The initiative is designed to support breastfeeding and parent-infant relationships by working with public services to improve standards of care. It aims to ensure that all parents make informed decisions about feeding their babies and are supported in their chosen feeding method. The UNICEF UK Baby Friendly Initiative accreditation process takes several years to achieve and is a nationally recognised mark of quality care for babies and mothers. The children’s centres have gained full Stage 3 accreditation through a process of assessments looking at policies, staff education and

interviews with parents about the care that families receive. The assessment team commended staff for the efforts made, and said it was clear that pregnant women and new mothers receive a very high standard of care. “It was evident the needs of pregnant women, mothers and their families were placed at the centre for all care planning, resulting in a service responsive to their needs and much appreciated by all those interviewed,” their report said. Councillor Julie Abraham, the council’s portfolio holder for children, young people and education, said: “Children’s centres across the East Riding are committed to giving every child the best start in life and this accreditation is an important recognition of their work towards this aim. I would like to congratulate everyone who worked so hard to achieve it.”

Topsy Turvy fun at Junction A top theatre production aimed at young children is taking to the stage at the end of this month Topsy Turvy Theatre presents Christopher Nibble at Junction on Saturday, April 28th. The brand new musical play, which is touring the country, stars Christopher Nibble and his best friend Posie, who have been busy growing plants and food in their garden while taking care of their six hairy pet caterpillars. But when their crawly comrades disappear, the gardening guinea pigs have to turn detective! Will Christopher and Posie crack the case and bring their caterpillars home to Dandeville… or have they vanished forever? Topsy Turvey Theatre was set up in 2010 with a desire to create high-quality theatre with meaningful learning opportunities for children. The company tours theatres and schools nationwide and specialises in puppetry and interactive scenery. 18

The Christopher Nibble show at Junction is full of handmade puppets, original music and stunning scenery and when it finishes at 3.30pm, the fun doesn’t stop there. Straight after, children and their big people will be able to join Topsy Turvy Theatre’s actors to explore how caterpillars transform into butterflies in a practical and fun workshop using drama and dance. It’s a great opportunity for young people to learn more about life cycles and meet some of the puppets from the production. The show runs for 45 minutes and is perfect for children ages two to seven and their big people too. The show starts at 2pm and tickets are priced at £6.50 for an adult and £5 for a child. The workshop starts at 3.30pm and tickets for that are £3 - available from the Junction box office on 01405 763652 or online at www.junctiongoole.co.uk

This month, Business Support Specialist Heidi Green discusses customer satisfaction

Just what does your customer want? Understanding what your customers want is the key to increasing your sales. Give them what they want and you will get what you want – more sales!

The first thing a customer wants is a solution to their problems. Do they buy storage space to solve the problem of a cluttered house? Is it a train ticket to get to their chosen destination? Are they buying peace of mind with insurance? So, get

thinking about what your service or product solves for your client. Many businesses just do not deliver on their promises so people are afraid you won’t deliver on yours, so therefore you have to prove that you can be trusted. Offer free trials of your product or service, 30 minutes free advice can lead to months of work. Demonstrations and samples always help to prove you can deliver what you say. What about a 100% money-back

Issue 027-April 2018 guarantee if your customer is not happy? Use testimonials from previous happy clients, this is others saying you deliver on promises. Customers also want clarity. Don’t use jargon and ensure your ordering process is easy. Find out the problems your prospects want solving, think about how you will solve it, be generous with your time and any samples you give and ensure the customer knows you are there for them. This will set you apart from the competition and build trust with your customers. PARALEGAL AT HEPTONSTALLS

Top reasons for making a will Making a will is possibly one of the most important things you can do. Not only will a Will legally protect your spouse or partner, but you can also set out exactly how you would like your assets to be dealt with after your death. Although everyone’s situation can vary, below are the top reasons why we think a will should be made. Protect your family and minor children You can set out in your will who should take care of your minor children in the event of your death before they reach 18. By making a will you are ensuring that the right person or people look after your children. The process will be faster after your death When making a will, you set out exactly how your estate is divided and who will deal with this. They can act as soon as you die as your will gives them the authority to do so. You can set out how your estate will be distributed A will clearly sets out your wishes as to how you would like your assets dealt with on your death. If you die having not made a will, your estate is dealt with in accordance with certain rules (called the Rules of Intestacy) and there is no guarantee that your intended wishes will be carried out. To make a will or for further information about how Heptonstalls could help you, please call us on 0800 917 8267 or visit www.heptonstalls.co.uk 25

Redundancy is a form of dismissal from your job. Finding yourself in this position can be very overwhelming, frightening and demoralising. Knowing your rights and where to seek help can keep you focused rather than floundering.

Redundancy: Do you know your rights? If you’re being made redundant, you might be eligible for certain rights, including redundancy pay, a notice period, a consultation with your employer, the option to move into a different job and time off to find a new job You must be selected for redundancy in a fair way, for example because of your level of experience or capability to do the job.You can’t be selected because of age, gender, or if you’re disabled or pregnant - this could be classed as an unfair dismissal.

skills, qualifications and experience

Being selected for redundancy

Unfair selection

Your employer should use a fair and objective way of selecting you for redundancy. Commonly used methods are: • last in, first out • asking for volunteers • disciplinary records • staff appraisal markings, 34

Your employer can make you redundant without having to follow a selection process if your job no longer exists, for example, if the company is closing down and is making all employees redundant. It would be classed as unfair dismissal for many different reasons, including if you were made redundant based purely on your gender, sexual orientation, race or disability or if you are on maternity leave. Reapplying for your own job

You might be asked to reapply for your own job, which could help your employer decide who to select. If you don’t apply or you’re unsuccessful, you’ll still have a job until your employer makes you redundant. Appealing the decision You can appeal if you feel that you’ve been unfairly selected. Write to your employer explaining the reasons. You may be able to make a claim to an employment tribunal for unfair dismissal. For further information on redundancy please visit www. gov.uk/redundant-your-rights or Acas - www.acas.org.uk
