INTRODUCTION
meet the staff
Hello and welcome to your April edition of Our Goole. Spring is finally here! Brighter and hopefully better days are ahead and we certainly cannot wait to get sat out in the garden. The loosening on some restrictions means we can finally meet up with a family member or friend, and even have a few friends round in the garden. We hope everyone is treasuring getting reacquainted with their loved ones. In this edition we speak to Groovy Moo in Howden who have reopened as a takeaway service so we can all still get our ice cream and sweet-treat fix. This is perfect timing
Page 4
as we will soon be craving an ice cream when all the hot weather comes (we are being optimistic…) As always, Goole is vowing to do its best to shine a light on all the fantastic people and businesses we have in and around the area. Our amazing front cover shot is taken by Fibre Environmental. If you would like any information on how to get your business in the magazine, please get in touch with a member of our friendly team. So for now, sit back with a cuppa and enjoy your latest edition of Our Goole. We will see you again in May.

From a popular butch thriving laundrette Spin & Dry Laundrette is now in its fifth year and continues to grow as a business. However, the popular business wasn’t always a laundrette. The building used to be home to Nightingale Butchers in the 1950s, where the community would get their meat fix. The business was also a huge success before Spin & Dry took over in 2016 We take a look back at the building and have a chat with current owner Nichola Holgate to find out more about Spin & Dry. Nichola told Our Goole: “The butchers was owned by Mr Nightingale in the late 1950s. He was the ‘big I am’ back in the day for Goole. In the 1960s, he handed it over to his sons who continued to run the butchers and also added a huge extension on. Then Ronnie Nightingale finally sold the premises to Spin & Dry and the transformation began to turn a popular butchers into a completely different business that would hopefully be just as successful. “We’re in our fifth year and are going from strength to strength, even taking contracts in Immingham and Keadby. We have extended our service hours due to being so popular and aiming to ensure we can meet all our customers needs. Our five-star reviews and fantastic feedback from customers keeps us going and shows we offer a brilliant service. “With the uncertainty of the past year, I Page 6
am happy we are still able to be a thriving business. We sanitise the full shop to adhere with government guidelines. We also offer a delivery service seven days a week to ensure the customers who cannot make it to the laundrette can still have their washing completed. “We were proud to be runner-up in 2019 and then the winners in 2020 of the ‘Small Business of the Year (10 employees or less)’ at the Goole & Howdenshire Business Excellence Awards. “We cannot wait for the wedding venues, hair salons and hotels to reopen as many of our commercial customers have been forced to close for the past year. “We look forward to the future and hope to grow even more as the world begins to slowly return to some kind of normality. “I am so proud of my business and happy that I can continue the thriving and successful legacy the Nightingale Butchers also had.” For more information on Spin & Dry Laundrette, please visit them on Facebook.

FROM A POLICE
Latest policin This month, Inspector Jon Powell updates Our Goole readers on the Goole Policing Team’s latest priorities and how the year has gone so far
“Regardless of Covid-19, our policing focus remains to protect the most vulnerable, keep people safe and to respond to serious crime. Our neighbourhood policing activity will continue to be focused on maintaining our core operational duties and delivering our Neighbourhood Policing Strategy.”

E PERSPECTIVE:
ng priorities We began 2021 with a sense of renewed optimism looking forward to the year ahead and the opportunities it may present. We remain very aware of the impact that the current Covid-19 public health emergency is placing on individuals, families and our communities as a whole. With the ever changing situation, we remain resolute in our commitment, effort and energy, continuing to plan and work with community groups and our partners across the public sector, to reduce the impact of Covid-19 on our local communities and to keep you all safe. In Goole, the vast majority of you have been doing what’s right for a long time, following the government guidelines to help reduce the spread of coronavirus and keeping one another safe. We continue to use the 4E’s approach to policing Covid-19; engage, explain, encourage and finally enforce the regulations where applicable. You may have seen on our social media channels and in the local media that in recent weeks we have seen an increase in house
parties and larger gatherings. Where there have been clear breaches of the regulations we have taken proportionate and necessary action, issuing appropriate fines to individuals. As vaccination roll out continues across health care settings across Goole and Pocklington, you will see your local officers in attendance, providing reassurance around key vaccination sites. Regardless of Covid-19, our policing teams remains to protect the most vulnerable, keep people safe and to respond to serious crime. Our neighbourhood policing activity will continue to be focused on maintaining our core operational duties and delivering our Neighbourhood Policing Strategy. The provision of highly visible and locally connected neighbourhood policing teams remain the foundation of our force operating model. I encourage everyone to regularly visit our website where you can instantly find out more about your local Neighbourhood Policing Team, see how you can get involved in shaping our activities, find out more about what the team are doing and see some of our recent appeals for support and examples of our good work.

Howden ice cream pa lockdown takeaway tr Is there anything better than an ice cream on a warm day? Well, as we enter Spring, hopefully we will begin to see many more sunny days and Groovy Moo will have the ice creams waiting for us! Handmade the traditional way in Malton, North Yorkshire, Groovy Moo takes the very best in local produce and combines it with fresh natural ingredients from across the world to create authentic gelato that the whole family can enjoy. The popular spot is best known for its alternative gelato flavours including Cadbury’s Creme Egg, custard cream, Turkish Delight, Terry’s Chocolate Orange and many more. The local business was forced to close its doors when the country went into lockdown, however, the ice-cream parlour has now decided to reopen as a takeaway service to offer customers a treat whilst keeping the business afloat. Ice cream has been the family business for decades. Before Groovy Moo, founder Michelle ran a successful ice cream parlour in Bridlington with her husband Sean. The couple dreamed of creating their own ice cream – something that would really stand out in a sea of similar brands. The first shop in Malton opened its doors in 2015 – and became an instant hit with locals and visitors alike! Word spread fast, and the business grew quickly. A new shop in Howden followed, and local restaurants and attractions across the region began to stock and serve Page 14
Groovy Moo. Our Goole had a chat with Rebecca from the Howden shop to find out more about The Groovy Moo. Rebecca said: “Groovy Moo started in 2015 in Malton. The owner, my auntie Michelle, had always loved ice cream and had always wanted to make it herself. Unfortunately in 2014 she sadly lost her husband to cancer just before the Malton shop opened. Two years from the Malton shop opening, Michelle chose to come back to where she grew up in Howden. “Covid hasn’t really affected us massively other than having to close for a few months. We could have stayed opened for takeaways from the start but didn’t see it fair for customers having to wait outside due to the restrictions in the cold weather. As the weather is now picking up, we decided to open for takeaways. “So far as we have been able to easily and safely operate and we hope to keep serving the wonderful customers of Howden and nearby villages for as long as we can.” To find out more about Groovy Moo or find out when you can get your ice cream fix, please visit www.groovy-moo.co.uk

Property expert David Leake of Housesetc talks to us about the stamp duty holiday which has been extended for a further three months
Stamp duty extension This news applies to anyone with a sale still going through and for anyone looking to come to the market. There are more buyers currently than properties for sale and with this announcement, anyone who was waiting for the official announcement may move their plans forward. So expect an influx of properties to come to the market over the next month. The Chancellor also announced the return of 95% mortgages. This means that buyers will only need a 5% deposit now, depending on their credit ratings etc. This is great news for those looking to take advantage of the
stamp duty holiday, but who didn’t quite have enough for a deposit. I expect that by underwriting these 5% deposits, more people will be able to become homeowners and as such step away from ‘Generation Rent’. Interestingly, the 5% deposit mortgages aren’t just open to first-time buyers. Overall, when it comes to the effects on the property market from today’s budget, the news is positive. In his Budget Speech, the Chancellor said that “several of the country’s largest lenders including Lloyds, NatWest, Santander, Barclays and HSBC will be offering these 95% mortgages from April.”

This month, Jobcentre Goole revisits the Kickstart Scheme which launched back in September 2020, and talks to us about the changes in the scheme and who can now take part in it who couldn’t before
Kickstart Scheme The launch of the Government’s new £2billion Kickstart Scheme was designed to fund the direct creation of additional jobs for young people at risk of long-term unemployment
This is part of the Government’s plan for jobs and aims to create hundreds and thousands of new, fully-funded jobs across England, Scotland and Wales. The first placements are likely to be available from November. As the economy starts to rebuild following the impacts of Covid-19, we know that for many young people a lack of work experience can be a barrier to even getting a foot on the job ladder. That is why steps are being taken to help young people gain experience and secure their place in the world of work. Employers from all industries and across the private, public and voluntary sectors can get involved, and we’re urging them to take advantage of government backing to give their potential a chance. Through the scheme, employers
will be able to access a large pool of young people with lots to offer who are ready for such an opportunity. Organisations of all sizes are encouraged to participate. Prior to February 2021 the scheme wasn’t available to employers with less than 30 placements unless they applied via a gateway or intermediary organisation. This ruling has now changed and any employer can bid directly. Employers will also need to demonstrate that these are additional jobs and that the Kickstart role will provide the experience and support a young person needs to improve their chances of permanent employment. The Kickstart Scheme provides funding to employers to create new six month job placements for young people who are currently on Universal Credit. Funding available for each job will cover the relevant National
Minimum Wage (NMW) rate for 25 hours a week, plus the associated employer National Insurance contributions and employer minimum automatic enrolment contributions. It will also include £1,500 to set up support and training for people on a Kickstart placement, as well as helping pay other set up costs. The Government are actively calling for employers to bid to be involved in the scheme, with the first job placements expected to begin in November. The bid application and information to support employers will be available through GOV.UK - https:// www.gov.uk/government/ collections/kickstart-scheme Young people can find out more about the Kickstart scheme at the jobhelp site - https:// jobhelp.campaign.gov.uk/ kickstart/
