INTRODUCTION The summer holidays have finally arrived and that long-awaited heatwave sent us all into meltdown as we once again struggled to cope with the first bit of decent weather we’ve had this year! If battling through the stifling hot days has taken its toll and you’re worn out with the weather, take a time-out for yourself, pour yourself a long glass of something ice cool, put your feet up and have a relaxing browse through our August issue. This month, the finishing touches are being made to Goole’s latest major investment, a £300,000 refurbishment project at the Tone Zone. East Riding Leisure is working hard on the state-ofthe-art improvements, which will be completed and ready for re-opening on Monday, August 29. Turn to page 22 to read all about it, and make
sure to cut out the voucher on page 21 which will scoop you a free gym session, exercise class and coffee! Taking advantage of our brand new voucher page will also secure you a delicious deal on a steak meal for two with a carafe of wine at the fabulous Peppered Pig Restaurant, East Cowick. If you haven’t had chance to sample the culinary delights on offer there yet, what a perfect way to do so. Make sure you also drop in to Goole’s hidden gem Goole Museum over the summer, where you will be able to walk a fascinating timeline revealing the original ‘triangle’ of streets that built up to form the Goole we know today. Show your support for this ‘superhero’s’ smile A grateful Goole mum is urging all parents to come along to a charity fun day to show support to an organisation that helped her through a worrying pre-natal diagnosis
Laura Rooke and her husband Simon, of Old Goole, were excitedly looking forward to a new year and a new addition to their family as they went for their routine 20-week scan on Christmas Eve, 2013. Laura had so far enjoyed a trouble-free second pregnancy, and the seasonal timing of the scan was the icing on the cake for the excited family. But when the ultrasound picked up a problem, the expectant parents were told that their new bundle of joy would be born with a cleft lip and palate.
cannot suck from a normal teat to feed, and would need a special bottle to help with this.’ The information Laura and Simon found got them through Christmas, and in the new year they met with a clinical nurse specialist who eased their worries about how their child would be once born. Harry was born on April 22, 2014, weighing a very healthy 6lb 11.5oz. He was born with a unilateral cleft lip and palate and had his first operation at just 12 weeks with a second operation at six months.
Shocked and confused after receiving the all clear at a private scan just three weeks earlier, they were left floundering as, due to the Christmas break, there was very little information available.
‘Harry will still require more surgery at around age 10 and regularly attends hospital appointments. This is the first event I’m holding for CLAPA to say thank you for their support which got us through the diagnosis and surgeries.
Once home, Laura immediately began researching the condition online to try and discover just exactly what they, as a family, were facing.
‘Throughout everything, Harry always remains happy and smilies constantly - he makes myself and his dad so extremely proud.’
Laura told Our Goole: ‘The first thing that came up on screen was CLAPA (Cleft Lip and Palate Association), which showed different types of clefts, what surgery would be needed and when to repair them. It also explained how babies born with cleft palates

Improving issues at Eastgate flats
This month Sgt Ryan Reed of Goole Neighbourhood Policing Team highlights the work officers are undertaking to improve a number of issues affecting Goole’s Eastgate flats
‘We’re not just looking at crime...but exploring ‘why’ these issues are occurring’
6
Issue 007 - August 2016
E PERSPECTIVE: Goole’s much maligned Eastgate flats complex has long provided an economic housing solution for many residents of the town. The large, high-rise housing scheme houses around 120 flats and Goole’s Policing team has recently launched a major collaborative initiative alongside several partner agencies to improve ongoing problems there that are affecting, not only the residents of Eastgate, but also Goole’s wider community as a whole. The main aim of the scheme is to clear up a number of social, drug related and crime issues and there are also high hopes of a re-launched Residents’ Association to provide a much-needed voice for occupants. Sgt Ryan Reed told Our Goole: ‘The Eastgate flats complex experiences a number of social issues, such as drug-related activity, antisocial behaviour and other related crime. ‘The Goole Neighbourhood Policing Team has launched a collaborative project which will be looking at improving circumstances for the majority of residents within the complex. ‘Heading up the project is PCSO Michelle Thorley, working alongside partners such as the East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s Housing department, the ERYC Anti-social Behaviour team and substance support workers. ‘As a base line the local policing team has already visited the majority of residents to discuss what issues are important to them, and how we can work together to tackle some of the common themes. As a direct result of this interaction there is definite support to re-energise the Residents’ Association to give a collective voice. ‘The intention of the project is to then look at how problems can be resolved in a more holistic fashion. Not just looking at crime, but also looking at environment and contributing factors towards antisocial behaviour, exploring ‘why’ the majority of issues are occurring and making a collective action plan to tackle them with other supporting agencies. This could incorporate many positive aspects, from assistance with employment to support around everyday skills to promote health.’
Crimes in your area • Access was gained into an insecure property via a rear door and various items were stolen including a tv, laptop and handbag. • Tools were stolen from an insecure vehicle parked on a driveway. • A secure moped was stolen in Goole. • Entry was gained into a property in Goole, two sets of car keys were taken which resulted in the theft of an Audi and a Peugeot. The cars were later found abandoned. • Damage was caused to a UPVC rear and front door but no entry was gained. • The front side plastic indicator light covers were stolen from a VW Golf parked on a driveway. • Entry was gained into a property in Goole and various items including an iPad were stolen. • Entry was gained into a secure property under renovation and a mixer was stolen. • A hedge strimmer was stolen from a secure garden shed. • Two cars in one street in Goole had windows smashed but no entry was gained inside. • CASE UPDATE - Three cases of criminal damage to motor vehicles which occurred in May 2010 were recently detected when a suspect in an unrelated offence supplied a DNA sample. This was checked against the database and matches were found, resulting in compensation as a community resolution paid to each victim.

More than a century before anyone had heard of Mary Berry, this small part of Yorkshire had its very own version of the popular food writer and TV presenter
Long-forgotten recipes go on display Mary Eleanor Blakey, who died more than 70 years ago, has recently had her meticulous notes and recipes published by local historian David Lewis. Her story is now the subject of an exhibition at Goole Museum, which runs until the end of the month and features Mary’s recipes, kitchen tips and fascinating life story. It was while sorting through piles of donated books in a charity shop back in 2012 that David came across a dog-eared green notebook. Inside was page after page of Edwardian copperplate writing detailing recipes and kitchen tips from more than 100 years ago. Were it not for David’s curiosity and instinct for historical items, her long-forgotten notebook would have been consigned to the bin and lost forever. David told Our Goole: “Finding out about Mary has been such an interesting and satisfying journey. 10
“Through genealogical records I was able to find out that she was born near Ripon and subsequently moved to Howden and Hemingbrough. Articles in local papers gave me vital information on her marriage and her work during the First World War in Cumbria. “Best of all, it allowed me to meet her great niece, who lives in Hemingbrough and has traced the family tree back to the 1700s.” Four years of research later and ‘Durability, Efficiency, Economy’ Mary’s phrase describing a well-run kitchen - was published in April, featuring kitchen advice, alongside her life story, as well as local recipes such as Moggy, Potato Cheesecake and Stir Up Rhubarb Pudd. David added: “I think the book is incredibly worthwhile for several reasons – firstly, it shows how to make the most from very little, and also demonstrates how harsh kitchen conditions were back then.
It also shows what a determined and forward-thinking young lady she was, trying to pass on her knowledge at the age of just 27.” The display at Goole Museum tells the story of David’s discovery and reveals more about Mary Blakey. Free copies of some of her recipes are available and the 112-page full colour book can be purchased for £5. There will be a ‘Meet the Author’ event on August 13, for details call Goole Museum on (01405) 768963.

IS YOUR LITTLE ONE OUR SEPTEMBER COVER STAR?
littlestcoampretitiosn
The lovely weather has been enough to put a smile on all of our faces, but once we received this latest selection of shots from Our Goole’s Little Stars competition, we were beaming brighter than the sun! This beautiful group of bouncing babies and lovable tots all took a break from their fun in the sun to visit the studio and have their snaps taken, each vying for the coveted title of ‘Our Goole’s Little Star 2016’ and to have their winning picture featured as the cover shot for the September issue. Earlier this year Our Goole, in partnership with photographer Colin Wallwork of Photography@ Wallworks, launched Goole’s first ever ‘Little Stars’ competition, with all entry fees being entirely donated to Martin’s House Hospice, a charity that provides family-led care for children with life-limiting conditions.
Here are the smiling entrants from those sunny sittings, along with a voting form enabling you to help decide Our Goole’s very first ‘Little Star’! There is one voting slip in each copy of Our Goole’s August issue, distributed to each and every home in Goole and surrounding areas. Once you have used your own slip and voted for your ‘winner’, encourage family, friends and neighbours to use their vote. The top five entries with the most votes by the closing date will go through to the final, where a panel of independent judges will select the winner and the runner-up. The winner will receive a 20” x 16” acrylic panel worth £275, along with £150 cash and their winning picture used as the cover shot for Our Goole’s September issue. The runner up will receive a 16” x 12” art block worth £185, along with £50 cash. Closing date: Tuesday, August 23, 2016

Treasure-hunting chef strikes gold in top role
Searching for Yorkshire’s tastiest food jewels is a real passion for the head chef at the Peppered Pig restaurant, Matthew Brewer, but before he took charge of the Turnbridge restaurant kitchens, he was seeking out treasure troves of a very different kind The 23-year-old’s first foray into cookery was as commis chef and deck hand on a salvage boat, recovering cargo from sunken ships, including the World War II British troopship RMS Laconia. As well as cooking up food for the captain and crew, Matthew also helped haul the hoards from the deep,
including one cache of 50 tonnes of silver coins. “I loved the salvage work, but realised I loved the cooking side more and I guess you could say I was hooked - line and sinker!” says Matthew. Putting his nautical scavenging skills to good use, Matthew sources all the food for the restaurant, including, of course, plenty of fresh fish – and he casts his net far and wide over our little patch of Yorkshire for his tasty hauls.

‘Pig Inn Hotel’
progressing well
“I’m proud to be from Yorkshire,” says the Barnsley born chef, who has also cooked at Cheshire restaurant The Bells of Peover and Cotswolds country house hotel Lower Slaughter Manor. “Every single thing I cook and eat comes from local suppliers and independent businesses.”
Work is coming on a treat at Cowick’s renowned Peppered Pig restaurant as the booming business undergoes a major redevelopment to open up the new boutique ‘Pig Inn Hotel’. Owners Sam and Glen Mitchell dug the first sod on the site of their new six-bedroom hotel at the beginning of June – marking the start of an exciting six-month project and adding a whole new string to the couple’s ‘hospitality’ bow. The Snaith Road development, which will form part of the hugely successful restaurant and deli complex – and Turnbridge Children’s Nursery – will also include an expanded bar area (tripled in size) and a function suite for up to 120 people.
Despite heading up a youthful brigade of three – which includes sous chef Marcus Ashton-Simpson, 24, chef de partie Luke Hoggard, 24 and commis chef Luke Bhogal, 26 – Matthew and his team are aiming high. “We all work really hard and would love to gain the attention of the Michelin Guide,” says Matthew, whose signature dish ‘Pigs in a Field’ showcases that to perfection. The culinary creation incorporates black pudding ‘soil’, ‘ploughed’ apple sauce fields, asparagus ‘trees’ and pea soup ‘hedges’! “It’s not just a meal on a plate, it’s a sensory experience.”
The first stage of work is nearing completion, with a state-of-the-art extension being added to the existing nursery. Plasterers are currently finalising the interior walls and busy landscaping for the all new, age-appropriate sensory gardens. Once complete, the nursery will move into the new extension at the end of August. The next major phase of the development will then get underway to convert the old nursery into a hotel with en-suite bedrooms, a function suite and bar, offering a modern twist on the traditional English inn with a pared down, honest Yorkshire style. 17

Boat hoist revamp brings back memories for Goole joiner ABP and Historic England are currently working together on the second phase of an extensive refurbishment programme that will restore a piece of port and shipping history The 100-year-old boat hoist standing on Goole’s South Dock is a unique part of the area’s industrial heritage and is currently undergoing a programme of refurbishment to guarantee its future. The current restoration has brought back fond memories for former Goole joiner Stuart Gill, who worked on the original ‘phase one’ of the refurbishments in 2006. The 19th-century hoist is such a vulnerable historic gem it was added to the English Heritage ‘Heritage at Risk’ register in 2014 and Associated British Ports are committed to making sure this important part of the region’s past is protected for the future. Restoration works were last undertaken a decade ago and this latest programme of restoration
saw a £135,000 investment by ABP, which was fund matched by Historic England. The entire project is expected to be complete by 2019. ‘Number 5’ was originally one of five hoists operating here and is today the only remaining example of its type in the country. Designed by William Bartholomew, the hoist was built to transfer coal arriving at the port in barges from across Yorkshire on to waiting ships. Until then, the cargo was moved laboriously by hand so Bartholomew’s solution - to create hoists which could lift an entire barge and tip the contents into the ships’ hold - were a revelation. These specially-designed barges became affectionately known as ‘Tom Puddings’. A lifetime career as a skilled joiner saw Mr Gill spend many hours around the dock and boat industry of Goole, working originally as a boat builder for Smiths. Mr Gill’s craftsmanship was called on for many significant projects over the years, including many repair jobs for ABP: working on Goole’s jetty; the ‘Ocean lock’ gates, hand building a piston housing on the dockside and an extensive refurbishment of Goole’s river navigation light structure, which was painstakingly taken apart and rebuilt in situ.
Working on the historic hoist back in 2006, Mr Gill and a team of skilled craftsmen spent three months dismantling the rotten woodwork and toiling in a joiners’ shop - crafting, priming and painting replacement windows and housing, which was then returned to Goole and installed. ‘There is a lot of family history for me surrounding the hoist. All my mother’s brothers worked on it their entire lives, so it was a proud thing to be involved in its restoration. That one structure showcases Yorkshire’s coal mining, canal and maritime heritage all together, which is part of what makes it so fascinating. ‘I’m delighted that this unique survivor continues to be conserved and the ongoing repairs will see it retained for generations to come.’ 25

In this month’s Business Column, Business Support Specialist Heidi Green shares her considerable expertise on ‘networking’ and explains how to get the most out of these all-important events, ensuring ‘time and money well spent’…
Hitting the networking trail Business networking is a fantastic way to help generate leads for your business, though many people find it daunting to start with. It comes more naturally to some people than others, so here are a few hints and tips to ease you in gently (or act as a gentle reminder to those who may have networked for years but have become complacent). 1. Be prepared – organisation is key, you will feel less stressed. Ensure you have lots of business cards, any literature you wish to hand out, banners, a notebook and pen, know where you
are going and the parking arrangements. By having all this in place, you will arrive relaxed with that all-important smile. 2. Plan how you are going to introduce yourself and your business. Remember, people buy from people so don’t go in with the “hard sell. Tell them the benefits they will get from engaging with you. You may only get 30 seconds to make that first impression. 3. Set realistic objectives. If you don’t have goals you cannot tell if you are getting value for your time and money. Realistically, you could meet 3 or 4 new contacts, generate interest in your offer, secure some meetings for a more in depth

Issue 007 - August 2016 discussion. Do not think you can engage with everyone in the room or win thousands of pounds worth of new business straight away. It takes time to build up that all important rapport and for people to begin to know you. 4. Two ears and one mouth, or in other words “listen”! People love to talk about themselves. Ask questions that help you identify if they are a good connection and if you can do business together. 5. Networking does not end at the close of the meeting, it is vital to follow up with those you have spoken to, even if it is just a thank you for your time. Do this promptly whilst your conversation is still fresh in their minds. 6. Be yourself and be open and honest. There is no right and wrong, it is about a rich mix of different people. Try different networking groups and find one that is the right fit for you. There are many groups around so it is important that your investment of time and money is well spent. Business Support York & North Yorkshire is a business support organisation that helps people feel comfortable and improves their networking skills through presentation skills training.

Discover the blacksmiths, shoemakers, carpenters and butchers that built Goole Sitting at the very top of Carlisle Street, above the town library and overlooking the hustle and bustle of Goole’s marketplace, is a hidden gem housing a fascinating and informative record of life throughout the ages in Goole and the surrounding area
Goole Museum is manned by an enthusiastic team of staff and dedicated volunteers, exploring the history of the town and port through permanent displays and an ever changing programme of art, craft and local history that would delight even the most knowledgable of local historians. 30
The main exhibition area features displays on the history of Goole, including the ‘ship wall’, where builder’s models of vessels, which were either built in or sailed from the port are displayed, and many of Reuben Chappell’s ship paintings can be found hanging in the Education Room.
Issue 007 - August 2016
An adjacent gallery showcases a changing programme of exhibitions, some by local artists and others researched and compiled by the museum’s volunteer team. Drop in on this fascinating venue this summer and you will discover the captivating story of ‘The Goole Triangle’, an in-depth exploration of how Goole was built - the original streets forming a triangle of trade and domestic buildings which eventually built up into the town we know and love today. Following two years of extensive, volunteer-led research by George Balcam, Paul Lewis, Christine Collins, Nicole Ridley, Gwen Naylor, John Mitchell and Janet Nicholson, visitors can now learn of the township that grew around Goole docks, became home to the
abundance of workers who poured into the town and the shops, buildings and businesses that followed. Past delights ‘The Captain’s Table’, focusing on the many seafaring officers that sailed in and out, and indeed, resided in the Port of Goole; ‘Barnes Wallis’, an in-depth look at the exceptional and innovative aviator and his unique links to the area; and the saucily named ‘Pants and Underwear’ exhibitions, have all proved hugely popular, bringing visitors to the town from across the country. ‘The Goole Triangle’ runs until October 8. This month property expert David Leake, of Housesetc reports This property expert David Leake on themonth drop-off of enquiries as predicted earlier of in Housesetc the year
offers advice on securing your dream first home
Avoiding the pitfalls of first-time buying Being a first-time buyer can be hard work, stressful and nerve-racking so it is important to put yourself in the best possible position when starting the process. If you want to be ready to compete with other buyers in such a buoyant market, then you need to spend time preparing. It is absolutely essential to speak to an Independent Mortgage Broker to find out exactly what you can afford and which mortgage route is best for you. It’s also helpful to get a mortgage Agreement
In Principle because this shows the estate agent and the vendor that you are serious and ready to go. Before you start the viewings you should ask yourself key questions. What does the property need to provide? Is it a home you will grow into? Is the distance to local schools important and what about transport links to work? If you opt for an older-style home, have you taken into account the cost of any maintenance over

Issue 007 - August 2016 time versus a new build? Or if you are looking to buy a flat, have you considered the additional yearly costs such as ground rent and service charges? Once you have a clear idea of what you want, you’re ready to start the exciting bit and organise viewings. Starting viewings for your first home is exciting, however, it can feel like there is a lot of pressure to secure your dream property. Stay focused but don’t linger around if you find something you love, otherwise someone will snap it up before you! When you are ready to make an offer, show the agent your mortgage agreement in principle. A first-time buyer in a good position can be just as appealing as a cash buyer or investor, providing you can show that you are organised and ready to go. Once your offer has been accepted, don’t slow down. Have a solicitor ready to do the conveyancing and get the transaction moving along quickly. Navigating the property market can be a scary and stressful time for a first-time buyer. But, with the right preparation, you could be unlocking the door to your new home in no time.

Business of the
month
Fast approaching their tenth year together in partnership, and over twenty side-by-side as a team, Danny and Richard at Eliments are renowned for their firstclass customer service and cost-effective home improvement solutions.
With their latest £100,000 showroom upgrade, Eliments are the first North Yorkshire stockist to display the exclusive ‘Ultraframe’ range. Locate caught up with the hard-working duo to find out about the men behind the business:
Danny, when did you found Eliments? “Richard and I have worked together for over 20 years, for many different competitors over that time. Eventually we came to the conclusion that we could provide something a little bit special, so in 2007 we took that final step and founded ‘Eliments’. In those early days it was just the two of us and a van. How things have changed!” Has your business always been based in this area? “When we started we originally focused on York and Selby, but we found we wanted to expand so we branched out to cover a 40 mile radius. That decision was brilliant for our business. Then we found that as customers move house they tend to want us to move with them, which has now taken us into Lincoln, Sheffield, Bradford, Bridlington, Leeds and even down to London.” Tell us about your training and how you worked your way up 36
the career ladder? “I started in the industry as a fabricator, then a supervisor. Promotion to manager, then operations manager followed and now my present role of director. Richard studied for two years at college to be a shop fitter, then worked as an installer for joinery and UPVC specialists. He went on to be a surveyor, progressing to the role of install manager, before making the final leap and he’s now a company director.” Major achievements along the way, milestones etc? “Each year we have invested heavily into our showrooms. We willingly and regularly invest thousands to allow us to proudly showcase all the latest products and ranges, enabling the customer to see state-of-the art products on their doorstep.” How do you find the local area from a business perspective? “Customer satisfaction is paramount and it is a constant battle to keep lead times to a
minimum, whilst efficiently dealing with current customers. Once we know a customer’s requirements we always also offer an alternative option whilst trying to keep it the most cost efficient way possible.” What does the future hold for Eliments? “We have just invested over a £100k into our latest showroom overhaul. We will be the ONLY home improvement company in North Yorkshire to have the complete, new ‘Ultraframe’ products on display in our showroom - we have the ‘Living Roof’, the ‘Real Roof’ and a full ‘Loggia’ orangery/conservatory. It is a major coup and a very prestigious accomplishment.” Lastly, what are the main benefits you find to advertising in our magazines? “We find it very effective advertising in your magazines. We find them a very good return on investment, which is ideal for us.”

Richard and Andy have agreed to join forces with the previous chairman Steve Shorthouse and vice-chairman Craig Whincup to
take the club forward, with the aim of developing the club’s structure to improve its standing in the local and business community, and work on delivering a stable base for the football team. Delighted with the move, Richard told Our Goole: ‘It is fantastic to be back on the board at Goole AFC. We really appreciate your warm welcome and we are very excited about working with Steve and Craig to deliver some exciting long term
goals for the club and the rest of the community. ‘Our initial plans include creating a strategic five-year business plan. This will help us to achieve our long-term goal of developing a self-financed football club, with a winning team, whilst also developing the infrastructure and the facilities at the VPG, which can be used by the entire Goole community and beyond.’
Girl power puts Goole on top Goole’s netball team is taking the regional leagues by storm with a superb succession of wins, highest placings and selections in the run up to its 40th year anniversary next year. Goole Netball Club is one of the town’s major sporting successes, but this year has hit targets far exceeding expectations. Formed in 1977 they has transformed from one team to five senior squads, a strong Junior club and boasts a team of qualified officials and coaches who helped it achieve Gold ERCAS status from the East Riding and a Silver CAPS award from England Netball. Goole is having a champion year with its highest placing in Humberside’s winter top division, and for the first
time has two teams competing in the summer Premier League. Entering the North Yorkshire League for the first time, the team stormed through to win its winter league and top the summer division with an unbeaten run in both divisions. The major achievement was to win a place in the Yorkshire League pay offs against the top teams in the four Yorkshire counties. With only two places up for grabs, the squad’s skill and team spirit got them through to take a golden ticket and a place in the 201617 Yorkshire Regional League.
