Goole’s car boot sale proves huge success! Do you have several items that are just sat being unused that you could sell? Maybe you are after some second-hand bargains? Or just want something to do for a couple of hours on a weekend? Well Goole’s car boot is hugely popular and successful. Not only is it a great place to sell or buy, but the organisers also raise money from the sales for good causes in our community We had a chat with Ross Turner, who along with Cllr Anthony Raspin, runs the event, to find out more about the car boot, how it came about and what the plans are for the future.

“Cllr Anthony Raspin said to me what did I think about holding a car boot sale. I agreed it sounded like a great idea so I raised it at Goole Town Council at one of our meetings and it was unanimously agreed that it

would be good for the local people. We worked out what we were going to do, made sure we had our RAMS etc in place, had a couple of banners made up and set about gauging interest on social media. It’s all on a volunteer basis and is staffed by Anthony, Cllr Kev Bottomley, a local resident Helen Eastwood and me. “We wanted to be able to bring the local people together in our great park to enjoy a wander around on a Sunday morning and maybe pick up a bargain or two. On the first day, Anthony and myself were walking around and a gentleman approached us and

said how great it was to see so many people out enjoying themselves. He was walking around and bumped into an old friend who he had lost touch with and hadn’t seen for 25 years. They went for a brew and now meet up regularly.” How many stalls are there? We cap the amount of stalls at 50 due to congestion. Where is the car boot? West Park, Goole. How do you raise money for good causes? We allocate three free pitches to local charities or kids sports clubs. We charge £10 per pitch which includes a bacon butty from the park’s cafe which

helps them with some extra income. The money which is left is paid back to Goole Town Council and it is used for small projects that pop up every now and then which might not have been budgeted for.

candles and cake stalls etc.

We have had an outside tap fitted at the park which is utilised by dog walkers etc. We donated money to the upcoming Old Goole Gala to help it happen. We bought four more picnic benches for the park and will maintain them as and when they need it.

What are your plans for

What items are sold? All sorts of things from kids toys to wooden carvings,

To keep them going as much as possible, the money that is raised is a bonus. Bringing people from the local community together is what it’s all about.

FROM A POLICE Fraud Awareness This month, the Goole Policing team talks to us about the online ‘Fraud Awareness Group’ launched last month with the aim of stopping the fraudsters in their tracks

“During the Covid-19 pandemic we’ve seen a national increase in the number of fraudulent messages, with criminals taking advantage of people spending more time at home, shopping online and looking for love.”

Page 10

E PERSPECTIVE: s Group launched The Humberside Police - Fraud Awareness Facebook Group will give people the opportunity to share information on fraudulent text messages, telephone calls, emails and rogue traders in an effort to reduce the number of fraud victims in our area. The ‘Week of Action’ took place between Monday 28th June and Friday 2nd July when the group was monitored by specialists from our Economic Crime Team dishing out advice and guidance whilst also sharing their ‘top tips’ on staying safe online and at home. Over the past 12 months £13.7million has been lost by people in our area to fraudsters, with over 7,700 reported cases. During the Covid-19 pandemic we’ve seen a national increase in the number of fraudulent messages, with criminals taking advantage of people spending more time at home, shopping online and looking for love. Fraudsters have also prayed on the increase in anxiety and worry that many people have experienced over the past sixteen months. In the past few weeks alone we’ve seen examples of several unsolicited messages received through mobile phones. One message appeared to be from a bank, warning of a possible fraud; Request for

NEW payee MR A SMITH has been made on your account. If this was not you please visit…the message was followed by a web link that looked as though it was sent from a major high street bank. Another message appeared to be an invitation to book a Covid-19 vaccination; Dear Mr SMITH. You have been invited to book your Covid-19 vaccinations. Please click the link to book your first vaccination, or tell us if you’ve already booked elsewhere… We’ve also seen examples of fraudulent calls. One common call claims that you have been implicated in a crime; This call is in regards to illegal activity with your National Insurance Number. Ignoring this phone call may lead to legal trouble. Detective Sergeant Ben Robinson said: “Without doubt the pandemic has created a perfect storm that has presented criminals with many opportunities to target vulnerable people. We’re not just talking about the elderly or those that aren’t ‘tech savvy’, 18-24 year olds are spending on average well over four hours a day online. This often leaves them distracted and susceptible to fraudulent behaviour as well. We want people to join our group and share details of suspicious or fraudulent messages so that others have the confidence to spot the signs and report things to the relevant agencies.”

HOWDEN GARDE REVAMP WITH

The California Lodge Garden Centre has recently been taken over and has had a re-vamp! The garden centre is now open and is the perfect trip out on a sunny day to get all your essential for your garden or if you fancy a coffee and bite to eat at The Olive Tree coffee shop Our Goole had a chat with owner Cameron Holroyd to find out more about the garden centre and what the plans are for the future. When did you buy the garden centre? We purchased the garden centre business at the start of this year. What made you buy? We bought the business as we could see great potential. It is positioned in a great spot with lots of passing traffic and is ideally placed with good car parking facilities. What challenges have you faced? We have had to replace the roofing, redecorate the coffee shop and restaurant along with

Page 16

new furniture etc. We have also rebranded the business, increased the stock holding tenfold, given it a full spruce-up and general clean of all areas of the business. What can people expect when they visit? New stock lines have been bought in. People can expect to be greeted by pleasant, knowledgeable staff and a garden centre that is easy to walk round and find things that they want. It is well sign posted and well stocked. What is your proudest achievement? Our proudest achievement is getting the business back up and running in a short space of time and recruiting more staff from the local

“We are here for customers to speak to our knowledgeable team regarding anything garden or gift. We believe there is no such thing as a stupid question and will aim to answer any gardening question put our way. “Our proudest moment is the amazing turn

into everything we do but I believe we have many more proud moments to come with all the plans we have going forward. “Our buying team are hard at work as we speak planning for the next spring/summer season price with a large range of garden furniture, BBQs, and all the items the core gardener needs and some amazing gifts. “Christmas is the next thing on the radar here now and we are looking at making it bigger and better than it’s ever been before with a Christmas themed walk-through kingdom starting in the snowy wilderness right through to a traditional Christmas setting.”

East Riding of Yorkshire Council has joined a national campaign that is bringing together people and organisations from across the country to take a stand against anti-social behaviour and maming the communities safer. The council has joined forces with the police and other community partners to run several street surgeries across the East Riding to mark the launch of the UK’s first official ASB Awareness Week. All areas of the East Riding had huge success. In Goole, ASB officers from the council met with the public at Widop Street to give information to anyone interested in becoming an NWG coordinator. Residents in Goole with ASB concerns also informed officers of problems on the day. Kerri Harold, portfolio holder for public health and tackling inequalities at the council, said: “Anti-social behaviour can have a devastating impact on the lives of residents in some communities. That is why our hardworking ASB team at the council are having a strong presence on streets across the East Riding this week to give our residents the opportunity to speak to Page 18

an officer face-to-face about issues they may be aware of. “ASB is always a challenge but by working alongside the police and other community partners, we believe we can make sure the East Riding remains a safe place for our residents to live.” Rebecca Bryant OBE, chief executive of Resolve, said: “We need to change the way we think about ASB. It is not low-level crime. It devastates the lives of victims and communities and can be a precursor to more serious crime. “As the nation begins to recover from the impact of the pandemic and our society and economy celebrates the start of a return to normal life, it is important that the challenge of ASB continues to be given the priority it needs so that people feel safe in their homes and communities. “We are delighted to have East Riding of Yorkshire Council involved in this hugely important and successful campaign. It is vital to develop partnership approaches across communities to deal with the growing challenges around ASB. “Everyone has the right to feel safe in their home and community.”

Property expert David Leake of Housesetc talks to us about how important it is to choose sustainable garden furniture

‘Green’ Garden Furniture Gorgeous garden furniture is on the ‘to-buy’ list of many this summer and by choosing sustainable furniture allows you to purchase the perfect outdoor set guilt-free. So, your furniture needs to be durable, non-toxic and able to withstand both high and low temperatures. Wood is one of the best materials for outdoor furniture. It will suit almost any style of garden and can be used for decking, seats, benches, etc. Selecting hardwood will guarantee durability compared to softwood. It can be left outside in all seasons and comes in a variety of shades. Bamboo or rattan furniture are both ecofriendly and a great choice for outdoor furniture. The downside is they are both

susceptible to mould and rot in damp weather so use sealant before leaving outside. Stainless steel furniture is another option, an extremely strong material which will require very little maintenance. Stainless steel furniture is not only rust and wind-resistant, but also easy to clean and is 100% recyclable. Just like stainless steel, aluminium can be recycled again and again – making it one of the most eco-friendly metals on the planet. One thing to note is that it can become extremely hot in direct sun so perhaps opt for a set with seat cushions! Recycled plastics are the final material worth mentioning. They represent the ultimate low maintenance material as they are durable, water resistant, won’t rot or peel or crack. To clean, simply use soap and water.

This month, Jobcentre Goole talks to our readers about the opportunities in social care and how they might appeal

Could working in care be for you?

Getting started in adult social care Working in adult social care is not just an emotionally rewarding role, it’s one of the most varied too. Working with a range of people with different care needs means every day is different to the next. What’s more, adult social care is one of the few sectors where jobs are increasing, offering significant numbers of longterm career opportunities. You don’t need previous experience or qualifications to get started. If you’re passionate about helping others, you’ve already got the qualities it takes and there’s training for everything else. So, if you are looking for a job to be proud of, now could be the perfect time to start your career in adult social care. The right move for you With thousands of jobs available nationwide, there are lots of great reasons to become Page 30

an adult social care worker right now, including: • the opportunity to make a difference to people’s lives • long-term employment prospects and opportunities • flexible hours to fit around your other commitments • ongoing career progression and training Where could you be working? There are lots of different job roles in social care; it just depends what you’re interested in, who you want to work with and where you want to work. You can work in a variety of settings, including in a residential care home, in someone else’s home or even your own home, supporting people as a Shared Lives carer. Anyone at any stage of life could need care and support while living at home and in their community. This

includes people with learning disabilities, mental health conditions, sensory impairment or physical disabilities and older people. Residential care can often (but not always) involve working with people with health conditions such as dementia and other complex needs that make it difficult for them to live independently in their own home. Looking for a job in social care? Aquarius

Gemini

Issue 064-August 2021

Libra

(20th Jan-18th Feb)

(21st May-20th June)

(23rd Sept-22nd Oct)

You have not connected with your family much this past month. Set aside some time to visit them and check on their health and wellbeing.

A huge, dramatic change is about to happen in your life in the upcoming weeks. You will need to remain calm and not rush into a big decision.

People are more willing to talk about matters they don’t usually. You need some time to yourself to come to terms with issues that are new to you.

Pisces

Cancer

Scorpio

(19th Feb-20th March)

(21st June- 22nd July)

(23rd Oct-21st Nov)

Plans may have changed in the last few months, but you have some exciting events coming up and you will have lots of new, forever memories.

Your friendships are going to begin to change a little. Not to worry, it’s just time to reflect on who the true ones are.

You are smashing work at the moment and the hard work is not going unrecognised! Keep it up and a promotion is on its way.

Aries

Leo

Sagittarius

(21st March-19th April)

(23rd July-22nd Aug)

(22nd Nov-21st Dec)

A blast from the past will begin to keep you awake at night. However, don’t panic, revisiting the past can sometimes give you the closure you need.

Be careful with you spending this month, blowing all your money at the start and having none left for the rest of the month is not wise.

You are nagging a lot at your partner and it will soon get on top of them. Take a step back and work out what is making you angry.

Taurus

Virgo

Capricorn

(20th April-20th May)

(23rd Aug-22nd Sept)

(22nd Dec-19th Jan)

Make note of those who make time for you and stop relying on those who don’t give you a second thought.

You aren’t in the mood for company or to listen to gossip. You have too many important things on your mind to process.

You are doing a great job at focussing on your health and well-being. Keep up the good work and see it pay off.
