INTRODUCTION As the summer month of August rolls in, Our Goole magazine returns to acknowledge and celebrate everything great about our beloved East Yorkshire town.
with the Read School’s 350th anniversary festivities, while we also stopped off at Silhouette Fitness to speak to Sarah Krawciw about her exciting burlesque dance fitness classes.
This month’s cover feature introduces Junction’s all-embracing cinema experience, as the local arts venue continues to offer autismfriendly film screenings for local sufferers of the condition. Where current national initiatives cater more generally for a larger demographic of autism sufferers, Junction is able to accommodate Goole’s cinema-goers with a much more personal experience.
And we open the voting for Our Goole’s Little Star of 2017.
We visited the village of Drax to get involved
As ever, we bring you a dedicated what’s on page featuring all of Goole’s best upcoming events, as well as our usual variety of handy columnists focusing on business and property. Everyone here at Our Goole wishes you a fantastic end to the summer, and we’ll be back in September with a brand new issue.

Film For All: Juncti Cinema Ex
Junction’s autism-friendly cinema screenings are creating a welcoming environment for those with autism to enjoy the biggest summer blockbusters in a safe, accessible atmosphere As you take your place in a comfy seat to watch the latest hit - armed with boxes of overflowing popcorn - Its easy to take trips to the cinema for granted. But for some, a visit to the movies isn’t always so straightforward. 6
For people with autism, the experience of visiting the cinema can be quite difficult. A combination of long queues, crowds and being plunged into darkness, while being subjected to loud noises and special effects, can create something of a sensory overload. This
can result in what should be an enjoyable experience unfortunately becoming stressful and somewhat traumatic. However, Junction in Goole has joined a growing initiative to address these issues - autismfriendly screenings. Junction
Issue 019-August 2017
ion’s All-Embracing xperience has always taken great pride in providing an accessible environment for all members of the Goole community, and these screenings are yet another example of the town’s arts venue going above and beyond to cater for the local public. While disability service Dimensions works with Vue, Odeon and Cineworld to provide its own nationwide, autismfriendly cinema experience at over 250 theatres, Junction is able to benefit from the close relationship it enjoys with its regular attendees to provide an even more accommodating, personal experience. Autism-friendly screenings are achieved through simple alterations such as opening the auditorium 30 minutes before the beginning of the film, to allow audiences to get comfortable and familiarise themselves with the space as well as using low-level lighting, rather than complete darkness, and reduced sound levels with advert-free screenings. Visits to see the auditorium prior to the screening can also be arranged if required. In terms of the wider data that is available for autism-friendly cinema screenings, in 2015, the UK Cinema Association found
that autism-friendly showings averaged just 9 attendees. So, two years on, when you consider that Junction - a much smaller, modest venue - is averaging 48 viewers for each of their autismfriendly showings, this certainly indicates both a growing demand and audience for the service. But above all else, it is testament to the fantastic work that Junction are doing in making a trip to the movies accessible for all - irrespective of individual needs.
Junction is able to benefit from the close relationship it enjoys with its regular attendees to provide an even more accommodating, personal experience So far, we understand that these screenings have been a great success. Speaking to Our
Goole, a recent cinema-goer said: ‘I took my six-year-old son to the autism-friendly showing of Moana and was thoroughly impressed. The staff were extremely kind, helpful and the facilities were excellent.’ Also speaking to OG, Lauren Cowdery, the venue’s marketing officer, said: ‘We take accessibility seriously at Junction and want to make sure all our audiences can have an enjoyable experience whatever their needs. Since starting our autism-friendly screenings in 2011, we’ve seen them become a popular part of our film programme, and we’re delighted to be able to offer the opportunity to enjoy the latest films to people on the spectrum, both in Goole and beyond. With average audiences of around 50 (and growing!), the screenings are going from strength to strength, which is really positive and highlights the requirement for this type of screening in our community.’ Perfect for kids during the school holidays, Junction’s summer schedule of fantastic autism-friendly screenings will begin with Cars 3 on Tuesday August 15th. See their full schedule at: www.junctiongoole. co.uk/whats-on/cinema/ 7

Body Positive Burlesqu We chat to Sarah Krawciw from Silhouette Fitness about her Burlesque Chair Dance classes - offering a fun and inventive way for the women of Goole to keep fit
There’s something out there to cater for everyone’s keep-fit requirements these days, but if meditation or martial arts don’t take your fancy, perhaps something a little more risqué might be your thing. Along with instructor Sarah Krawciw of Silhouette Fitness, Burlesque Chair Dance UK has come to Goole to offer its classes to women in the area. There are certainly various stigmas attached to burlesque, but Sarah was keen to put these misconceptions to rest when speaking to Our Goole. ‘Most people think we shake our tassels and take off our clothing, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. We wear normal fitness clothing, and each
routine is specially choreographed to work specific body areas. The women meet new people, and we become more of a family than a fitness class.’ Sarah continued: ‘Dance fitness helps with coordination, balance, flexibility and posture, and each routine we teach can easily burn up to 500 calories.’ We think these classes are a fantastic addition to the local community, and in Sarah’s own words, ‘there is nothing more rewarding than seeing women look and feel fabulous!’ If you’d like to give these classes a go, take a look at www. burlesquechairdance.co.uk, or visit Silhouette Fitness on Dunhill Road, where Sarah will be happy to welcome you into their fitness family.

FROM A POLICE
Don’t be a “2 in This month, Sgt David Lonsdale shares some simple security measures that will help to ensure the safety or your home and vehicles
Offenders are always identifying locations and vehicles to commit crimes at a later date
10
Issue 019-August 2017
E PERSPECTIVE:
n 1” victim
The term 2 in 1 burglary is used when there are two offences in one. For example, when vehicle keys have been stolen in order for an offender to take a car/van from outside a property. Offenders often gain access to houses overnight by forcing entry, or by using cat flaps and letterboxes to insert an instrument into the property, to then unhook keys from nearby hangers. Here are some simple security measures that can be taken: • Keep all keys safe and out of sight. Never hang them near doors where they could be removed through either a letterbox or an open window. • Never leave house or car keys in an obvious place, like a handbag or a key bowl. • Always keep your vehicle locked and secured. If your car doesn’t have an alarm/immobiliser, consider having one installed. • Also consider additional security for your vehicle, such as a steering wheel lock. Steering wheel locks and gear level locks are often all that is required to deter a thief. • Never leave any property in your car or van when it is unattended. It takes criminals seconds to smash a window and grab any valuables. • There is also a growing trend for work vans to be targeted, so try to keep valuable tools in your home, whenever you’re away from your vehicle for any period of time. Offenders are always identifying locations and vehicles to commit crimes at a later date. This could be someone looking around an area during the day, or even pretending to be a door to door salesperson. And if you’re selling your car or van via a newspaper or website, you’ll usually have callers coming to view the vehicle in question. If you receive a visit from a suspicious cold caller, give Humberside Police a call on the 101 non-emergency line to report your concerns.
Crimes in your area: • The window of a property was damaged as a result of a stone being thrown at it. • Entry was gained into a secure property and jewellery was stolen. • Entry was gained into a rear garden, and a locked bicycle was stolen. • Stones have been thrown at the window of a property causing the window to smash. • A barbecue and gas canister were stolen from a rear garden in the Hook area. • Entry was gained into a property in Goole and jewellery and various items was stolen. • Entry was gained into an unsecure transit van and a wallet was taken. • A child’s scooter was stolen from outside a shop.

The Read School Celebrates 350 The Read School’s 350th anniversary festivities continued with their annual Commemoration Day Last month, the Read School’s celebratory 350 exhibition was opened, displaying memorabilia and artifacts from the school archives.
Mr Barry Dodd CBE, the Lord Lieutenant of North Yorkshire. He presented prizes to the pupils and made a short address to those gathered.
The celebrations continued on Saturday July 1st with the school’s annual Commemoration Day. The guest preacher for the morning service was the Right Reverend Dr John Thomson, Bishop of Selby, who delivered an excellent sermon to the pupils, staff and guests. The church service was followed by the official opening of the 350 Commemorative Peace Garden, which has been designed and built by Mr Colin Patrick, the school’s specialist tutor.
Headmaster Dr John Sweetman said: ‘The whole day has been a marvellous success from beginning to end, and we have been honoured to have the Lord Lieutenant and the Bishop join us for this special occasion. We are also very grateful to the various benefactors who have enabled us to carry out certain upgrades and repairs as part of our celebrations. What a marvellous legacy Charles Reade has left us with at this wonderful school.’

This month, Business Support Specialist Heidi Green shares the crucial information you need when deciding on a location for your business premises
The next step: Finding premises for your business I am often asked about how best to find your own business premises, in order to move your business away from home. It can be a giant leap of faith, so here are several factors you should consider before signing for anything‌ Start by drawing up a spec - clearly setting out what is essential and desirable - and then circulate your conclusions with commercial estate agents in the area. The premises
24
should allow you to operate without excessive costs. Consider the size and layout of the premises - is it big enough for potential growth? Does it have toilet and kitchen facilities? In terms of parking for both staff and customers, are there restrictions in place that could make this difficult? Think about health and safety and fire regulations, along with service and utility charges, for example gas, electric, water and disposal of waste. On the topic of insurance: who is liable for the building and its contents? Also remember, business rates are based on the property itself, and not the turnover or profits of your business.
Issue 019-August 2017 When deciding on a location, you should also consider the level of passing trade and the number of competitors in the area. Is planning permission in place for your particular type of business? Always check to ensure you are allowed to use the premises for the purpose(s) you have in mind. In relation to the actual lease, it is important to establish the following elements: • How long is the lease? • Is there a break clause? • When are rent reviews held? • Can you sublet? • Can you reassign the lease to a third party? It is highly recommended that you involve a professional surveyor as they can assess the condition of the premises. When you are ready to make an offer, or agree to the terms of a lease, engage an experienced solicitor to assist with this and complete the legal work. With all that said, good luck in finding your new business premises!

Legal focus: Potential problems to look for when viewing a property Buying a house is a big decision, and there’s plenty to consider before putting in a firm offer. This goes beyond the aesthetics of a property, so you should pay close attention to certain aspects that will give you an idea of what issues may be hiding. Pay attention to a property’s roof tiles and guttering. If there are visible signs of damage, this could potentially be costly to rectify and can cause harmful damp within the property. If the property has wooden window or door frames, look for signs of rot, such as distinct smells and signs of mould, as these are usually the main indicators of damp. It is worth running taps and flushing toilets to check the water flow, as poor pressure can be another issue. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, such as how old things are, like the boiler and heating system, for example. Try to visit the property at different times of the day - particularly evenings and weekends - when neighbours are more likely to be at home. This will give you a feel for the local area. Finally, be sure to check what the property’s parking arrangements are. If you are looking to buy or sell a house and would like further advice, call Heptonstalls on 0800 9178267, or visit www.heptonstalls.co.uk 25

Top classmate recognition for outstanding Goole student
A Goole College student is celebrated by his peers after excelling on a further skills course Goldcrest House, a specialist service designed to meet the needs of adults on the autistic spectrum, recently saw one of its users recognised by peers as ‘classmate of the year’, during an end of year vote at Goole College. Having completed an entry level Skills for Further Learning and Employment course, Peter Holt - a Goldcrest House user - was acknowledged by fellow students for the positive, warm attitude he displayed towards learning and his classmates. Delighted to see his hard work recognised, Peter said, ‘I’m very happy to receive this recognition. I saw college as a chance to further my qualifications, develop my skills, and make new friends. I’ve achieved so much of 26
what I set out to do’. Danielle Ripley - Goldcrest House’s coordinator for training, quality assurance, service user reviews and clinical wellbeing - was similarly proud of Peter’s fantastic achievements throughout the course, ‘Our long-term care plans are ultimately about enablement. Peter wished to go to college to further his maths and English skills, as well as make new friends. So we were keen to support his decision, and make it happen. He has flourished during his time at Goole College, and this award is well deserved.’ Everyone at Our Goole would like to congratulate Peter on a fine achievement, and thank Goldcrest House for the amazing work they do in our community.

Securing a job within the NHS may seem quite competitive, but there are a number of routes you can take in order to find your dream job within the country’s largest employer
Starting your career in the NHS Could a career in the NHS be the next step for you? Don’t think of them as an employer catering strictly to medical professionals as the NHS offers many different opportunities…
The NHS is the largest employer in the UK, and many people who step into the organisation already have a firm idea of what they want to do. However, did you know that there are over 350 career paths available? These range from nonclinical roles - such as those associated with the hospitality industry, clerical work and estates maintenance - to the more specialised roles of nurses, doctors, therapists and scientists. Each hospital trust/board is autonomous, and responsible for recruiting its own staff. Volunteering is highly recommended as it can aid in gaining new skills and experience within the NHS. It will help you to understand how the many different job roles dovetail together to ensure the efficient running of such a hugely important national institution. Of course, as well as the personal satisfaction of a career in the NHS, there are excellent employee benefits, too. Here are just a few:
28
• 27 days leave per year - rising to 33 after 10 years • Occupational health and counselling available Training and progression offers the opportunity to progress through pay bands. The NHS prides itself on its progression practices, and its current programme, entitled Talent for Care, has three central themes: Get In, Get On, Go Further. These demonstrate how it is possible for an individual to enter the NHS in a completely non-medical capacity, (e.g. healthcare assistant or porter) and continue to progress via an established training programme to achieve the necessary qualifications. This will then help you undertake a more senior medical role. In addition, there are annual personal development reviews to support individual career aspirations. So, how do you get a job in the NHS? Apply for live NHS vacancies using the web link listed below: www.jobs.nhs.uk
• 37.5 hour working week, plus extras for out of hours/overtime
Successful candidates will be invited to one-to-one interviews. DBS checks and an understanding of NHS values both feature as part of the recruitment process for applicants.
• The salary and pension are still among the best in the public/medical sectors
Apprenticeship programmes are widely available across the NHS across a variety of roles.

This month property expert David Leake, of Housesetc reports Property expert David Leake of Housesetc on the drop-off of enquiries as predicted earlier inconsiders the year
the potential effects that an impending Brexit could have on the UK property market
Will Brexit affect the property market? As we begin the enormous task of negotiating our exit from the EU, the effects on our country’s property market are far from conclusive. One year on from the referendum, it could be said that the effects on the general economy have been more gradual rather than explosive. Though at this stage, it would take a brave economist to make a long-term prediction for the property market.
‘Losing momentum?’ A report by Nationwide suggested that the housing market is ‘losing momentum’, as it was revealed that UK house prices fell for the third consecutive month in May. Given Nationwide’s data, it is possible that the referendum result has resulted in a lack of buyer/

Issue 019-August 2017 seller confidence. However, Rightmove insists the property market has in fact recovered from the shock of the referendum result. Its latest house price index reveals that, compared to June 2016, there were 4.6% more sales agreed last month, and 7.6% more properties joining the market. The conclusion is that prices are at a virtual standstill across the UK. And although prices are rising by 2.8% annually, many buyers are finding that they cannot afford to make big offers. Interest rates With regards to house price predictions, it might be wise to reserve judgement until Brexit negotiations are at a more advanced stage. In the meantime, the housing shortage means demand remains high, and so house prices will most likely continue to grow, but perhaps at a slower rate. For a house price crash to occur, there would have to be a hike in interest rates, and that doesn’t appear to be on the horizon - the Bank of England is likely to be reluctant to implement an increase due to the triggering of Article 50.

Snowflake in summertime Ian Smith - Goole’s very own funny man takes up a month-long residency at the world-famous Edinburgh Fringe festival for his new stand-up show, Snowflake After the continued success of his sidesplitting web series focusing on the quirkier side of our town which featured in the July issue of Our Goole. Our local funny man Ian Smith is heading to Edinburgh Fringe, the world’s largest arts festival, to perform his brand-new stand-up show, Snowflake, at the Underbelly from August 2nd to the 27th (not the 16th). Though having previously appeared on BBC 2, 3 and Channel 5, it’s fair to say that Smith’s bread and butter is still very much his hilarious, live stand-up performances - with the comedian’s previous shows receiving various national award nominations.

Kent’s Brands Hatch racing circuit has always proved difficult for Goole racer Charlie Atkins, but after strong results in the last two rounds, his confidence has certainly increased. There were two free practice sessions on the Friday, and in FP1, Atkins finished fifth quickest. Then, in the afternoon session, he reduced his lap time by more than three tenths of a second, but unfortunately slipped to sixth overall. Qualifying The qualifying session on the Saturday took place early in the morning. There had been heavy rain overnight, and although the sun was shining, the track was 38
still quite damp. The riders went out on wet tyres at the beginning of the thirty-minute session. Atkins struggled initially to set a good time, but with ten minutes remaining, the track had dried sufficiently for a switch to slick tyres. Atkins then went on to set his best qualifying time on this track with a 1:41.649 - securing a fifth-placed start in race one. As race one approached in the afternoon, the circuit was covered with dark clouds, and rain began to fall heavily. After a delay, the race had to be postponed, meaning both races would have to take place on the Sunday. Race 1 The first race was the fourteen lap feature event, and

GOOLE RACER LIGHTS UP BRANDS HATCH RACING CIRCUIT In the sixth round of the HEL Performance Motostar British Championship, local motor racer Charlie Atkins earns glittering podium finish Atkins made a good start by maintaining fifth by the end of the first lap. He then endured a sustained period of pressure from Cameron Horsman, as the more experienced FAB-Racing rider looked for a way past Wilson Racing’s Atkins. Despite the pressure, Atkins maintained control to cross the line in fifth position. Race 2 The second race was shorter at ten laps, and once again, Atkins got away well and sat comfortably in fourth during the early stages. As the race passed the halfway point, Atkins moved into third position where he stayed until the end of the race, meaning a clearly
delighted Atkins had secured his first podium of the current season. 27 points from this weekend of racing in Kent leaves him just four points short of fifth place in the championship. Charlie Atkins said, ‘I’m really chuffed! This track has always been difficult for me, and it’s still not my favourite, but to get a podium is great. It also meant that in Wilson Racing had two podium finishes in race two. Congratulations to my team-mate Max Cook, who managed two race victories.
