West Park nominated for UK’s best park The people of Goole have been urged to place their vote for West Park in this year’s ‘UK’s Best Park Award’, organised by Fields in Trust The popular park is widely recognised as one of Goole’s most eye-catching locations, following the continuous hard work of volunteers and the local community. Given the park’s popularity in the area, it is has been nominated for the award and now finds

Page 6

itself in the running to be named the UK’s park of the year. The scheme, which is set up by Fields in Trust, celebrates green spaces in the UK and highlights their importance to local communities. This year, there are 364 parks which can be voted for, including this one, which was nominated by Chair of Friends of West Park group, Georgina Jane Petty.

Speaking to Georgina, she told us: “I was motivated to nominate the park as I have worked with West Park for five years now, and it has always surprised me the amount of people around Goole or just outside of Goole who don’t know what is has to offer. “West Park is a great focal point for the town, and provides a perfect community gathering space. I have seen people say I don’t know where West Park is or what is on offer there, so it seemed a perfect opportunity to let locals know what is going on and try to get as many people to come visit the park. I have always thought we should not take it for granted.” Regardless of whether the park wins or not, Georgina says it is still a fantastic way to inform

the community that Goole is home to a fantastic green space, open for everyone. “To me, whether we win or not, it is a great way to make people more aware of the lovely park that we have right on our doorsteps. In 1926, Goole had its centenary and the park was decorated to reflect that. In 2014 Friends of West Park was formed to promote the space and encourage wider use of the facilities.” “The park really is quite unique, it has its own café and the Green Team have come in and helped us set things up so it’s a perfect space which is open to all the community. People come along and they are surprised, which is a great compliment.” Voting closes on Monday 19th August, and you can place your vote by visiting www.fieldsintrust. org/best-park.

Little Stars

Entry date extended! Our Goole’s Little Stars competition is back for the fourth year running, giving you the opportunity to let your little star shine bright once again. We have extended our entry deadline, ensuring more of Goole’s cutest little ones can be part of our competition! We have put the entry date back a month to accommodate additional bookings, so all entrants in our Little Stars Competition will appear in the September edition, along with the voting form. The winners will then be announced in the October edition. You can enter your little ones into the competition and your whole entry fee of £4.95 will be donated to a local charity. The competition is open to children from Goole and areas within a 15-mile radius, up to and including children of six years of age. As we explained in our previous editions, all you have to do to enter is book a slot at Clan Shots Photography and take your little one to their studio on Pasture Road, Goole for their photograph to be taken. We will then publish one photograph from the shoot in our September edition, with a voting form attached. This will allow you to cast your vote, and decide who you believe should win our Little Stars 2019! The winner will receive a 24x16in high-quality box canvas from Clan Shots Photography, with the runner-up also rewarded with a 16x12in box Page 8

canvas. Third place will pick up a £40 gift voucher from Clan Shots Photography studio - £20 courtesy of Our Goole and £20 courtesy of Clan Shots. FROM A POLICE Operation Yellowfin This month, Sgt David Lonsdale introduces readers to a brand-new scheme being rolled out in the area, following its success in Hull

“We want everyone who gives information about the theft of motorcycles and stolen bikes, or who reports crimes/anti-social behaviour involving any sort of motorbike to quote ‘Yellowfin’ to our call takers and officers”

Page 10

Issue 043-August 2019

Please mention Our Goole when calling advertisers

E PERSPECTIVE: Operation Yellowfin has been set up to tackle motorbike crime and ASB, and is being rolled out across the East Riding due to its effective work in Hull. Op Yellowfin is a positive action campaign which brings together our partners, supporting organisations and the public so we can collect and share information quickly to catch and deter those individuals involved in motorbike crime. We want everyone who gives information about the theft of motorcycles and stolen bikes, or who reports crimes/anti-social behaviour involving any sort of motorbike (including mopeds and scooters) to quote ‘Yellowfin’ to our call takers and officers. That way we are able to link all motorbike-related crime with the valuable information and intelligence needed to deal with it effectively. If this instruction is followed by people contacting us concerning motorbike theft, you are targeting the right area of the police force, and are saving time for both yourselves and us. Our officers will also support and offer advice to victims of motorcycle crimes and ASB who can be left distressed, out-of-pocket, inconvenienced, and without a means of transport.

You can use our 101 service to give any information to us, or if you want to remain anonymous you can call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. They are a totally independent charity who are not interested in your name or details, just what you know. Here are a few simple tips on how to keep your bike more secure: • Always lock your bike with its fork and ignition locks. • Invest in a secondary quality disc and chain lock. • Secure your bike to a rail, anchor point or anything solid. • Where there are no anchor points lock bikes together with your friend’s. • Fit a quality approved alarm and tracking system. • Invest in an insurance-approved ID and marking system (e.g. micro dot, DNA marking, acid etching…) • Park and lock your bike in well-lit busy locations. Try not to leave it in a remote area, especially overnight. • Cover your bike. It can hide its value and as well as protect it from the weather.

WEST PARK HOSTS SUCCESSFUL CAR BOOT SALE Goole’s West Park has played host to a car boot sale for the very first time this summer The car boot has gone down a treat as the people of Goole flocked in to West Park to pick up some bargains. The next event is scheduled to take place on the 11th August. With the gates opening at 8am, Mayor Josie Head was present at the event to cut the ribbon, officially unveiling the car boot to the people of Goole. We spoke to event organiser Anthony Raspin who told us more about the exciting new plans. “We think it is a great occasion, we are going to try and keep it good fun and bring the community together; it is certainly for everyone so kids are more than welcome to come down and have a look! “As far as we are aware, the same times will apply for our upcoming events. Traders should arrive between 7am – 7.45am to pitch up.

“The gates will open from 8am for the public to come in and have a look round, to see what is on offer. There are plenty of stalls, with the event closing around 11.30am, so it gives the public a good three hours to have a look round. “Of course there is the café open as usual. It worked tirelessly at our first event, which we are extremely appreciative of. Traders pay a small £10 stall charge, which also ensures they are provided with a snack on the day. “We hope to see you all there soon!”

Goole paramedics host successful fundraising day A group of three paramedics working for the ambulance station in Goole have raised an outstanding £1,200 for three chosen charities The three paramedics, Angie, Angie and Liz all worked together to host a fundraising day at the Junction in Goole, raising money in a number of different ways. The event took place on Thursday 6th June, where there was a bake sale, a star baker competition, a tombola and a raffle draw.

diagnosed with cancer, the group were keen to raise money for three separate charities tackling these issues. The group were proud to reach £1,200, with all funds being donated to Stand Up To Cancer, Rethink Mental Health and The Ambulance Staff Charity (Tasc).

Following the news that their colleague’s son had committed suicide, and another had been

have to deal with, and as a close-knit group it sent ripples through our station. “Firstly one of our paramedics was diagnosed with cancer. After tests, she luckily found out it was be treatable but the road ahead would be long - it obviously came with life-changing consequences. It is a journey that she is still on but she is fighting with grace and dignity. After sessions of radiotherapy, several operations and now chemotherapy she is showing cancer not to take on a paramedic, as we are a stubborn group. “If that was not enough we then received the news no one wants to hear, another colleague’s son had unfortunately taken his own life. This was a young man that many of us had known since he was a toddler and seen him grow into a man and father.”

the news, we felt pretty useless and we were desperate to help out friends and colleagues in some way. “So this was the reason we got together and decided to do a fundraiser to help raise money for three charities, and try and give back to help fight cancer and mental health.” With an impressive £1,200 raised, the paramedics would like to thank everyone that took part and donated, and are appreciative of the help of all the locals that came down to the fundraising day. From everyone at Our Goole magazine, we would like to congratulate the group on their charitable work, and their continuous tireless efforts around the clock!

After hearing the news, Angie and her team were keen to give something back to try and raise money for three of their chosen charities. Given the group’s caring nature as paramedics, Angie claimed they felt ‘pretty useless’, so were keen to help raise funds through their fundraising day. “We are a group of people that are used to helping people and trying to help them change their lives for the better. This month, Business Support Specialist Heidi Green talks us through the best ways to overcome adversity in your business

Overcoming adversity In business we often have to face and overcome problem. After all, you cannot be successful if you give up at the first hurdle. People will test your patience, and at times, your emotions will try to get the better of you. Take a step back before you do anything. A great example of this is emailing. Never send one in anger, so go away and do something different, come back and read it aloud. Do you still want to send it? When you do decide to take action do it! Fulfil any commitments you make and keep your promises. To colleagues and clients you

are only as good as your word and you are resilient because you know you can depend on yourself. Welcome feedback from people, listen to what is being said, and if it is valid, take action. No one likes criticism but handle it in a constructive manner to help you develop better skills, do not take it personally. For further help and advice on business growth and funding opportunities, contact Heidi Green, Senior Business Advisor for Selby District Council via email at hgreen@ selby.gov.uk or telephone 01757 292332.

Property expert David Leake of Housesetc introduces us to some new proposed changes within the industry

Plans to abolish leasehold for most new homes All new-build houses will be sold as freehold in order to tackle the continuation of unfair leasehold practices and prevent future homeowners from being trapped in exploitive arrangements. The proposed changes: • Ground rents on new leases to be reduced to £0. • All new houses to be sold on freehold basis unless there are exceptional circumstances. • Immediate action to ban Help to Buy being used to support the purchase of leasehold houses.

re

• If buyers are incorrectly sold a leasehold home, consumers will be able to get their freehold outright at no extra cost. The first debate on leasehold abuses was held in 1884 with hundreds of examples. A recent report found that: • 94% of leaseholders regret their purchase. • 93% would not buy another leasehold. • 62% feel as though they were missold. The scale of the problems faced by leaseholders to onerous contract conditions demands wholesale change.

Setting up a business The following are some basic things to consider when setting up your own business. For further information please visit Gov.uk - www.gov.uk/ browse/business/settingup

You share responsibility for your business’s debts. You also have accounting responsibilities. Find out more about being in a partnership and how to register here: www.gov.uk/set-up-businesspartnership

Register your business Most businesses register as a sole trader, limited company or partnership.

Rules for your type of business You may have other responsibilities depending on what your business does.

Sole traders It’s simpler to set up as a sole trader, but you’re personally responsible for your business’s debts. You also have some accounting responsibilities www.gov.uk/set-up-sole-trader Limited companies If you form a limited company, its finances are separate from your personal finances, but there are more reporting and management responsibilities - www.gov.uk/running-alimited-company Partnerships A partnership is the simplest way for two or more people to run a business together. Page 32

Check if you need: • Licences or permits, for example to play music, sell food or to trade in the street • Insurance There are also rules you must follow if you: • Sell goods online • Buy goods from abroad or sell goods abroad • Store or use personal information Where you work Check what your responsibilities are if you:

GOOLE TOWN AFC HOPING TO LAUNCH BRAND-NEW GIRLS’ TEAM Goole Town AFC are on the lookout for the next generation of young females who wish to get involved in the game

After receiving a large ‘grow the game’ grant, the club are now encouraging more young girls in primary years 3,4,5 and 6 to come down to the Victoria Pleasure Ground for training sessions. The club holds the sessions every Saturday morning from 10-11am, and aim to be both engaging and fun for those in attendance. The ‘grow the game’ scheme, which is funded by The Football Association and delivered by the Football Foundation, will enable Goole AFC to create four new girls’ teams providing a significant boost to female participatory opportunities in the town.

Our Goole spoke to the club’s Vice Chairman Jack Ewing, who told us more on the plans. “I have been working with the Goole Schools Sport Coordinator to establish the plans, and decided to train the girls from year 3,4,5 and 6 at the primary schools. We started in June and have a regular number of about six or seven that come down. “We train on a Saturday morning between 10 and 11 with a coach at the Victoria Pleasure Ground. It is a great opportunity for young girls to get involved. It is definitely something we are keen to continue with and grow.”
