INTRODUCTION Hello again and a (literally) warm welcome to the August issue!
At the time of writing, this wall-to-wall sunshine we’re having is showing no signs of letting up and we can only hope that it lasts the whole summer. Thankfully, it will be somewhat cooler come October, which is when local teacher and keen amateur runner Matthew Clarke takes on his first ever marathon in memory of his grandparents and in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. We’re rooting for you, Mat! Read all about his challenge on page 6. Elsewhere in this month’s issue, you have a
very difficult decision to make in deciding the winner of this year’s Little Stars competition. Every one of our mini entrants is adorable, so we really don’t envy you in this particular dilemma! As always, there is plenty going on in and around the Goole and Howden areas – for a taste of what’s happening, head to page 36. We hope you’re enjoying getting out and about and making the most of the summer holidays, whether you’re staying local or heading off to more exotic climes. Have a great month, and we’ll see you in September!

akes on first marathon mory of grandparents For keen runner Matthew Clarke, taking on his first marathon later this year holds a special place in his heart He will run the Yorkshire Marathon on 14 October in memory of his grandparents, Harold and Betty Pullan, both of whom were lifelong Goole residents who lost their lives to cancer. Matthew, 31, who currently lives in Brough and grew up in Gilberdyke, will be running the 26mile course to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support. He told us: “It’s been 20 years since my Grandma lost her fight with cancer, followed by my grandad seven years later. As a family we have never forgotten the support Macmillan gave all of us. “When the first Macmillan nurse came to see my Grandma, her words were ‘I’ve not come here because you’re dying from cancer Betty; I’m here to help you live with cancer’. Their approach was so positive. Matthew told us that the nurses went above and beyond the call of duty to make things as comfortable as possible for his grandparents and for the family as a whole. He says that their care was simply amazing – from straightforward things such as making a cup of tea through to offering advice and guidance. No question was too silly, no request too big. “They became part of the family,” he added. “They
were literally a breath of fresh air – always positive, always there regardless of the need no matter how big or small. “I just want to try and give a little back.” An active member of Goole Viking Striders, Matthew is a keen runner, but with this being his first marathon, he has been busy pounding the pavements in order to build up his stamina. He is a regular ‘park runner’ at West Park on a Saturday morning, and has completed in half marathons and 10ks around the region. “Ironically, I was never a ‘sporty’ person growing up and running was the last thing I wanted to do,” Matthew said. “But a few years ago I was inspired after seeing my sister complete her first half marathon. I set a challenge to do it myself, and running has been my passion ever since.” To sponsor Matthew in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support, visit www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/matthew-clarke46 Matthew told us: “I know there are many wonderful charities out there and we all have some that are very close to our hearts. However, if there is any donation you can make, however small, I will be beyond appreciative and grateful.” Wishing you the very best of luck Matthew, from all of us at Our Goole!

FROM A POLICE
Happy retireme
This month Sgt Lonsdale wishes a well-known local figure a happy and fulfilling retirement
“I would urge parents to talk to their children and make sure they know where they are. They learn from you and I would encourage dialogue with them.
Page 10
Issue 031-August 2018
E PERSPECTIVE:
ent, PC Benson! Well it’s finally happened! PC 26 Graham Benson has left the building. He officially retired from the police service in June, after serving 40 years as a constable.
Moving forward, I want to know what impacts you in Goole and while I cannot promise you the earth, I will do whatever I can to make sure we help you feel safe and reassured.
Graham joined the police service in 1978 after transferring as a Special Constable from West Yorkshire Police.
One particular problem at the moment is youths congregating in large groups and being anti-social. Put yourselves in the shoes of a passer-by or victim. How would you feel if you were being sworn at by youths hiding behind hooded tops? It’s simply bullying and antisocial, if not criminal.
Many locals know Graham and shouts of ‘PC Benson’ are often heard as he walks through Goole on his days off. I’m sure that will continue long into his retirement. In the meantime I am sure he will be kept busy following the arrival of his new grandson. So, congratulations Benny. It has been a privilege to serve with you and I wish you and your family all the best for the future. As a result of Graham’s retirement, PC Stuart Wilson will now take over the area previously covered by Graham. PC Wilson has worked most of his service in Hull and will be a real asset to the team and the community. PCSO Michelle Cooper will also be joining the team to cover Goole South Ward.
Most of the children I deal with are decent kids with supportive parents. However, when in large groups their mentality often changes, peer pressure sets in and trouble can often ensue. I would urge parents to talk to their children and make sure they know where they are. They learn from you and I would encourage dialogue with them. MARATHON RUNNER TAKES ON NEXT FUNDRAISING CHALLENGE Just a few short months ago she took on the challenge of a lifetime by completing the London Marathon in aid of her workplace, Retreat, in York Now Breighton resident Amanda MidgleyBliss is organising a barn dance to raise money for the cancer ward at Scunthorpe General Hospital, after her mum was recently diagnosed with the illness.
something back by raising as much as I can so that the staff can continue providing the excellent care they deliver 24 hours, 7 days a week.
Amanda is putting a call out to local businesses for raffle prize donations.
With that in mind, Amanda, together with her husband and three daughters, is organising a barn dance on Saturday 29 September at Wressle Village Hall, starting at 7pm. Adult tickets are £10 and children £5, which includes food – guests bring their own choice of drink.
Amanda told us: “The hospital is doing such an amazing job with Mum, their attention to her care has been brilliant. If there has been anything that she has needed to know they have facilitated it and during consultations for treatments they taken their time and made sure we know exactly what’s going on. “It is such a good hospital which isn’t given the recognition it deserves. I just want to give

This month, Business Support Specialist Heidi Green reminds us that being polite costs nothing
Good manners matter! In business, manners can make or break you. People buy from people who they know, like and trust, so don’t ruin your chances of building that strong relationship by letting manners slip.
Shake hands, smile, give your name clearly and start building rapport. You don’t have to get straight down to business, small talk can lead to a more relaxed meeting.
It may sound obvious, but be on time for meetings and try to give people an indication of how long the meeting will last. If you have arranged another meeting make sure you have left sufficient time if things over-run a little.
Always follow up. If you have been networking, send a quick note. It takes seconds and can make you more memorable than others in the room. If you have promised to send something or act on something, do it.
Dress appropriately for the job you do, always be clean, professional and comfortable.
Be the introducer. Not everyone will know each other so if possible ensure you make those connections. Looking after your interests, looking after you
Not sure if you’ve been a victim of Medical Negligence?

Issue 031-August 2018 Don’t interrupt, even if you suddenly remember something of great interest or importance. Always put your phone away - turn it off and don’t keep checking it. Say please and thank you and treat everyone with respect and in the way you would like to be treated. If something goes wrong, a sincere ‘sorry’ with a simple explanation can make all the difference. Having good business etiquette shows professionalism and can really differentiate you in a business situation. For further help and advice on business growth and funding opportunities, contact Heidi Green, Senior Business Advisor for Selby District Council via email at hgreen@selby.gov.uk or telephone 01757 292332.
CASEY WESTON
PERSONAL INJURY SPECIALIST
Making a claim against an uninsured or untraced driver If you are the victim of a road traffic accident and the other driver is either unidentified or uninsured, you may be able to make a compensation claim. An uninsured driver is one who does not have a valid insurance policy. An untraced driver is one who cannot be identified if, for example, they provide false details. If the driver is traced but uninsured you can make a claim against the driver directly, but it is often difficult to enforce a judgement against an individual. If your accident occurred while you were at work, you could make a personal injury claim against your employer if you feel that your employer exposed you to an unnecessary risk of injury. It is important to seek legal advice regarding whether or not this is an option. The final option is to make your personal injury claim against the Motor Insurers’ Bureau (MIB), a fund that all insurance companies contribute towards. The MIB has money available to compensate victims of uninsured or untraced drivers for personal injuries. Whatever option you may consider it is important to seek professional legal advice before you make a decision. If you or someone you know would like to know how to make a personal injury claim, contact Heptonstalls Solicitors on 0800 917 8267 or visit www.heptonstalls.co.uk

Property expert David Leake of Housesetc explains the latest Government efforts to reverse years of falling home ownership
MAKING HOUSING MORE ACCESSIBLE The Government think-tank Onward issued its first report in June, lobbying for a new approach to increasing housing supply, aimed at reversing 15 years of falling homeownership. A 10-point plan offers a new approach by increasing the powers given to councils to buy land to develop new villages and towns. It also recommends building discounted housing which prioritises young people with families in the immediate development vicinity.
Page 26
A further independent review warned that developers are slowing the system down by limiting the number of new-build homes that are released for sale at any one time, a practice which prevents a glut of new-build homes driving down prices in the local market. However the report suggests that by increasing the choice of design, size and tenure of new homes, developers could increase build-out rates without impacting on the local market.

Universal Credit is the new benefits system which replaces six existing means-tested benefits and tax credits. Here, we take a look at how it can help your company.
How Universal Credit can help your business New system increases the financial incentive of work and provides employers with a more flexible workforce. The new set-up means the 16-hour rule no longer applies, so staff can increase their hours and no longer worry about losing their benefits. Universal Credit gives jobseekers the flexibility to consider short term work - as they’ll know their claim stays open and their benefit payment will adjust accordingly. It also gives employers the opportunity to use existing part-time staff for overtime and extra shifts at peak times. The flexibility of Universal Credit means you can give your staff extra shifts and responsibilities. This enables existing employees to increase their skills and progress within your company - encouraging Page 34
retention and a long-term reduction in recruitment costs. The system also offers jobseekers the opportunity to improve digital and budgeting skills, giving employers access to a wider pool of better prepared applicants. Universal Credit helps parents by offering more generous childcare support, helping them to not only move into work but increase their hours and availability. Payments are calculated using the PAYE real-time information you send to HMRC. This is a simpler and more accurate system - which means you will get fewer wage enquiries. If you’re self-employed and in receipt of Universal Credit,
you may be eligible for business mentoring. This is part of the Government’s commitment to small businesses. Initial mentoring can last for up to 12 weeks and includes workshops on topics including financial planning and marketing support, as well as help in creating a business development and growth plan. If the plan is viable, you can receive a further year of support and mentoring. Please note - not every jobseeker will currently be claiming Universal Credit. However, it is the Government’s intention that those remaining on any of the six existing means-tested benefits will be migrated across over the course of the next few years.

Successful Striders battle heat to post strong times The Walkington 10k is one of the staples of the area’s summer running calendar, and as ever, there was a strong Goole presence on 13 July
Three-hundred foot of climb and 26-degree heat did not put 11 Striders off, with Martin Booth the first Strider back, posting a time of 40 minutes and 53 seconds, which was all the more impressive given the heatwave conditions. James Williamson followed just 31 seconds behind, with Mark Johns completing in 43.43. Emma Tune was the first Goole lady back and Paul Brewer managed a personal-best time of 50.57. Those in the field also included Matt Clarke, Neil Stead, Philippa Oldridge, Debbie Andrew, Joanne Mouncey and Sandy Midgley. Just a couple of weeks before Walkington, 10 Striders took on the Humber Bridge Half Page 38
Marathon. Any race which includes a section called Cardiac Hill is clearly not for the fainthearted (pun intended)! However, Martin Booth was the first Goole runner back (90.46), with Steve Tether (93.02) and Patrick Harness (93.04) barely separated. Julie Masterman was the first Goole lady in a terrific time of 94.05 while Mark Johns also ducked under the 100-minute mark by 30 seconds. Also in action were Matt Clarke, Neil Stead, Paul Brewer, Mike Harvey and Alison Hoggarth. The Striders meet every Wednesday evening at Goole Rugby Club/Tennis Centre. All abilities are catered for. Everyone over 16 is welcome.
