Zolsha brings ho awards at the E Curry Awards Last month we reported how Indian restaurant and takeaway Zolsha in Howden was nominated for the Most Wanted Restaurant of the Year for the Yorkshire and Humber region. Well, we are delighted to tell you that Zolsha not only won this category but was also the Most Wanted Restaurant of the Year Overall Winner 2018.
restaurants throughout the country at the biggest and most prolific curry event of the year and Zolsha was delighted to be selected as finalist. Zolsha was thrilled to be selected as winners of the Most Wanted Restaurant of the Year category in Yorkshire and the Humber region. Then, all of the regional winners were put forward to an overall final to find the countries best. Just to be recognised with some of these amazing restaurants was more than Zolsha expected.
That means we have a most wanted restaurant in the whole county in our area!
And to the amazement and pure elation, Zolsha was announced as the overall winner and awarded England’s Most Wanted Restaurant of the Year 2018.
As we told you last month, the eighth English Curry Awards celebrate and acknowledge

It has been a great journey and to win this is a huge honour that we are all so proud of.” Zolsha launched its new menu in November and the trophy is now on show for everyone to see! Ash adds: “We hope that our customers will come and celebrate with us as there will definitely be a party atmosphere in the restaurant, so everyone is welcome.” Huge congratulations to Zolsha, very well deserved! FROM A POLICE Goole has some new recruits!
In November we saw seven new police cadets attend their first meeting at Goole Police Station
“Cadets will also have the opportunity to develop key life skills such as leadership and communication.”
Page 10
Issue 035-December 2018
E PERSPECTIVE: The weekly meetings will allow the cadets to learn a range of topics such as law, problem solving and police powers. Cadets will also have the opportunity to develop key life skills such as leadership and communication. In addition to the weekly lessons, cadets will also be expected to volunteer four hours every month to attend local community events and assist with police training – this could see cadets engaging with members of the public or role playing for police recruits during Stop & Search training. Predominantly, the cadets will be based at Goole, however, they will also have the opportunity to visit other locations. Our police cadets are aged between 15-17 years old and live in the Humberside Policing Area. Humberside Police now has a total of 85 cadets who are based at Hull, Grimsby, Scunthorpe, Bridlington and now Goole. The volunteer police cadet scheme is a youth organisation and is not a recruitment pathway. We will be accepting new cadets who can apply when applications open again in April 2019, so if you are interested please get in touch. Goole Community Advisory Group We need volunteers to join our Community Advisory Group. If you are interested and want to influence policing in your local area, visit Goole Police Station and ask for PC Adderley or PS Ravu to find out more information. Safer Schools Partnership As part of our Safer Schools Partnership our officers have spent over five hours in local schools over the last month. Activities included high-visibility patrol during pick-up/drop-off times and joint investigation of an incident that happened on school premises. Op GOOLEBUSTERS Officers in Goole have conducted two ‘days of action’ to tackle cyclists riding inconsiderately/carelessly on footpaths in Goole. Over the two days, officers stopped over 60 cyclists riding on footpaths, with words of advice given and anti-social behaviour warning letters issued to persistent offenders.

Armistice The First World War was one of the most significant events of the modern era and its consequences, along with WWII, still shape the world we live in today. This year marked 100 years since fighting in the First World War came to an end on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month
We take a look at how Goole remembered and honoured those who sacrificed themselves to secure and protect our freedom. GOOLE’S ANNUAL ARMISTICE SUNDAY MARCH AND SERVICE Crowds visited Goole town centre on Sunday 11th November to pay tribute and watch the fantastic parade as always. The Yorkshire Corps of Drums led the parade and John Hawley conducted the service. Goole’s Community Policing Team were also present to pay their respects and lay a wreath. Keith Sacre, chairman of Goole & Howden Page 18
Royal British Legion, said: “Many thanks to Jon Bradburn, the parade marshall and all branch members who assisted on the day. The people of Goole came together to pay their respects and remember those who gave their all, they did the town proud.” ST MARY’S COMMUNITY CHARITY & OLD GOOLE WORKING MEN’S CLUB On Saturday November 10th, a service was held at the memorial garden of Old Goole Club where children from Marshlands School sang and read poems for the audience. Mandy O’Brien, secretary at Old Goole WMC, says: “After a lot of hard work by people in

Day 2018 the community, it was nice to see the event go smoothly. It was especially great to see the young in our area mixing with the old. We hope the young children will keep the event going in years to come.” YORKSHIRE WATERWAYS MUSEUM The museum held an event on Saturday 10th November with Goole First World War Society and other local history groups with war times displays. Thousands of handmade poppies from the community were on display as well as a live performance from Castaway Musical Theatre Group. Clare Hunt, business development manager, said: “The civic guests thoroughly enjoyed the event, Goole WW1 research group produced some very informative boards, other enthusiasts brought some excellent displays of war time memorabilia and Castaway kept everybody entertained!”
“We would also like to thank the whole community for knitting the thousands of poppies attached to our fence. It’s lovely to be able to celebrate the event as a whole community.” GOOLE PARK RUN
This particular week’s Park Run invited runners to wear their poppy with pride and join the team of volunteers to say ‘thank you’ to all who served, sacrificed and changed our world. Chantelle Smith, event director, said: “The remembrance event went really well with over 160 participants. We had local military members Ben Mancy and Katie Holden handing out poppies on the morning and then taking part in the run along with core team member Robbie Smith in full army kit and boots.” It’s great to see our community paying such great respects to those who made the life we live today possible.

This month, Business Support Specialist Heidi Green tells us about having a plan in place in case something goes wrong
Nevermind the Ps & Qs, what about the Ts & Cs One of the main things you can do to ensure control within your business is to have terms and conditions in place, so why is it so many business owners do not think about this until something bad happens?
To protect you and your business against any legal action you should include:

The benefit to yourself is that it reduces your risk of any disputes which are very time consuming, as you have their agreement in advance. It’s wise to seek professional advice when drafting your terms and conditions. Of course, there is a cost associated with this but it gives you peace of mind when entering into agreements and potentially saves you thousands of pounds should a dispute occur. SARAH MINCHIN
HEAD OF CONVEYANCING
Minimise delays when selling your home The conveyancing process involves a large amount of legal input to transfer the ownership of a property. Checking the legal title documentation, conducting searches to determine whether there are environment or other issues are just some of the steps involved. The responsibility of completing these tasks falls to a qualified conveyancer, however there are steps a homeowner can take to ensure any potential delays are minimised. Be organised and open with information. You will be asked to complete a Property Information Form which asks a range of questions about the property. If any alterations have been made to the property that required either planning permission or consent from a third party, such as an extension, it’s vital that all correspondence and information is presented to your conveyancer. If work has been done and you have no record, or if you are unsure of anything, then you must be open with your conveyancer. Wherever possible you will want to avoid paying for an indemnity insurance policy. Ensure you keep all consents, certificates and guarantees in a safe place. If you would like further advice on the process, contact Heptonstalls Solicitors today on 0800 917 8267 or visit www.heptonstalls.co.uk

Property expert David Leake of Housesetc says that although Help-to-Buy allows first-time buyers to buy a house with less deposit, it may be more expensive in the long run
IS THE HELP-TO-BUY SCHEME WORTH IT? New research reveals that first-time buyers in the UK pay on average 8% more for new homes through the Government’s flagship Help-to-Buy scheme. The scheme is designed to make properties more affordable, enabling people to buy new homes with deposits of just 5%, with the Government providing an equity loan for an additional 20%. The study collected data from almost 70,000 first-time buyers purchasing a new home and found that they paid on average £257,908 for
Page 22
a home compared to £277,968 who bought using Help to Buy. One reason for this could be that new homes already command a 16% premium compared to secondhand properties, reflecting the fact that they are chain free and come with brand new fixtures, fittings and many appliances. When it comes to repaying the equity loan, buyers can only pay off 50% or 100%, with no option for smaller payments. Interest starts at 1.75% after 5 years and increases every year at inflation plus 1%. This has potential to be a nightmare scenario.

Property expert Phil Jones from Link Agency tells us how to prepare for putting in an application to rent
Tips when renting When you see an advertisement for a property and decide that you would like to make an enquiry, make contact with the agent and be polite. Know as much as possible about the property and ask the agent how to apply for a viewing. It surprises many people to learn that this first contact is very important. It gives the agent an impression of you and sets the tone of the relationship going forward. Agents will treat people as they find them in general. Secondly and equally importantly, be honest. This saves time. If you have anything to hide the agent will discover it, you can be certain
of that. County court judgments, individual voluntary arrangements or bankruptcy orders must be disclosed. If you smoke, say so and disclose all would-be occupants including pets. Finally if your application is unsuccessful, don’t be disheartened. Stay in touch with the agent, they may even find you an equally good property very soon afterwards. Remember, there is a strong demand for good quality houses and flats, and not all applications can result in a tenancy being offered.

We carry on with the third instalment of a series of commonly asked questions by employers at Universal Credit events.
Universal Credit: questions and answers part three How do bonuses affect Universal Credit payments? Usually bonuses will be assessed along with salary and depending upon the individual’s circumstances, could reduce their benefit for that period. The claimants will continue on UC automatically for their next payment.
report earnings via PAYE.
What happens if employees say they have received a wrong UC payment? If the correct PAYE information has been sent to HMRC by the employer on or before a person has been paid, employers should tell claimants to contact DWP directly. Guidance is available on the HMRC PAYE in real time (RTI) technical FAQs.
If someone takes multiple jobs, how do the earnings work? The PAYE information from each employer is used to calculate total earnings in each assessment period. This total is used to calculate UC payments.
Do recruitment agencies need to report staff on RTI too? If the agency is the employer, then the agency will need to Page 30
How will employers know who is on benefits? Employers do not need to know who is on benefits, but claimants can tell their employer if they wish. Employers should use exactly the same processes for UC claimants as they do for all their staff.
Employers should not need to verify earnings to DWP if they are reporting earnings using PAYE. What is the current rule on zero hour contracts? UC is designed to be responsive to fluctuations in earnings, as payments are based on income in a specific
monthly assessment period. If the claimant’s earnings drop or they receive no income, then their UC payment will be re-calculated automatically. The flexibility of these types of contracts is attractive to some individuals, but people on UC are not required to accept zero hour contracts which require exclusivity. How does Universal Credit help women returning to work after having a child? UC not only allows people to work any number of hours and still receive benefit; it will also allow people working under 16 hours to claim help with childcare support. Parents can claim back up to 85% of paid out registered childcare costs, up to a monthly limit of £646 for one child, or £1108 for two or more children. AFTER 116 YEARS, RUGBY LEAGUE IS BACK IN GOOLE! Newly formed Rugby League team Goole Vikings welcome any new players who want to get involved
Training every Monday at 8pm at the Victoria Pleasure Grounds, males aged 16 and over are welcome to come, regardless of experience. So if you have always wanted to play rugby, now’s your time to shine! Shaun, who has just been appointed the role of Head Coach, has over 30 years’ experience in the game as both a player and coach and cannot wait to get stuck into his new role. Shaun told Our Goole: “I saw a post on Facebook a month ago about a new Rugby League club forming in Goole, asking if players fancied a run out with a view to getting a team together and my first thoughts were, ‘it’s about time!’ Page 34
“The ambitions of this club are endless. It’s a real working-class community and a proud community at that. I would love for Goole Vikings to establish themselves by playing every week in the Yorkshire league competition, getting people through the gate on a warm Saturday afternoon with a beer in their hands to watch their team put in an entertaining performance.” The club is also looking to possibly launch ladies and junior teams in 2019 if enough support is shown. So why not come down on Monday night to the Victoria Pleasure Grounds, Carter Street, Goole at 8pm for a training session at just £2 per player.
