FROM A POLICE A warm welcome to our new Police Sergeant This month we are saying a huge hello to David Lonsdale, new Police Sergeant of Goole and Pocklington Policing Teams
‘I am passionate about policing and have a real urge to drive down crime rates and tackle the causes of crime and anti-social behaviour’
6
Issue 011 - December 2016
E PERSPECTIVE: ‘I am really pleased to have been selected to manage my team, following the recent move of my predecessor Sergeant Ryan Reed. Ryan will be moving to Bridlington to set up a new early intervention team, aimed at targeting young offenders and lead them away from a life of crime. My name is David Lonsdale and I have been working for Humberside Police for over 13 years. In that time I have undertaken a number of different and challenging roles. Initially, I joined as a response officer before becoming a Neighbourhood Officer and more recently on promotion I worked as Detective Sergeant at Grimsby and Scunthorpe.
CRIMES IN YOUR AREA • A secure bike was stolen. • Entry was gained into a workshop on a farm near Goole and keys taken which resulted in a vehicle being stolen.
Prior to my promotion as a Detective Sergeant I had spent most of my career within the East Riding and especially in Goole and the surrounding villages.
• An unsecured bike was stolen from a rear garden.
I am very familiar with the area and the unique policing challenges that it brings. I am passionate about policing and have a real urge to drive down crime rates and tackle the causes of crime and anti-social behaviour which causes so much stress and anxiety to others. I am keen to hear about the issues facing the town and your expectations of the police and suggestions to improve community relationships.
• A secure vehicle was stolen in Goole.
I am looking forward to bringing my experience and knowledge to the team and with it I will hopefully bring new and innovative ideas and working practices so that we can deliver the service that the community of Goole, Pocklington and the surrounding areas deserve. Over the next few months I will be attending as many community events as possible. I want to meet as many local residents that I can and make sure you get to know my face. I am approachable and always willing to listen. I have already attended a number of meetings and look forward to future meetings as it is an excellent way in which to engage the community. If you wish to talk to me about any issue then please contact me or if you have any suggestions or ideas to improve the service we currently deliver, please contact me at Goole Police Station, Estcourt Street, Goole DN14 5AF.’
• Entry was gained into a secure garage of a property but it would appear that nothing was taken.
• Front and rear number plates were stolen from a parked car in Goole. • A rear door of a property in Goole was damaged in an attempted break in. • Tools were stolen from an unsecured van whilst the van owner kept going in and out of a property that he was working in. • A front door handle of a property in Goole was damaged but no entry was gained. • Two unsecured cycles were stolen from a rear garden in Goole. • Entry was gained into a secure van which was then searched.

Meet the inspirational family with a remarkable story Two parents from Pollington share their story of heartbreak, loss and hope in a bid to raise essential funds for two special charities
Laura Greaves, 30, and her husband Tom, 38, have been through more than most to become parents.
by the love we felt for our two tiny little girls. Initially, Annabel had some hiccups along the way and Emily was doing well but we were told to take each hour as it came.’
On July 7, 2015, Laura was just 27 weeks pregnant with twin girls when it became evident that something wasn’t right.
But on July 15, their smallest baby, Emily Hope, took a turn for the worst. The devastated parents had to make the heartbreaking decision to cease Emily’s treatment.
The decision was made to deliver the babies by emergency c-section that night, a terrifying 13 weeks early.
Tom told Our Goole: ‘We were able to arrange an impromptu christening where Annabel was brought into Emily’s room on a special trolley so that we could be together as a family for the first and last time.’
At 8.31pm, Laura and Tom became proud parents to Annabel Rose who weighed 751g (1lb 5oz). Just a minute later, Annabel was followed by her twin sister Emily Hope, who weighed just 389g (13oz) – less than a tin of baked beans. The girls were born in the Feto-Maternal Unit at the Jessop wing of Sheffield’s Royal Hallamshire Hospital. Laura told Our Goole: ‘We were completely overwhelmed
After the ceremony, Laura and Tom were taken into a private room where they were allowed to hold Emily. Tom said: ‘We told her how loved she is and asked her to watch over Annabel from heaven. Being able to hold her has left Emily imprinted on our hearts forever.’ Continues on page 10 9
Our Goole is brought to you by CreateTVT. Call 01405 819141. After Emily passed away, the incredible team at the hospital made funeral arrangements and the family said goodbye for a final time. Laura and Tom were devastated but the brave parents had no choice but to stay strong – baby Annabel was still fighting for her life. Although her progress was slow, on July 20, Annabel was allowed to come out of her incubator and have her first ever cuddle with her parents. After nine weeks in hospital, Annabel was transferred to a hospital closer to home where Laura and Tom were prepared for her homecoming. On October 5, 2015, after 89 days of being in hospital, she finally came home. Annabel is now 16 months old and weighs 13lb 10oz. Laura told us: ‘Despite her slow weight gain and small size she is doing really well. She’s a happy little girl who loves to be around people and she has a beautiful smile that just melts my heart. ‘We will never forget Emily – it’s been a difficult journey since we lost her but we are determined to celebrate her life and our love for her.’ As the twins were born in Sheffield, Laura and Tom were able to stay on the Neonatal Unit for five weeks
in one of six rooms that are allocated to parents who need them the most. Tom said: ‘We are truly thankful to the hospital for allowing us to use the room. It allowed us to stay close to our girls and to meet families in similar situations. When I went back to work it meant Laura still had people around for support.’ Sheffield Hospitals Charity is building a new parent suite on the Neonatal Unit. Tom and Laura are raising funds to furnish these suites and make them as comfortable as possible for parents. They are also raising money for Bliss, a charity aiming to ensure that every baby born prematurely or sick in the UK has the best chance of survival possible. Laura told us: ‘We can never fully express our gratitude to our Bliss nurse Sandra Brown and the staff at the Neonatal Unit in Sheffield. Their dedication to their work and the love and support they give to babies and their families is amazing. Without them, our journey would have been so much more difficult.’ Donate to Bliss and Sheffield Hospitals Charity in memory of Emily Hope by visiting www.justgiving.com/teams/ EmilyHopemakingadifference

Support and friendship for local families in need Christmas is all about families coming together, and no charity understands the importance of family more than Home-Start Goole & District, so it was only right we put the spotlight on them for this festive edition of Our Goole The scheme recruits and trains volunteers to visit local families with at least one child under eight years of age who need some extra support in times of difficulty. The families they support may feel isolated, lonely or have depression or a disability. The incredible charity has been supporting families in the Goole area for the last 21 years. Last year alone 48 volunteers supported 56 local families with 108 children. Senior Organiser, Angie Bailey, told Our Goole: ‘We are proud to say that 95% of the families we asked told us that they were very satisfied with our support. The charity celebrated three years of Big Lottery funding in May and were delighted to be awarded continuation funding until 2019.’
Home-Start Goole & District was established over two decades ago and has supported a growing number of local families with young children each year since 14
Gill Pirt, the original organiser of the scheme, retired this year, however, she hopes to continue her involvement by joining the Trustees on the Management Committee. The impact Home-Start volunteers can have is huge, with families appreciating the non-judgmental and friendly nature of the service. Volunteers enable families to take control of their own lives once again by listening, encouraging and helping them to build on their existing skills.
Issue 011 - December 2016
One parent said: ‘I was suffering with depression and my volunteer encouraged me to do little things such as go shopping - just a little bit of social interaction with or without the kids. Gradually I was encouraged to do more when I was out like taking the time to get a coffee and eventually making new friends.’
Home-Start holds an International Parents Support Group meeting every Thursday from 9am to 11.30am at The Courtyard, Goole for parents to come along and meet other mums and dads to share ideas, listen to speakers from local agencies and help each other to learn about the different nationalities we have in Goole. Pre-school children are welcome and parents can choose to drop in for twenty minutes or stay for two hours for a cuppa and a chat.
Volunteering for Home-Start also has benefits, as pointed out by someone who completed Home-Start’s Preparation Course following retirement. They said: ‘It would have been easy to become isolated and depressed but volunteering with Home-Start has prevented that.’ Home-Start is also training current volunteers to support parents in preparing their children for starting school following a pilot project funded by the Department of Education. This support will be available to families from January 2017 and the aim is to help parents become actively engaged in their children’s early learning to improve their overall life chances. Angie told Our Goole: ‘I joined Home-Start over 10 years ago, first as a volunteer and then as a member of staff. I feel privileged to be involved in the development of the scheme and look forward to providing support for many more local families in the future. ‘Please get in touch with us on 01405 769966 if you feel you would like support from a volunteer or pop along to the weekly group meeting to find out more about what we can offer.’

Toy Tales coming to Goole Museum for Christmas Goole Museum’s Christmas exhibition, Toy Tales, is a chance to take a trip down memory lane and view toys from the past The festive exhibition will provide museum visitors with a glimpse of vintage toys and will be open until 7 January, 2017.
‘Although we have only been able to show a small fraction of their large collection, our visitors will surely enjoy this trip down toy memory lane.
There are dolls, Dinky toys, train sets and Meccano models, and the highlight of the exhibition is a large, finely detailed doll’s house. There are also things for the little ones to play with and games for the big kids too.
‘Bring the kids along and amaze them with tales of amusing yourself and playing outside without the need for electricity or parental guidance – they may not believe you!’
Snaith Toy Museum has loaned some of its many toys and it is hoped that visitors will enjoy this chance to reflect on their childhood and their own favourite toys.
The exhibition is on display at Goole Museum on Carlisle Street. You can visit for free between 10am and 5pm Tuesday to Friday, between 10am and 7pm on Wednesdays and between 9am and 4pm on Saturdays.
Museum curator Debbie Hardy said: ‘I am delighted to have worked with Richard and Rosemary Morley from Snaith Toy Museum.

GOOLE’S AIRE STREET BAGS NATIONAL AWARD Back in the September edition of Our Goole, we told you that Goole’s Aire Street had been shortlisted for a national award and we’re thrilled to be able to tell you that it won Julie and Howard Duckworth have won Best Rescue of a Heritage Site for the restoration of Aire Street in the Historic England Angel Awards.
Julie told Our Goole: ‘Howard and I were absolutely speechless when we won the award – and anyone who knows Howard will be very surprised to hear that.
The Drake Inn at 58 Aire Street is now a popular real ale bar and home to ten bedrooms. When removing the plaster and false ceiling at the inn, which used to be a Barclays Bank, builders discovered hundreds of rare Minton tiles that were made in 1884. Julie and Howard were offered £70,000 cash for them but they refused - believing the tiles should remain a part of the building so that locals and visitors could enjoy them.
‘We really are absolutely delighted, not just for ourselves but for Goole as a community and as a town. We hope it raises awareness of Goole as a place to visit and also that it restores some pride in the locals - we think the town is just amazing and we want everyone who lives here to agree.’
The restoration took place without any grant funding and banks would not provide the Julie Howard Partnership with loans for the buildings. All of the restored buildings were in a horrendous condition when they were initially bought by Julie and Howard.
Since 2004 Howard and Julie have been transforming the unique historic buildings on Aire Street and the surrounding area. 46-52 Aire Street and Dock View has had an extensive makeover – derelict buildings have become retail units, restaurants and affordable apartments.
Dock View and 46-52 Aire Street had even been used as one of the largest drug factories in East Yorkshire and had gaping holes in the roof - who would’ve thought it would now be home to a highly successful Italian restaurant?
The ceremony was held in London and the hardworking duo were there to accept the award in person.
The grade II* Lowther Hotel was completed in 2010 and features 12 bedrooms, a cocktail bar and a number of function rooms. The transformation allowed one of Goole’s most historic buildings to be brought back to life. 18
Both Julie and Howard have dedicated a lot of time and money to Goole. They are really passionate about what they do and the results show - the award is just further confirmation. Well done to them both.

In this month’s Business Column, Business Support Specialist Heidi Green explains just how important managing your cash flow is if you want to see your business succeed and grow
Cash flow is the lifeblood of your business – it’s all about options Considerable research has shown that poor management and running out of money are among the main causes of business failure. Not having sufficient cash in the business undermines its ability to flourish. As it grows it is likely to need more cash to maintain it. Grow too fast with insufficient cash and it could mean the end of your business. When cash flow is under control you’ll actually spend less time managing business finances. If the business
requires investment, positive cash flow provides more options to fund growth. However, any cash forecasting should be accurate and reliable, as it will become the basis of many of your business decisions. A cash flow forecast will enable you to predict requirements for the future and give you time to react should the business perform worse than expected. Think of a yearly cash flow forecast as twelve monthly bank statements; a record of money-in and money-out each month.

Issue 011 - December 2016 To produce a cash flow forecast think about the seasonality or peaks and troughs in your trading. No business has the same income and costs every month. Think also about the relationship between sales and costs – if you’re a café, what proportion of your costs relate to ingredients? What are your expectations of customer spending and what assumptions underpin such figures? How do you understand the effect of trading changes on future cash needs? Cash flow forecasting will help you identify actions that are necessary. What about customers who delay payments to you, how will that change the future? Businesses that have reliable management information, such as accurate cash flow forecasting, perform and survive better than those that don’t. Finally, don’t ignore what the cash flow forecast tells you – if you’re in doubt, seek advice. At Business Support York & North Yorkshire we have 30 years’ experience of helping businesses control their finances, and run courses on a wide range of business topics. Howden red Meet the charity aiming to rebrand the meaning of OAP and connect older people, encouraging them to do great things in the community Groups of over-65s took to Howden’s Co-op to take part in rock n roll dancing, the Charleston, art and yoga as part of Royal Voluntary Service’s volunteer recruitment campaign.
restrictions of older living. The charity is calling on residents to come forward and nominate themselves to ‘Own Awesome Projects’ and become one of ‘Our Amazing People’ by organising an activity for older people in the community with the help of Royal Voluntary Service.
Led by local instructors Sandra Thompson, Austin Holt and Gary Molloy, the classes were organised to inspire other people to step forward to volunteer and to use their energy, talents and skills to set up local clubs, classes and activities to bring together more older people in the community.
Hull and the East Riding has been chosen as the first area in Britain for the new initiative.
The recruitment drive is part of a new campaign that aims to redefine ‘OAP’ – Old Age Pensioner – by celebrating the possibilities rather than the 26
Research by the charity found there is not only demand for more activities in the area, but also for volunteering opportunities to run them too. Half of residents aged over 65 in Hull and the East Riding say there aren’t enough classes and clubs for older people, while nearly three in five people aged over 50 in Goole say they would be interested in running a group.
Issue 011 - December 2016
defines ‘OAP’ Paul Taylor, Operations Manager for Royal Voluntary Service, told Our Goole: ‘There’s a common misconception that once we get older we have to give up all hope of a fulfilling and stimulating social life, but the majority of older people want just that. ‘OAP’ has become synonymous with ‘old’ and ‘past it’, and this needs to change – we want to show that it can just as easily stand for ‘Our Amazing People’. ‘The local people in Howden have shown their enthusiasm and energy for not only redefining OAP,
but also getting involved to create more opportunities to bring older people together in the area and we look forward to working with them going forward.’ Evidence shows that volunteering is not only great for meeting new people and learning skills, but it also has
a positive impact on people’s personal health and wellbeing. Anyone with a skill or passion for something can volunteer – almost anything goes, from woodwork to Bollywood, and from gardening to a book club. Royal Voluntary Service is here to help people get their club or class up and running by offering support and advice. Issue 011 - December 2016 Your pet might be your best friend but make sure there are no off-putting odours. Try to keep children and pets quiet or out of the house when you have viewings. You should always give your home the once-over and do any little jobs that might be making the place look tired. Think touching up chipped or marked paintwork, washing the floors and cleaning the windows. When it comes to kitchens and bathrooms, put away as many items as possible so your potential buyers see clutter-free surfaces. Clean, scrub and polish until these rooms looks shiny and inviting. Try to de-clutter! Lots of storage space is always popular so do everything you can to maximise what you have. Make sure any cupboards are tidy and organised. Finally, potential buyers tend to feel like they’re intruding so minimise the amount of people in the house when you have viewings. Let them look round at their own pace and give them the option to explore on their own.

GOOLE – A NEW BASE FOR BUSINESS IN THE NORTH? Work on a new and exciting business park in Goole is finally complete thanks to the financial help and expertise of Goole Development Trust
For almost two decades Goole Development Trust (GDT) has been providing finance and support for businesses across all sectors in the local area, lending businesses in need up to £150,000. GDT are incredibly proud of their work with Raj Sodha and Fusion Business Park on Rawcliffe Road. Raj moved from Uganda to the UK in 1972 to escape conflict in his home country – he was just 20-yearsold at the time. After working for British Gas, Raj moved into the world of finance and was employed by Barclays Financial Services. Raj found his feet quickly in finance and is now a successful business advisor spending his days assisting people with growing and developing their business. Wanting to spread his wings even more, Raj invested in Fusion Business Park and turned to GDT to assist with completing the development, which now consists of 10 units in Goole. With the workspace complete, Goole now has a
further 20,000 square feet of space for businesses. The space can host up to 20 people alongside the existing tenants which include Just Car Clinics. Raj told Our Goole: ‘Three of the units have already been let out - two of the tenants are not from the local area and have made Goole their northern base. ‘We have another three active enquiries in the pipeline – I think all of the units will be let by the end of the year.’ Stacey Howard of GDT, who assisted Raj with the finance, told Our Goole: ‘Goole and the surrounding region is very close to our heart. We’ve been based here since 1997 and it’s very encouraging to see the area becoming revitalised.’ The units are situated ideally for the Capitol Park Road project which, upon completion, will help connect the Goole area with the M62. Further opportunities for businesses to operate in the area will be created, particularly with involvement in exporting. If your business requires finance to start up or grow, call GDT on 01405 766076. 31

Goole Paddlers project makes a splash indoors
With the darker nights and colder weather now upon us, East Riding Leisure Goole are offering free indoor kayaking sessions The council is offering free indoor kayaking sessions, aimed at 14-25-year-olds, using British Canoeing’s U Canoe Wired programme at East Riding Leisure Goole, with support from a grant from Sport England. These indoor sessions provide an informal, fun and dry introduction to the sport, using British Canoeing’s latest kayak ergometers (paddling machines) and software. Participants will be able to try a range of interactive games, learn good paddling technique, challenge their friends or simply canoe. The sessions are being run on a drop-in basis on Thursdays, from 5-6.30pm, at East Riding Leisure Goole. There will be sessions in December on the 1st and 8th. Participants do not need to have leisure centre memberships to take part.
Phil Scowcroft, British Canoeing Development Officer for Yorkshire, said: ‘It is great to see so much interest and enthusiasm around canoeing activities in Goole at the moment. ‘Hopefully the U Canoe Wired activities will provide the opportunity for lots of young people to get involved in using the indoor machines in the dry and warm over the winter months and encourage and inspire them to want to get out on the water using their new-found skills when the weather warms up again.’ These sessions are being run as part of the Goole Paddlers project, which has been funded by Sport England. It is being led by the East and North Yorkshire Waterways Partnership in collaboration with the council’s sport, play and arts service, British Canoeing, Yorkshire Waterways Museum, the Canal and River Trust and the Local Growth Partnership.

Business of the
month
Back in 1999, a husband and wife team decided to take the plunge and become business partners. TWS was born – the rest is history
TWS has been providing quality services for 17 years so we thought it was time we caught up with co-founder Tony Grindley to find out just how him and his wife Carol have been so successful Tony, can you tell our readers about the services TWS offers? We’ve been fitting windows, doors and conservatories for over a decade now. We work hard to ensure you are fully satisfied, no matter how large or small the task at hand – from a bespoke orangery to a simple front door, we provide the same quality, attention to detail and efficient service. Not only do we provide fantastic conservatories, windows, doors and roofline products, we make them available at a price to suit all pockets. We have secured a number of competitive finance offers with reputable leading lenders for the benefit of our clients as well as offering fully comprehensive, insurance-backed guarantees. Our range of products and services is a comprehensive one meaning you can get everything under one roof. 36
Why did you and Carol decide to set up TWS? Having spent all our lives in the trade, we thought we could do a much better job for customers and saw an opening for a medium-sized family business with values that offered quality and value without customers needing to pay inflated prices. What makes you different from other businesses that offer similar services? With over a decade of experience we have proven our ability to deliver a quality service time and time again. Recommendations and returning customers account for a large proportion of our business, testimony in itself that we deliver what we promise on time and on budget. What makes you different from other similar businesses? As the only BSI accredited installer
in Leeds and a member of many other quality assurance institutions, the products and services supplied by TWS come with the highest level of recommendation. We’re also a family business with traditional family values. We only employ people that are capable of providing sound advice to customers without any waffle and a hard sell. Many of our team having worked with us for years creating a familiar and friendly environment. What do you think of Goole from a business perspective? We’ve completed many jobs in Goole and we’ve always found the people there to be warm and enjoyable to work with. TWS has grown year on year and continues to do so. This is all thanks to our loyal customer base, including those in Goole.

SPORTSNEWS Show-jumping success for local goole rider Local rider Jenny Blyth and horse Sonic Boom Bounce are delighted to announce they have been sponsored by Indian restaurant Zolsha. After a successful season competing at British Eventing, the pair have moved to British Show Jumping and quickly moved up levels following a great start to their new challenge. Zolsha has played a big part Howden’s local community and is pleased to be able to help local people like Jenny move forward in their sport. Jenny told Our Goole: ‘It is great to be supported by Zolsha to give us the chance to keep competing and entering some big events. It is amazing that local businesses are supporting all sports and I am very grateful to Ash and his team for giving us this opportunity.’
Are you looking for some publicity? Our Goole is all about celebrating our community and the people that make it so great. If you’re succeeding in sport and have news to share we want to hear from you.

Goole RUFC receives continued sponsorship Heptonstalls Solicitors has announced it is to continue its support of Goole RUFC by sponsoring the club once again this season
Heptonstalls Solicitors has announced it is to continue its support of Goole RUFC by sponsoring the club once again this season. The Goole-based solicitors are long-standing supporters of the town’s sporting institutions, including the rugby club. Heptonstalls partner, Shaun Pinchbeck, joined club captain David Walton at the club’s grounds recently to confirm the firm’s sponsorship. Shaun said: ‘Goole RUFC is a big part of the sporting community here in Goole and we at Heptonstalls are very proud to support our local rugby club.
‘The first XV has enjoyed a great start to the season and we hope their impressive form continues in the games ahead.’ David Walton said: ‘Having the support of local businesses is really important to Goole RUFC so we are delighted that Heptonstalls has decided to continue its sponsorship once again this season.’ Goole RUFC’s first XV has opened the 2016/17 campaign strongly so far, sitting third in the Yorkshire Three league table, having won four of their first seven games. 41
