New local radio station launches in Goole
Goole’s brand-new premier internet radio service, Pheonix Community Radio Station, has just launched and is proving hugely popular with listeners. Formed in July 2022 by a band of volunteers, the station is dedicated to lifting community aspirations and providing entertainment. The volunteer presenters bring you shows ranging from classic rock to indie music and dance tunes, and everything else inbetween. There are also interviews, news, and sports shows where we bring community members together to shine a light on their wonderful work. They are based in Carlisle House, Goole, East Yorkshire, but their shows reach across the UK.
Our Goole had a chat with Maureen Brown, Chair Presenter, to find out more about the radio station.
Maureen said: “We launched on 22nd of October with the Lord Mayor of Goole Mr Ross Turner cutting the ribbon outside the radio station at Carlisle House on Carlisle Street in Goole. We also had a stall outside The Junction with Sally Mollan as the main presenter on the stall.
“We have been going for over a month now doubling our volunteer presenters by multiple people every week, so we are now a band of thirteen, and have more people waiting for interviews to come on our Phoenix Community Radio Station to do shows. Two more have also just started in these past few weeks. We are growing fast on the internet plus covering more social media sites too.”
Are you looking for a new radio station to listen to online? Do you want to support a local radio station and listen to some updates that may actually affect you?

FROM A POLICE
Launch of Operation
This month, Goole’s policing team talks to us about how Humberside Police are supporting the national campaign to tackle knife crime – Operation Sceptre
“I want to make it clear to people that there are no questions asked, they can take a knife to any of the mentioned stations and simply go in and deposit it in the knife bin.”
POLICE PERSPECTIVE:
Operation Sceptre
During 14-20 November, there was an opportunity to surrender any knives, bladed weapons and offensive weapons into police stations across the region.
Following legislation, brought in on the 14 July 2021, it is illegal to own certain items including knuckle dusters, zombie knives and throwing stars – even within a private dwelling.
Knife bins have been placed outside of the following stations: Goole, Bridlington, Grimsby, Barton, Pocklington, Clough Road, Osborne Street, Beverley, and Scunthorpe.
Superintendent Lee Edwards is leading the operation and said: “Operation Sceptre is rolled out across the country twice a year with an aim to reduce the number of people carrying weapons, especially young people.
“Knife crime presents very real dangers and puts people at risk of serious harm.
“We will be providing knife bins in a number of police stations across the force, where members of the public can anonymously and safely hand in weapons to remove these from our streets.
“I want to make it clear to people that there are no questions asked, they can take a knife to any of the mentioned stations and simply go in and deposit it in the knife bin. There are no forms to complete, and no one should need to make any record of you being there.
“We just want to get as many unused knives out of circulation so that cannot get into the wrong hands and be used in crime.
“Our officers will be conducting weapon sweeps throughout our Force area, with proactive patrols attending local places of education to speak to young people about the dangers of carrying knives.
“Our message to those who carry a knife – or those who are thinking of carrying a knife –this does not protect you. It makes you more vulnerable and places you in greater danger of serious harm.
“I am also wishing to reassure the public that we do not have an escalating knife problem in our area but it is vital to raise awareness of the dangers of knife crime, one young life saved through this scheme is worth everything.”

Local council launches climate change strategy
The council declared a climate emergency in February 2021 and this strategy has been developed to highlights its commitment to delivering net zero and building climate resilience across the East Riding.
We have sought feedback from our communities, businesses and partners during the development of the strategy and have collated thousands of responses which we have incorporated into the strategy.
The council is committed to achieving net zero through reducing carbon emissions across council operations. Although the council is only directly responsible for a small proportion of carbon emissions in East Riding, we recognise our role to lead and influence behaviours and ambitions on climate change across the county.
The strategy sets out key priorities and opportunities for climate action across the
East Riding, which have been shaped by analysis of local data, expertise from across the authority, feedback from partners and public consultation. The strategy takes an integrated approach to climate change, considering how we become more resilient to the changing climate (climate adaptation) and how we can minimise future warming by reducing our emissions of greenhouse gases (climate mitigation).
The news comes whilst globally world leaders meet to discuss action to tackle climate change at the COP27 climate summit in Egypt. United Nations (UN) climate summits are held every year for governments to agree steps to limit global temperature rises. The Climate Change Strategy has been designed to set the East Riding on a path to net zero by establishing a flexible road map which can be developed over time as new policies and strategies are introduced that impact our climate ambitions.
East Riding of Yorkshire Council has launched its Climate Change Strategy 2022-2030, establishing a strategic vision and setting priorities for rapid decarbonisation and building climate resilience in the region
The Climate Change Strategy proposes climate action to be taken across a series of eight priority areas: transport, energy, waste, environment, buildings, economy net, zero council climate, resilience. It has been developed to cover the period 2022 - 2030 with the aim to kickstart rapid action, to reduce emissions and build resilience. A flexible approach will enable the council and its partners to reassess the position in 2030 to ensure the strategy remains aligned with evolving policy, legislation, and technological changes. A more detailed action plan outlining immediate plans and projects aligned to the strategy will be developed covering the period 2022 - 2025.
Councillor Jonathan Owen, leader of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “We declared a climate emergency in February 2021 and this spurred on the development of the strategy and has placed a focus on sustainability and climate change across the organisation.
“What our research and consultation has shown is that while the challenges are great, opportunities for the council to facilitate change and lead by example are within our grasp and we are determined to do everything we can to tackle the climate emergency.
“COP27 is focusing the mind on the challenges and opportunities climate change presents at a global level, and from a local perspective this strategy highlights our commitment to tackling climate change in the East Riding.
“Engaging with our local residents, businesses and partners has been key to developing the strategy and we are fully committed to working with and supporting everyone across the East Riding on their climate action.”
