Men in Sheds is a community space for men to connect, converse and create. The activities are often like those undertaken in the garden shed. They help reduce loneliness and isolation, but most importantly, they’re fun
Most of these projects in the UK are run by men, and this grassroots model can often bring about stronger feelings of fulfilment and achievement in the men that develop them. This may lead to better sustainability as these projects often don’t start with large cash injections. This isn’t always the case though. Men in Sheds Goole is run by its members. Page 6
Our Goole chatted to Tony Burndred, Chairperson, to find out more: “Whilst I was looking at Men in Sheds on YouTube, I had a moment of insanity and thought this would be good for Goole. Over two years ago in 2017, we managed to open. I must admit I had my eyes on one particular building knowing it would be perfect, with a lot of help from councillors Keith
Moore and Alan Menzie, Jacky Birkett from Humber & Wolds Rural Action and Amanda Scrimgeour from Groundwork plus many donators. “Most of the men that attend are retired. This is because a life after employment can be difficult. Men often feel that they’ve lost their sense of purpose and place in the world. They can miss the routine and camaraderie

E PERSPECTIVE:
iour around Goole We have recently seen an increase in young people hanging around certain areas of Goole, being distributive and causing distress to local residents around the areas.

This can occur at any time of the day and night. This is intimidating to residents that live in the area but the main issue is the safety concern to the young people attending the area. On the back of a multi-agency meeting and site visit, future intervention will include continued visible police presence, ideally double crewed, to consider stop/search, target any possible drugs offences, deal with any ASB issues and consider any safeguarding issues. Officers will engage with the young people, consider signposting to local youth provision and inform parents utilising the ERYC
Beat Manager will liaise with patrol officers for joint targeted patrols to cover all exit points and local councillors are to canvas residents for reassurance. We have had several reports of ASB, substance abuse, and possible cuckooing at a residential block of council flats in Goole among a small group of residents. We have already had a community day event involving a host of partners and community groups. This was the launch of the priority providing high visible presence of agencies including Fire, council, residents group, NHW and many others intending to show residents support and partnership working. Alongside housing officers we have served legal notices and warning letters to problematic residents. We intend to take further enforcement action and will be incorporating the area into our daily patrols.

Christmas Toy Appeal 2019 Our toy appeal is well under way and we’ve already received many gifts kindly donated by individuals and local businesses in our area. If you didn’t already know, we are collecting gifts for disadvantaged children of all ages, as well as gifts for children to give to their parents or carers. The gifts will be distributed via Hull and East Yorkshire Credit Union. Lisa Warrener, director of Our Goole, said: “We are so proud to be in our third year of the toy appeal and it’s thanks to the community who make it all happen.
“We truly believe these gifts will make a huge difference to families who are struggling in our area at this time of year. To see the whole town pulling together to help is wonderful! There is still time to donate, if you’d like to and you can drop the gifts of at one of the drop-off points.” We need all gifts by Friday 13th December so we can wrap and distribute them in time for the big day. Donkey sanct helped woma
If you are stuck for things visit The Wonkey Donke The centre was opened in 2015 with the aim to help, support and rehabilitate donkeys in need. What started off as a small place with a few pet donkeys has grown and grown, with the sanctuary now housing over 30 donkeys, six goats, a rescued horse plus four Dartmoor Hill pony foals. Visitors can walk around and see the donkeys that have been rescued and looked after. Our Goole chatted to Jenny, the founder of The Wonkey Donkey Visitors’ Centre, who set up the sanctuary as the animals helped her recover from an illness as a child. Jenny told us: “I opened the Wonkey Donkey in 2015 following a childhood illness when I was left unable to read or write. I had broken my foot at school, but it has been misdiagnosed as a sprained ligament. As I was made to walk on my broken foot for 10 weeks, my brain shut down because of the pain. We didn’t know this at the time, but this is called Conversion Syndrome - this caused me severe pain and trauma to the body and is extremely rare in children. “The donkeys aided my recovery and this was my way of giving something back in return. In May 2017, my family and I were victims of the Manchester Arena terror attack, with my aunties being seriously injured whilst waiting to pick up myself and my cousin. My aunties are still recovering from their injuries and as a family we have all suffered PTSD. Since the horrific event we are trying to rebuild our family as well as develop the donkey sanctuary.” Page 18

This month, Business Support Specialist Heidi Green tells us her top tips on how to get more business from existing customers
Sell more to those you know It is easier and more affordable to sell to existing customers than go out there and try to find new ways. So, let’s think how we can increase your revenue by selling to them.
Consider newsletters to tell them about new products or special offers you are having.
Firstly, think about what your customers have bought previously and offer them relevant services. Of course sales is about being in the right place, at the right time, at the right price. Think about the offers you could put on when they are already in buying mode and encourage them to spend a little more.
Upselling can be more problematic, you are asking customers to spend more. However, by asking the right questions quite often you can point out the savings that can be made long term by spending a little more.
If you treat existing customers right, they will recommend you to others and often they are less price-sensitive than new customers.
Page 22
No matter if you are an online sales business or a physical shop, by placing related items together you are making it easier for the customer to see what else they may need.
For further advice on the above or business growth and funding opportunities contact Heidi Green, Senior Business Advisor for Selby District Council via email at hgreen@ selby.gov.uk or telephone 01757 292332.

Property expert David Leake of Housesetc explains what “gazundering” means and its potential impact on the selling process
Gazundering Gazundering is a relatively modern practice that refers to the action of a buyer who lowers their offer on a previously agreed sale price prior to the contract being signed. In some cases this isn’t the buyer’s choice, but merely a reaction to a change in the chain, or findings in the survey.
Ensure surveys are completed quickly – lenders often have large backlogs, and this may mean that they need to change the lender they were planning to use. Choose your estate agent carefully – a 5-Star rated, reputable estate agent will do all they can to ensure that the sale goes through.
At a time of low demand or when a sale simply has to complete, for example, a seller may be forced to accept the lower price or risk the collapse of the entire chain.
Prevent delays – hold ups between the solicitors of both parties can give the buyer reasons to change their offer. Ensure that you promptly provide all the information.
Set the exchange date for contracts – quicken the deal to try to overcome any doubt or change of mind by the buyer.
Thankfully gazundering is quite rare, and in most instances buyers do not do it vindictively.

This month, Goole Jobcentre’s manager gives a brief overview of how she sees her staff supporting people in the local community and dispels some myths surrounding Jobcentres.
The Goole Jobcentre has the support you need...
...when you need it Jobcentres across the country have recently been portrayed unfavourably in the press. Here at Goole Jobcentre, we are concerned that this negativity is having an impact on people and people are putting off seeking help when that’s what we’re here for! The feeling is that some customers have delayed contacting the Jobcentre/ making a claim when they could have been offered support earlier. Staff at Goole Jobcentre are committed to supporting you and helping you with any concerns you have surrounding employment and payments you are due to receive. The Jobcentre is Goole has a real community feel and we want Page 30
to urge anyone who needs information or advice regarding claiming benefits to contact us. Work coaches will be the first point of contact for you and will work with you throughout your journey. If you have a health issue, they offer support individually tailored to suit your condition/circumstances. They aim to remove any barriers you may have in moving forward into work, for example with training, getting a CV updated, and specialist support/advice via the Work Coach and/or partner agencies. Staff will also discuss/advise how and where to look for work. We see people coming into the Jobcentre who are in receipt of a wide range of benefits, for example, Income
Support, Employment Support Allowance and Jobseekers Allowance. For a lot of people Universal Credit has replaced these benefits and ultimately there will be supported transition from these benefits for existing customers. Universal Credit is paid monthly but some people still need a little help understanding the new format. New benefit claims are made online but there is also support available for anyone who is unable to use this service. In addition if you need help to pay bills or cover other costs whilst waiting for your first Universal Credit payment, you can apply to get an advance payment. See www.gov.uk for more information and advice on claiming Universal Credit.
