We hope everyone is starting to wind down and enjoying the festivities with colleagues, friends and family. Christmas recycling
The festive season is well under way, but do you know what to do with your Christmas waste?
Here is a guide on what do to: Can I put my Christmas tree in my brown bin? Real Christmas trees without decorations can be placed next to brown bins for collection during January. If unsure of collection days, please check on the council website. If the tree is above 5ft (1.5 metres), you are advised to cut to below this size to enable it to fit into the collection vehicle. Real Christmas trees (without decorations) can also be taken to one of the area’s 10 household waste recycling sites and put in the green waste bin for composting. Can I put wrapping paper in the blue bin? Yes, wrapping paper can be put in the blue bin. Please remove sticky tape, ribbons and bows. Page 6
Can I put Christmas cards in the blue bin? Yes, greetings cards can be put in the blue bin, but please remove any parts that contain plastic, glitter, batteries, electronics or other embellishments before recycling. This is then sent to a recycling plant where all material is separated and sorted into different grades before being sent for recycling. Here are some other Christmas items you can recycle: 1. Unwanted gifts – drop your unwanted gifts off at a charity shop or rewrap them and give them to someone else next year. 2. Having a turkey or a nut roast? Give the foil trays a quick rinse to get any chunks of food off it and it’ll go in your blue bin. 3. Glass bottles - if it’s glass then drop it into a bottle bank.

E PERSPECTIVE: During last month, there was an opportunity to give in any knives, bladed weapons, and offensive weapons to police stations across the region. Following legislation, brought in on the 14 July 2021, it is illegal to own certain items including knuckle dusters, zombie knives and throwing stars – even within a private dwelling. Knife bins will be placed outside of the following stations: Goole, Bridlington, Grimsby, Barton, Pocklington, Clough Road, Osborne Street, Beverley, and Scunthorpe. Superintendent Jenny Bristow is leading this November’s operation and said: “Operation Sceptre is rolled out across the country twice a year with an aim to reduce the number of people carrying weapons, especially young people. “Knife crime presents very real dangers and puts people at risk of serious harm. “I want to make it clear to people that there are no questions asked, they can take a knife, or other weapon, to any of the mentioned stations and simply go in and deposit it in the knife bin. There are no forms to complete, and no one should need to make
any record of you being there. “We just want to get as many unused knives and weapons out of circulation as possible, so that cannot get into the wrong hands and be used in crime. “I am also wishing to reassure the public that we do not have an escalating knife problem in our area, but it is vital to raise awareness of the dangers of knife crime, one young life saved through this scheme is worth everything.” Inspector Tom Stevens, supporting the operation, added: “We will be providing knife bins in a number of police stations across the force, where members of the public can anonymously and safely hand in weapons to remove these from our streets. “Our officers will be conducting weapon sweeps throughout our force area, with proactive patrols attending local places of education to speak to young people about the dangers of carrying knives. “Our message to those who carry a knife – or those who are thinking of carrying a knife – this does not protect you. It makes you more vulnerable and places you in greater danger of serious harm.”

Zolsha Restaurant wins national awards celebrating Indian cuisine
Howden-based Restaurant Zolsha is one of the best in the UK after triumphing in the Editor’s Choice category at the Curry Life Awards 2023
The Curry Life Awards 2023, which took place on 15 October, celebrated the elite in the UK’s multi-billionpound curry industry and featured 44 awards across five categories: Editor’s Choice, Best Restaurant, Best Takeaway, Best Chef and Best Recommended Restaurant. Zolsha Restaurant, run by Azid Ahmed, won the award after being recognised for its outstanding Indian dishes and high service standards. The Page 14
event was held at a ceremony in London’s West End. Speaking after the event, Azid commented: “It’s so exciting to have won this award - the event has been fantastic! It marks a real achievement for us.” Azid started his business in a former pub, transforming the building to create a modern Indian dining establishment. With family support, he came up with a contemporary Indian theme and worked with his chef to create a new menu.
Latest menu creations include a Lucknawi karahi, chicken or lamb with ground spices, peppers, onions and cream, and a smoky, garlic chicken korma. The awards attracted an audience of more than 500, including beer magnate Lord Karan Bilimoria, who founded Cobra Beer and is a current House of Lords member, and representatives from headline sponsor Just Eat. The 14th edition of the Awards, which took place at the London

Marriott, Grosvenor Square, was presented by broadcaster and television presenter Lucrezia Millarini. The event was also an occasion to mark an additional celebration, as 2023 is the 20th anniversary year of Curry Life magazine, the promoter of the Awards. The awards night, supported by Just Eat, also highlighted the curry industry’s tenacity, which has survived despite the pandemic and cost-of-living crisis.
The awards were created by brothers Syed Pasha and Syed Ahmed, who came to the UK from Bangladesh in the 1970s and were surprised by the British appetite for curry. They launched Curry Life magazine 20 years ago, and the debut Awards were held in 2009. The brothers also organise an annual British curry festival promoting Angrezi (English) curry worldwide. Speaking at the Awards, Syed Pasha said: “From our humble beginnings, here we are today,
