INTRODUCTION Hello and a very warm welcome to December’s issue of Our Goole!

local businesses have to offer when looking at your options.

We’ve been super busy this month as the festive season is well and truly under way. Although it is a busy time for all, we think it is also important to find time to reflect and look back at the past year - in the blink of an eye 2017 will be over!

If you have any photos or stories you’d like to share with us, please hop on over to our Facebook page, @ourgoole, and drop us a message! We love to share local news and pictures on there, as well as on our website, www.ourgoole.co.uk.

When out doing your Christmas shopping over the next few weeks, we’d like to encourage everybody to ‘shop local’. As you all know, we firmly believe we have some fantastic businesses in the Goole area, many of which are featured in this magazine, which offer not only great customer service, but value for money. It’s definitely worth exploring what

Our stunning cover photo this month was once again taken by the very talented Anne Howard Webb, taken on Northway in Goole, thank you, Anne! We’d like to take this opportunity to wish all of our readers, advertisers and friends a very merry Christmas and prosperous New Year we’ll see you all in 2018!

This month we focus on Jerry Green Dog Rescue, based in Gilberdyke ‘Every year we get better at what we do, so we’re hoping to have re-homed 200 dogs by the end of this year’ Jerry Green Dog Rescue has been rescuing unwanted and abandoned dogs ever since it was established in 1961. Jerry Green opened a centre in Broughton first and since then another four have been opened, one of those being the Gilberdyke centre which is now manned by passionate staff and dedicated volunteers. In last month’s issue, we featured some cats and kittens that are currently in foster homes with Goole RSPCA and are looking for loving new families. If you’re more of a dog person, then Jerry Green Dog Sanctuary in Gilberdyke could currently be looking after your new best friend! The dogs pictured here are desperate for a new home.

RACHEL ROBINS, FUNDRAISING AND COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER FOR JERRY GREEN, SAID: Jerry Green Dog Rescue is a charity that always puts dog welfare first. The best thing about working here is seeing the look on a new owner’s face when they come through the door on adoption day when the wagging tail of their new family member is waiting to greet them.

“We operate a closed kennel system, meaning we invite potential new owners to come and meet our staff so that we can learn all about you and your circumstances and match you with your perfect dog. We can then bring the dog to you in one of our relaxed ‘meet and match’ rooms to spend some quality time together. “Last year our Gilberdyke centre re-homed an astounding 187 dogs. Every year we get better at what we do so we’re hoping to have re-homed 200 dogs by the end of this year. “We need the support of our community to continue to do this amazing work. Jerry Green Dog Rescue doesn’t receive any lottery or government funding — we rely solely on donations from our supporters alone to keep rescuing these dogs. If you can volunteer for us and help us raise some much-needed funds, please contact me at rachel.robins@jerrygreendogs.org.uk.

Looking for a new best friend? NOAH Noah is one big puppy with a lot of love to give! He loves to explore the world with his nose and is looking for a family to explore with. Noah is still on his learning journey and needs a family who are keen to learn and train with him.

ROLO Rolo is full of character and always looking for the next fun thing to do. He is looking for an active home which has experience owning large guarding breeds to help him progress his basic training. He’s a very friendly boy but a little too boisterous to be re-homed with children.

SIMON Simon is a very sweet friendly boy who is looking for a loving forever family where he won’t be left for long periods on his own. Simon loves nothing more than a cuddle and he could live with another dog and children aged seven and above.

BUZZ Buzz is a cuddly affectionate little dog who just loves to sleep, play, eat and cuddle! Buzz may be small but currently in his foster home he likes to be king of the house, making sure any intruders know he is there! However, when he does meet new people he is very affectionate and caring. He could live with children above eight years of age.

Daphne is a lovely little dog who is looking for a home where she will have long walks then long cuddles on the sofa. Daphne enjoys the company of humans so much that she would be better suited to a home where she won’t be left for long periods of time.

The event was premiered at the Lowther Hotel last month and is the culmination of a Goole Civic Society project funded by East Riding Council’s 2017 Active Creative Grants, in support of Hull’s year as City of Culture.

“We have collected a unique archive of memories and stories spanning Goole’s 190-year history, which we will keep and add to for future generations. We have been inundated with pictures from people’s albums and a film made in 1964 by Goole Junior Chamber of Commerce.”

FROM A POLICE

Going shopping? Going out?

This month, Sgt David Lonsdale offers his advice on keeping your belongings safe during this very busy time of year

“Thieves working in pairs may try to divert your attention in order to steal your handbag or purse/ wallet

10

Issue 023-December 2017

E PERSPECTIVE: As the festive season gets under way, lots of us head out shopping for the day or to social events in the evenings. Humberside Police has issued the following advice to stop opportunist thieves taking your belongings. DON’T LEAVE YOUR HANDBAG UNATTENDED in shopping baskets, trolleys, pushchairs or mobility scooters. In cafes and restaurants, keep bags on your lap, between your feet or place the strap around a chair leg. Don’t hang your bag on the back of your chair where you can’t keep an eye on it. DON’T LEAVE YOUR MOBILE PHONE ON THE TABLE Mobile phones are frequently targeted by thieves and easily swiped when your back is turned, even just for a minute. KEEP HANDBAGS CLOSE TO YOUR BODY and closed at all times. Choose a bag that can be zipped. Your purse and phone should be well hidden and tucked away out of sight and out of easy reach of pickpockets. Be particularly careful on public transport, keep your bag where you can see it. If you carry a rucksack, wear it on your front rather than on your back or over your shoulder. KEEP THE AMOUNT OF VALUABLES INSIDE HANDBAGS TO AN ABSOLUTE MINIMUM and do not carry large amounts of cash. BE MINDFUL OF DISTRACTIONS Thieves working in pairs may try to divert your attention in order to steal your handbag or purse/wallet. Avoid carrying too much around with you, the more bags you’ve got the more vulnerable you are. If you need to take shopping back to your car, put your bags in the boot – don’t leave them where they can be seen. This advice also applies if you are going out on an evening too. Don’t ever leave your handbag/wallet unattended even if you are just nipping to the bar to quickly buy a drink or for a dance as it only takes seconds for your belongings to disappear!

Crimes in your area: • Entry was gained into an

unsecure property in Goole and a laptop and tablets were stolen. • A cycle was stolen from a

rear garden. • A car parked on the

roadside was scratched with a sharp instrument. • A rear window and patio

door were damaged in an attempted break-in, no entry was gained. • A brick was thrown at a rear

window of a property causing it smash. • A brick was thrown at a

windscreen of a car causing it to smash. • A motorbike was stolen

from a secure garage. • Entry was gained into a

house and a purse stolen. • Entry was gained into a

secure garden shed which was searched but it would appear that nothing was taken.

If you’re struggling financially this C Staff at the Hull and East Yorkshire Credit Union in Goole have urged people who are struggling this month to contact them and see if they can help The Credit Union is a not-for-profit organisation with the aim of improving the financial well-being of its member-owners by providing ethical, affordable services. Jo Evans, who works in the Goole office, told us: “We want to help our members to afford their lives, not to make a profit out of them. There are people in our town who are really struggling to make it through the Christmas period financially and we want them to know that we are here to help, not just at Christmas, but any time.” The Credit Union is also helping Our Goole with this year’s Christmas toy appeal and will be distributing gifts collected through the appeal to local families who need a bit of support.

12

Jo said: “The Credit Union is really excited to be involved in the Our Goole Toy Appeal. We often see how the stress of Christmas can take its toll financially and emotionally on families. Being involved will not only give us the opportunity to put a smile on a child’s face, but remind parents that, at some time, we all find ourselves in difficult circumstances through no fault of our own.” If anybody would like to donate to the appeal, you can drop off new, unwrapped gifts at the Credit Union office on Pasture Road on Monday, Tuesday or Friday between 10am and 2pm. For further information on the Credit Union, call 01405 854564 or email info@hullandeycu.co.uk.

The Our Goole

Christmas Toy Appeal 2017 Our toy appeal is well under way and we’ve already collected dozens of gifts that have been kindly donated by members of the public and local businesses. We are collecting gifts for disadvantaged children of all ages, as well as gifts for children to give to their parents or carers, and they will be distributed via the children’s centres, Home Start and Hull and East Yorkshire Credit Union.

Lisa Warrener, director of Our Goole, said: ‘We have been overwhelmed with the amount of gifts the appeal has already received and we’d like to thank everybody who has donated or collected presents. We believe these gifts will make a huge difference to families who are struggling in our area and it is really nice to see the whole town pulling together to help. There’s still time to donate, if you’d like to, and you can drop gifts off at one of the drop-off points below.’ All gifts will be collected and distributed by December 15th. Gifts must be unused and unwrapped. If you’d like your business or place of work to organise a collection or be a drop-off point, let us know by emailing news@ourgoole.co.uk. WEATHER PATTERNS EXHIBITION AT GOOLE MUSEUM A new exhibition of textile artwork has opened at Goole Museum - ‘Extreme Weather Patterns: from calm to storm’ by artist Christine Heath will run until January 27th Christine Heath was born in York and educated at Durham St Hild’s, where she gained her teaching certificate, specialising in art and design. Now retired and focusing on her artistic practice, since 1980 she has been exhibiting her work locally. She has also exhibited internationally as part of a now ceased group called Paper Weight. In 2015 her work was included in a touring exhibition of contemporary textiles inspired by the First World War. The exhibition venues included Pocklington Art Gallery, York Castle Museum and the Royal Armouries in Leeds. With the time to explore new practices, Christine continues to experiment in the fields of printing, paper making, quilting and felting. These additional skills have brought a different dynamic to her work. Her latest collection inspired by extreme weather uses many of these techniques in one piece. Chrstine told us: “We cannot escape the weather

and the reality of global warming with all the challenges that it brings. This series of work was inspired by extreme weather patterns, beginning with the sea and storms through to the effects of drought on the land. The art quilts are a contemporary take on the traditional techniques of quilting, felting, weaving and embroidery, treading a fine line between abstraction and realism.” Debbie Hardy, Goole Museum Curator, said: ‘This work is inspirational; I know our visitors will appreciate it and I hope it will encourage some to free their own artistic talents. The weather is all around us, but sometimes it takes an exhibition like this to see it in all of its beauty and magnificence.” On December 9th, from 12.30pm to 2.30pm, Christine will be holding a workshop at the museum, giving a taster session on textile art and how to make it. The workshop is free but places are limited so booking is required. Please call Goole Museum to book on 01405 768963 or email peter. appleyard@eastriding.gov.uk. 21

This month, Business Support Specialist Heidi Green discusses how success means different things to different people

What does success mean to you? Success means different things to different people. This is why having a vision for your business is crucial - it stops you comparing yourself to someone else. Have your own definition of success and work towards that.

24

Naturally you want a stable and profitable business. You will need to cover the business expenses and ensure you have sufficient capacity for personal expenses, having sufficient money to live a comfortable life, but is that enough? Be realistic in your expectations for financial growth; don’t set yourself up to be disappointed by being overly ambitious. Knowing where you are now and where you want to be helps you to devise the strategy to get there.

Issue 023-December 2017

Do not lose sight of the ethos that underpins your business. Customer service is vital to keep people coming back and ensures your staff understand your expectations. Measures of success can be expanding your services, moving into larger premises or increasing staff. These are great milestones for your business but may initially have a negative impact on the financial situation. So remember, the financial position is not the only marker of success. Work/life balance is important; you need to ensure your business can run without you constantly working long hours. Learn to delegate, a great measure of success is you being able to take holidays without worrying about the business. Celebrate every milestone, reward yourself and your staff and your business will go from strength to strength. Heidi Green, Senior Business Adviser for Selby District Council - hgreen@selby.gov.uk - 01757 292332.

MIKE FISH IS RESIDENTIAL PROPERTY EXPERT AT HEPTONSTALLS

Legal focus: Remortgaging your property Interest rates continue to be low and, for anyone on a variable rate mortgage, there may be the opportunity to switch to a fixed rate and take advantage of the low rates currently being offered. Typically, fixed-rate mortgages last between two to five years and agreeing a low rate could save you a significant amount of money and offer a degree of short-term protection. After the fixed-rate period your lender will usually place you on their standard variable rate (SVR), which can be much higher, so you need to check that the repayments on this rate will be affordable. Your property’s value may have risen since you took out your existing mortgage so you may find you have lower loan-to-value rate and be eligible for much lower rates. It’s a good idea to do your own research on comparison websites but ensure that you use more than one site as their results may differ. It’s advisable to get specialist advice and an independent mortgage adviser will be able to provide in-depth knowledge of the market. Bear in mind mortgage advisers usually charge for their advice. Some may be free to you but they’ll receive commission from the lender. They should tell you upfront how much you will pay for their services. For further information about conveyancing services, call Heptonstalls on 0800 917 8267 or visit www.heptonstalls.co.uk.

Universal Credit is being introduced in stages across the UK. You don’t need to do anything until you hear from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) about moving to Universal Credit, unless you have a change in circumstances

Universal Credit Are you digitally capable? Have you verified your identity?

Universal Credit Full Service is being introduced in stages across the UK by postcode area. Whether you can claim it and the way you manage your claim depends on where you live and your personal circumstances. Universal Credit full service is available to all types of claimants in certain areas of the UK. You are in a full service area if it has an asterisk (*) in the list available on the www.gov.uk website. You will have an online Universal Credit account to manage your claim. You can use your account to report changes, send messages to your work coach and find support. Eventually all Universal Credit claims will be on the full service and you will have a Universal Credit online account. 26

Claiming Universal Credit When you make your claim you’ll be asked for your postcode and then be directed to the right service for you to complete your claim online. You will always have access to a work coach who can help you with things like: • Finding work. • Increasing the hours you work. • Getting better prepared for when you are able to work by learning new work skills or life skills. • Helping you to improve your income, which is central to the Universal Credit service. Reporting changes Use your Universal Credit online account to report changes by answering the questions on the screen. The online service will also explain

how to report changes you cannot report online at the moment. GOV.UK Verify: The new way to prove your identity when using digital government services. Get ahead of the game and make using our services quicker and simpler. Don’t delay, Verify today: Gov. UK/Verify. Universal Credit is a single monthly payment for people in or out of work. It replaces some of the benefits and tax credits that you might be getting now, such as Housing Benefit, Child Tax Credit, Income support, Working Tax Credit, Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance and Income-related Employment and Support Allowance. views of your outside space. If the view outside your window is not ideal, consider hanging simple white, linen curtain panels that obstruct the view but also allow the natural light to come in. PAINT A PICTURE While you certainly want the plumbing and electrics to be in good order, keep in mind that one of the most cost-effective things to do to is to paint and magnolia is the king. STAGED, NOT BARE Furniture that is well-proportioned helps potential buyers make sense of the space, and can be highly effective. Make beds with crisp, white linens that emphasise relaxation. SCENT PACKING Prospective buyers are going to be checking out your bathroom. Make sure that your cloakroom is stocked with a pretty bottle of hand soap and clean, light hand towels. Make sure your home smells clean, invest in some good air freshener and scented candles, but be careful, you want to lightly scent a room not overpower it. SPORTSNEWS

It’s the time of year where we all start looking towards setting ourselves new goals and targets and in many cases, making new year’s resolutions to get fit or lose weight. Instead of going into it half-heartedly, why not make a commitment to yourself to join a new club and get involved with something new?

Motivation Playing with others in a team environment gives us extra incentive: we don’t want to let our team mates down so we make the effort to get to training, and we train harder to increase stamina. We’re keen to improve techniques and make a difference to the team.

Participating in team sport is always a big thing for school-aged children, with many kids participating in several different sports on a regular basis, on top of their school PE lessons. But as we grow up into our teens and beyond, we have a tendency to drift away from team sports, preferring to keep ourselves to ourselves, whether that be at classes or in the gym.

Commitment Having something in the week to look forward to, which is independent of work and family commitments, can be a huge stress reliever and really help your mental wellbeing. Allowing yourself some time to exercise and do your own thing is important.

But now there is a trend for adults to get back into team sports and more and more 30 and 40-somethings in the area, with busy family lives and careers, are joining a sports team for a few hours exercise and socialising a week. Here are four reasons why team sports are great for adults: 34

Assurance It’s a massive confidence boost to see your skills grow and improve as you practice. Social Join a local team and you’ll find yourself playing alongside people from the same area as you who
