Local theatre group pu Local theatre group Cast In Stone is putting on a special Christmas performance of ‘The Snow Queen’ at Howden Shire Hall this December We caught up with Angela Stone who runs the group to find out how rehearsals have been going and what audiences can expect if they come to see the show. How long has the group been performing? I started my independent theatre company back in 2018 with a group of great actors in our first ambitious production of Eve Ensler’s The Vagina Monologues. Our performances were well received and it was clear that audiences enjoyed our work. Later that year, we produced a touching piece called Folk from playwright Tom Wells and in 2019, Tessa Rivers and I took on the very funny two-hander “I Want That Hair” by Jane Thornton. Our plan for 2020 was to create a family production but the Page 6
pandemic put paid to those plans. Four members of this cast were due to perform in Spoken Word’s production of Stepping Out at the end of March 2020 so with lockdown keeping us from sharing all our hard work, we instead filmed some content for social media delivering character pieces. Julie wrote and performed a fantastic homage to Adele with her pithy rewriting of Hello (during lockdown). Our cast is made up of local performers who are invited to take on a role dependent on the piece we select for that year. Many of our actors have cut their teeth in pantomime and I felt it would be wonderful to take these skills of performing to family audiences to produce accessible theatre for all ages. We all agreed that the story of

uts on Christmas show The Snow Queen felt familiar yet not well known. This, with a growing awareness of the climate emergency, highlights a sense of urgency for the Queen whose home in the North Pole is under threat. Ultimately the story is about the strength of friendship, loyalty and courage of our two main characters Gerta and Kai and the help (and hindrances) they encounter on this journey. We are a small group and each of us multitask - devising, script writing, designing posters, applying for funding, costumes, set building and even song writing. What can people expect when they come to watch? You will see seven of us on stage for the piece but we have an amazing group of musicians, stage hands, technical support and front of house staff who work tirelessly behind the scenes to bring the magic! This will be the first time Cast in Stone will perform a piece which has been fully
devised and written from scratch and we are particularly excited to be performing original music composed and arranged by Rick Kay. How have rehearsals been going? How did Covid effect the group? Many of us are juggling other commitments during the rehearsal period but, as director, I’m always blown away by the commitment and talent these guys bring to every rehearsal to ensure that each moment of the performance counts. What are your plans for the future? Audiences are in for a treat this December and we are so pleased to be welcoming Scouts, Brownies and other community and school groups to our performances. We’ll be delighted to be back on stage after such a long time away and we promise a performance to remember!

Wellbeing at Work Award for Goole healthcare assistant A local healthcare assistant has won a Wellbeing at Work Award for supporting her colleagues with their health and wellbeing Elaine Ramsden, advanced healthcare assistant at Goole and District Hospital, not only cares for her patients but her colleagues too. She recently won the regional award for her work to improve the health and wellbeing of her colleagues, supporting them to live healthy lives inside and outside of work. Elaine, who has worked at Goole hospital for 33 years, said: “I volunteer as a health and wellbeing ambassador at the hospital alongside my dayto-day role. I support staff with their mental and physical wellbeing by providing helpful information to them and encouraging healthy behaviours. I signpost staff to helpful services, share healthy recipes and fitness videos, arrange social activities, and I set up a walking group. I also created a wellbeing WhatsApp group so we can all inspire each other. “The last year and a half has been difficult for everyone, including healthcare staff who have been working under increased pressure. I have a passion for caring for others and I think it’s Page 14
important we look after our colleagues too - if we’re healthy we can provide the best possible care to our patients.” Elaine provides the health and wellbeing information in hard copy across the hospital as well as online for staff to access at any time. She gathers feedback from them on what they would find helpful, making sure she is catering to the differing needs of her colleagues. Chief nurse, Ellie Monkhouse, said: “We’re very proud of Elaine’s award win and for the invaluable support she provides to her colleagues at Goole hospital. She is a brilliant example of how caring our staff are and deserves this award and the acknowledgement for her efforts.” Elaine was nominated for the award by matron at Goole hospital, Kerry Owen, and the winners were announced at the Health Care Support Worker Conference by Margaret Kitching MBE, chief nurse for North East and Yorkshire. During a recent shift at work, Elaine was presented with a certificate and a £200 eVoucher courtesy of NHS England and NHS Improvement in recognition of her work.

Goole’s bid for the STEP Fusion Facility Back in October, it was announced that a site in Goole had been shortlisted along with four other locations in the UKAEA’s search for a home for the Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production (STEP) Fusion Energy Prototype facility and associated campus East Riding of Yorkshire Council have led the bid along with partners including, the University of York, local developer Wykeland Group and the four Local Enterprise Partnerships covering the entire Yorkshire region, and are delighted to have reached this stage of the process. A key strength of the Goole bid is its alignment with the energy strategies across the Humber that commit to achieve carbon net zero by 2050. The Energy Estuary is the collective vision for this strategy which currently combines a number of renewable technologies to work towards achieving the carbon net zero target for the Humber. The integration of fusion energy into this renewables mix can elevate the Energy Estuary brand to global significance. This final phase, is a period of further detailed assessment prior to the UKAEA submitting a report recommending their preferred site to the Secretary of State at the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy by next April, with the final decision expected towards the end of 2022. Page 16
If we are successful in our bid, then Goole would be recognised as the UK’s home for the future in fusion technology. The prototype plant and associated research and development facilities would be spread across the site, creating a campus style hub for fusion and supporting technologies – such as robotics, large magnets and power supplies. STEP will drive greater investment and opportunity for the whole region with enhanced opportunities for our future workforce. The town is already set to benefit from fresh investment from both the public and private sector such as the Goole Town Deal, a new business centre (RaisE) and Siemens Mobility to name but a few (further details can be found at investeastriding. co.uk)

Councillor Jonathan Owen, Leader of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “This is brilliant news for Goole and fantastic news for the Yorkshire and the Humber in general. It will create wonderful opportunities for growth across the UK, with jobs at all levels created in the region, and the STEP programme will undoubtedly focus on skills development which is something we always nurture as a council.” Andrew Percy, MP for Goole, added: “Goole is once again demonstrating it can be right at the heart of major national projects and I very much welcome the news that Goole has made the final shortlist. I know a lot of hard work has happened to get to this stage, so I commend the partners involved in the project and look
Issue 068-December 2021
forward to seeing the next phase of plans.” Councillor Jane Evison, Portfolio Holder for Economic Growth and Tourism at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “The promise of thousands of jobs coming to Goole is fantastic news for the town and complements the investment recently announced with the Goole Town Deal. Goole’s central location in Yorkshire makes it the ideal host town for the STEP programme and we look forward to working alongside our partners to help deliver this ambitious project.” For further information, view the FAQs, or to have your say please visit https://www. investeastriding.co.uk/key-sectors/fusionenergy/ or email STEPgoole@eastriding.gov.uk

Property expert David Leake of Housesetc talks to us about making the most of the space you have to work with - the key being the illusion of a large area with clever storage solutions
MAKING THE MOST OF A SMALL KITCHEN SPACE Let as much natural light as possible flood your kitchen – this will create a bright, airy feel. Keep window dressing minimal, choosing light, neutral designs will allow as much daylight in as possible. As important as daylight is, you will also need to consider task lighting. Choose to position lights under cabinets to illuminate countertops and use spotlights rather than low hanging pendants to avoid taking up limited ceiling or visual space. In terms of décor, think carefully about your colour scheme. White reflects light which will enhance the space you do have. Gloss finish cabinets or worktops and stainless-
steel taps, handles, and appliances will reflect light and help create the illusion of space. Whatever the size, a kitchen needs to be functional. Clear kitchen worktops will give you the illusion of more space and provide a practical area for cooking. Streamlining your cabinets, keeping them in one or two neat lines will draw the eye forward and emphasise the length of the room. For raised storage, leave a gap between the cupboards and ceiling to give the illusion of more space. Careful planning is all that’s needed to make your kitchen work for you, whatever the size or shape you have to work with.

This month, Jobcentre Goole talks to us about what support is available for those struggling with the price of energy
Struggling with the rising price of energy? Grants are available through the British Gas Energy Trust Individuals and families can apply for grants to clear domestic gas and electricity debts. Before applying to the Trust you must get money or debt advice first. Find local money and energy advice at www.moneyhelperorg.uk Apply for a grant: www.bget.org Struggling with energy debt? If you’re struggling with debt it’s difficult to know where to turn. The British Gas Energy Trust would encourage you to contact your Local Money Advice Agency for help – www.moneyhelperorg. uk or alternatively there is online debt and money information online at www.turn2us.org.uk , www.StepChange.org and on the Citizens Advice website – www. citizensadvice.org.uk Our grants Once you have sought advice, the British Gas Energy Trust may be able to provide a grant Page 30
if you are struggling to pay off gas or electricity debt. Please note grants over £1,500 will only be considered in exceptional circumstances. As part of your application, we will want to understand how you will be able to manage your energy costs in future. This is why it’s so important to ensure you have sought professional money advice before applying, as there may be other routes which are more suitable for your situation.
