Issue 025-February 2018

A town in mourning Fundraising efforts for the young family of Shane Gilmer, the man with an infectious laugh who was kind to everyone… People have paid tribute to Shane in their hundreds since he was brutally murdered in his own home last month and his friends, family and complete strangers have pulled together to raise as much money as they can for Shane’s young daughters and his pregnant girlfriend, Laura. Some of his school friends have organised a charity night at the Peacock pub on North Street on April 6th to raise money to go into a trust fund for Shane’s children. There will be a £2 entry fee, a hamper raffled on the night and a head shave and wax planned for the men to raise even more money. Childhood friend Roxanne Ellis said: “After speaking with Shane’s family, they have agreed this is a fantastic idea and all proceeds raised on the night will go into a trust fund for Shane’s children. Shane is described by his friends and family as a

‘kind and hilarious man’, who didn’t have a bad word to say about anyone and had the ability to make people laugh until they cried. He has given many people treasured memories. His friends, Kelly Evans and Stacey Harrison, paid tribute to him: “We miss your smile and joking ways and all the things you used to say, the good old times we recall make us miss you most of all. Your laughter was infectious and you always made us laugh till it hurt. Our hearts are broken but we will treasure all those special memories forever, Sleep tight, Shaney baby.” There will also be a 12-hour darts marathon, a raffle and a ‘Dutch auction’ at the Creykes Arms in Rawcliffe on February 16. A fundraising page was set up after news of his death and at the time of going to print, almost £3,500 had been raised. You can donate to the fund at www.gofundme.com/for-you-shane-gilmer 9

FROM A POLICE

Keeping yourse social media

This month, Sgt David Lonsdale talks to us about social media and how to keep safe from cyber-criminals

Unpleasant comments about people on social media sites are not dealt with by the police unless there is a criminal offence involved

10

Issue 025-February 2018

E PERSPECTIVE:

elf safe on You will undoubtedly be liking and following people on social media sites already. However, the nature of social networking means that using it carries a degree of risk including becoming a target for cyber-criminals, but there are tips to keep you safe online: • Make it difficult for anyone wanting to hack your accounts by using a strong password with symbols and numbers. • Only let your friends view your posts by using appropriate privacy features on social media sites to restrict strangers accessing your profile. • Remember that the stuff you post stays online, so don’t say anything or publish pictures that might later cause you or someone else embarrassment. • Never post comments that are abusive or may cause offence to either individuals or groups of society. Unpleasant comments about people on social media sites are not dealt with by the police unless there is a criminal offence involved. Offences might include threats to kill, threats to cause damage, criminal conduct amounting to harassment and comments that incite racial hatred, violence or rioting. If this is the case call Humberside Police on 101 to report it.

For general unpleasant or inappropriate posts, in the first instance, you should contact the social media site on which the comments have been made and ask for their assistance. If you think you have been libelled to the extent you wish to take action then you should consult with a solicitor.

Crimes in your area: • An unsecured bike was stolen from a communal area in a block of flats. • A catalytic converter was stolen from a transit van parked in a business unit. •

A secure garage was broken into and searched. Items were left outside but not taken.

• A front number plate was stolen. • A shopping bag and handbag which were briefly left near the front door of a property were stolen. • A wing mirror was stolen from a car parked on the roadside. • A car was damaged in an attempt to steal it. • A car was spray painted causing damage. • An object was thrown at a property window causing it to smash.

The Rotary Club is currently looking for organisations who would like to go along and display their particular interest or hobby. There is no charge for exhibition space and tables are provided.

Last year, the event drew in the crowds, with a wide variety of stalls, including models, handmade jewellery, history groups, books and magazines, knitting, handmade cards and paintings. It is hoped that this year’s event will be as varied as ever, as the exhibition nears its 40th year. Visit the Rotary Club on Facebook by searching for ‘Rotary Club of Goole’.

Exhibition organiser, Robert Haigh, said: “We will be pleased to have exhibits, both static and mobile, demonstrations of particular hobbies and any activity that will be of interest to anyone looking for a new hobby to pursue. It is our intention to show people how their

Helping Others

Our Goole is brought to you by CreateTVT. Call 01405 819141.

The Facebook group helping locals who suffer with their mental health Helping Others, which only began in May last year and became a registered charity in August, already has over 800 members on Facebook. Nicola Vause, who started the group, told us: “I started the group because I suffered with stress, anxiety and depression at 24 years old. I was inspired to help other people by a girl who took her life and left four children. I wanted people to know that they are not alone. “We have been fundraising since we started in May and we have raised thousands of pounds, which we distribute back to worthy causes in the town. We have recently donated hampers to raffle off at fundraising events for Shane Gilmer’s family. We raise money by holding stalls at events and I also run a selling site on Facebook with all the proceeds going back to the charity. Businesses have helped us a lot with their own fundraising events and The Co-op in Old Goole has named us as its charity of the year, which is great.” 16

Rachel Pollard, from Goole, says the group has helped her with her mental health. She said: “Joining the Helping Others group has helped me to become more open about suffering with depression. For the first time in my life I realised I had no need to feel ashamed or embarrassed.” Mel Gaughan, who volunteers alongside Nicola, said: “I’d just like to say what a great person Nicola is for starting the group and giving hope and reassurance and support to so many people. Buying, selling, running around nearly every evening delivering goods to people from the Helping Others selling site. She’s up until the early hours supporting people, standing with tombola stalls for hours, raising funds and not to mention the pie and pea bingo, all free to the community.” Nicola hopes that this year the group will be able to open a charity shop in the town. You can find Helping Others by searching for Helping Others (Mental Health) on Facebook.

This month, Business Support Specialist Heidi Green, discusses the benefits of a business coach

What could a business coach do for you? No matter how successful you are in your business, none of us have all the answers. Knowing when to ask for help and who to ask can be challenging itself. Firstly, take a step back and spend some time thinking about where your business is going instead of rushing around trying to be all things to all men. Next, start working on your business, not in it. Just an hour a week in the planning

22

process can make all the difference. No matter if you employ people, work in partnership or on your own, being a business owner can be a very lonely place, who do you have to turn to for reassurance? Can you see the wood for the trees? Are you taking advantage of all the opportunities that you come across and if not why not? Quite often business owners have the aspiration to achieve great things but lack the confidence to do them, but having a

Issue 025-February 2018 sounding board and maybe someone to be accountable to can make all the difference in taking your business to the next level. From identifying new markets to turning your attention to the profitable areas in your business, outside support can be just what is required to take you out of a rut and help you achieve those goals. So, go on, do yourself and your business a favour and ask for assistance, after all, we all need that at times. For further help and advice on business growth and funding opportunities, contact Heidi Green, Senior Business Advisor for Selby District Council via email at hgreen@ selby.gov.uk or telephone 01757 292332.

Top reasons for making a will Making a will is possibly one of the most important things you can do. Not only will a will legally protect your spouse or partner, but you can also set out exactly how you would like your assets to be dealt with after your death. Although everyone’s situation can vary, below are the top reasons why we think a will should be made. Protect your family and minor children You can set out in your will who should take care of your minor children in the event of your death before they reach 18. By making a will you are ensuring that the person or people you feel are better suited will look after your children. The process will be faster after your death When making a will, you set out exactly how your estate is divided and who will deal with this. They can act as soon as you die as your will gives them the authority to do so. You can set out how your estate will be distributed A will clearly sets out your wishes as to how you would like your assets dealt with on your death. If you die having not made a will, your estate is dealt with in accordance with certain rules (called the Rules of Intestacy) and there is no guarantee that your intended wishes will be carried out.

Property expert David Leake of Housesetc talks about mortgage rates in the current climate‌

Mortgage rates

In the final three months of last year, The Bank of England reported that the difference between the base interest rate and average mortgage rates has closed substantially as demand for property exceeded availability. December 2015 was the first time The Bank of England has reported such a sharp decline in the cost of borrowing since the 2008 global financial crash. Arrears and repossession rates were at historically low levels in most areas, allowing lenders to accept lower margins on new lending. The Bank of England also reported that the

demand for credit card borrowing remained unhealthily high and banks were planning to reduce interest-free periods to make card borrowing less attractive. The prospect of another financial crash fuelled by high levels of personal debt is still a very real prospect. Unsecured personal debt, although sometimes unavoidable, should always be kept to a comfortably affordable level.

This month we have looked at the transport and travel job sector and what prospects and career development working in the industry can offer

Ever considered a career in the passenger transport and travel industry? This industry delivers crucial transport and travel services around the UK and abroad and is made up of travel, aviation, rail, bus, coach and taxi and private hire Passenger transport and travel is critical to the UK economy, accounting for over 735,000 jobs. The Government continues to invest in the industry because of its importance so it makes sense that a career in passenger transport and travel can offer security, particularly at a time when finding work can be such a challenge. The prime focus is on transporting passengers in a safe and efficient manner. However, customer service is key to its success. Delivering what passengers want means that much of the work is 30

non-stop to meet customer demand. Trains, planes, buses and coaches can run all day and all night in some cases. Resort reps are on hand to meet and greet holiday makers at all hours of the day. Taxis and driving instructors organise their working hours according to the demand of their clients. This means the industry is a flexible employer, with staff required to work shifts, allowing people to work around other needs and commitments, such as families or studying. What are the options? You can get out on the road,

work in an office environment, chat with the customers, cruise at 30,000 feet, teach future talent, repair vital equipment – it’s your career, you’re in the driving seat. Have you considered being a customer service assistant, operations manager, resort rep, airport information assistant, engineering manager or even managing director? Passenger transport and travel has a variety of roles with excellent potential to move into management. For further information, please contact your local Jobcentre or search online for www.careersthatmove.co.uk

Rawcliffe Petanque Club

In the winter of 2012 a public meeting was held in Rawcliffe Gospel Hall to discuss who may be interested in playing boules in the village. Twenty people turned up and just a few months later, in the spring of 2013, Rawcliffe Petanque Club was formed. The club, which started playing on the smaller of the two village greens, on grass, proved to be a great way for men and women of all ages and physical abilities to do regular, outdoor exercise and socialise. The club was officially opened on August 29, 2015, in the presence of members and residents of Rawcliffe. The terrain was officially opened by Kath Royston, who had given the club a 34

donation at its formation and followed the club’s progress with interest. Also in attendance were MP Andrew Percy, East Riding Councillors John Barrett and Caroline Fox and Adam Toes from the council’s sports and development team. Player Michael Johnson told us: “Membership to date is almost 20 people, ranging from students to over-65s coming from Snaith, Goole, Hemingbrough, Howden and Rawcliffe to play. Our latest player is a Hull resident who has lived and played in France.” The club meet twice a week on Tuesday and Saturday afternoons during the winter months, which will change during spring and summer.
