project set to reach impressive heights In a previous issue of Our Goole we covered the Youth Build a Plane project, pioneered by local charity The Spirit of Goole. Now, the plane is complete and ready to fly, so we thought we’d get you filled in and up to date For the past two-and-a-half-years, engineers, pilots, volunteers and students from Goole Academy have been building a light aircraft as part of a groundbreaking community project. The plane, which has now been successfully test flown, will remain in Goole and be used for flying lessons for students.
Former RAF mechanic, Jack Milnes, set up the local charity, The Spirit of Goole (TSOG), to enable young people to learn life skills outside of a classroom including metalwork, engineering, motor mechanics, electrical engineering and, of course, aerodynamics, with the incentive that they will then all go on to fly the plane. completed its final flight tests last month and, at the time this issue went to print, it is awaiting its permit to fly. The youngsters have been supported by a small but dedicated team of local adults from all sorts of backgrounds including a former BAE engineer, a number of retired mechanics and an accountant. The test pilot was Simon Johnston, a highly experienced pilot with thousands of hours experience on gliders, prop, turbo-prop and jets. He completed the test flights and said that TSOG was a great plane. Simon also completed a check ride with TSOG pilot Chris Milnes who, along with Andy Pearson, will be spending as much time as the weather allows with the youngsters who built the aircraft, around the skies of Northern England and maybe beyond.
Andy told us: ‘The project has been extremely important to the young team. As a direct result, a number of the youngsters have been offered apprenticeships and even jobs, with many more gaining great new life skills, communication skills and self confidence. ‘The plan now is to turn the students into pilots. TSOG will be working with local flight instructors to train a minimum of four teenagers so they get a Light Aircraft Pilot License (LAPL) Private Pilots License (PPL), and we’ll keep you aware of progress. ‘On behalf of TSOG, I’d like to thank all our sponsors. There are too many to list but without them this would never have been able to happen.’ Keep an eye on the charities website, www.thespiritofgoole.co.uk for further news

FROM A POLICE
Staying aware of telephone scams
These sort of scams are becoming increasingly common, so this month, Sgt David Lonsdale wants to share with you some top tips to ensure you avoid them
‘Not sure what a telephone scam sounds like? Don’t worry you’re not alone’
8
Issue 012 - January 2017
E PERSPECTIVE: ‘Telephone scams typically involve fraudsters deceiving victims into believing they are speaking to a police officer, a member of bank staff, or a representative of another trusted organisation, such as a well-known computer company in order to steal money. ‘This month, we want to try and limit the amount of times this happens across Goole and the surrounding areas. ‘Avoid falling for a scam by always being on your guard if you receive a cold call and are asked for any of the following: • Personal or financial information, for example full name, date of birth, address, passwords, bank details, security numbers etc. • You are asked to transfer or withdraw money. • You are asked to hand over your credit/debit card or cash to someone e.g. a courier who will call and collect it. ‘The bank or the police will never tell you to take these actions or ask you for financial information. If you are asked to do any of these things, someone is trying to con you. ‘If in doubt, call back the organisation on a number you trust, but do it on another phone or leave it at least five minutes before you make the call. This is important because criminals are able to keep the line open for two minutes after you put down the phone, which means you could end up inadvertently talking to the criminal or their accomplice again. ‘Not sure what a telephone scam sounds like? Don’t worry - you’re not alone. Here’s a couple of examples so you know what to watch out for. What they say: “We believe there is a fault on your computer but we can fix this now if you give us your card details to make a payment”. What we say: “Say no thank you and put the telephone down. Do not engage in further conversation as these people can be very persuasive and before you know it they will have access to your computer and can freeze/lock it”. What they say: “We are ringing on behalf of the bank and believe that someone is trying to access your bank account, if you give me your current bank details I’ll create a new account and transfer your money over into your new account immediately”. What we say: “Do not give out any information, inform the caller that you will go to your own bank to speak to someone face to face and put the phone down”. For other hints and tips log onto www.actionfraud.police.uk.’

Goole development given green light A new large-scale employment and distribution hub in Goole has been given the go-ahead, bringing 3,000 new and sustainable jobs to the local area Back in the March issue of Our Goole, we shared the news that the 2.14 million sq ft proposals by Sterling Capitol and the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) had been given unanimous approval by the East Riding of Yorkshire planning committee.
There are two elements to the planned development by Junction 36 of the M62; Goole 36 which comprises a total of 96.4 acres across a larger area of the overall site, promoted by the HCA for direct development and Capitol Park, which covers 32 acres and is owned by Leeds-based Sterling Capitol.
The outline planning consent has now been fully approved by the council, meaning the prestigious development will go ahead.
This offers design and build development opportunities, together with retail units on the northern end of the site by the M62.
Mike Heydecke, director of Sterling Capitol, said: ‘This is tremendous news. Although our proposals were approved in principle in February, there were a number of planning conditions and hurdles still to be sorted out.
Goole 36 and Capitol Park will include a mix of industrial property and warehouse units, together with retail and leisure facilities and car showrooms – plus a 100-bed hotel.
‘These have all been satisfied so now we can crack on with this exciting development, which will provide a muchneeded boost to the area’s economy.’
The 2.14 million sq ft site has direct access to the M62 and the Port of Goole and sits within the Humber Enterprise Zone with potential for a dedicated rail link.

Ali’s Angels on track to reach impressive milestone Local people are raising money for an inspirational woman from Goole who has been diagnosed with incurable brain cancer Ali Coulthard, 45, was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer in 2009 and was given between 12 and 14 months to live. From that moment, she refused to feel negative and now, seven years on, Ali is still refusing to give up the fight. Following intensive chemotherapy and radiotherapy, Ali decided to throw herself into raising much-needed funds for charity. She decided to set up Ali’s Angels with her mum and two school friends and together they have raised an incredible £96,500 for Cancer Research UK. Jeanette Bird, Ali’s school friend and dedicated angel told Our Goole: ‘Our next milestone is £100,000 - that moment will be incredible and highly emotional for us all.’ In September 2016, Ali was admitted to hospital after suffering from unexplained complications. At the time this magazine went to print, Ali had lost the use of her left hand side. Jeanette told us: ‘At the minute, Ali isn’t able to do basic things on her own. She’s started physiotherapy and, in true Ali style, she’s determined to give it her all, but there is an undeniably tough road ahead of her.’ 12
Although Ali’s Angels are still raising money for Cancer Research, a Go Fund Me page specifically for Ali has been set up by her friends to help her afford the medical, practical and personal support she will need when she returns home from hospital. Jeannette said: ‘I, along with the rest of Ali’s friends and family, feel that after everything she has done for us and for Cancer Research over the years, it’s time we gave her something back. We’re hoping we’ll raise enough to get her home to her family and to make her life a little bit easier when we do. ‘We see a donation to Ali’s page as an investment really the sooner we get her home and feeling better, the sooner she will be back out raising money for Cancer Research UK. ‘Those who meet Ali never forget her, so we’re hoping all of those people will support her in her time of need. I will do anything for Ali and I know that everyone involved with her fundraising efforts are so proud to be her angels.’ To donate directly to Ali visit www.gofundme.com/invest-in-ali-2v7yazmc Donate to Ali’s Angels via Paypal using the email address alis.angels@outlook.com

Get fit Our Goole writer Becky Stubbs visited Tone Zone

Issue 012 - January 2017
t this New Year Back in August, Our Goole previewed the exciting refurbishment of the Tone Zone fitness suite and indoor cycling studio at East Riding Leisure Goole. To mark the beginning of the redevelopment’s first full year, our content writer, Becky Stubbs, went along to see how the £300,000 project is working out (pun intended!) Joining a gym when you’re not a fitness fanatic can be an intimidating experience. It isn’t unusual to be greeted by a room full of dedicated gym goers with ‘perfect’ bodies and staff that explain the equipment using complicated phrases you’ve never heard before. The whole process of being a ‘newbie’ can be enough to put some people off, which was why it was refreshing to be greeted at Tone Zone by a warm, friendly atmosphere and a gym full of diverse local people all working at different fitness levels. The brand new Tone Zone fitness suite and indoor cycling studio was a £300,000 project that opened its doors on August 29 last year, bringing stateof-the-art equipment and a new exercise programme to East Riding Leisure Goole. The 70-station redevelopment features a four-station TRX wall, a new free weights area, a matted area for floor exercises as well as three multifunctional trainer machines, two power plates and all new cardio and strength machines. The new cycling studio is full of high-quality Keiser bikes and an impressive sound system. David Halkon, centre manager, is thrilled with the success Tone Zone has had since its reopening last summer. He told me: ‘It’s encouraging to see how many people love the new Tone Zone. It’s used by such a wide variety of people and it’s clear that Tone Zone is more than just a gym, it’s a community. ‘People who visit regularly often make new friends and our great staff are always on hand to help you achieve your goals, whatever they might be.’
And David appeared to be telling the truth - the gym was full of people working at a variety of paces and toward different goals and achievements. Mike Fox, Tone Zone fitness co-ordinator told me: ‘At Tone Zone we understand and respect that fitness is really diverse and we are more than happy to help everyone that walks through our doors find a workout that suits them.’ On my visit to Tone Zone, I was able to speak to one dedicated gym member, Paul Roberts, 65, who has had a new lease of life since signing up for a membership. When he stepped into Tone Zone four years ago, Paul, who relied heavily on walking sticks, was too heavy to receive a life-changing hip replacement. In a bid to lose weight to be able to go through with the operation, Paul joined Tone Zone. He has since lost seven stone and had two successful hip replacements. He explained: ‘I visit Tone Zone every day and I love it - especially since the exciting refurbishment. Exercise really is for everyone - Tone Zone has shown me that.’ East Riding Leisure Goole is also home to a swimming pool and slide, offers children’s parties as well as a well equipped sports hall and courts. Tone Zone has gone from strength to strength and 2017 is set to bring even more improvements including a revamped sports hall and spruced-up changing rooms. TRX classes are set to launch this month too - a performance training tool developed by US special forces that uses gravity and the user’s body weight for resistance, providing a full body work out using an endless amount of different exercises. No matter what your level of fitness, age or ability, it’s clear that there is something for everyone at Tone Zone. So if you’re looking to get fit this new year and want to join a friendly gym with the highest quality equipment and expert staff then Tone Zone could be the gym for you. 15

New year, new multi-service centre for locals in Howden The council’s new multi-service centre will be open to the public from Monday, January 9, 2017 Work is almost complete on the refurbishment and the remodelling of the previous customer service centre in the town, which will now incorporate the library and the children’s centre. Howden Library in the Shire Hall closed at the end of December and will reopen at the new Howden Centre from Monday, January 9.
The new multi-service centre will provide a wide selection of library stock, three public access computers with internet, one junior public access computer, and printing and scanning facilities, as well as a self-service enquiry and payment kiosk.
The Howden Centre is the latest multi-service building to be developed in key towns across the East Riding and is part of the council’s drive to lower running costs whilst seeking to improve access to services.
Councillor Richard Burton, portfolio holder for civic wellbeing and culture, said: ‘This is very exciting news for Howden. I am delighted that once again our prudent financial management over many years means we have been able to invest in significant improvements in the town.
This will provide greater flexibility, allowing residents to carry out a wide variety of transactions at their own convenience.
‘I am particularly pleased that the new centre will offer 20 hours of library opening per week, compared to the current 15 hours per week.’

Could you join Goole’s new Marie Curie fundraising team? Marie Curie is appealing for volunteers in Goole and the surrounding villages to take on key roles within a new fundraising committee Marie Curie are specifically looking for people who know their community well and can get people involved in local fundraising activities and yearly campaigns. The new local fundraising committee will meet in Goole on a monthly basis. They also need to have good communication skills to be able to talk to people about Marie Curie and spread the word about what they do and how people can support them. Most of all, they need to be passionate about having fun while fundraising for Marie Curie. Natalie Atherley, Marie Curie Community Fundraiser, told Our Goole: ‘We need people with a broad range of skills to help us with our local fundraising activities, from people with the gift of the gab right through to organisers who can come up with event ideas. ‘We also need as many Helper volunteers as possible to 18
dedicate a small amount of their time visiting people with a terminal illness, offering companionship, emotional support and practical help with everyday tasks. ‘So if you think you’ve got a couple of hours a month that you’d be able to give to support the local Marie Curie nursing service, please get in touch.’ Funds raised for Marie Curie allow people with a terminal illness to access high-quality nursing care in the comfort of their own homes for free. Marie Curie helps people throughout their illness by giving practical information, support from trained volunteers and being there when someone wants to talk. If you would like to get involved with the fundraising group or if you would like to find out more about Marie Curie and other ways you can support them, please contact Natalie Atherley on 01904 755260 or email natalie.atherley@mariecurie.org.uk.

Goole?
Our fast facts will make sure you’re clued up on your home town this new year
When you live somewhere for a long time, it’s easy to overlook the interesting facts and history sitting right on your doorstep. At Our Goole, we want to make sure that doesn’t happen. So why don’t you pour yourself a cuppa, get comfy and indulge in these fantastic local facts?
Its 145ft water tower is the biggest in England. It holds an impressive 750,000 gallons.
Goole is twinned with Zlotow, a town in Poland. Before the reform of local Government in 1974, Goole was a part of the West Riding of Yorkshire. Sections of the Mulberry Harbour used in the D-Day landings were constructed in Goole and floated to France.
The Mayor of Goole, Terence Smith, is Britain’s youngest mayor, aged just 19.
The word Goole is an Anglo-Saxon word meaning ‘open sewer’ or ‘outlet to a river’.
Goole Shipyard built the Blue Bird IV luxury motor yacht for word speed champion Sir Malcolm Campbell in 1938. 21

In this month’s Business Column, Business Support Specialist Heidi Green explains the importance of communicating with members of the public while running a business
Are you nervous speaking to people you don’t know? Irrelevant of the type of business you are in, it is vital that you learn to communicate with people you have never met previously - how else are you going to engage with new clients and grow your business? Talking to new people is by far the most effective way of allowing people to get to know you and trust you. Think about it - they are the people who are going to be buying from you and your business. By avoiding speaking to people, what are you missing out on? It’s your responsibility to find and
start engaging with them. Effective communication is clearly delivered and understood, and you need to understand the benefits of what you are selling and what the problem is you are solving for your clients. Confidence in communicating is an essential business skill that is key for you and your staff. Get up to date now! Business Support York & North Yorkshire have 30 years experience of giving clients the knowledge and confidence to communicate with their potential clients. Brand new year, brand new job?
Our Goole is brought to you by CreateTVT. Call 01405 819141.
Are you in need of a career change this new year?
Dave Waller, representing the Jobcentres across East Riding, wants to share with you his top tips for finding work in 2017. Getting a new job is one of the most popular New Year’s resolutions people make, but don’t get lost in the crowd - there are plenty of ways to make you stand out when applying for work
1 3
Firstly, make sure you’re looking in the right place for jobs - you can use the internet, newspapers, recruitment agencies and Jobcentreplus centres across the country.
You don’t have to be receiving state benefits to use Universal Jobmatch, the governmentrun jobs website - you just need to create an account. There are up to one million live adverts at any one time, and an average of 4.5 million job searches every day.
7
Some companies will ask for a covering letter. You should use this as a way to sell yourself and explain why you’re right for the job. Also, it’s worth getting someone to check it for spelling and grammar mistakes - it’s not enough to rely on a computer spellcheck.
28
4
When writing your CV, think about what you’ve learnt from previous jobs or what you’ve learnt in school or college. Include examples to show your experience.
6 8
2
LinkedIn has a big recruitment section - have you got an account? If not then consider it. It’s free, and a great way to demonstrate who you are and what experience you have.
5
If you’re worried about your age, don’t include it on your CV. There’s no requirement to do so.
Even if you’re short of experience in the workplace, there are key skills that employers look for that anyone can demonstrate including being able to communicate well with other people, evidence of team work and IT skills you can have developed these through hobbies or at home. Make sure you research the organisation, to see what work they are currently doing and to find out their latest news. Showing you have an understanding of the industry will also set you apart from other interviewees.
9
Dressing smartly, being on time and asking at least one question about the role you’ve applied for are also good ways to impress interviewers.
Anyone currently claiming working age benefits including Jobseeker’s Allowance, Employment and Support Allowance, Income Support and Universal Credit, can contact their local Jobcentre on 0345 604 371 for further help and advice. Our Goole has teamed up with Jobcentreplus to bring you all of the latest local job opportunities. This month we’ve launched a brand new job tab on our website that we’ll be updating daily with vacancies across Goole, Howden, Selby, Hull and the surrounding areas. Visit www.ourgoole.co.uk/local-jobs or like Our Goole Job Board on Facebook to see all of the opportunities available.

After a year of political surprises and economic uncertainty, the National Association of Estate Agents (NAEA) have shared their predictions for the property market in 2017. • There is unlikely to be extensive house price inflation in 2017 and the number of transactions will remain steady; almost half (43 per cent) of member estate agents expect prices to stay the same.
• As house price inflation stalls, first time buyers (FTBs) should find it easier to enter the market. In October 2016, 32 per cent of total sales made were to FTBs – a nine per cent rise from September and the highest number since records began 16 years

Issue 012 - January 2017 ago in 2000. The last time the number of sales to FTBs was at a similar level was in October 2015, when 31 per cent of sales were made to FTBs. • Encouragingly, almost a third (29 per cent) of NAEA agents think sales to first time buyers will continue to increase in 2017. • While help for first time buyers is currently focused on new builds, we should now focus on helping them to buy older properties – ‘fixer uppers’ are better value for money in the long term and excellent for local businesses. • The Government has defined its new housebuilding targets numerous times but we still haven’t seen a significant increase in the number of properties being built. In 2017, we need to see these promises converted into bricks and mortar for a better housing market for all. Healthy levels of FTBs will stimulate the market above them, allowing families to move upmarket. Now you’re fully informed about what next year could hold, I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a happy and prosperous 2017.

Business of the
month
Meet the two brothers dedicated to providing you with the best storage solutions in the area
Working with family can be a risky move but for Richard and Ross Stewart, proud owners of Selby Self Storage, their success in business is a clear indicator that sometimes teaming up with a family member can pay off Richard, when was Selby Self Storage founded? We set up Selby Self Storage back in 2003. We’d been providing commercial storage for over 15 years but had been receiving more and more enquiries regarding domestic storage. It made sense to take the plunge and expand. Can you tell us about the services you offer? Selby Self Storage are proud to offer the best storage solutions our clean, secure insulated indoor purpose built units vary in size from 15 sq ft to 150 sq ft. We also offer clean, dry outside container storage. Our containers are bought new so don’t expect leaky old ones that have sailed the seven seas. Our staff will be happy to help and ensure you rent the right space for your needs. Selby Self Storage also offers open warehouse floor space - this can be 36
used for anything from pallets to theatre sets. We also offer a load-on load-off fork lift service.
monitored the storage areas to ensure no one removed another person’s pot or its contents.
What makes you stand out from other businesses offering similar services? We have invested heavily in a modern insulated storage centre with clean modern rooms including CCTV and a state-of-the-art alarm and entry system. We guarantee you will not find a cleaner, more secure storage solution for miles.
From a business perspective, how do you find the local area? It’s a great location as the M62, A1 and A19 are so accessible. The fact that Goole, York and Leeds are all so nearby is great too.
Do you have any interesting facts about Selby Self Storage? I find the concept of self storage interesting in itself. It came about 6,000 years ago in what is now Xi’an, China. People would place their belongings such as to-do lists etched in turtle shell, bamboo reed flip-flops, collectible spearheads, and family heirloom jewellery - in clay pots and store them in underground pits. Guards
What does the future hold for Selby Self Storage? We have another branch in Scunthorpe, Scunthorpe Self Storage, and are always looking for other possible sites and opportunities in the region. We always have our eyes on expansion. Lastly, what are the main benefits you find to advertising in our magazines? We love the fact that we can reach local households and businesses on a regular basis through the magazines.

SPORTSNEWS Local landlady helps save Snaith IPL After an incredibly competitive and dramatic season, Snaith Independent Pool League season has come to a close Premiership winner Anthony Myers and Championship winner Roly Curley, both local to Goole, have put down their cues and taken away their trophies and winnings now that the Snaith IPL is over. Both winners were thrilled with their achievements, but this season wasn’t as straightforward as the players would have liked. Midway through the season, the players had to move pubs and were left struggling to find a venue. Eventually, they were taken in at the Downe Arms in Snaith. Snaith IPL committee member, Steve Hayes, told Our Goole: ‘We’d like to take this opportunity to not only thank all of those in the league, but also Sandra from the Downe Arms who was able to give us a place to continue the league from. ‘She has been absolutely amazing and deserves a huge amount of thanks. ‘The new season is starting so we’d like to wish all members of the Snaith IPL a great season and the best of luck.’
Further signings for Goole AFC Last month saw two familiar faces return to Goole AFC. Matt Semley returns to the club for his third spell, with the midfielder having re-signed from NCEL side Maltby Main. Also returning to the club is Rob Constable, the local midfielder who was previously at the club from 2005 to 2009 and made over 100 appearances. He has more recently been playing for Goole United in the Humber Premier League. 40
