Our Goole Christ Over 600 gifts collected and distributed to local families in need for Christmas Last year we launched Our Goole’s first ever Christmas toy appeal and it was such a huge success that we couldn’t fit all the gifts in one photograph! Literally hundreds of presents were collected by a number of fantastic local businesses and individuals and given out to local families so their children had something to open on Christmas morning. 6
Jo Evans of the Hull and East Yorkshire Credit Union, which helped collect and distribute presents, said: “We have a number of families we work with who have massively benefitted from this toy appeal. It was so great to be involved and I found it quite emotional seeing the looks on the faces of the parents when they saw the presents and realised they were able to choose something for their children. “This has made such a big difference to so many families in our area. Without the toy appeal,

tmas Toy Appeal some of these children would have had little to look forward to. The look on the parents’ faces was just priceless and that will stay with me for a long time. I feel so proud to have been involved.” Lisa Warrener, director of Our Goole, said: “We were absolutely blown away by the amount of presents we received for the appeal but not entirely surprised either. We know what a fantastic community we have in Goole and the well-known Goolie spirit has meant that so many children received presents on Christmas morning, ones who otherwise might not have received anything. The people of Goole are well known for pulling together to help others in
times of need and this toy appeal once again proved that to be true. “We’d like to say a massive thank you to everyone who donated and all the local businesses that collected presents for the appeal. We’d like to say a particularly big thank you to Specsavers on Boothferry Road, who filled their huge box several times over and also held a hamper raffle with all the proceeds from the ticket sales going towards buying more gifts for the appeal.” We will be running an Easter egg appeal very soon. E PERSPECTIVE: We need to think about security throughout the year to prevent ourselves from becoming victims of crime. Below are some simple security measures that can be taken to help protect you and your vehicles:

• Keep your car keys safe and out of sight, don’t leave them near an open window and if you are at work, ensure that you keep your keys with you at all times (don’t leave them in your vehicle).

And the hamper win Congratulations to Philip Moore, who won last year’s Our Goole Christmas hamper! The Our Goole team went on to one of the main shopping streets in Goole and left a hamper full of Christmas goodies, including chocolates, crackers and wine, and waited in the wings for someone to pick it up. The first person to pick it up and shout ‘Our Goole Christmas hamper’ got to keep the goodies. Winner Philip told us: “I had seen that the competition was running and once I’d seen they were heading out with the hamper my shoes were on and I readied myself for when the live feed came on! The second it came on I knew exactly where to
go so I headed from Pasture Road up to Paradise Place, raised my arms in victory shouting, ‘Our Goole Christmas hamper!’ The chocolates and biscuits were quickly claimed by my little boy and as for the wine, I enjoyed that! I decided to share the rest of the contents of the hamper with my family. It was a lovely Christmas treat for us all, thank you Our Goole!” Lisa Warrener, director of Our Goole, said: “This was the second year we had run this competition, and we had such fun doing it the year before, we decided to do it again. Improvements to Oakhill Country Park You might not even know it exists, but locals are being encouraged to visit Oakhill Nature Reserve in Goole to enjoy some fresh air and the great outdoors
Oakhill Country Park is a significant area of natural green space about one mile west of the centre of Goole, and includes a mixture of woodlands, ponds and a large lake, as well as meadows and conservation land set aside for biodiversity. East Riding of Yorkshire Council has said it is committed to creating a new country park for the people of Goole, and for visitors to the town, in association with the owners of the land in the area. Taking care of the site and protecting it for future generations is a large group of volunteers called the Friends of Oakhill, who assist all the local landowners to make the area a safe and enjoyable place to visit. In addition, the Joint Local Access Forum also advises the council on helping to improve the opportunities for people across the East Riding to enjoy the countryside and take part in outdoor recreation, including at Oakhill.

The council has recently put up new signage to make it easier for visitors to find Oakhill and, in particular, its car park. Other recent improvement work includes new benches, upgraded paths, interpretation boards and sculptures. Oakhill already offers a nature reserve trail, pond-dipping platforms, reed beds and a viewing point. The council’s countryside access manager, Patrick Wharam, said: “I am delighted that we have been able to provide these new signs for Oakhill which just make it that bit easier to find and that bit more welcoming to visitors. Joy in bundles When Claire Raper founded Bundles of Joy, she was not expecting her small idea to turn into a fully fledged charity supporting hundreds of families in the area

We recognise that, for too many families, the expense of providing for a baby becomes too much to bear, and that compromises are made either on the quality of the baby items themselves, or funds are diverted from other parts of the family budget leaving families vulnerable to debt.”
Claire added: “As a community we are all pulling together to help make a difference. This last year has been an amazing one with 2018 looking the same already. We have just been selected as Hymers College Charity of 2018 which is wonderful news and we look forward to working with them too. I couldn’t do it without the amazing help of volunteer Clare Johnson and my trustees. As a team we are really getting the best out of what we can offer. We don’t do it for a wage, we do it through dedication, care and the desire to help make a difference.”

Legal focus: Unmarried couples and wills According to a recent survey conducted by the Office for National Statistics, there are more than three million cohabiting couple families in the UK, accounting for 16.4 per cent of all families in the UK. This demographic has increased by almost 30 per cent in a decade and is the fastest growing type of family in the UK. With a little over 40 per cent of adults in the UK having a will, many people are unaware that surviving partners are at serious risk of not receiving anything if their partner dies. If a couple is not married and one dies, the surviving partner will not receive any part of an estate unless assets are held in joint names. One of the more commonly seen examples is in relation to the family home. Many people would expect that the home would be passed to them upon the death of their partner but sadly this is not necessarily the case. The estate is usually passed to the deceased’s children in this instance and, if the couple have no children, it can be passed to parents, siblings and extended family members, even those who you may not necessarily wish to receive any part of the estate. Making a will is the only way of ensuring a partner receives part or even all of the assets. A will is a lot easier to prepare than many people would imagine and ensures that your final wishes are upheld.

Whether you are a cycling enthusiast or not, it’s hard not to get excited about the Tour De Yorkshire, especially when this year, it will be passing our doorstep! Last year 9.7 million viewers in 180 different countries tuned in to the Tour De Yorkshire and the event generated £64 million for the Yorkshire economy. This year, businesses close to home will also benefit from the economic boost the race brings when it passes through the area during stage one of the tour. Day one of the race will take place on Thursday, May 3rd and see the cyclists covering 182km of ground with the starting point being in Beverley. 34
They will then proceed to the seaside resort of Hornsea and the peloton will then tackle a 16km loop before heading back through Beverley and into the Yorkshire Wolds. The first classified climb at Baggaby Hill will get the legs pumping before a brisk descent into Pocklington for the opening intermediate sprint. After passing through Holme-on-Spalding Moor the pace will gradually ramp up again for a second sprint in Howden, then Airmyn, on to Rawcliffe and then it’s full steam into Doncaster on the

Tour De Yorkshire is coming to town! newly opened Great Yorkshire Way. The riders will sweep past the world-famous racecourse before a flat-out finish along South Parade. No doubt, thousands of people will line the streets along the way to cheer the cyclists on, meaning it could be one of the busiest days Goole and Howden has ever seen. Mel Walker, a founder and member of the Goole Roadies Cycling Club (GRCC), told us: “The Tour De Yorkshire increases visibility of cycling in general and the benefits, which not only include health and fitness but social ones too. The Tour is an exciting event with lots of sponsors and hype, which elevates people’s views of cycling. “At Goole Roadies Cycling Club we welcome all ages
and abilities. As one of a number of women that ride within the group I can say that joining has allowed me to meet like-minded people. There’s something for everyone - it’s not all just middleaged men in lycra!” Scott Caughey, another founder and member of GRCC, added: “A bloke that owns a bike shop in France, who has a pro cyclist friend, told him that after the Tour De France, the Tour De Yorkshire was the best race he’d ridden due to the fans.
