Our Goole Christ Over 600 gifts collected and distributed to local families in need for Christmas Last year we launched Our Goole’s first ever Christmas toy appeal and it was such a huge success that we couldn’t fit all the gifts in one photograph! Literally hundreds of presents were collected by a number of fantastic local businesses and individuals and given out to local families so their children had something to open on Christmas morning. 6

Jo Evans of the Hull and East Yorkshire Credit Union, which helped collect and distribute presents, said: “We have a number of families we work with who have massively benefitted from this toy appeal. It was so great to be involved and I found it quite emotional seeing the looks on the faces of the parents when they saw the presents and realised they were able to choose something for their children. “This has made such a big difference to so many families in our area. Without the toy appeal,

Issue 024-January 2018

tmas Toy Appeal some of these children would have had little to look forward to. The look on the parents’ faces was just priceless and that will stay with me for a long time. I feel so proud to have been involved.” Lisa Warrener, director of Our Goole, said: “We were absolutely blown away by the amount of presents we received for the appeal but not entirely surprised either. We know what a fantastic community we have in Goole and the well-known Goolie spirit has meant that so many children received presents on Christmas morning, ones who otherwise might not have received anything. The people of Goole are well known for pulling together to help others in

times of need and this toy appeal once again proved that to be true. “We’d like to say a massive thank you to everyone who donated and all the local businesses that collected presents for the appeal. We’d like to say a particularly big thank you to Specsavers on Boothferry Road, who filled their huge box several times over and also held a hamper raffle with all the proceeds from the ticket sales going towards buying more gifts for the appeal.” We will be running an Easter egg appeal very soon. Look out for further details in the next issue and on the Our Goole Facebook page and website www.ourgoole.co.uk 7

I BELIEVE IN UNICORN Spell-binding story for the whole family is set to hit the stage at Junction Olivier Award-nominated production company, Wizard Presents, brings best-selling children’s author Michael Morpurgo’s treasured story to life in this stage adaptation. This intimate show is set in a library full of books that hold more than just stories within their pages. Tomas loves playing outdoors and he hates school, books and being dragged to the library by his mother. But his world is turned upside down the day he meets the Unicorn and the Unicorn Lady and is spellbound by their story. This show allows you to discover the power of storytelling to transform lives as Tomas, with his newfound love of books, becomes instrumental in saving his burning library when his village is devastated by

war. I Believe in Unicorns has won an Argus Angel Award for Artistic Excellence at Brighton Festival and has already been seen and enjoyed by over 60,000 people. This includes two hugely successful seasons at Vaudeville Theatre in London’s West End, a Christmas season at Orange Tree Theatre, Richmond, and part of Imagine Children’s Festival 2016 at Royal Festival Hall on the Southbank. The show will take place at Junction, Goole. Tickets are priced at £6.50 for adults and £5 for children. The performance starts at 6pm on Tuesday, March 20th and is suitable for ages six upwards. Visit www.junctiongoole.co.uk to book or call the box office on 01405 763652.

FROM A POLICE Vehicle Security This month, Sgt David Lonsdale talks to us about security measures we can take to protect us from becoming victims of theft

‘There is a growing trend for work vans to be targeted, so keep valuable tools in your home if you are self-employed or at your workplace.’

10

Issue 024-January 2018

E PERSPECTIVE: We need to think about security throughout the year to prevent ourselves from becoming victims of crime. Below are some simple security measures that can be taken to help protect you and your vehicles:

Crimes in your area:

• Keep your car keys safe and out of sight, don’t leave them near an open window and if you are at work, ensure that you keep your keys with you at all times (don’t leave them in your vehicle).

• Both sets of number plates

• Never hang them near to doors where they could be taken through a letterbox.

were stolen from a car parked in a car park. • A secure bicycle was stolen

• Never leave house or car keys in an obvious place like a handbag or key cupboard.

from a bike rack outside a shop in Goole.

• If you’ve got a garage, use it and lock it!

• A secure vehicle was stolen

from Mond Avenue and later found abandoned.

Always keep all the windows closed and the vehicle locked at all times - even if you intend going back to it, for example to remove shopping bags or to collect/remove equipment, as it only takes a criminal seconds to open a door and steal something on display!

• Over the next few winter months, don’t leave your car engine running to assist in defrosting your car without being there as you run the risk of having your car stolen. • If your car/van doesn’t have an alarm/immobiliser then consider getting one fitted. •

There is a growing trend for work vans to be targeted, so keep valuable tools in your home if you are self-employed or at your workplace. No tools means no work and a big bill to replace them. Security mark all your tools and equipment to make items uniquely identifiable and less attractive to a thief. You can also register them on www.immobilise.com so that if they were ever stolen and then recovered at a later date they can easily be traced back to their owner.

If you have any concerns or want to report a suspicious vehicle then contact us by calling the non-emergency number 101 or 999 in an emergency, or if a crime is occurring.

• A corrosive substance was

poured over a car causing damage to the paintwork. • Two youths were seen to

damage a car before leaving the scene. • A male gained entry into

an unsecure property but was disturbed and left. • A secure Mercedes car was

stolen from a car park. • A male suspect was

disturbed in a burglary and fled. • A homeowner disturbed

an attempted break-in at their property.

And the hamper win Congratulations to Philip Moore, who won last year’s Our Goole Christmas hamper! The Our Goole team went on to one of the main shopping streets in Goole and left a hamper full of Christmas goodies, including chocolates, crackers and wine, and waited in the wings for someone to pick it up. The first person to pick it up and shout ‘Our Goole Christmas hamper’ got to keep the goodies. Winner Philip told us: “I had seen that the competition was running and once I’d seen they were heading out with the hamper my shoes were on and I readied myself for when the live feed came on! The second it came on I knew exactly where to

go so I headed from Pasture Road up to Paradise Place, raised my arms in victory shouting, ‘Our Goole Christmas hamper!’ The chocolates and biscuits were quickly claimed by my little boy and as for the wine, I enjoyed that! I decided to share the rest of the contents of the hamper with my family. It was a lovely Christmas treat for us all, thank you Our Goole!” Lisa Warrener, director of Our Goole, said: “This was the second year we had run this competition, and we had such fun doing it the year before, we decided to do it again. We live streamed the whole

Lots of people simply walked straight past, unsure of what to do. Eventually, Philip arrived and shouted the all-important phrase and got to take the hamper away! We hope you enjoyed sharing your hamper with your family, Philip!”

Improvements to Oakhill Country Park You might not even know it exists, but locals are being encouraged to visit Oakhill Nature Reserve in Goole to enjoy some fresh air and the great outdoors

Oakhill Country Park is a significant area of natural green space about one mile west of the centre of Goole, and includes a mixture of woodlands, ponds and a large lake, as well as meadows and conservation land set aside for biodiversity. East Riding of Yorkshire Council has said it is committed to creating a new country park for the people of Goole, and for visitors to the town, in association with the owners of the land in the area. Taking care of the site and protecting it for future generations is a large group of volunteers called the Friends of Oakhill, who assist all the local landowners to make the area a safe and enjoyable place to visit. In addition, the Joint Local Access Forum also advises the council on helping to improve the opportunities for people across the East Riding to enjoy the countryside and take part in outdoor recreation, including at Oakhill.

16

The council has recently put up new signage to make it easier for visitors to find Oakhill and, in particular, its car park. Other recent improvement work includes new benches, upgraded paths, interpretation boards and sculptures. Oakhill already offers a nature reserve trail, pond-dipping platforms, reed beds and a viewing point. The council’s countryside access manager, Patrick Wharam, said: “I am delighted that we have been able to provide these new signs for Oakhill which just make it that bit easier to find and that bit more welcoming to visitors. It is very pleasing that all the partners involved are progressing steadily on Oakhill, and that it can offer more facilities to visitors as each year goes by.” For further information about Oakhill Nature Reserve and events happening at the site, visit the website, www.oakhillnature.org

Walk your way to health in 2 The benefits of walking are well known and aren’t just physical. Exercising as well as getting fresh air are both known for improving your mental health East Riding Council has been running the Walking for Health scheme in Goole since 2003 as a joint venture between the countryside access team and sports development team. Dozens of organised walks take place across the Goole and wider East Riding area throughout the year, suitable for all abilities. Laura Hutchinson of the East Riding Walking for Health team, said: “Walking is almost perfect exercise, requiring no expense. Almost anyone can do it, it can be done anywhere at any time and it is the best way for people from all walks of life to become more active gradually. All you need is a good pair of shoes that are comfortable, provide

good support and don’t cause blisters. Loose-fitting clothing allows you to move more freely. Remember to wear thin layers rather than heavy clothing and take a bottle of water with you.” Walks take place at West Park in Goole every other Wednesday. It is a free half-an-hour leisurely walk and suitable for all ages and abilities. Walkers meet at 10.30am outside the cafe for a 10.45am start. Longer walks of 60 minutes also take place on the second Thursday of the month from Goole Leisure Centre and from a different starting point on the fourth Thursday of the month. For more information, contact Laura Hutchinson on 01482 392527.

Joy in bundles When Claire Raper founded Bundles of Joy, she was not expecting her small idea to turn into a fully fledged charity supporting hundreds of families in the area

Bundles of Joy helps families affected by illness, crisis, poverty and those who have fled domestic abuse and, in 2017, it helped over 160 families in the East Riding area.

and clothing for older children are distributed to help struggling families manage their limited budgets better. Now Bundles of Joy has also become a haven for accessing emergency supplies when needed.

Claire said: “We distribute essential and useful baby and children’s equipment to people who need it. Having a new baby can be an expensive time, which doesn’t subside as they grow from baby, to toddler, to child. We recognise that, for too many families, the expense of providing for a baby becomes too much to bear, and that compromises are made either on the quality of the baby items themselves, or funds are diverted from other parts of the family budget leaving families vulnerable to debt.”

Claire added: “As a community we are all pulling together to help make a difference. This last year has been an amazing one with 2018 looking the same already. We have just been selected as Hymers College Charity of 2018 which is wonderful news and we look forward to working with them too. I couldn’t do it without the amazing help of volunteer Clare Johnson and my trustees. As a team we are really getting the best out of what we can offer. We don’t do it for a wage, we do it through dedication, care and the desire to help make a difference.”

The specialist baby charity helps bridge the gap between those who have items to donate and the families who would welcome them with each bundle tailored to each specific family. Baby clothing, toys, blankets, prams and moses baskets as well as toys

This month, Business Support Specialist Heidi Green tells us about the rewards of self-employment

Learn from others It may be that 2018 is the year you achieve your dream of self-employment. Starting your own business is exciting, giving you the freedom to work hard on things you’re most passionate about. A brave but rewarding decision, make sure you examine all aspects of starting up and ensure you give yourself the best

24

chance possible of business survival. Speak to other business owners, ones who are willing to share the ups and downs of their journey, saving you from making some of the same mistakes they’ve made. One of the first things you should do is understand the market you’re going into. Do your market research. This should include your customers, your competitors and your suppliers. What exactly are your prospective customers looking for? How does the current competition serve those needs? How much can you charge and how much will it cost you to supply the service or product?

Issue 024-January 2018

Then start looking at the finances. How will you fund the business start-up and cover the gap between starting and making a profit? Think about the cost of marketing, overheads, insurance, travel. Remember, cash flow in business can be make or break. Business planning is essential no matter how convinced you are that it can’t fail. Writing the plan helps you to identify exactly what you’re going to do, how you’re going to do it and when you expect benchmarks to happen. Finally, once you’re up and running, make sure you manage people well. That’s not just staff, if you employ them, but in terms of customer service too. It’s a skill in its own right and really can be the difference between success and failure. For further help and advice on business growth and funding opportunities, contact Heidi Green, Senior Business Advisor for Selby District Council via email at hgreen@selby.gov. uk or call 01757 292332.

LAURA KIDDY PARALEGAL AT HEPTONSTALLS

Legal focus: Unmarried couples and wills According to a recent survey conducted by the Office for National Statistics, there are more than three million cohabiting couple families in the UK, accounting for 16.4 per cent of all families in the UK. This demographic has increased by almost 30 per cent in a decade and is the fastest growing type of family in the UK. With a little over 40 per cent of adults in the UK having a will, many people are unaware that surviving partners are at serious risk of not receiving anything if their partner dies. If a couple is not married and one dies, the surviving partner will not receive any part of an estate unless assets are held in joint names. One of the more commonly seen examples is in relation to the family home. Many people would expect that the home would be passed to them upon the death of their partner but sadly this is not necessarily the case. The estate is usually passed to the deceased’s children in this instance and, if the couple have no children, it can be passed to parents, siblings and extended family members, even those who you may not necessarily wish to receive any part of the estate. Making a will is the only way of ensuring a partner receives part or even all of the assets. A will is a lot easier to prepare than many people would imagine and ensures that your final wishes are upheld.

To make a will or for further information about how Heptonstalls could help you, please call us on 0800 917 8267. 25

The site services and security sector is estimated to be worth £121.8 billion a year to the UK economy, whilst the private security industry is worth over £9 billion and employs over 356,000 people

Busting myths about the security industry

Both sectors have a good track record of helping people move into work by providing opportunities for many entry-level roles, through apprenticeships amongst others. They also offer exciting career opportunities to ensure that people who move in to the industry stay there To work in security you will need a Security Industry Authority (SIA) licence and specific training is required before you can obtain this licence. Some employers will pay for licence training but many people self-fund at a cost of approximately £220. HERE ARE FIVE MYTHBUSTING FACTS ABOUT WORKING IN SECURITY… Wages are really poor The security industry recognises the adverse impact low wages has on attracting good staff. Starting salaries are often above the minimum wage usually starting between £13,000 and £16,000 and rising to £22,000 for an experienced guard. Opportunities exist to progress into management which offers 26

higher wages and greater job satisfaction. Many senior managers and even some CEOs started as security guards, illustrating how the industry can offer a career path. Only men do that The traditional men-only attitude is changing. More than 11% of roles in security are now held by women. The industry will recruit from all backgrounds, sex, race and religion. The industry’s role is evolving and it needs to reflect the society it serves. Hours are too long Whilst there may be a requirement to work up to 48 hours in some roles, many employers offer a variety of hours and shift patterns.

It’s a dangerous job Most security staff never have to deal with very dangerous situations and those who do are well trained. Modern technology helps to protect security workers making their jobs safer as help is always at hand. Security staff are all ex-cons All security companies operating in the private security industry must employ Security Industry Authority licensed staff who must undergo mandatory training to prove their identity and pass a criminal record check. The industry is respected and security workers can be proud of their status. If you are interested in finding out further information, please visit www.sia.homeoffice.gov.uk

This month property expert David Leake, of Housesetc reports Property expertofDavid Leake of Housesetc, discusses the on the drop-off enquiries as predicted earlier in the year Right-To-Buy scheme and the impact on social housing stock...

Bank of mum and dad When Margaret Thatcher launched the Right-To-Buy scheme in 1980, it was meant to result in a ‘property-owning democracy’, but it didn’t quite turn out like that.

Recent research predicts that the size of deposits required for property purchase could rise considerably across the country and first-time buyers could be forgiven for giving up hope on owning their first home. Research reports that parents lent around £6.5bn to their children in 2017, making the Bank of Mum and Dad the equivalent of the UK’s ninth largest mortgage lender!

Local authorities have reported that around 40 per cent of the social housing stock sold is now owned by private landlords and rented out, leaving the government to subsidise the everincreasing private rents.

first-time buyers in the UK pay a deposit of up to 20 per cent of the purchase price. Equity Release - The two main equity release options include: • Lifetime mortgage – a popular option, parents don’t have to make any repayments while they’re alive. Interest is simply added to the loan, which is repaid when the home is eventually sold. • Home reversion – a less popular option that enables parents to sell part or all of their home to a reversion provider and receive 20 - 60 per cent of its value. Gifting money for a house deposit 21 per cent of parents provide an interest-free loan and 2 per cent (Yorkshire men) offer it as a loan with interest, whilst 56 per cent of parents choose to gift money. Whether you are a cycling enthusiast or not, it’s hard not to get excited about the Tour De Yorkshire, especially when this year, it will be passing our doorstep! Last year 9.7 million viewers in 180 different countries tuned in to the Tour De Yorkshire and the event generated £64 million for the Yorkshire economy. This year, businesses close to home will also benefit from the economic boost the race brings when it passes through the area during stage one of the tour. Day one of the race will take place on Thursday, May 3rd and see the cyclists covering 182km of ground with the starting point being in Beverley. 34

They will then proceed to the seaside resort of Hornsea and the peloton will then tackle a 16km loop before heading back through Beverley and into the Yorkshire Wolds. The first classified climb at Baggaby Hill will get the legs pumping before a brisk descent into Pocklington for the opening intermediate sprint. After passing through Holme-on-Spalding Moor the pace will gradually ramp up again for a second sprint in Howden, then Airmyn, on to Rawcliffe and then it’s full steam into Doncaster on the

Tour De Yorkshire is coming to town! newly opened Great Yorkshire Way. The riders will sweep past the world-famous racecourse before a flat-out finish along South Parade. No doubt, thousands of people will line the streets along the way to cheer the cyclists on, meaning it could be one of the busiest days Goole and Howden has ever seen. Mel Walker, a founder and member of the Goole Roadies Cycling Club (GRCC), told us: “The Tour De Yorkshire increases visibility of cycling in general and the benefits, which not only include health and fitness but social ones too. The Tour is an exciting event with lots of sponsors and hype, which elevates people’s views of cycling. “At Goole Roadies Cycling Club we welcome all ages

and abilities. As one of a number of women that ride within the group I can say that joining has allowed me to meet like-minded people. There’s something for everyone - it’s not all just middleaged men in lycra!” Scott Caughey, another founder and member of GRCC, added: “A bloke that owns a bike shop in France, who has a pro cyclist friend, told him that after the Tour De France, the Tour De Yorkshire was the best race he’d ridden due to the fans. Because of these fans, the people of Yorkshire, the Tour De Yorkshire has arguably become a bigger race than the Tour of Britain.” To find out more about GRCC and how you can get involved, visit www.britishcycling.org.uk or find them on Facebook. 35
