Our Goole Chris Toy Appeal 20

Over 600 gifts collected and distribu families in need for Christm In December 2017, we launched our first ever toy appeal and couldn’t believe how much the community helped us in gifting those in need. Well, this year we received even more gifts and are overwhelmed by the support from all of you! Literally hundreds of presents were collected by a number of fantastic local businesses and individuals. These gifts were then given out to local families so that children and parents had something to open on Christmas morning. Page 6

Jo Evans, from Hull & Easy Yorkshire Credit Union, told Our Goole: “This year once again our community has rallied round to help even more families have an amazing Christmas. It’s very humbling to see the kindness and generosity of the people not only in Goole, but as far as Barlow and Whitgift. We are proud to be part of this very deserving cause and I know those children receiving gifts this year are going to be so excited to see their lovely presents.” Lisa Warrener, director of Our Goole, said: “We

uted to local mas were absolutely blown away by the amount of presents we received for the appeal. We knew how generous the people of Goole were from last year’s, but we cannot thank the community enough for going above and beyond. The fantastic Goole spirit has meant that so many families will have received presents on Christmas morning, ones who otherwise might not have received anything. The people of Goole are well known for pulling together to help others in need and this toy appeal has just proved again how true this is.

“We’d like to say a massive thank you to everyone who donated and all the local businesses that collected presents for the appeal. A special thank you to Specsavers and Morrisons on Boothberry Road and Hull & East Yorkshire Credit Union who have all made this appeal extra special by giving a helping hand.” So once again, a huge thank you to the people of Goole and surrounding areas, we really do have a brilliant community!

FROM A POLICE Be vigilant when going out This month, Sgt David Lonsdale talks to us about taking some simple steps to help protect yourself and your belongings

“Get into the habit of checking that your bag is fully fastened up after you have opened it.

Page 10

Issue 036-January 2019

E PERSPECTIVE: Don’t give opportunist thieves the chance to bag your belongings. It doesn’t matter if you are out shopping or going out for a social event, make sure you stay alert at all times. DON’T LEAVE YOUR HANDBAG UNATTENDED in shopping baskets, trolleys, pushchairs or mobility scooters. In cafes and restaurants keep your bags on your lap, between your feet or place the strap around a chair leg. (Don’t hang your bag on the back of your chair where you can’t keep an eye on it.) KEEP YOUR HANDBAG CLOSE TO YOU and closed at all times. Choose a bag that can be zipped up or closed and get into the habit of checking that it’s fully fastened up after each time you have opened it. Ideally your purse and phone should be well hidden and tucked away out of sight and out of easy reach of pickpockets. Be particularly careful on public transport, keep your bag where you can see it. If you carry a rucksack, wear it on your front rather than on your back or over your shoulder. DON’T LEAVE YOUR MOBILE PHONE ON THE TABLE. Mobile phones are frequently targeted by thieves and can easily be swiped when your back is turned even just for a minute. KEEP THE AMOUNT OF VALUABLES INSIDE HANDBAGS TO AN ABSOLUTE MINIMUM and try not to carry large amounts of cash around with you. BE MINDFUL OF DISTRACTIONS. Thieves working in pairs may try to divert your attention in order to steal your handbag or pickpocket your purse or phone. Avoid carrying too much around with you, the more bags you’ve got the more vulnerable you are. If you need to take shopping back to your car, put your bags in the car boot – don’t leave them where they can be seen.

Double victory for Housesetc

Goole’s Housesetc has recently won two prestigious awards recognising its services to the housing industry The first award was the Best Estate Agent Guide’s ‘The Property Academy Best Estate Agent Directory’ where they were the only local estate agent to obtain an ‘exceptional’ rating for sales. The ‘exceptional’ rating is only given to the top 5% of estate agency branches in the country. These branches show an outstanding level of service and care towards prospective clients. You cannot apply for or buy a listing in the Best Estate Agent Guide. The second award sees Housesetc hand-picked as one of the ‘Top Three Estate Agents in the East Riding’ by Three Best Rated. The results Page 14

are based on a 50-point inspection taking into consideration local reviews, history, trading standards, ratings, satisfaction, trust, price and general excellence. David Leake, who is a regular property columnist for Our Goole, is delighted that the team has been recognised for all the hard work it does. David told Our Goole: “These awards are a tremendous boost for our company, and confirms that property owners who choose to sell through Housesetc are receiving an exceptionally high level of customer-focused service.” To read David’s property column, head over to page 22.

POWERING GOOLE PORT WITH SOLAR

ABP has invested over £1 million on a rooftop solar project at the Port of Goole generating enough clean energy to power the port on solar alone during peak generation times The major project will see 4,341 solar panels installed on four rooftops across the UK’s most inland port, Goole, which handles over one million tonnes of cargo annually. It will produce enough electricity (1.1 megawatts) to power around 154 residential homes per year. Britain’s biggest ports operator, ABP, is on track to become one of the largest corporate solar producers in the UK, and recently the Port of Immingham has upped its solar production to over four megawatts and was recognised for its green efforts at the Solar Power Portal Awards winning Commercial Roof Top Solar Project of The Year 2018. Goole and Hull Port Manager, Chris Green, said: “We’re proud that the UK’s most inland port, Goole, will be a significant renewable energy generator in its own right. “We still have enormous potential to further Page 16

develop our ports to generate yet more clean energy, reducing the carbon footprint of our businesses and of our customers’ operations.” The project will reduce CO2 by over 450,000 kilograms each year – that’s an equivalent of planting over 20,000 trees. The first installation took place at RMS Boothferry Terminal in preparation for the sunny summer months. The UK’s leading commercial solar installer, Custom Solar led the 12-week programme. Custom Solar Director, Gary Sucharewycz, said: “It’s fantastic to be working on another project with ABP Humber. “Following the recent success of projects at the Port of Immingham and other ports across the wider ABP group, this recent installation at the Port of Goole is another positive step as ABP implements solar generation across all ports.”

This month, Business Support Specialist Heidi Green tells us that the way you communicate with your staff will determine the success of your business

you don’t need to be aggressive when you’re being assertive Assertiveness means knowing what you want and how you feel and react about things. It also means you listen to others and understand their viewpoints to help your understanding. Assertiveness is not forcing your ideas on someone else, getting your own way, manipulation or even being aggressive.

What you want is a favourable outcome for yourself and others, giving a clear understanding of what is needed from each individual to achieve a positive outcome. To do this, you need to be able to communicate in an assertive tone. This will help build respect and get things done. Your expectations and what you need to complete projects. In turn this leaves you less stressed, more confident and therefore more successful. By helping everyone to work this way, you will develop a team that is not only productive but respectful of each other. This in turn leads to better efficiency, staff wellbeing and, of course, better profitability. ANGELE HART

HEAD OF PERSONAL INJURY

Accidents in the workplace and employees’ rights Your employer has a duty of care towards you and is required to take steps to ensure your working environment is safe, thereby minimising the risk of an accident. If your employer is negligent, failing to comply with Health and Safety Legislation and you have an accident resulting in injury, then you may have grounds to make a claim for compensation. Many people worry about the implications of making a claim against their employer, as they feel they may be subject to the repercussions of such an action. If you have been with your employer for more than two years and they were to discipline or dismiss you for making a legitimate claim, there may be grounds for unfair dismissal. Some people are also reluctant to claim compensation after an accident at work because they may be worried about the financial impact their claim could have on their employer. All employers are required by law to take out employer’s liability insurance. So, if a claim is successful, the compensation is paid out by the insurance company, not the employer. If you have suffered an accident at work in the last three years that wasn’t your fault and would like some further advice, call Heptonstalls on 0800 917 8267 or visit www.heptonstalls.co.uk

PROTECT YOUR PROPERTY FROM SEVERE WEATHER According to climate experts, Britain is facing the most savage winter freeze for over a decade.

and save the drama of frozen pipes or the inconvenience of a boiler breakdown should the worst winter weather strike.

Each year, thousands of homeowners across the country are caught out by a sudden cold snap. Winter weather, which brings freezing temperatures, can lead to burst pipes and damaged roofs and gutters.

1. Make sure your loft is well-insulated

In fact, in the freezing winter of 2011, insurers dealt with 3,500 claims a day for damage caused by frozen pipes.

Property expert Phil Jones from Link Agency tells us everything we need to know about deposits

GETTING YOUR DEPOSIT BACK! In 2007 a legislation came in which determined that any tenancy deposit that is taken by a landlord or their agent must be registered with a protection service. At the end of the tenancy, the landlord may request money from the deposit, if they can prove that it should be paid to them and not returned to the tenant. The landlord must prove this, not the tenant. For this to happen the landlord will require photographs taken at the beginning of the tenancy.

At the start of the tenancy, the tenant will be issued with a certificate which shows how much the deposit is, where it is held along with your deposit ID. At the end of the tenancy, if you’ve lost the certificate don’t worry, just ring the landlord and ask where the deposit is held. You can then ring the chosen protection service and they will tell you everything you need to know.

Jobcentreplus is working with Unseen, an award-winning organisation working towards a world without any kind of slavery by supporting, equipping and influencing.

HIGHLIGHTING MODERN SLAVERY Modern slavery is real. It is happening in our communities. An unseen crime, it hides in takeaways, hotels, car washes, nail bars and private homes. The Home Office predicts that there may be as many as 13,000 victims in the UK alone. There is no typical victims of slavery. They can be men, women and children of all ages and cut across the population, but it is normally more prevalent amongst the most vulnerable, minority or socially excluded groups. In 2017, the UK Modern Slavery Helpline indicated that 2,288 potential victims of modern slavery cases were men, while 1,547 were women. By supporting survivors and vulnerable people through specialist services, Unseen Page 30

can enable them to recover safely and develop resilient, independent lives.

can call 08000 121 700 any time night or day for advice, guidance or support.

By equipping stakeholders with training, advice and resources, Unseen can better identify and support actual and potential victims of slavery.

As a victim-centred organisation, Unseen, through the helpline works with callers and potential victims at their pace to help them consider their options and make informed decisions. Callers do not need to give their details if they do not want to and support can be tailored to the person’s circumstances and location.

By influencing society through systemic change, Unseen can use its practical experience, research and survivor stories to inspire change in legislation, policy, and consumer choices. The UK’s 24/7 Modern Slavery Helpline is also an excellent means of accessing confidential and independent information and advice from specialists trained in all aspects of modern slavery. Potential victims, statutory agencies, frontline professionals, businesses and members of the public

If you believe a person is being trafficked or exploited and is in immediate danger, you should call 999 straight away. Visit www. modernslaveryhelpline.org Call Unseen on 08000 121 700 to get help, report a suspicion or seek advice.

LOCAL GIRL REPRESENTS THE COUNTY IN TENNIS COMPETITION Erin Thomas, 12, has just represented Yorkshire for the under 12s in the Twelve Counties Cup in Corby. The team of four played Leicestershire and Cambridgeshire before meeting Essex in the final, and Yorkshire won!

Erin told Our Goole: “I’m extremely proud to have been chosen to represent my county at tennis and cricket this year. I spend almost all of my spare time training, so it’s good to see that my hard work is paying off.” Erin, who is a pupil at The Snaith School, has always loved sport and competing. She has played tennis at Goole Tennis Centre since the age of 6 and is also a member of Drax Cricket Club. Since then Erin has competed in a number of competitions around Yorkshire. This summer she was selected to play for the U13 Yorkshire Girls Page 34

Cricket team after being invited to a Yorkshire County Cricket Club Super 2s talent ID event in July. Erin also won the ‘Sportswoman of the year’ award for Year 7 at the end of the last school year. Steve Turnbull, Erin’s tennis coach, adds: “Erin has shown huge determination and passion for tennis. She certainly deserves the recognition as she has trained so well over the years at Goole Tennis Centre.” Many congratulations to Erin and the Yorkshire team, keep up the hard work!
