turns four! Community Centre, Helping Others (Mental Health), not to mention all the local businesses and fundraisers promoted in the magazine. Lisa added: “The highlights for me would have to be the Our Goole Family Fun Day which we launched back in September last year. It was great to organise something that all the community could get involved in as well as raise money for local charities. “Also to win ‘Contribution to the Community (Business)’ at the Goole & Howdenshire Business Excellence Awards 2019 just proved that all the hard work is worth it and we are creating something special.” Rachel Liddle, distribution manager, who has worked for the company for the last two-and-a-half years, told us: ‘I’m
responsible for making sure the distribution of the magazine runs smoothly and I love it! It’s great to deliver something special through people’s post boxes every month and with a great team behind me, all those thousands of steps we walk is worth it.’ And it seems to only way for Our Goole is up, as we have been shortlisted for not one, but two, awards at this year’s Goole & Howdenshire Business Excellence Awards. The event takes place on Friday 21st February, keep checking our social media for updates. A huge thank you to all the businesses who advertise in the magazine and the community for providing us with such feel-good stories, without you none of this would be possible.

FROM A POLICE
Old Goole fir This month Sgt David Lonsdale gives us the latest update on a fire that occurred in Old Goole and talks to us about the risks that fire causes in the community
“While investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing, there are indications that the fire was started deliberately, and therefore amounts to the offence of arson.

E PERSPECTIVE:
re: an update Back in early December, Old Goole was subject to a fierce fire that took the fire service all night to get under control and caused severe disruptions to traffic on Swinefleet Road.
Several police officers spent the night at the scene making sure the blaze was under control and residents were not in any danger. While investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing, there are indications that the fire was started deliberately, and therefore amounts to the offence of arson. Some of the suspects named are youths of school age, which is a cause of serious concern to the police and should also be of concern to members of the public. We are used to youths causing anti-social behaviour, annoyance and other minor transgressions in and around the town centre, which while unacceptable can hardly be described as dangerous. But the risks that fire causes to the community are well known. They include damage to property and even death. In the case of the fire
mentioned above, while there was no death, the damage to the building in question was severe. If it was not for the excellent efforts of the fire service officers, the fire could have easily spread to other buildings and caused even more damage. The police will do everything possible to bring the culprits to book and prosecute them for the crime, however, we encourage parents and other members of the community to educate and advise young people about the serious risk that fires cause. The fire service can provide free fire prevention education and helpful information to individuals, families and groups who think they need it. There has not been a prevalence of arson in the Goole area, so we do not want to cause any panic or alarm. We would like to urge members of the public to give us information about anyone they suspect to have the habit of starting fires in places where it might be dangerous to do so, and to report those they know intend to commit arson.

Our Goole Chris Toy Appeal 20
Over 700 gifts collected and distribu families in need for Christm Since we launched the Our Goole Christmas Toy Appeal in 2017, we can’t believe how much the community has helped us in gifting those in need. This year has been no exception as literally hundreds of presents were collected by a number of fantastic businesses and individuals. These gifts were then given out to local families so that children and parents had something to open on Christmas morning. Page 12
Jo Evans, from Hull & East Yorkshire Credit Union, told Our Goole: “This year’s toy appeal has been a real success and I couldn’t be prouder of the community of Goole for all their donations. Both the response to the donations and the gratitude from those receiving gifts has been overwhelming. Lots of tears have been shed and we can all sleep well knowing we have all helped to put a smile on many children’s faces in Goole. From the bottom of my heart, thank you all!” Lisa Warrener, director of Our Goole, said:

uted to local mas “Once again we are absolutely blown away by the amount of presents we received for the appeal. We know how generous the people of Goole are from the previous years, but we cannot thank the community enough for going above and beyond this year. The fantastic Goole spirit has meant that so many families will have received presents on Christmas morning, ones who otherwise may not have woken up to anything. Locals are well-known for pulling together to help others in need and this year’s has just proved again how true this is.
“We’d like to say a massive thank you to everyone who donated and all the local businesses that collected presents for the appeal. A special thank you to Specsavers, Morrisons, Tesco and Hull & East Yorkshire Credit Union who have all made this appeal extra special by giving a helping hand.” So once again, a huge thank you to the people of Goole and surrounding areas, we really do have a brilliant community!

...thanks to Slimming World. It’s that time of the year again. The dreaded January where we all try to get back into a routine and put down all that leftover cheese and stop drinking all that wine in the booze cupboard Joining a weight-loss group can be a great way to encourage yourself to shed a few pounds, just like Claire did.
then made the mistake of thinking I could do it without the group so ended up putting it all back on and more over the years.
Claire Hall started her Slimming World journey in January 2017. Our Goole chatted to Claire to find out more. “After my wedding and honeymoon in September 2016, I’d put a bit of weight on and my clothes were getting tight. I hated what I saw in the mirror, so decided to join the Wednesday Slimming World group in Goole.
“I had really let my weight slip after my wedding and my clothes were beginning to feel tight. I didn’t want to buy the next size up so decided to re-join and stick with it this time and not to give up.
“I’d been a member before and lost weight but
This time I was going to stick with the plan and stay to group, regardless of whether I’d had a bad week or not, as I desperately wanted to get to my target weight.

nsformation... “Summer holidays were always very challenging for me, but I always tried my very best and even if I put weight on during the holiday, I would get it back off as soon as we returned home and I was back in my routine again.
“Since losing weight I am more active through going to the gym and running. I can do more with my children too and don’t get out of breath. I can now see the dramatic changes in me and my body and I’m much happier, healthier and fitter than I’ve been for years, plus the whole family eat tasty and healthy food now. “You’re never hungry when you’re on the plan, so you snack less. We always have a curry on a Friday night for a fakeaway meal. This includes the Slimming World curries out of the fakeaway
book or sometimes an Iceland Slimming World meal. “I’m not far away from my target now and am positive I’ll get there. The group I go to is so supportive, a real friendly bunch and we all help each other as we are all aiming for the same thing… to get to our dream weight. I’d definitely recommend joining Slimming World, to lose weight, drop a dress size, learn how to cook and eat healthily and be able to do things you never dreamed of.” Claire has lost almost four stone since joining back in January 2017. This month, Business Support Specialist Heidi Green talks to us about the benefits of adapting your business to help the climate
Why we need to think about climate change Here are ideas for you to consider from within your business and your home life. 1. Flexible working – ensuring not all staff are in at the same time, this can reduce your energy consumption and the number of fumes pumped into the atmosphere. 2. Use technology – Skype and videoconferencing instead of travelling. 3. Lighting – when it’s time to replace light bulbs use energy-efficient LED lights. 4. Timers – put lights on a timing/motion mechanism.
Page 22
5. Recycling – reuse as much as possible. 6. Cleaning – use environmentally friendly products. 7. Vehicles – if you are about to change your vehicle consider electric or a hybrid vehicle. 8. Buildings – ensure they are well insulated. If you are serious about helping the environment watch out for the Selby District Business Conference on the 19th March 2020. For further help contact Heidi Green, Senior Business Advisor for Selby District Council via email at hgreen@selby.gov.uk.

Property expert David Leake of Housesetc reminds first time buyers of the basic checks they should carry out
What should first-time buyers consider? Here are the five key things that every firsttime buyer should consider as they attempt to get on the property ladder: 1) Potential?
4) The right home
Generally, property is a medium to long-term
Ensure you are buying the right home by prioritising the elements you can’t live without, nice-to-have aspects and the things you are willing to compromise on.
commitment, therefore it is important to look for a property that can grow with your expected changing needs. 2) Checking The property should be thoroughly inspected to ensure that there are no hidden defects that could be costly to repair.
Page 24
3) Everything has a lifespan Researching the expected remaining life on large-ticket items, such as boilers and ovens, can help you plan for the future.
5) Costs There are many recurring monthly costs involved in owning and maintaining a home. It is so important to choose a property that does not exceed your budget.

This month’s column, courtesy of the Jobcentre, focuses on Modern Slavery, how to spot the signs and what you should do if you or someone you know is affected by it
Modern Slavery
Could you spot the signs? • Have you been approached by strangers offering food, alcohol, drugs or shelter? • Have you been offered work that sounds too good to be true? • Are you working for, or have you been offered work, for little or no wages? • Has someone taken your personal belongings or documents? • Are you being forced to engage in criminal or sexual activity? • Have you noticed people suddenly disappearing from the streets? If the answer is yes to any of these questions, you could be at risk of exploitation. Exploiters often try to recruit people at day centres, night shelters and at soup kitchens. They promise cash in hand work, alcohol, drugs, and accommodation which usually turn out to be false. Different methods will then be used to prevent someone from escaping or reporting to the police. You are at a higher risk if you are offered work in hand car washes, agriculture work, factory work or construction. If you are being forced to engage in criminal or sexual activity, this is also exploitation. Page 30
Think you might be being exploited?
who does not want to talk to support workers/volunteers.
• Speak to a support worker or someone from a registered homeless charity.
• Strangers seen talking to people outside shelters and then showing them to a vehicle.
• Call the police on 101 or anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
• Someone offering you work or other things, but then arranges an alternative meeting place to pick you up, which is away from your current location.
• Report your concerns to the Modern Slavery Helpline on 08000 121 700. • Always call 999 if you are in immediate danger. How to spot an exploiter: • Someone you always see hanging around outside day shelters with a van or large car. • Someone you have not seen on the streets before and
Suspect an exploiter? • NEVER approach or engage with them. • Write down any number plates and a description of what they look like. • Speak to a support worker or someone from a recognised/ registered homeless charity.
