The communit visitor pod for l Since the coronavirus pandemic hit the UK, many care home residents have been unable to see their loved ones. However, due to brilliant community spirit, residents of Old School House Residential Care Home were able to reunite with their families during the Christmas period The Old School House Residential Care Home, set in the heart of of Gilberdyke, provides outstanding accommodation and care for its residents – offering residential care, respite care, short breaks and also day care.

was able to build the visitor pod. It is fitted outwith a perplex screen to separate the residents from their visitors to ensure the home remains Covid-19 free and secure.

The care home’s brand-new visitor pod was made possible by the hard work of Nick Doyle and Dale Waddington who made an appeal online reaching out to vulnerable people who were in need of help. Nick is a joiner who owns NDJ Joinery Limited and his team

Nick Doyle told Our Goole: “I put out a status on Facebook last month offering my company out free of charge to any local and vulnerable people for Christmas. I helped an 82-year-old man and another elderly lady with some flooring issues they had free of charge.

Our Goole had a chat with those involved to find out more about the project.

ty helps create local care home Then Emma got in touch and asked if I’d be interested in building the booth. I jumped at the chance really because I want to make a positive difference to people. I think it’s important to be kind and help who you can. Especially in these trying times. “I did two local DIY SOS projects (Hessle & Scunthorpe) in 2018 and 2019, and I’d love to get that sort of community spirit going round us. God knows the world could do with it right now, a few positives.” Dale Waddington added: “Me and Nick get along really well and I heard what Nick was doing on the school house. I rang him asking if he’d like a hand doing it. I thought it would be an honour to help the people out at the Old School House especially so close to Christmas. It might be some of the residents’ last Christmas so it was a feeling for them to see their family.”

Emma Clark, the activities co-ordinator for the home, is currently on maternity leave, however, after seeing Nick’s Facebook post. She got in touch to ask for help. Emma told Our Goole: “Being able to have a visiting pod in the home meant a lot to me. I just wanted to be able to help everyone in some sort of way. I spoke to my deputy manager Tracey Jackson and asked if I could contact Nick and ask the community for help, of course she was behind me 100%. I really was overwhelmed with the response I got. The difference it’s already made is unbelievable, we just really want to thank Nick and Dale for their amazing work.” A huge congratulations to the Old School House and well done to Nick and his team for all their hard work!

FROM A POLICE Humberside police tackle anti-social behaviour

‘In Goole, we have regular street surgeries which have proved very popular, and our officers are working closely with the council’s antisocial behaviour team to tackle problems with teenagers causing a nuisance in the park on St George’s Green.’

Page 10

Issue 058-January 2021

E PERSPECTIVE: This month, Humberside Police talk to us about how communities across Britain have seen an increase in reports of antisocial behaviour – including here in the Humberside force area As the first lockdown restrictions were lifted and more of us headed back out, many areas saw a rise in the number of calls about antisocial behaviour - covering everything from begging in our town centres to breaches of Covid restrictions or nuisance quad and motorbikes. But whatever the issue may be in your area, our teams are out there working with you and our local authorities to deal with them. Chief Inspector Craig Nicholson said: “I’m happy to say that we have seen the number of calls in relation to antisocial behaviour steadily falling. “That said, we know the impact that this kind of behaviour can have on communities and when we do have issues, it’s our priority to deal with them. “What that looks like varies greatly depending on where you are in the force.

“In Goole we have regular street surgeries which have proved very popular and our officers are working closely with the council’s antisocial behaviour team to tackle problems with teenagers causing a nuisance in the park on St George’s Green. “To give you an example of how effective we can be when we work together as a community, you need look no further than Bridlington. “The team have had some fantastic results lately tackling drug-related crime and antisocial behaviour – and the information we have had from the community has played a big part in that. “My plea to you is please keep talking to us. Come and have a word with your local team when you see them out on the beat, give us a call on 101 or message us via Facebook or Twitter.

“It’s been great to see many of you taking advantage of this and talking to us about what’s going on near you.

“You can also speak directly to Jon Powell (Goole, Howden, Pocklington, Wolds Weighton) and his team online at their regular community Zoom meetings.

“The information you share with us is vital in helping us plan and prioritise where we need to be and what action we need to take.

“We are here to help and by working together we can make sure that East Yorkshire remains the jewel in our area’s crown.”

Can you believe we are celebrating our fifth birthday? No, we can’t either! It only feels like yesterday when it all began, but Our Goole turns five this month and we are super excited to be celebrating this landmark moment. So much has happened in those five years, we have achieved lots and will continue to take pride in helping the community the best we can. Whether that is promoting businesses or finding feel-good stories, we help shine a light on all the fantastic people and charities we have here in Goole. We chatted to director, Lisa Warrener, to find out more about running Our Goole and what her proudest moments are. “It is a huge achievement to be celebrating our fifth

Page 14

birthday. Last year was an extremely difficult year for so many of us and as a small business we faced many challenges and struggles. However, we pride ourselves on being able to help all those small businesses like us, so to still be here promoting the local businesses and acknowledging the fantastic community spirit Goole has is brilliant and that is all down to our readers and advertisers. “Over the past five years, Our Goole has become a household name in and around Goole. People come to us for so many things and we are the first port of call for so many people. We vow to do our very best to help each and every member of our community in whatever way we can.”

day, however, I hope we can organise another event in the future as we had so much fun.”

Our Goole has also sponsored local football teams, donated to many local charities such as The Green Team, The Moorlands Community Centre, Youth Space - Goole and many more.

Lisa went on to say: “To be recognised two years in a row at the award ceremony just proves that all the hard work is worth it and we are creating something special.”

Lisa added: “The highlights for me would be Our Goole Family Fun Day which we organised in September 2019. It was great to hold an event in the community, see so many of our readers attending as well as raising money for local charities. Again, the restrictions in place last year meant we were unable to hold another family fun

“The only way is up for Our Goole as we continue to provide an excellent service for our community. A huge thank you to all the businesses who advertise in the magazine and the community for providing us with such feel-good stories. Without you, none of this would be possible.

In the past five years, Our Goole has also won ‘Contribution to the Community (Business)’ at the Goole & Howdenshire Business Excellence Awards 2019 and was then a finalist for the same award and ‘Small Business of the Year’ in 2020.
