On road to recovery thanks to free heating system
A family from Goole are looking forward to a warmer winter in a comfortably heated home, thanks to emergency help from a Government scheme. Paul Longman, his wife Marleen and their son who’s also called Paul, live in a mid-terrace house in Goole which was heated by just two downstairs gas fires with no upstairs heating. During a double hospital stay for both Mr Longman and his son, who were suffering from serious health issues, occupational therapists became concerned about discharging them into such a cold home. A referral was made to the East Riding of Yorkshire Council (ERYC) who established the family was eligible for funding for a free full gas central heating system. Recognising that a warm home would aid rehabilitation, the application was processed promptly, enabling work to begin installing the new heating system while the pair were still in hospital. ERYC was recently awarded over £1million from the Government’s central heating fund, and working alongside energy company npower, has been installing heating systems to privately owned or privately rented households, free to those who are eligible.
Councillor Shaun Horton from ERYC told Our Goole: “According to Government figures, there are around 12,000 households in the East Riding deemed to be in fuel poverty which means residents have low incomes but high energy costs. “There will be a lot of people in similar situations to the Longmans with just two gas fires or storage heaters in their home who could benefit from this funding. “Schemes like the central heating fund bring much needed help for those most in need. Keeping warm is vital for health and the elderly, sick and the very young are most at risk from extreme conditions when houses cannot be heated.” Denise Rogers, npower business development manager added: “This central heating fund is a very important community scheme and we are proud to be working with ERYC. “You don’t have to be a customer of npower to receive our help and we are keen to ensure new heating systems are installed into homes that really need it.” For more information contact East Riding of Yorkshire Council on 01482 396180 or email energyefficiency@ eastriding.gov.uk 5

FROM A POLICE Goole’s police team say ‘on your bike’ to cycle thieves PC Graham Benson of Goole Humberside Policing Team speaks to Our Goole about the current policing priorities, crime trends and issues being addressed by your local Community Policing team
“One of the most common items subject to crime is the pedal cycle”
6
Issue 006 - July 2016
E PERSPECTIVE: “We all have a responsibility to protect our property, yet for many people simply glancing at a pamphlet handed out to them is as far as it goes. Noting, storing and recording descriptions and serial numbers of precious items gets put off to a date that never seems to arrive. “One of the most common items subject to crime is the pedal cycle. The cost of the everyday cycle equated in the 1950s to the equivalent of an entire week’s wage, and it remains the same to this day. In today’s modern world some serious cyclists obtain specialised bicycles which are worth thousands. “As the local policing group we are attempting to aid the public in how and where to correctly record the information, which will individually identify their cycle. Cycles are our main target, but we will also encourage the marking and recording of any property from individual jewellery to electrical DIY tools. “In order to access this advice we are advertising on our website when and where officers will be available to give advice on how and where to mark your property. Professional equipment will be available on site to mark your property up. “We will also be encouraging people to register their property online using the Immobilise site. Don’t worry if you are not IT literate, we can help guide you through this process. “Although the initial set up, recording and entering of your property’s details may seem time consuming and laborious, once done amendments take very little time. Once recorded your property is no longer attractive to the thief and if the worst were indeed to happen and you become the victim of theft, this information proves invaluable and may make all the difference, providing a greater chance of your precious property being recovered.”
Crimes in your area • Entry was gained into a secure wooden shed in the Goole Fields area and a strimmer was stolen.
• A lock was broken and entry gained into a secure shed in the Goole Fields area. • A parked car in Goole was damaged. • Two BMW cars had their locks damaged as a result of an attempted break in. • Tools were stolen from a secure Berlingo van parked on a driveway in Goole. • Several cars in one Goole street were damaged as a result of being scratched with a sharp object. • An unsecured child’s BMX bicycle was stolen from a front garden. • Locks were cut off a wheel and tow bar of a caravan which was then stolen from a yard in the Goole area. • Entry was gained into a property via an insecure door and a purse was stolen. • The roof of a Mazda MX5 was slashed. • A BMW car was damaged as its lock barrel was stolen but no entry was gained. • Entry was gained into a property via an insecure window and a laptop was stolen. • A secure van was broken into and tools taken. • A secure black Mongoose mountain bike was stolen from the bike rack outside Lidl in Goole. • An unsecured child’s bike was stolen. • A secure van was broken into and tools stolen. • A chunk of cement was thrown at a car parked on a driveway causing damage to the bonnet. • The rear window of a car parked on a street was smashed. • A wooden door on the perimeter fence at the allotment was damaged.

£200,000 overhaul for Goole’s last remaining boat hoist
The working hoist on the quayside on South Dock and how it looks today as it undergoes more than £200,000 worth of refurbishment works (Image courtesy of ABP)
The 100-year-old boat hoist standing guard over Goole’s South Dock is undergoing a £200,000 programme of refurbishment that will guarantee its future, thanks to ABP and Historic England. The Grade II structure was built in 1912 to transfer coal coming down the inland waterways into the holds of waiting ships ready for export, but it hasn’t been used since the closure of Yorkshire’s coal mines in the 1980s. Restoration works were last undertaken in 2006 and this latest programme of refurbishment saw a £135,000 investment by ABP, which was match-funded by Historic England. The entire project is expected to be complete by 2019. ABP Port Manager for Hull and Goole, Mark Frith said: “We have always been mindful of the importance of the hoist to the people of Goole and of our role as custodians of the structure. “We began discussions with Historic England in early 2015 and it was agreed that we would work together 10
to ensure the necessary maintenance and repairs were carried out to guarantee the building’s future for the port and for the people of Goole. “The hoist is a unique reminder of Goole’s industrial heritage and we’re delighted that its future is now secure.” Historic England provided a grant of £105,500 to carry out additional work to refurbish the Tipping Ram House. The works are due to be completed over the coming weeks at combined cost of £235,500. A spokesperson for Historic England said: “We are pleased to be able to make this grant to ABP, who are progressing well with their work to safeguard this unusual structure that brings the story of coal mining, canal and maritime heritage together.”

Goole parents picked to pilot ‘extra free childcare’ scheme There is great news for working parents in and around Goole who will find managing the cost of childcare a lot easier from next year when an additional 15 hours of free childcare will be rolled out for eligible families.
childcare places available. To help plan for this, the council is carrying out surveys with parents, carers, childcare providers and schools to help determine how many childcare places are currently available in the East Riding, and the potential demand for additional hours.
Goole and the rest of the East Riding has been chosen to pilot the new scheme, which will see extended free childcare entitlement for working parents of three and four-year-olds, providing eligible parents with a total of 30 hours of free childcare per week.
Councillor Julie Abraham told us: “The entitlement to extra hours of free childcare should make a major difference for many hardworking Goole families by helping them to manage the cost of childcare and support parents into work, or to work more hours if they wish to do so.”
It will be rolled out from September 2017 and is in addition to the existing 15 hours of free early education which is available to all three and four-year-olds. Chosen by the Department of Education to be an early innovator of the programme, East Riding of Yorkshire Council will be developing and trying out ideas ahead of the full rollout, including working with childcare providers and schools to help ensure there are enough

Nearly £1,600 was raised at the second annual Picnic in the Park on Sunday, June 5, which was organised by 31-year-old Jessica Sharp. Jessica became an ambassador for the Pulmonary Fibrosis Trust after losing her uncle Phillip Sharp to the condition back in 2014. Jessica told Our Goole: “Pulmonary fibrosis is a respiratory disease where scars are formed in the lung tissues, leading to serious breathing problems. “My uncle Phil was well known in Goole for his hard work supporting people with learning difficulties, and for his musical talents with Goole Amateur Dramatics
and Castaway. We held this year’s event on what would have been his 56th birthday. We feel Picnic in the Park is a great way to remember him, while raising vital funds for a great charity.” The Pulmonary Fibrosis Trust helps people living with PF by supplying oxygen, stair lifts, scooters, assistance with things such as travel insurance, and a dedicated helpline. Jessica is already looking ahead to next year’s Picnic in the Park, which will take place on Sunday, June 4. Visit the official Facebook page ‘Picnic in the Park Goole’ or email picnicintheparkgoole@outlook.com for more information or to get involved.

Help bring the beach to your doorstep
The organisers of Goole’s fun, FREE Beach Day are calling on the local community to help ensure we can once again dig out our buckets and spades by securing the final funding needed to make this year’s summer celebration happen Now in its sixth year, the event takes place annually on Saturday, August 6 and brings local people together in the town centre, showcasing dance, music, drama and sports. So far, organisers Business in Goole (BIG) have raised £3,600 of the funds needed to cover the costs of the popular event, but with a final £800 still left to source, a call has gone out to the community to help. Peter Sanderson, Chairman of BIG, told us: “Goole has
a real buzz and we want to celebrate that together in a festival atmosphere that is open to everyone. This final £800 will secure a sound technician team, PA system, and performance management. I hope the community of Goole will help contribute to the continuing success of Beach Day.” If you would like to help bring a little bit of the seaside to Goole and makes this year’s event the biggest and best yet, visit the crowdfunding page at www.crowdfunder.co.uk/goole-beach-day-2016

Podium finish for police dog Evo Humberside’s police dog Evo and handler PC Adrian Noble have claimed third place at the United Kingdom Police Dog Assessment event hosted by Police Service Northern Ireland (PSNI) in Belfast recently. PC Noble and PD Evo’s excellent performance was a result of hours of hard work in their own time, as well as many work-based training days and follows on from their superb win at the North East England Region event. Four-year-old PD Evo, a Malinois (Belgian Shepherd) weighing 28kg, competed against the top twenty dog teams from across the United Kingdom, performing very well in all assessment disciplines and was only just pipped to the top two positions by dogs and handlers from PSNI. PC Adrian Noble told Our Goole: “I am delighted with Evo and our performance. All the dogs involved showcased the value and expertise of the police dogs from across the UK. “The assessments, along with on-going training, ensures they are equipped to do the specialist policing required in order to keep the public safe, whether that is tracking an offender, supporting the policing of large events or searching for a missing person. Hopefully next year we can bring home the top prize.”

This month’s business column features guest columnist Susan Lewis, partner and Head of Litigation at Jordans Solicitors, which offers advice on ‘alternative dispute resolution’ for business owners
Mediation imposed on traders Business disputes are a major pitfall for any business owner - but when there is a dispute between a consumer and a trader, things can very quickly get tied up in legalities and red tape, which not only proves very costly but is a huge drain on your time and resources. Business owners can benefit from understanding arbitration and mediation options available for resolving the dispute without going to court. These options can often be quicker and cheaper, and lead to a more satisfactory solution than taking legal action, allowing you to get on with running your business. Alternative ways of resolving business disputes (ADR), other than just court action, have been around for a long
time, but have previously been a voluntary process. New law has been introduced to encourage the use of ADR upon businesses which sell goods or services to consumers. The Alternative Dispute Resolution for Consumer Disputes (Competent Authorities and Information) Regulations 2015 aims to promote the use of ADR. It only applies to your business if you sell to the public (consumers). What might these regulations mean to you? • If your business is a member of a Trade Association Body or there is a separate law which requires you, as a trader, to use ADR services, you have to advise your customers of that ADR provider. • Even if you are not a member of a Trade

Issue 006 - July 2016 Association Body or there is no law requiring you to use ADR services, you are required to consider whether you would voluntarily submit to ADR as a way of resolving a dispute with your customer. You are also required to advise consumers whether you would be prepared to use ADR and which body you have chosen to provide that service. You may wish to take the following steps: 1. Consider if your business is a member of a Trade Body or Association. Ask them whether the rules of your membership require you to use an ADR service. If they tell you that you are obliged to use their ADR service you must state this in your contract documents. You should also have a look at your complaints process to see if this information needs to be included. 2. If you are not in a Trade Body or Association you should still consider whether it is sensible to have ADR as an option. Generally speaking, it is always preferable to try and resolve disputes without court proceedings. 3. If you are not required by law or by your Trade Body or Association to use ADR services and you have chosen not to voluntarily submit your company to an ADR service, this needs to be stated in your contract documents. Students shine at Fashion Show Young people with a passion for fashion from Goole, Snaith and Howden have set the catwalk alight whilst claiming some of the night’s top awards as Selby College celebrated its annual fashion show at a brand new venue Former Goole High student Yashana Malhotra scooped the coveted ‘Excellence in Fashion’ award, while ex-Howden pupils Samantha Sully and Tina Holt along with former Snaith High student Leah Parker blew the audience away with their innovative collections. Fashion students across both years of the Level 3 Diploma and Extended Diploma Art & Design course descended upon Riccall Regen Centre to showcase their creative talents at the centre’s debut Fashion Show. The audience, including a host of special guests and civic dignitaries, friends and family, were treated to a visually stunning and perfectly polished display of this year’s creations, complete with live DJ set by current second year music students. Goole student Yashana Malhotra’s incredible collection entitled ‘Possessionem’ scooped her the award for ‘Excellence in Fashion’, sponsored by Mary Goldthorpe. Yashana’s skills and passion for creativity have helped her secure a place at a top class London University, 28
Central Saint Martins. Alongside Yashana’s winning collection there were a total of 21 collections from all second year students including Leah Parker’s ‘Finding Light in the Dark’ focusing on positivity overcoming negativity and good presiding evil. Tina Holt’s ‘Touch of Truth’ showcased a monochrome take on the style evolution of the coat, while Samantha Sully’s final collection ‘Déjà vu’ came from an alternative representation of the effects of Alzheimer’s. Fashion lecturer Kiku Jackson said: “I am exceptionally proud of how far the students have come and the exciting and challenging work that has been created. They have been an absolute joy to teach, dedicated, enthusiastic, innovative and dynamic, and as much as I shall miss the second year students, how could I possibly deprive the rest of the world from what they have given to me.” For info about studying fashion, art, media, music and many other courses visit www.selby.ac.uk

Tail-wagging turnout raises cash for local animals in need West Park in Goole was a hive of activity last month as Goole & District’s annual RSPCA Dog Show brought in a huge crowd, with over a hundred proud pooches taking their two-legged owners to enjoy the event. There was fun for all the family as the crowds enjoyed the bouncy castle, giant slide, a visit from Humberside Fire Service and a model train ride along with stalls and refreshments. Over a hundred dogs competed in fun classes from Cutest Pup to Sit and Wait and over £1,000 was raised for the branch. Press Officer Georgina Petty told Our Goole: “It was a very good day, lovely atmosphere and a great mix of dogs, all with very different characters! Thank you to all for such a great response - every penny raised will go to help local animals in need.” Call 07599 087527 for further information about Goole RSPCA or visit www.rspca-goole.org.uk 30

Issue 006 - July 2016 probably a good idea to ask a friend or a neighbour to accompany you while you show your home. • Be friendly – however, don’t be lured into giving away too much personal information. Be cautious of conversations that inform people of your movements, for example holiday plans and work schedules, anything that informs the viewer of when the property is likely to be empty. • Consider having your agent conduct the viewing on your behalf - make sure that the agent has accurate information regarding alarm codes and locations. You should also check that the alarm location is not referred to in any of the sales literature about your property. If you do decide to leave keys with your agent, it is a good idea to ask for a receipt and ensure that they will inform you of any viewings they will be conducting. • Sales board - using a sale board is a great way of marketing your property. However from time to time this does encourage people driving past to knock on the door and ask to view. If this happens, refer them to your agent and arrange a time that suits you and that you are comfortable with.

Business of the
month
Yorkshire Bed Shop is Goole’s only independent bed specialist - owned and managed by businessman Robert Barratt
Our Goole spoke to Robert to find out his views on running a business in Goole. Here he shares with us a heartwarming story of helping a retired couple get a good night’s sleep after they fell foul of an unscrupulous trader
Robert, when was your business founded? Yorkshire Bed Shop was founded in April 2009, born from the long-running bed department of Hargreaves Furniture Store which had traded in Goole since 1971. Can you tell us a little about your business and the services you provide? We offer quality beds at great value prices, delivered for free in the local area and are happy to collect and dispose of the customer’s old bed. How do you find the local area from a business perspective? As a shopkeeper, the worry for me is the amount of empty shop premises in the town. What was once a busy little Yorkshire market town has seen businesses move to out of town retail parks, and the internet 36
hasn’t helped the high street either. One of our strengths is providing the customer with a friendly face to speak to in the event of a problem and not via the faceless automated call centres taking over the country. Do you have any extraordinary stories related to your business to share with our readers? A retired couple on a pension had bought from another bed shop in town. They had paid but there was no delivery. Subsequently the business closed down and disappeared from the town leaving the couple £200 worse off and no new bed to show for it. I offered to supply them with a new bed, which they gladly accepted and hopefully renewed their faith in humanity. Outstanding customer service is paramount for you. Do you
have any returning customers who have bought all their beds from you going back years? Yes, we have a fairly loyal customer base. Having sold beds in Goole prior to the inception of this company in 2009, I have seen previous customers bring their daughters and sons who are setting up home back to us for a bed for themselves. What does the future hold for the Yorkshire Bed Shop? We’re looking into forging stronger partnerships with suppliers to be able to offer more special offers and deals to the buying public of Goole and the surrounding areas. To contact Robert at the Yorkshire Bed Shop, call 01405 763611 or email sale@yorkshirebedshop.co.uk

SPORTSNEWS ‘snaith Snipers’ set for maiden season in Selby & District league The Snaith Snipers, one of two teams representing Snaith Juniors in the Under 6 age group, have been busy taking part in a series of mini soccer tournaments in preparation for their first season in the Selby & District Junior Football League
The budding young footballers, who are sponsored by Our Goole’s sister title the Selby Journal, have been honing their skills and getting used to playing against other children in match situations, and the coaches have seen a major transformation in every player, with big improvements in passing and positioning, as well as goals scored. 40
Special mentions were reserved for Charlie SugdenBrook, Tyler Hurst and Harry Dawson-Cook, who each won the Player of the Tournament award, with every member of the team deserving credit for the effort they have put in throughout the series of tournaments. The Snipers are now looking forward to their presentation evening in July before once again concentrating their efforts on their inaugural season in the Selby & District league.
