INTRODUCTION Hello again and welcome to the July issue!
always popular RSPCA Dog Show at West Park.
Well, the summer has most certainly arrived, and (at the time of writing at least!) the weather is absolutely glorious, making Goole, Howden, and the surrounding villages look even more wonderful.
Our little corner of the East Riding has so much to offer, and we hope you’re getting out there and making the most of it. As much as we don’t want to say it, the nights are officially beginning to draw in again so make sure you enjoy our great outdoors and the best that our wonderful area has to offer.
It’s not difficult to see why this time of year is always popular, and there have certainly been some fantastic community events taking place over the last month or so. We’ve had Picnics in the Park in both Goole and Howden, a great family open day and the
If you need inspiration on what to do and where to go over the summer holidays, look no further than our events section. Have a great month, see you again in August!

WHAT A SWEET IDE LOCAL CHEMO PAT When her mum Michelle began chemotherapy treatment in December, Howden resident Kirstie Vincent was shocked to learn that the Queen’s Centre at Castle Hill Hospital in Cottingham spends around £300 each month on hard-boiled sweets
6
The sweets are great for patients undergoing chemotherapy as sucking on them helps to take away the metallic taste in the mouth that chemo can bring.
Drop-off points included Chantelle’s Hairdressers and The Co-op in Howden, and it wasn’t too long before Kirstie had collected at least a month’s worth.
However, when Kirstie learned of the cost each month to the hospital after reading a plea for donations in a local newspaper, she was determined to do her bit and help out the Queen’s Centre in any way she could. So she set about organising a mass sweet collection, putting up posters around Howden asking people to donate.
She told Our Goole: “Until my mum began her treatment, I had no idea that hard-boiled sweets were so useful for people undergoing cancer treatment, let alone how much they cost the hospital each month. I was determined to do whatever I could to help.”
Issue 030-July 2018
EA FOR TIENTS Kirstie recently delivered her bulk collection to delighted hospital staff, who had no idea what she had been doing, and now she is considering setting up a fundraising page where people can donate as little as £1 towards the cost of more sweets. As for Kirstie’s mum, Michelle, she is currently having a break from chemo, and will resume her next bout of treatment at the end of July. Kirstie said: “There are so many people undergoing treatment just like my mum at the Queen’s Centre and any donations we can make are so gratefully received by staff at the hospital.” If you would like to make a donation, contact Kirstie at kirstie.makey@gmail.com

Keep your bi
This month Sgt Lonsdale offers some hints and tips for keeping your bicycle safe from thieves
“If your bike is stolen or lost, Immobilise will inform all UK police that your bike is missing and should it come into contact with any police force then a check of the system could reunite you with your stolen or lost bike
10
Issue 030-July 2018
E PERSPECTIVE:
icycle secure There is nothing more annoying and inconvenient than having your property stolen, but there are several things you can do to make a bike thief’s life a little bit harder. • If you haven’t done so already register your bicycle’s frame number, along with any pictures and other details you have on www. immobilise.com. (Registration on Immobilise only takes a few minutes and it’s free. All you need is your bike’s make, model, identifying number code(s) and a few photographs).
If your bike is stolen or lost this free online register will inform all UK police and registered second-hand dealers that your bike is missing. Should it be offered for sale to a registered dealer or come into contact with any police force, then a check of the system could reunite you with your stolen or lost bike.
•
Invest in a quality lock, such as a D lock, and consider using two different types at the same time, as thieves rarely carry tools to break two different lock types.
• Lock your bike every time you leave it! Keep
the gap between the bike and the lock small, so inserting tools is made harder, and where possible, keep the locking barrel facing the ground too as this makes access more difficult.
•
Look at where you are storing your bike and make sure that your shed or garage is secured with a good quality lock. Consider putting an alarm on the shed or connect it to the house alarm if you have one.
•
Consider buying a cycle anchor that can be bolted to the wall or floor of your shed. Your cycle can then be fastened to it, or if you have several cycles lock them altogether.
•
If you have to leave your bike out on the street, where possible leave it in a well-lit area and lock both the frame and wheels to the bike stand or to secure street furniture.
MEET YOUR OFFICERS PCSO Katie Hart will be at the Moorlands Centre, Old Goole, to discuss community issues and offer crime prevention advice on the following dates: 10th July and 3rd August, 10am-12noon.

Crowds turn out for busiest Picnic in the Park yet For the fourth year running, hundreds of local families turned out in force to support Goole’s annual Picnic in the Park on Sunday 3 June The annual event raised close to £2,500 for the Pulmonary Fibrosis Trust, with various groups, societies and charities coming together at West Park to ensure a great family day out.
Jessica told Our Goole: “Pulmonary fibrosis is a respiratory disease where scars are formed in the lung tissues, leading to serious breathing problems. There are around 5,000 new cases every year in the UK.
The rain stayed away and visitors enjoyed entertainment including performances from Expressions Cheerleading Academy and the Goole Goddesses, as well as live music from the bandstand.
“My uncle Phill was well known for his hard work supporting people with learning difficulties, and for his musical talents with Goole Amateur Dramatics and Castaway.
Picnic in the Park Goole is organised each year by 33-year-old Jessica Sharp, who came up with the idea after sadly losing her uncle Phillip Sharp to pulmonary fibrosis in 2014. She is now an ambassador for the Pulmonary Fibrosis Trust, which provides personal support for people living with PF, and raises awareness of the life-limiting illness. 18
“Picnic in the Park is a great way to remember him, while raising vital funds for a great charity.” Jessica is already looking ahead to next year’s event, which will take place on Sunday 2 June. Search ‘Picnic in the Park Goole’ on Facebook or email jessica.sharp@pulmonaryfibrosistrust.org for more information on how to get involved in 2019, whether by volunteering, running a stall, performing or donating a raffle prize.

New play sessions for parents When two local mums realised Swinefleet was without a playgroup, they took the initiative and set one up in the village hall Friends Vicky Jones and Carley Godson kicked off the first Wednesday play session at the beginning of June, and the response from parents in and around the village has been positive. Vicky told Our Goole: “There isn’t anything really for children between the ages of 0-5 in Swinefleet, so we thought why not start something up. The response so far has been great. Everyone is welcome to come along and give it a try.”
The sessions take place every Wednesday between 10.00am11.00am, with messy play, singing and crafts. There are regular ‘themed’ sessions and each week children make a craft that they can take home.
For more information call Vicky Jones on 07401 111533 or search Little Treasures Swinefleet on Facebook. Entry costs £2, plus 50p for each additional child. Drinks are included.

This month, Business Support Specialist Heidi Green addresses trade shows - a great networking opportunity
Make an exhibition of yourself! While they can be expensive, tradeshows are also a great opportunity to showcase your business, raise brand awareness and generate new leads. Not forgetting the all-important networking. However, you must do your research.
If possible, visit the show as an attendee first, speak to other exhibitors and visitors, and try and get an idea of which area has the best footfall. If you decide to go ahead, book early and you may get a discount.
Be clear about what it is that you want to achieve – is it raising your profile, making new contacts, generating new leads?
Importantly – shout about the fact that you’re going to be there! Invite as many contacts as possible, and get the word out on social media. Make sure your stand represents your business clearly and effectively. Keep it free from clutter and engage with everyone. Consider having a prize draw – ask people

However, do remember to be careful when it comes to data capture – always ask permission to make contact after the event. Remember to take photos and share them on social media. If you do make new contacts and have permission to follow up, strike while the iron is hot and start building that all-important rapport. Finally, remember to measure success - did you meet your objectives and did you get a return on your investment? This will help you decide if it was worth it. ANGELA HART
HEAD OF PERSONAL INJURY
Accidents in the workplace Your employer has a duty of care towards you and is required to take steps to ensure your working environment is safe, thereby minimising the risk of an accident. If your employer is failing to comply with Health and Safety Legislation and you have an accident resulting in injury, then you may have grounds to make a claim for compensation. Many people worry about the implications of making a claim against their employer, as they feel they may be subject to the repercussions of such an action. If you have been with your employer for more than two years and they were to discipline or dismiss you for making a legitimate claim, there may be grounds for unfair dismissal. Some people are also reluctant to claim compensation after an accident at work because they may be worried about the financial impact their claim could have on their employer. All employers are required by law to take out employer’s liability insurance. So, if a claim is successful, the compensation is paid out by the insurance company, not the employer. If you have suffered an accident at work in the last three years that wasn’t your fault and would like some further advice, call Heptonstalls on 0800 917 8267 or visit www.heptonstalls.co.uk

Property expert David Leake of Housesetc explains why for sale boards are are so important for an estate agent
Bored of For Sale boards? Never There’s no doubt about it – boards get people talking. When people see a For Sale sign going up, they tell family and friends that there is a house for sale or to let in the area. Boards are a visual way of increasing brand awareness, which is important for all agents no matter the size or how well established. Sale boards are accessible to anyone of any age, which can’t always be said for online marketing. Despite the huge rise in online property portals, the sheer amount of boards produced in 2017 suggests that they are as
26
vitally important as ever. Boards capture the attention of a wide range of people, such as those who aren’t looking online for a property or those who aren’t actively house hunting. When you break down the cost of marketing for agents, you will find that the supply of estate agent boards will be one of your most cost-effective tools.

Doing cartwheels for 35 years of Goole Gymnastics! When Peter and June Brooke set up Goole Gymnastics in 1983, their daughters Peta and Samantha were young girls practising their technique on the mats Fast forward more than three decades and those same girls are now lead coaches at the club, which has over 300 members ranging in age from 18 months to adults. A special display in June celebrated the club’s 35th anniversary, with the club’s VYPERS (Volunteering Young People in the East Riding) presented with certificates showing how many hours they have volunteered over the last 12 months. Peter Brooke told Our Goole: “The VYPER scheme is for anyone between the ages of 11 and 24. We are very fortunate to have our VYPERs as they help to make the Club so successful by helping with moving equipment at displays, fundraising, helping 38
with our tuck shop and many other activities.” Next year a group of Goole Gymnasts are going to Austria for the World Gymnaestrada. It will be the fourth time a team from Goole has appeared on the world stage, when they were part of the World Team in Helsinki three years ago. The summer is packed with displays and gymnastics festivals, and in the autumn the competition season begins
in earnest, kicking off with competitions in Newcastle and Edinburgh. During school holidays, extra sessions are arranged, with the opportunity for non-members to come and try gymnastics. These are posted on the website www.goolegymnastics.co.uk Peter told us: “Anyone wishing to experience the sport can contact us on email at goolegymnastics@hotmail.co.uk or on 01405 769259.
