INTRODUCTION We can’t believe we’re halfway through 2017 already - time is passing by far too quickly this year! In this issue, you can read all about Kenton Robbins, a man from Barmby-on-the-Marsh who’s battled through ill health to go on and compete in a season of gruelling triathlons, all in the name of charity. As well as that, we look into the roots of Goole’s canals, with The Yorkshire Waterways Musem offering day trips exploring their history. Also not to be missed, is the story of Jackie Mumby from Goole, who’s recently been commended at the 2017 MS Society Awards for her exceptional fundraising efforts. Don’t miss your chance to enter your little

one into our Little Stars 2017 competition photoshoot slots are booking up quickly! In sport, we’re extremely proud to celebrate Goole RUFC’s nail-biting triumph over Gloucester’s Spartans at Twickenham in the National Junior Vase in a thrilling encounter, in which both teams gave it their all. And if that isn’t enough, you’ll also be in with the chance to win an Amazon Echo Dot. We’d also like to thank ‘Goole in Pictures’ for this month’s cover image. You can check out the rest of their collection on Facebook. There’s plenty more exciting features inside too which we hope you’ll get stuck into. We hope you have a brilliant month and Our Goole will be back at the beginning of July.

Inspirational triathlete Swim-Ride-Runs in the name of charity Triathlons are one of the most intense and gruelling sports out there. With their relentless combination of cycling, swimming and long-distance running, they’re certainly not for the faint hearted. This doesn’t deter Barmby’s Kenton Robbins though, who will be competing in The Homecrafts Goole Sprint Triathlon for the second year running - all in the name of charity Kenton’s been on quite the journey to get to where he is today, and in 2013 would probably have never even considered competing. He told Our Goole: ‘Back in 2013 I started to present with atrial fibrillation as my heartbeat become irregular. After an extensive period of diagnosis, they found that my lymphatic system and my lymph nodes were enlarging. One of the scans revealed a tumour on my thyroid. On a positive note, the tumour was benign but the recovery took longer than expected. Unfortunately, after eight months, I found two more tumours in my throat. Luckily, they were more accessible for the surgeon and after a short convalescence I was back to work and looking forward to rude health again.’ 6

After such a tough time, Kenton chose to look to the future and put his time and energy into HIIT training, working closely with Mark Wilson of Lion Fitness, based in Selby. It didn’t take Kenton long to find his fitness improving dramatically. Kenton then took his wife to watch the triathlon at Allerthorpe, and found himself completely inspired: ‘Mark and I booked on to the Goole Tri in 2016. We gave it our all and after everything I’d been through, I wasn’t going to let a Swim-Ride-Run get in the way!’ With the success of his first triathlon, Kenton decided it was time to put his new sport to good use. This year, he’s set himself the mammoth challenge of a full year’s triathlon season with at least six events, roughly one a month from March to September.

Issue 017-June 2017

During this triathlon season, Kenton will be raising money for a whole host of charities, including the Butterfly Thyroid Cancer Trust. The charity is there to help anybody struggling with thyroid cancer and is the first of its kind dedicated to this type. This is a cause that is very much close to Kenton’s heart, and makes the hard work in his training all the more worthwhile. Other charities Kenton will be fundraising for during his challenge include: Macmillan Cancer Support, Alzheimer’s Research UK, Children’s Burns Trust and The Fountain Centre. His big race in Goole is just a few months away - The Homecrafts Goole Sprint Triathlon 2017 will kick off on Sunday, October 1st. He’s even tempted to run in a separate event next month - The Goole Triathlon,

which takes place on Sunday, July 16th. We encourage all our readers to take a look at Kenton’s Twitter feed: @kentonr, where he will be posting updates of all his races as well as more details on his fundraising. He’ll also be competing in York this month. You can donate to Alzheimer’s Research for this race via his JustGiving page at: https://www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/kenton-robbins2 For The Homecrafts Goole Sprint Triathlon, to raise funds for the Butterfly Thyroid Cancer Trust, donations can be made here: https://www. justgiving.com/fundraising/kenton-robbins6 7

Canal Roots with Yorkshire Wat Yorkshire Waterways Museum are inviting guests aboard their boat, Waterstart, to explore 200 years worth of history Many of us have ancestors that spent their working life on the canal routes of East Yorkshire, and now the people of Goole and the surrounding area are able to experience them for themselves, as Yorkshire Waterways Museum begin offering trips over the summer months. Although most of the canals, locks and swing bridges can now be operated with a simple press of a button, they’re still in great working order and our 19thcentury ancestors would feel right at home. Yorkshire Waterways Museum will be utilising its minibus service too, to transport the lucky passengers

to and from the moorings. To keep you energised as you journey across the waters, passengers are invited to bring their own lunch, although refreshments will also be provided. All trips will depart from the museum at 10am and be back for 4.30pm. Places are limited, so make sure you book nice and early to avoid any disappointment. Tickets cost £10 per person, or £12 in the busy summer months between June and August. For more information, and to book your voyage, call: 01405 768730, or email: info@waterwaysmuseum.org.uk

FROM A POLICE Be aware if you are going on holiday This issue, Sgt David Lonsdale warns you to remember home security when you go on holiday this summer

“Just because you are going on holiday it doesn’t mean burglars are taking time off too”

10

Issue 017-June 2017

E PERSPECTIVE: Imagine that you have returned home after a fantastic holiday to discover your home has been burgled - this is not something the police want anyone to have to go through. Just because you are going on holiday it doesn’t mean burglars are taking time off too and if it looks like you are away then your home could become a target. We are urging everyone to check their home security before they go away and ensure their holiday is one to remember for the right reasons. Follow our simple tips to secure your home against burglars: • Make sure your windows and doors are locked. If you have a burglar alarm, turn it on and leave the key or passcode with a family member or trusted neighbour. • Remove and secure items that may be used to break in or climb into your home and lock any outbuildings so burglars can’t use the tools inside. • Use automatic timer switches to turn on lights and perhaps a radio when it gets dark. • Ask a trusted neighbour or family member to come round and open and close curtains and move any post so it looks like people are coming and going at your home. • Cancel any newspaper or milk deliveries. • Don’t advertise that you are away. Social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter can be a risk if people know you are away and your home is empty. • Work with your neighbours to keep an eye on each other’s homes. Neighbourhood Watch and Neighbourhood Networks encourage this type of community spirit and long term it may be worth joining one or setting one up in your street. For details visit: www.ourwatch.org.uk or contact your local policing team. •

Never leave keys anywhere near the front door - burglars know where to look. Consider fitting a letterbox cage or other restrictor to prevent burglars from putting their hands or gadgets through and opening the latches from the inside.

The public should call the police if they see people acting suspiciously in their community, if there is a burglary in progress or if they have details about those involved in criminality. This can be done using 999 in an emergency, 101 in a non-emergency or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Crimes in your area: • Two separate vehicles were broken into at the fishing pond near Goole and fishing equipment stolen. • A garage door in Goole was damaged in an attempted break-in. • A UPVC door was damaged in an attempted break in and a garden gate was also stolen at the same time. • A secure shed in a rear garden was broken into and power tools stolen. • A rear door was damaged in an attempted break-in. • A double-glazed window was damaged by a pellet that was fired at the window. • Eggs thrown at a window have caused damage.

for Key Volunteers Natalie would also like to thank Superdrug, whose stores support Marie Curie throughout the year, holding events and promoting the charity’s cause. Kara Smith, pictured below with Natalie, is from Superdrug’s Goole store and, as Natalie told Our Goole: ‘Kara has been a great support in Goole, going above and beyond to raise awareness and vital funds for the services that we provide.’ If you think you have a few hours spare every few weeks and would like to get involved with the fundraising group we are holding a meeting on the evening of Tuesday 13th June at Vikings Pub in Goole in the evening time. Dressing to Impress for Yorkshire’s Hospitals A charity ball organised by Goole’s Aimee Slack, is set to raise money for our county’s hospitals

We all love an excuse to pop our best dress on and dust off that old suit, and Aimee Slack from Goole is giving us a chance to do just that, all in the name of charity! Aimee is no stranger to charity events, as she explained to us: ‘I enjoy raising money for charities. I did my first event last year and raised £500 on a [children’s] fun day.’ This year, Aimee has decided to turn her attention to the adults with her Dress to Impress Charity Ball as she ‘wanted to do something more formal’. The ball is all in aid of supporting the Ryegate Centre at the Sheffield Children’s Hospital, as well as the oncology ward at Scunthorpe Hospital, something close to Aimee’s heart. In her own words, she ‘wanted to help give back for what the hospital did for my grandma before she passed away.’ The oncology ward at Scunthorpe Hospital provides vital care to cancer sufferers in East Yorkshire and Aimee hopes that her Dress to Impress Charity 16

Ball will help maintain the care already provided to patients. The Ryegate Centre at Sheffield Children’s Hospital is dedicated to helping children with complex neurological conditions, and all money raised will go a long way in giving the extra financial support both of these causes deserve. As well as a raffle, with gifts provided by Karen’s Beauty Box in Goole, the ball will feature music from the popular local band, Sandra’s Wedding, as well as featuring DJ Jon Davis. And if that’s not enough to tempt you, there’s a buffet too! The Dress to Impress Charity Ball will be held at 7pm on Sunday, June 10, at the Victoria Club on Carter Street, Goole. Tickets are £5 per person, but if you’d like to bring along a plus one, it’s only £8. So don your dancing shoes and help Aimee raise money for these fantastic causes this June. For more info, call Aimee Slack on 07841616860

Goole MS Campaigner Awarded for Hard Work at National Awards Goole resident, Jackie Mumby, who lives with multiple sclerosis, is ‘overwhelmed’ to be highly commended at the 2017 MS Society Awards Multiple sclerosis, or MS, is a hard and unpredictable condition affecting over 100,000 people in the UK alone. For Jackie Mumby, who lives in Goole and was diagnosed seven years ago aged just 29, MS causes her to experience a range of fluctuating and invisible symptoms, often making it difficult to cope.

Jackie went on to campaign with the MS Society and has since helped launch the ‘MS: Enough’ campaign by speaking out about the unfair assessment process for disability benefits, and delivered a petition to the House of Commons which persuaded the Government to halt their proposed changes to Personal Independence Payment (PIP) assessments.

To make matters harder, Jackie’s MS also led to her being labelled a ‘scrounger’ that was too lazy to work - putting on even more of a strain on her during a difficult time. This discrimination against this largely invisible condition is not something anybody should have to deal with when trying to live with MS.

It seems right that Jackie’s determination saw her be recognised at this year’s MS Society awards in London, where she was one of three finalists nominated for the ‘Campaigner of the Year’ award. In speaking about her success, Jackie said that she never thought her campaigning work would be recognised in such a way: ‘Just being nominated is amazing, but to make it to the final three is beyond belief. It’s so overwhelming.’

This mistreatment towards her only served to increase her determination to stand up against discrimination on behalf of everyone with multiple sclerosis, in the hope of raising awareness and increasing the understanding of this condition. As Jackie said to Our Goole: ‘Coming to terms with a diagnosis and having to deal with the continuation of care is not something that most people can begin to understand. It’s about time that people were made aware of what MS is and the difficulties we have, even though you can’t always see what’s wrong.’ 22

Everyone at Our Goole would like to thank Jackie for her unwavering dedication to fighting for a cause she cares so much about and congratulate her on the recognition she so deserves. To find out more about the awards, visit www. mssociety.org.uk/awards If you suffer from MS, or know someone that does, call the MS Society for free on: 0808 800 8000.

This month, Business Support Specialist Heidi Green tells us how a positive attitude can take your business a long way

Have you got the right attitude? We’ve all seen negative news stories in the press, but just imagine for a minute that everything was reported in a positive light. Imagine how we would feel - more optimistic and willing to seize the day. So why don’t you think about this when it comes to your business? You have the choice between two shops; one is a bit rundown, the owner is complaining how bad trade is and you do not feel welcomed. The second is bright, tidy and you get a warm friendly welcome. Which one are you going to buy from?

24

The same goes for networking events. You meet a consultant who says how everyone is cutting their budgets, how hard it is to find work and who does not engage with you. You quickly (and politely) move on and speak to another consultant who is interested in you and your business, enthusiastic about what they are doing and makes suggestions based on your conversation - again, which one would you engage with? Get the message? Attitude is contagious. We all remember leaving a conversation with someone and feeling drained, so let’s get that positive mental attitude up and running. You want your customers, staff, suppliers and all those you meet during the day to want to be a part of your business. It’s a catch 22 - the better your business performs, the more you

Issue 017-June 2017 grow in confidence, the better you feel and the more positive your attitude. Obviously you need to be realistic and set SMART goals - Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time Bound. In the meantime, here are some top tips to keep positive: • Look for the positives - be a glass half full person • Even when you are feeling down (it happens) ensure you don’t let others see it (use a mentor to help with these feelings)

Costs to consider when buying a house

• Think about your successes. We often just look at the mountain to climb and not how far we have come

When buying a new home, don’t forget to budget in these upfront fees.

• It’s all about progress not perfection

Stamp duty is one of the main upfront costs to consider on houses valued over £125,000.

• Surround yourself with positive people, remember, it is contagious So go on, give it a go, have that positive mental attitude and see how it helps you and your business be the best it possibly can be. Heidi Adele Green – The Business HAG, offering Help, Advice & Guidance to Businesses since 2003. Email heidi@the-business-hag.co.uk.

There will also be a valuation fee to pay to establish how much your lenders are prepared to lend you. This could be as much as £1,500, although some lenders might not charge you for this. It is advisable that you also get the property checked by a surveyor, so that any potential structural problems are highlighted. These range from a basic survey costing around £250, to a full structural survey from £600 or more. You will need a solicitor or licensed conveyor to carry out the legal work, and fees typically start at around £450. They will also do local searches, which will cost around £150, to check whether there are any local plans or problems. You will need to have the money for the sale transferred which incurs an electronic transfer fee, typically about £30 to cover the lender’s cost of transferring the mortgage money to your solicitor. If you are selling a property, you will also have to pay estate agents fees. These are normally around 1% to 3% of the sale price plus VAT. When you come to move you need to consider removal costs, although the cheaper option is to hire a van and move yourself. If you are looking to buy or sell a house and would like further advice, call Heptonstalls on 0800 917 8267 or visit www.heptonstalls.co.uk 25

Issue 017-June 2017 the loan will be based on the earnings or assets of both parent and child, and if one of them stops paying, the other one will become liable for the entire debt. Family Deposit Mortgage A family member deposits cash in a special savings account and the money is then held as security against the mortgage. Flexible Family Mortgages A parent or family member can use some of the value in their own property as security. Another option is for the family member to place savings in an offset account which reduces the amount of the mortgage on which interest is charged and thus reduces repayments. One of the best ways to find the right mortgage is to seek help from an Independent Mortgage Broker. They will work on their customer’s behalf and negotiate between them and the mortgage lender. There are two kinds of mortgage brokers - those who use a restricted panel of lenders and those who search the whole mortgage market to find the most suitable lender.

Business of the

month

Carl Smith and Andy Etherington, company directors at Repair & Restore, credit their success to their great customer service

Repair & Restore, based on Larsen Road, Goole, has decades of experience in the vehicle repair trade. We spoke to them to find out a little more about their fantastic business Can you tell us a bit about how you found yourself setting up Repair and Restore Body Shop? We started the business in September 2014 after being made redundant with the closure of Brian Leighton Garages in Howden. Can you tell us about the services the business offers? We are vehicle body repair and paintwork specialists. We carry out repairs on a wide range of vehicles and, after moving to new premises on Larsen Road, we are installing a full size commercial spray booth which will be big enough to paint trucks, tankers and trailers. We can carry out repairs for all insurance companies and have a fleet of free courtesy cars while the customers’ vehicles are in for repair. We also do alloy wheel refurbishments, fit

32

body styling kits such as spoilers and body kits as well as custom paintwork. We have also restored a range of classic and vintage cars for local customers from a 1930s MG to modern-day classics such as Golf GTIs and Ford RS Turbos. What makes you stand out from other businesses offering similar services? We are one of the largest vehicle body shops in the area and are completely independent, which gives us the edge when it comes to customer service. Do you have any interesting facts/stories about Repair and Restore Body Shop? We won the Goole and Howdenshire “New Business of the Year” in 2016. We are also Peugeot manufacturer approved to carry out warranty paintwork and are working towards Citroen approval too.

From a business perspective, how do you find the local area? We have always had great support from local businesses in the Goole and Howden area and whenever possible choose local businesses as our suppliers. What does the future hold for Repair and Restore Body Shop? With the installation of the new commercial spray booth, we do see ourselves painting more trucks but more recently we have been approached by work providers to do more insurance work. Lastly, what are the main benefits you find to advertising in our magazines? The biggest benefit is getting our message out to local people, and that when it comes to insurance repairs, you can use a body shop of your choice without being told where your vehicle has to be repaired.

SPORTSNEWS

The hallowed turf of Twickenham has been graced by some of the world’s true sporting greats since it opened its doors for the first time in 1909, and Goole RUFC is the latest success story in its halls of fame. In a thrilling encounter, in which the lead changed hands an amazing four times, the ever-vocal travelling support from Goole witnessed their town emerge victorious and return home as heroes. 38

This set the scene for the rest of the game, with both sides giving their all in a hard-fought encounter.
