Howden S With Howden Show 2018 taking place next month, details of the exciting and varied programme of attractions and entertainment planned for the big day have been released

A new addition for this year is a Kidszone area jam-packed with fun activities for children and young people. This will include free circus performances by Circus Sensible in a full-size big top, as well as the chance for families to try their hand at circus skills between shows. There will also be a chance to watch slacklining

displays and, for those who dare, have a go at this extreme balance sport, which stems from tightrope walking. Some of the first slackliners were climbers in California, who tied thin bits of tape – or webbing – between trees and old cars, and tried walking along the tape, both for fun, and for the challenge it brought. The hugely popular children’s sports and fancy

Show 2018 dress competitions, will also take place in the Kidszone. Headline attractions in the main arena include breathtaking demonstrations by the RPM bike trials display team, which is made up of some of the UK’s most experienced demonstration riders. SMJ Falconry will give flying displays in the main arena with its diverse collection of birds of prey, which includes owls, falcons, hawks, kites, an eagle, a vulture and raven. There will also be a chance for members of the public to get up close to these beautiful birds in a series of ‘have-a-go’ sessions, as well as falconry-based activities for children.

The SMJ team will also be staging ferret races in a separate area of the showground.

The Howden Show Committee is delighted to announce that the 16th Lancers re-enactment group will give displays in the main arena to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of World War One. One member of the group, which will also be setting up a WW1-style camp on the showground, lives locally. Howden Show 2018 will take place on Sunday 1 July at The Ashes Playing Fields in Howden. FROM A POLICE

Your home – This month, Sgt Lonsdale discusses keeping your home safe from opportunistic criminals

Don’t make it obvious to burglars you are away by leaving your curtains or blinds open – nothing reveals that a house is unoccupied so much as curtains drawn during the day

10

Issue 029-June 2018

E PERSPECTIVE:

– Keep it safe Burglary is by and large an opportunistic crime, with burglars looking for a home that gives them the easiest way of committing their crime undetected and with the fewest obstacles to negotiate. In many cases burglars do not need to use any force to gain entry which can be achieved via an insecure window or door. So how can you keep your home and property safe? 1 in 3 burglaries are via an open door or window Always lock your front and back doors and if the window is open for ventilation and you would consider it easy to access from outside, close it whenever you leave the room - it only takes seconds to climb in and steal something. Going on holiday If you are going away remember to cancel the milk or newspapers. Don’t make it obvious to burglars you are away by leaving your curtains or blinds open –

nothing reveals that a house is unoccupied so much as curtains drawn during the day. If you don’t already have any, consider getting timer switches and setting your lights both downstairs and upstairs to come on at different times throughout the day/evening. Again a trusted neighbour collecting your post and possibly parking their car on your drive while you are away will add to your security. Don’t talk about your planned holiday on social media – you don’t know who may be reading your comments or who they might tell. Security around the home Make your home look occupied by leaving a radio on or a light on a timer switch to make the house sound and look as if someone is at home, even if you are out. Never leave your spare keys in a hiding place such as under a doormat, in a flowerpot or inside a letterbox.

Goole and District RSPCA’s Annual Dog Show The town’s RSPCA Dog Show celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2015 and continues to lend a paw to local animals with another barking mad fundraiser coming to West Park Goole on Saturday, 23rd June Whether you reckon your dapper dog has the waggiest tail or fancy your chances at the best six legs, there’s fun for all the family including crafts, food, a bouncy slide, rides, tombolas and more. There’s something for everyone from Apprentice winner Alana Spencer’s East Riding representatives offering ‘Ridiculously Rich’ sweet treats to hand-crafted bunting and dog bandanas. Old favourites such as the model train will return, children’s games as well as dog rescue charities, Jerry Green Dog Sanctuary and the Retired Greyhound Trust. Elaine Cowling of Positive Dog Training Solutions will be on hand with training tips and advice and for £1 a go (proceeds to Goole RSPCA) put your pooch through their paces on the agility course. Clan Shots Photography will be there with a special offer on photos, why not capture you and your canine having fun in the sun? The Red Watch Fire and Rescue team from

12

Goole will also be in attendance to judge a class. Press Officer and Secretary Georgina said: “Goole and District RSPCA couldn’t continue without your support. This is the highlight of our fundraising calendar and we have been inundated with enquiries for stalls. Thank you to all our hard working volunteers, the judges and a special thank you to our compère, Cllr Ian Blackburn.” The event takes place from 1-3pm (registration 12.30). £1 per entry. Terms and conditions apply. Arena volunteers decision on entries is final. For further information about the show or Goole RSPCA, contact 07599 087527 or gooleanddistrictrspca@gmail.com.

to create up to 100 jobs in Goole Motordepot Car Supermarket based in Hull has recently announced plans to develop a four-acre vehicle preparation centre in the town The company anticipate up to 100 new jobs will be created and the centre will become a cornerstone in its future growth plans. The centre will have the capacity to hold around 500 vehicles and will include 40 vehicle ramps, five MOT stations, on-site paint facilities, a 30-bay valeting area and state-of-the-art vehicle photography suites. The centre will focus entirely on ensuring all vehicles are mechanically and aesthetically prepared to the highest standards before being delivered directly to the retail showrooms. The centre will operate seven days per week and is capable of handling around 150 vehicles each and every day. Managing Director Stephen Butterley believes an investment in Goole was a very sensible choice. He said: “We have been looking for suitable locations for some time and the site in 16

Goole was perfect in every way. Logistically it made sense, with great motorway access that’s important for distribution to our sites across the UK, but equally important is the large catchment area for attracting people with the necessary skills and attributes that we’re going to need. “With OTE earnings for qualified technicians in the region of £35,000 we’re expecting to be able to fill all the available roles quite quickly and we’re hoping people in the area will be excited by the opportunities that working for Motordepot can offer them.” Recruitment is already under way for vehicle technicians and mechanics, MOT testers, paint specialists and valet team members as well as the necessary administration and logistics posts that will be created once open. For further information, visit www.motordepot.co.uk.

Pets Reunited The Goole Facebook page reuniting lost pets with their owners

Once upon a time, if you’d lost your pet, you’d have to resort to sticking posters up and down every street with a picture of your beloved pet and your telephone number and just hope that someone would find them and call you. But now, thanks to the power of social media, it is a much quicker and more effective process. Facebook page ‘Lost and found pets in Goole and surrounding areas’ is filled with posts from people whose pets have gone missing and hundreds of success stories of being reunited. Anne Howard-Webb, who started the page back in November 2011, told us: “The page has over 6,400 members now and it’s a great site for reuniting owners with their missing pets. Quite often they have just escaped from the garden and because of the page, people can post that they have gone missing and more people are on the lookout. 18

“We have reunited hundreds of pets with their owners over the past six-and-a-half years. There was a cat called Gargamel, a Norwegian Forest Cat that had been missing for three-and-a-half years. It started visiting the Lowther Hotel and my son’s girlfriend, Georgia, who works there, had been feeding it. It had been coming into the Lowther courtyard for a few months and eventually we managed to catch and scan it and found the owner. The lady had moved to Sheffield from Aire Street with her job and had given up all hope of finding him, assuming he had been run over. She was so happy he was ok but couldn’t take him back because she had got a new cat. She signed him over to Goole RSPCA and my son Connor and Georgia actually adopted him! It’s such a happy ending and it’s great that he has a loving home now. It was just lucky he was chipped. It’s so important to chip your pets so they can be quickly reunited with you if they get lost.”

This month, Business Support Specialist Heidi Green discusses how to protect your intellectual property

Intellectual property and your business A successful business is built on well-managed intangible assets or IP. McDonald’s, Coca-Cola, Nestle, Nike and Amazon have all used their IP and have stood the test of time. Whether it’s a trademark, copyright, design or patent, you need to consider how it fits in with your business. Can you use it to increase business, for example selling under licence or offering a franchise? The main types of IP are:

Patents – protection of new inventions Trademarks – protects brands, could be words or logos or a combination of both and can even be a sound (think of Asda Price). Design – protects the overall visual appearance of a product. Copyright – protects photographs, literature, art, films, sound recordings etc. It is essential to consider a regular IP audit. Identify the products and services vital within your business and what market advantage these give you.

Issue 029-June 2018 Franchising is one way of growing your business and sharing your IP. As the franchisor, you own the IP and the franchisee pays a fee and/ or regular payments to use it. Think of Uber, the biggest taxi business that does not own any vehicles or Airbnb that owns no property. Also, be aware that by registering a Limited Company at Companies House gives you no rights to prevent others using your trademark. If you are a designer have a look at www.acid. uk.com for practical advice and specialist support to help you manage your IP. Copyright is created all the time by business. On the simplest level think about your website, who owns the copyright? You or your web designers? Keep ahead of the competition and create value from your ideas and ensure sustainable business success.

PARALEGAL SPECIALIST

Legal Focus: Executors of a will The executor/executors of your will are the people appointed as the personal representatives of your estate after your death to collect the details of your assets, pay all debts (if any) and distribute your estate under the terms of your wills. Anyone aged 18 or above can be an executor of your will and it is important to choose your executors with care as the role involves a great deal of work and responsibility. You can have up to four executors and most people have their surviving spouse and perhaps one or two family members initially. An executor can also be a beneficiary of your estate, in fact this arrangement is quite common. It must be somebody you trust as it will be their responsibility to follow the instructions in your will and to find fair solutions to any disagreements.

It is also important to think carefully before choosing your husband, wife or partner as your only executor. Bear in mind that they will be dealing with your death so, by naming somebody else to be an executor along with your spouse, you can at least take the burden of the paperwork off their shoulders at what will inevitably be a very emotional time. For further advice or support with this and any other matters, contact Heptonstalls on 0800 917 8267 or visit www.heptonstalls.co.uk

Property expert David Leake of Housesetc discusses keeping up with the Jones’ this month

Jealous homeowners sell up to better their friends According to a recent study, one in eight Brits are so envious of their friends and family’s homes that they’re opting to sell up and buy a new one! In research, 2,408 homeowners were quizzed on their attitudes towards their home versus the homes of others. The most common reactions to being envious of other people’s homes were: making a start on renovations/decorating, looking at other houses on the market, decluttering and spring

26

cleaning. Some people enjoy making their homes perfect for the way they live, for others, it’s not so easy to know what they want or where to get the ideas. Rather than feeling jealous, they could speak to their friends and family members and come up with ideas together.

Goole Town Tigers Under 9 Blacks The team has had a great year, with their last game of the season seeing them take home the Under 9s World Cup The Tigers got off to a great start in their final game of the season, scoring within the first two minutes from a great corner put away by Logan Allen, but the lead was short-lived when Garforth Rangers Blue levelled the score on the five-minute mark. Powering on, Rangers scored again taking the lead just before the 15-minute mark. Shortly after the interval Allen levelled the score yet again to 2-2. Tigers were then under tremendous pressure but

with Karlson Thompson, Jay Clarkson and Archie Barker in defence the Tigers need not have worried as their brilliant defending cleared multiple attacks. Going into the last quarter saw Rangers throw everything at the goal with all Tigers defending extremely well, which kept them in the game. With two minutes left on the clock Tigers won a free kick,

which saw a scrappy clearance by Rangers with the ball landing at Kai Arrowsmith’s feet. With one swift kick he managed to place it straight into the back of the net, seeing the tigers win gold and the cup in the Under 9s World Cup 2018. The man of the match was Artjoms Bogdanovs. Our Goole has been proud to sponsor the team for the past two years.

GOALKEEPER REQUIRED Snaith Juniors are looking for a goalkeeper to join their Under 8s team (under 9s next season). Date of birth between 01/09/09 and 31/08/10. Some experience preferred. For more information, please contact Dave on 07896 104969
