The Christmas Party organised by local charity in support of neonatal intensive care unit, Scunthorpe
Scunthorpe NICU Little Warriors is dedicated to uplifting and supporting families with babies in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Scunthorpe General Hospital.
Its mission is simple and profound: to offer the care and assistance these families need during a challenging time.
Emma Clay, Chair, told Scunthorpe Journal:
“My son, Alfie was born at 28 weeks and we wanted to give back to our local NICU after they supported us in what was a very dark time. We want to support families whose babies are going through what could be the most difficult start in their early days.
“Alfie is now eight and, although needing hospital check-ups every few years, is mischievous and into most things boys his age are, including computers and football. We already supported the hospital by way of
fundraising, to say thank you for the all the care we as a family received.
“Having charity status is a huge deal, it allows us to be recognised as a real organisation, to work within proper guidelines, and it means we can apply for grants and funding, which can only benefit the NICU and the community.”
The Christmas Party is a children’s/family party which will be held at Redbourne Club Scunthorpe, Cemetery Road from 5.30-8pm on Monday 23rd December.
Get ready for an unforgettable day! Enjoy a lavish buffet, meet Elsa from Frozen, and have a magical encounter with Father Christmas himself. Plus hair braiding and vibrant face painting. It’s a spectacular event for the entire family, all raising money for Scunthorpe NICU Little Warriors.

FROM A POLICE
Minimal monstrous behaviour this Halloween and Bonfire period
“The vast majority of people we met during this period were getting into the spirit of the occasion and it was great to see everyone coming together to enjoy themselves.”
POLICE PERSPECTIVE:
This
issue, Scunthorpe Police gives an update on the past few months and how there was very little monstrous behaviour in the Humberside force area this Halloween and Bonfire Night, which can be a busy time for the force
A small minority acted in a way that was unacceptable, but as always, our neighbourhood, patrol and volunteer officers acted swiftly to deal with anyone who was trying to dampen the spirit of our local communities.
We received five reports of Halloween-related antisocial behaviour (ASB) on Thursday 31 October, along with two crime investigations logged relating to Halloween and the ‘trick or treating’ tradition.
There were 80 reports of Bonfire Night ASB-related incidents from Friday 1 November to Tuesday 5 November, and the vast majority of these were calls regarding fires and fireworks in inappropriate locations or being misused, which, again, were quickly dealt with by our officers and colleagues from Humberside Fire and Rescue Service.
During this time, 21 crime investigations were also logged for bonfire or firework-related incidents.
For those who did commit crimes within this period, our teams swiftly caught up with the people responsible and warned them about their behaviour. Some were also taken home and spoken to in front of their parents.
Superintendent Alex Weeks said: “The vast majority of people we met during this period were getting into the spirit of the occasion and it was great to see everyone coming together to enjoy themselves.
“However, we know the impact that antisocial behaviour can have on people – particularly those who are elderly
or vulnerable, and that’s why we arranged our shift patterns to have additional officers out on the streets and joined forces with the local councils, along with Humberside Fire and Rescue Service to deal with any issues that arose as quickly as possible.
“Our Force Control Room also continues to exceed the national average of call-handling times and after receiving 110 more calls on Bonfire Night compared to an average day, our call handlers still answered 99% of all 999 and 101 calls within target. Our dispatchers also assisted officers in attending 95.5% of emergencies within 15–20 minutes. This just shows that in your time of need, we will get there as quickly as possible.
“There were a small minority who used it as an opportunity to act inappropriately and try to spoil the activities for others, but where we have had these kinds of issues, we’ve made sure the caller was okay and dealt with the people responsible.
“As a result, we only saw five arrests, eight dispersal orders issued, and seventeen stop and searches conducted by officers for crimes relating to antisocial behaviour during the Topaz period.
“With that said, for the most part it has been an enjoyable #OpTopaz period for our officers and staff this year, and not to wish the time away, but we will now be getting ready to countdown to the #YuletideSeason!”
Discover the magic: Local author unveils captivating feel-good books!
After a fulfilling career as both a district judge and a solicitor, Suzanne Stephenson from Kirton in Lindsey is embracing her true passion: storytelling. She tried her hand at writing at the age of 12, and now in retirement feels a compelling urge to write
From an early age Suzanne had a passion for history, English and art. But in the early 70s, careers advice was pretty onedimensionalwith suggestions like: “Become a teacher”. Defying the norm for the time, Suzanne was drawn into the legal world. In 1974 she set off to central London to study law.
By 1980 Suzanne had qualified as a solicitor. Her career took a significant leap in 2000 when she became a full-time district judge. Some ten years later she traded the courtrooms of London and the South East to move to a farm in North Lincolnshire and sit in Scunthorpe and Grimsby.
Mr Perkins Takes Charge
Retiring at a time of lockdowns she had the time to fulfil her urge to write and also to illustrate. Here are a selection of some of Suzanne’s books.
There cannot be too many books about a moggy working in a lawyer’s office.
When he strolls into Spong, Salter and Tethering Solicitors out of nowhere, he is set to change lives. Is he just a stray or a magical cat, who can gift those around him the changes they deserve? .
The antics of Mr Perkins will amuse and possibly mystify you. As they do everyone who brushes up against a feline of such majestic influence.
A Cat’s Judgement
Suzanne’s second book features the enigmatic Mr. Perkins, a mysterious black cat. Is he just a stray, or is there magic to him?
In this story, Mr. Perkins subtly influences the lives of judges and guests at a bed and breakfast. His secret? Appearing at just the right moment with a soothing purr.
The book touches on themes of pet therapy, pet rescue, British Sign Language, and the importance of embracing differences. It’s a heartwarming read designed to spread a little cheer. Perfect for adults and children aged 10 and up.
The Tale of Philida Thrush
This charming children’s poem explores nature, home, and community, with delightful illustrations that captivate kids aged 7-11.
Perfect for bedtime reading, it’s set in Kirton in Lindsey but resonates with any local village. Inspired by Suzanne’s career, pets, and garden birds, this little book brings everyday magic to life!
Suzanne has authored numerous animal-themed books and a legal satire/romcom. Check out her work on Amazon: www.amazon.co.uk/ s?k=suzanne+stephenson
You can also find her books locally at No 12 Chocolatier, Kirton Lindsey and Jenny’s Cafe, Hibaldstow.

Local Couple lose an incredle 12st 1lb to become their group’s first Slimming World Icons!
Louise Grocock and Steve Seaton from Scunthorpe joined Slimming World in October 2023 following a trip to Blackpool - a year later Louise has lost a staggering 7st 4.5lb and Steve has shed an impressive 4st 10.5lbs
In October 2023, Louise and Steve took a trip to Blackpool. Unhappy with her appearance and overall well-being, Louise made a decisive move. Together, they boldly joined Slimming World, embarking on a transformative journey to better health and confidence.
Louise told Scunthorpe Journal: “I felt so big and couldn’t walk far without getting out of breath. We joined Slimming World as soon as we returned and have never looked back. When we walked into Tina’s group we were made to feel so welcome.
“Over the last year we love staying at group and hearing what people have to say. We now love to cook and really enjoy our Slimming World meals, just like hotpots or pasta bakes.
“Before Steve joined the group, he suffered with high blood pressure and always used his inhaler. But because of losing weight his blood pressure has come down and he has significantly reduced the use of his inhaler, we go to the gym twice a week and love a long walk. We both feel so much healthier and happier.”
Slimming World consultant Tina Andrew told Scunthorpe Journal: “Watching Louise and Steve come so far and completely change their habits over the last year has been amazing. They cook meals together, still enjoy going away and having the odd ice cream or fish and chips and never go hungry. They support each other and everyone else in the group and never miss a session if they can help it. This has led them to become our first ever winners of our newest competition in group - Slimming World Icons 2024.”
Steve and Louise’s remarkable journey isn’t just an inspiration to others; it has sparked a fire in new consultant, Ant. Ant told Scunthorpe Journal: “Witnessing Steve and Louise’s incredible transformation has been nothing short of motivational. The energy of the group has fueled my passion to make a difference. That’s why I’m thrilled to announce the relaunch of the Monday morning group at Sunshine Hall, kicking off at 9:30 AM on January 6th, 2025.”
