We have plenty of offers from local businesses in our area as well as a selection of feel-good stories from the community.

We also talk to former homeless man, Mark Penn, who returned to the streets to highlight the difficulties for others who sleep rough.
Our front cover image was taken by the very talented Tanya Bentley.
As always, if you would like your business to be featured in the magazine or have a story to submit, please get in touch with a member of our fantastic team who will be happy to help.

Goole Youth Action (GYA) is a unique partnership of organisations working for the benefit of young people aged 9-19 years in the Goole area
Goole Youth Action has been running since November 2015 and has brought together organisations from across the public and voluntary youth sectors to strategically plan, coordinate and deliver projects, thus avoiding duplication and directing
limited resources to areas that need it the most.
In November 2019, GYA became a CIO Foundation Charity. Their aims are:
• To enable more positive activity provision to be offered to the young people of Goole.
• To provide a platform for youth-related organisations to
share information and develop new opportunities.
• To enable young people to have their say, when, where, and what kind of activities, they would like to experience in the Goole area.
Goole Youth Action partners include: Revive Church, Goole Town Council, Castaway
Music Theatre, Trinity Church Youth Group, Moorlands Community Charity, Groundworks, Humberside Police, Office of the Police Crime Commissioner, Goole Academy, Humberside Fire & Rescue Service, ERYC’s: Active Communities Regeneration team, , Safer Communities team, Making a Change Team, Early Help Team, Opportunity Goole Team.
Their current projects are:
• In Your Corner - boxingbased project with Goole Amateur Boxing Club and partners.
• Detached Youth Work project across Goole, Old
Goole and surrounding villages.
• Youth Voice Forumproviding a platform for young people to have their say and influence the work and direction of GYA.
• Youth Work Training - two Introduction to Youth Work courses for volunteers.
Over the years they have also delivered:
• Goole Target Youth Project (GTYP) - intensive work with young people over a 18-month period.
• HAF programmes 2020 and 2021.
• Outreach Youth Work across
• Youth Festivals - more specialised and target activities.
• Consultation Eventssurveys of young people views.
• Quality Mark - see earlier section.
• Fresher’s Fair / Open Evenings at Delta Academy - providing year 7s with an opportunity to meet youth providers.
• Negative 2 Positive Outcomes (N2PO) - carrying on the work of Goole Youth Action partners with support from the Humberside Police Crime Commissioner.
Their main funder, The National Lottery, provided a Community Fund award in April 2023 for three years that has enabled GYA to grow and reach more young people in the area.

How businesses can support their staff
“Once an organisation agrees to give an employee volunteering leave, and have completed the ESP registration form, you will become a partner on the scheme, and will receive a Certificate of Participation.”
PERSPECTIVE:
staff to help protect our community
Goole policing team is the bedrock of policing, and it’s made up of PCSOs, volunteers, and of course, Special Constables
How can our local businesses play their part in this too? Special Constables in particular volunteer in their own time, working closely with the neighbourhood policing teams and other teams across our force area to protect and serve the communities in which they both live and work too.
Your staff live and work in those same communities, and we’re sure you have plenty who have a passion for giving something back to make our communities safer and stronger.
That’s where you come in – the National Employer Supported Policing (ESP) programme increases the diversity of knowledge within a workforce, offers a rewarding scheme to participate in, as well as supporting the ethical, social, and community aims of many organisations. Something you might call your corporate social responsibility.
Dedicated to getting more businesses involved in becoming part of the ESP scheme is Community Safety Inspector Mark Lovell. He said: “This ESP scheme is fantastic, and I cannot recommend it
enough to local businesses within our force area.
“The scheme contributes to a safer, more resilient, and empowered society which leads to community wellbeing through volunteers who enhance the connections between all different sectors within our region, as well as promoting active citizenship and engagement within policing.
“Once an organisation agrees to give an employee volunteering leave, and has completed the ESP registration form, you will become a partner on the scheme, and will receive a Certificate of Participation.
“As well as allowing additional paid leave for employees to volunteer as a Special Constable or Police Support Volunteer, organisations can also promote the scheme internally by actively encouraging staff to volunteer in policing and make a real difference in their community.”

48 hours on the streets: champions awareness
Former homeless man, Mark Penn, whose tent was once set on fire by youths, returned to the streets to highlight the difficulties for others who sleep rough
Mark Penn, who now runs the charity Help the Homelezz, returned to the streets in December for 48 hours to raise awareness for homelessness and to raise money for charity.
Mark became homeless in 1996, after struggling through life. His parents seperated, and he had no where to go. He found himself on the streets around Oldham and Manchester.
He was given a golden opportunity by an unknown person, and that helped him get back on his feet.
Mark told Our Goole: It was a long hard road but I made it to where I stand today. Thanks to my wife Jayne and family, friends, supporters and everyone who believes in me.”
The father-of-two returned to the streets in December armed with a rucksack, pillow and a sleeping bag.
Throughout the 48 hours Mark depended on passers-by for simple things like food and drinks. He spent both nights inside a doorway in the precinct, starting at 9.30am on Friday and finished at 9.30am on Sunday.
Mark told Our Goole: “I found it very challenging even though it was just for two nights. How the homeless manage now, night after night, must be terrifying and lonely.
“When I was homeless, I can’t remember it being as bad, apart from once when I got attacked. During this challenge, both nights I was just sat
streets: Local man awareness for homelessness
in a doorway, not even knowing what time it was, having thoughts on how homelessness is horrible.
I had visitors from Goole Town Council who supported me and helped me through the days and nights.
“The biggest challenge was the weather, cold and wet. I was also surrounded by youths but more so because they were curious as to why I was doing it. It could be intimidating for a homeless person as there were more than 15 youths at one point.
“Then I had your locals going out on mad Friday walking past drunk. But no issues really. Goole really supported me.
“I would like to give a big shout out to Barbara and David Jeffreys, our town mayor Anthony Raspin and our councillor Chris Bailey.
“I had Goole Town Council and both Calendar News and Look North, who came to speak to me, along with Viking Radio and the Goole Times.
“Local authorities do not do enough for the homeless rough sleepers. More can be done. The
East Riding of Yorkshire Council has just one outreach organisation that tries to cover the whole of the area.”
Mark founded Help the Homelezz back in 2021, which is a non-funded charitable organisation. Together with their group of volunteers and Morrisons Goole Community Champion Dianne, they drive across the East Riding and Hull in search of rough sleepers so they can provide them with provisions, warm meals and drinks. They now feed anywhere up to 70 people, both on the streets and in hostels.
Help the Homelezz helps with local homelessness, but also with struggling families. They can provide provisions and work alongside other charities.
Mark and his team remain on standby for any calls they receive to go out and help those in need.

This month, local property expert Phil Jones from Link Agency talks to us about the change in the rental market and what that means for you
Goole rental boom
The UK rental market is expected to see moderate growth in 2025, with average rents rising by about 4%.
currently have on the market
Since 2003 when I took over Link Agency I have seen a lot of change in the local rental market.
The rate of change has accelerated in the last five years, with more high-end properties being offered for rent and
more people moving to the area that are willing to pay those prices. There has also been a proliferation of luxury flats in the town of Goole. Old Sidings, The Old Post Office, Carlton Corner and two others being developed in 32-38 Boothferry Road and Harley’s House, to name some of the prominent ones. This is a strong indication that the town is on the up.
