A new, quality butchers has taken over Jackson’s after 130 years handed down through five generations of the family
In January, Slaters Quality Butchers proudly acquired Jackson’s Butchers, bringing you the finest selection of premium meats and handcrafted pies. James Slater, owner, told Tadcaster Echo: “It’s a massive step for me and I certainly have some big shoes to fill by following what Wayne Jackson and family have achieved over the years. I would like to wish him well in his retirement.”
Slaters will continue with the trailers in the villages, with more to be confirmed via Facebook. They offer meat packs, special offers, pies, family packs, winter warmers, stew packs, a hot pie counter and more.
Why not pop down, visit and support James and his team at Slaters Quality Butchers in his new venture.

We find out more about Sherburn and Villages Community Trust
Connecting people, community spaces and services to make Sherburn-inElmet and villages an inclusive and vibrant place to live
In April 2016, a group of local residents created the Sherburn-in-Elmet Community Trust (SIECT) in order to bring together management groups for the Community Library and the Old Girls’ School.
Working together, the charitable trust (Registered Charity No. 1166770) could combine valuable resources and knowledge to allow both community buildings to develop and thrive.
In July 2023, the organisation was re-named ‘Sherburn and Villages Community Trust’ to better reflect their work across a wider geographic area surrounding Sherburn-in-Elmet.
The Old Girls’ School, Library and their community projects will be buzzing with activity
offering something for everyone, including regular wellbeing walks that start at Sherburn Library, regular children’s groups and holiday ‘reading challenges’ at the Library, a warm welcome community pop-up cafe at The Old Girls’ School Community Centre, plus regular community cinema nights there too. I
I addition, lots of keep-fit classes and other groups meet at their venues.
They are also working on an exciting arts project known as ‘Now Then!’ taking place in Sherburn, Tadcaster and Selby which will host a special outdoor event in Eversely Park, Sherburn, in August.
You can take a look at their events calendar at events.sherburninelmet.co.uk/events/ or visit their website savct.uk for more information.

Wetherby charity helps thousands of older people but voices concerns over future
The charity is heralding another huge year in which it interacted with thousands of older people - but warns funding cuts put its vital work at risk
Wetherby in Support of the Elderly (WiSE) had more than 17,000 interactions with older people in 2024.
The charity increased the numbers of people accessing some of its key services - including its popular activities timetable, WiSE Owl Café, grass cutting service, transport scheme and Memory Café.
But the figures coincide with a threatened reduction in WiSE’s council funding, which charity bosses say threaten its ability to help some of the most vulnerable people in the district.
Mark Dobson, Chief Operating Officer at WiSE, said: “We know there is a huge and growing demand for our services and these figures confirm that. My concern is that, with our work so heavily reliant on local authority funding, we simply won’t be able to maintain the same levels of support
as we did in 2024 at a time when isolated older people need our support more than ever.
“For the second time in three years, we face a dramatic cut to our funding which would have a disastrous effect on the work our tiny team of paid staff and army of volunteers delivering for local people.”
A team of more than 120 volunteers provided a massive 6,700 hours of their own time to support the charity’s activities.
Wetherby in Support of the Elderly (WiSE) is a registered charity organisation part funded by Leeds City Council (LCC). Its aim is to improve quality of life for the over 60s by providing community-based activities, information, help and support.
