Issue 014-March 2017

FUNDRAISING FAMILY REFUSE TO LOSE HOPE EVEN IN THE DARKEST OF TIMES Watching a loved one suffer with cancer is a difficult and heart-wrenching experience, but for many families, including the Gardhams from Newport, it is a reality they are having to face every day. Matthew Gardham, 34, and his wife Dawn, 30, live in Newport with their five children; Chloe, 9, Kelsie and Jake, 7, Billy, 5, and Joshua, 4. Back in 2015, Matthew lost a lot of weight and started suffering with night sweats and chest pain. When he went to the doctors, he was told his health problems were most likely due to him being a smoker and was sent away with patches to help him stop. A few weeks later, Matthew was no better and visited the doctors again - this time he was told he was suffering with depression and anxiety, but the family were convinced this wasn’t the case. In March 2016, Matthew was rushed in an ambulance to Doncaster Infirmary where the family were told that he had a very rare and aggressive mediastinal yolk sac germ cell tumour in his chest. The tumour had taken over his right lung and began crushing his heart and other vital organs. Dawn told Our Goole: ‘When we found out what was wrong with Matt, it felt like our entire world was falling down.’ Straight after his diagnosis, Matthew began four months of intense chemotherapy at St

James Hospital in Leeds. On August 1, 2016, Matthew had a successful major operation to remove the tumour wrapping around his heart and lungs. However, just five weeks later, the family were given the devastating news that the cancer had returned and had spread to Matthew’s liver. Once again, fight was on for the father of five, and Matthew had to undergo another four months of chemotherapy.

WHAT ARE YOU SUPPOSED TO SAY WHEN YOUR KIDS ARE SCREAMING THAT THEY DON’T WANT THEIR DADDY TO DIE Dawn told us: ‘We have stayed as strong as possible throughout Matthew’s illness for the sake of the children.’ Matthew had more chemotherapy after Christmas in an attempt to keep the cancer at bay while doctors got everything in place for a high dose one month isolation chemotherapy. However Matthew, along with his consultant, made the difficult decision that it was best to stop all treatment due to the emotional and physical effects it was having on him. Doctors have told the family that

the high dose of chemotherapy is no longer an option. Dawn told us: ‘Explaining this to the kids was heartbreaking. What are you supposed to say when your kids are screaming that they don’t want their daddy to die and you can’t do anything to stop it? ‘It’s been difficult having five children to think of, so I’d like to say a huge thank-you to my mum, Carol Petch. ‘She’s helped us all from the very start and has been our rockwithout her, things would have been much harder. Matthew and I would like her to know how much we love her and that we really can’t thank her enough.’ Last year, Dawn and Matthew raised almost £5,000 for Yorkshire Cancer Research by organising a fun day in Newport. They are currently organising a second fun day in order to keep busy and raise much needed funds to help find more cures for rare cancers such as Matthew’s. It will be held on Saturday, August 5 from 12pm at The Crown and Anchor in Newport. To donate any raffle prizes, sponsor the event, help out on the day or anything else call or text Dawn on 07519966468. Donate to the fun day for Yorkshire Cancer Research by visiting www.justgiving. com/Dawn-Gardham or alternatively you can donate directly to the Gardham family by visiting www.gofundme. com/2sb5vw2s 7

Issue 014-March 2017

Children in care benefit from strong council services The lives of vulnerable children in Goole and the surrounding areas are being improved thanks to ‘good quality, well co-ordinated support’ from East Riding of Yorkshire Council Inspectors from Ofsted praised social workers and practitioners for their work in supporting local children and their families, judging the council’s services for vulnerable children as ‘good’ overall with ‘outstanding’ features.

According to inspectors, 12 percent of the area’s children live in poverty, and are also looked after to different degrees by the authority. East Riding Council also operates two children’s homes – rated good or outstanding in their latest inspections.

The Ofsted ratings place the East Riding in the top 10 percent of local authorities and safeguarding boards inspected to date.

The report said: ‘Children who need help and protection in the East Riding receive services that reduce risk effectively and improve their welfare.’

Services for young people leaving care are described as ‘outstanding’ while those for children who need help and protection, the experiences and progress of looked-after children, adoption and leadership are all ranked as ‘good’.

Councillor Julie Abraham, the council’s portfolio holder for children, young people and education, told us: ‘Safeguarding our children and ensuring good development while they are in our care is the most important thing that we do.

To date, only five other local authorities have been judged to provide outstanding services for young people leaving care.

‘We’ll continue to learn and develop our services with our partners to ensure that they remain relevant and responsive to the changing demands of modern life.’

We can work to every budget - from £3.99 per sq. mt.

FROM A POLICE A closer look at vehicle security This month, Sgt David Lonsdale wants to ensure you know how to keep your cars and vans as secure as possible to try and avoid being a victim of crime

‘It is clear that offenders are looking at locations and vehicles prior to coming back to commit the crimes’

10

Issue 014-March 2017

E PERSPECTIVE: Recently there have been several incidents of cars and vans being broken into in the Goole area, down Adeline Street, Manor Road, Sotherton Street and Lime Tree Avenue to name a few.

Crimes in your area

In many cases tools were stolen out of the vans, so we thought we’d share some simple security measures that can be taken to help protect you and your livelihood.

It’s important to be aware of crime that occurs in your local area so we make sure we fill you in each issue. Becoming more aware can help prevent further crimes of a similar nature occurring.

1. Keep your car keys safe and out of sight, don’t leave them near an open window and if you are at work then ensure that you keep your keys with you at all times. 2. Never hang them near to doors where they could be taken through a letterbox. 3. Never leave house or car keys in an obvious place like a handbag or key cupboard. 4. If you’ve got a garage, use it and lock it. 5. Always keep your vehicle’s windows closed and the car locked. 6. If your car/van doesn’t have an alarm/immobiliser then consider getting one fitted. 7. Consider extra security such as a steering wheel lock. (Steering locks and gear level locks are often all that is needed to deter a thief as they simply don’t want the hassle of breaking in and trying to get them undone.) 8. Never leave any property or personal documentation in your car or van on display, i.e. on car seats, in the footwells or half hidden under a seat - it only takes a criminal seconds to smash a window and grab something. It is clear that offenders are looking at locations and vehicles prior to coming back to commit the crimes. This could simply be someone looking around an area during the day, someone pretending to do door to door sales, someone coming to your home on another pretext or it could be that you keep seeing a suspicious vehicle driving around. If you have any concerns or want to report a suspicious vehicle then contact us by calling the Non Emergency number 101 or 999 in an emergency, or if a crime is occurring.

• A secure van was broken into and power tools stolen. • A secure van was damaged in an attempted break in. • The front and rear number plates of a vehicle were stolen. • A greenhouse was damaged as the result of stones been thrown at it. • Entry was gained into a van but it would appear nothing was taken. • A van was broken into and tools stolen. • A van was damaged, entry gained but nothing was taken as the van had been left empty. • Tools were stolen from a secure van. • A window of a shed in a rear garden was damaged but no entry was gained.

Local ramblers committed to main The health benefits of walking are well documented, and one group of people who need no convincing of its many advantages are the Howden & Goole Ramblers. Not only do they walk to maintain good physical and mental health, but the Howden & Goole Ramblers are also passionate about safeguarding the beauty of our local countryside. The Howden & Goole Ramblers currently have 69 members and they are one of eight groups which make up the East Yorkshire & Derwent area of the Ramblers Association. Marian Thomas is secretary of the group, and plays an important role in planning the walking schedule. She told Our Goole: ‘We are not just a walking group, we are guardians of our walking environment and work locally with the help of local councils and volunteers to unblock and protect paths and our rights of way network.’

Last summer for example, a member of the public complained about path conditions on parts of the Howdenshire Way, which was created in 1989 as a 16-mile recreational walk, connecting several Howden villages. East Riding of Yorkshire Council asked local ramblers if they would survey it and suggest improvement actions. This was promptly done, resulting in thirtyfive remedial actions, all completed within a week, including installing or resetting 18 posts in one day. There is a regular programme of scheduled walks, including a route following the River Aire from Snaith to Gowdall on Sunday, April 9 and walking part of the Wilberforce Way from Pocklington on Sunday, April 22. There is also a programme of summer evening walks in the pipeline. Ivan’s incredible challenge is complete! Did you read about ‘Iron-man’ Ivan’s incredible 53/53 challenge in the last issue of Our Goole? We’re pleased to tell you that he’s completed the year-long series of fundraising events and has passed his £5,300 target Ivan Down, 53, a fitness co-ordinator, completed 53 physical challenges in 53 weeks in his 53rd year, and has raised almost £6,000 for the following charities: Bowel Cancer UK, Stroke Association, Scope, British Lung Foundation and The Army Benevolent Fund. The statistics of the challenge are incredible. Ivan ran 568.9 miles (35 miles of that carrying loads between 25-53kg), rode a bike 1343.9 miles, swam 9.8 miles, rowed 29.8 miles, completed 16,968 step ups, 10,000 repetitions with a 10kg kettle bell, 10,000 reps with a 12kg barbell, 2000 sit-ups and 1000 press-ups. He completed 228 hours and 18 minutes of exercise in total. Ivan’s Just Giving page has passed its £5,300 target, after a final raffle at East Riding Leisure Francis Scaife, but is still open for donations. In addition, sponsor forms currently take his total close to £6,000.

Ivan told us: ‘I would just like to thank everybody who has contributed to this amazing total. It’s been a very tough challenge at times, but well worth it in the end, and I am delighted to be able to pass on so much to these worthy causes.’ Darren Jackson, senior facility manager at East Riding Leisure Francis Scaife where Ivan works as a fitness co-ordinator, said: ‘Ivan’s effort and commitment was inspirational to both customers and staff. His desire to raise so much money for charity and good causes has created an incredible feel good factor here at East Riding Leisure Francis Scaife. Well done!’ Ivan is a former physical training instructor in the British Army and set himself the fundraising challenge because he wanted to push himself further after completing previous charity events. Easter

Our Goole is brought to you by CreateTVT. Call 01405 819141.

Spring

into

with a range of events in Goole However you’re thinking about spending the long Easter weekend, you won’t be disappointed with the range of events that Goole has to offer Whether you’re looking for something to do with the kids, or feel in the mood for a visit to the theatre, there is something for everyone in Goole this Easter.

For motorbike enthusiasts, Easter Sunday will also play host to the bi-annual Motorbike Show at the Waterways Museum, where a variety of classic bikes will be on show.

The Mayor’s Concert at Junction on Saturday, April 8 features musical entertainment by local performers in aid of the Mayor’s chosen charity, which this year is Castaway Goole Music Theatre. The concert starts at 7.30pm and tickets cost £6.

The Waterways Museum is also catering for younger ones with an Arts and Crafts Day for children aged eight-12 on Thursday, April 13, with a second session on Thursday, April 20.

If you’re looking for a fun-filled family day out on Easter Sunday, then look no further than West Park, which will hold its Easter Fun Day on Sunday 9 April. Activities will include a Wonder Wheels Workshop, where visitors can have a go on all kinds of wacky bicycles, unicycles, Penny Farthings and bendy bikes. There will also be a traditional Easter Egg Hunt, with proceeds going towards Friends of West Park, as well as a Circus workshop and a Scrapstore workshop where children can make their own Easter Egg hats to take away with them.

22

Later in the month, the National Theatre Live comes to the Junction with a showing of Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead (12A). Harry Potter’s Daniel Radcliffe stars in Tom Stoppard’s funny sitcom, which will be broadcast live from The Old Vic Theatre in London. The performance comes to Junction on Thursday 20 April at 7pm, and it marks the 50th anniversary of the play that made a young Tom Stoppard’s name overnight. Tickets cost £11. After all the Easter festivities are over and you’ve perhaps indulged in one too many chocolate eggs, don’t forget about Goole parkrun, which takes place every Saturday at 9am in West Park. It’s a 5k run and it’s free to enter – just register first at www.parkrun. org.uk

DISCOVER PEACE AN EASTRINGTON POND

24

Issue 014-March 2017

ND TRANQUILITY AT DS There are a number of beauty spots in our local area that sometimes go unnoticed, but this issue we are focusing on one in particularEastrington Ponds. As we move into spring and the temperature begins to rise, we can once again begin to explore the wonderful outdoors that encompasses Goole and its surrounding areas. Eastrington Ponds is a 23-acre nature reserve featuring a large fishing pond, several smaller wildlife ponds, a tree-lined disused railway line and a small meadow. Wildlife is left undisturbed in a series of borrow pits that provide valuable wetland areas. The area was declared a Local Nature Reserve in 2002 in recognition of its wildlife value and its importance to the local community. The reserve provides a variety of rich wildlife habitats and is a quiet, tranquil place that encourages you to relax and connect with nature. The large pond is a safe home for the rare and protected water voles as well as being a popular fishing spot. Wildfowl can be seen on the pond throughout the year with the rafts floating in the centre of the pond used by roosting ducks and geese. Big, old willow trees along the old Hull to Barnsley railway line are a brilliant home for birds and bats, and Britain’s smallest mammal, the

harvest mouse, lives peacefully in the small meadow. Deers, squirrels and hedgehogs can also be found. Wild flowers are encouraged and several species of orchid, including common spotted orchid, twayblade and bee orchids have been recorded on the reserve. Eastrington Ponds is highly accessible, with a good sized car park and an access for all route around the main pond. The reserve boasts three picnic areas and has seats approximately every 100 metres along the paths, so there are plenty of places to take a break. You can choose a short walk of under 1km around the pond which passes the busy bird feeding station or alternatively follow a 2km trail that leads along the old railway line. So if we are graced with a sunny day this month, you might not have to travel too far to spend it somewhere picturesque. Why don’t you spend it discovering Eastrington Ponds? Without a doubt, the nature reserve is one of Goole’s prettiest hidden gems. Background photo-Paul Harrop. Inset photos-Paul Glazzard. All licensed under CC BY-SA 2.0 25

Are you quite happy just ticking over? No? Well then, you will probably be looking for ways to develop your business. Business Support Specialist Heidi Green gives us her top tips

Top tips for developing your own business 1. Review your business plan, this will enable you to measure your progress and ensure your strategy is still current. Think about your goals for this time next year and how you will get there. 2. Are your products and services still attractive to your customers? Has new competition come into the market place that is leaving you behind? Remember, market research is continuous - just by speaking to

your current customers you can gain a lot of valuable information. 3. Keep an eye on your cash flow and ensure your projections are realistic. Are there any potential problems on the horizon? If so, deal with them now. 4. Can you extend the range of products or services you offer? Customers buy from you because they recognise you offer good value so build on that - it’s cheaper than finding new customers.

Issue 014-March 2017 5. However, do not rely too much on your existing customers, you still have to find new ones to spread the risk. Set targets and monitor the progress. 6. Use social media to keep yourself in your customers’ minds. Always include a link to your website and be generous with your knowledge. Interact with people, it could help you attract, engage and retain customers. 7. Keep your thoughts fresh. Joining networks to meet new people and share knowledge can breathe new life into your business and help motivate you. If you find the right group you will leave buzzing with enthusiasm. 8. Don’t try to do everything yourself, outsource some of the work to the experts and save your time to generate income from what you are good at. 9. Developing your business can seem impossible if you lack experience, knowledge or money. Think of engaging a mentor who may be able to help with your business requirements and act as a solid sounding board. Due to government changes we’re set to see an increase in childcare jobs later this year, so if you fancy a career change and want to find out if the childcare industry is the one for you then you’re in the right place.

Could a career in childcare be for you? The Government has extended access to free childcare for working parents which will come into effect from September this year. Along with this great news comes great job opportunities - local analysis has shown that there will be a need for an increase in childcare places and childcare providers in order to meet demand. Fancy a new career? Here are some myth-busting facts about childcare.

MYTH: ‘Childcare is all about looking after babies’ FACT:

Childcare covers a number of different age groups – babies, early years, school age, as well as children with learning or physical disabilities. It is delivered in a range of settings and environments such as day centres, nurseries, children’s centres and your own home (provided you become an approved child-minder).

MYTH: ‘Childcare is not a worthwhile career’

FACT:

Childcare is about helping children reach their potential and supporting them to become sociable and independent. You can gain an enormous sense of personal achievement from knowing that your job is helping people.

MYTH: ‘The pay in childcare is poor’ FACT: The starting salary is between £12,000 and £16,000 P/A. With experience, qualifications and extra responsibilities it can rise to between £18,000 and £21,000. You’ll be encouraged to develop new skills and gain qualifications that can take you into more senior roles as your experience grows.

MYTH: ‘Employers won’t be interested as I don’t have any relevant qualifications’ FACT:

There are a number of different roles within the early years workforce and different routes into these roles, including, for some careers, training on the job. Job profiles on the National Careers Service website provide details about the qualifications needed to work within the early years.

The Goole Renaissance Partnership with East Riding of Yorkshire Council, The Courtyard, Goole College and Goole Jobcentre are holding a drop in childcare event to enable anyone interested in pursuing a vocation in childcare to talk to experts and gain all the information needed. The event is being held at the Courtyard, Goole, between 11am and 2pm and again between 4pm and 7pm on Tuesday, April 4. 28

Try to ensure the agent is professionally qualified and accredited.

3. Kerb appeal You will never get a second chance to make a first impression. Your front door is generally the first thing the potential buyer will see. 4. Light at the end of the hallway A lack of good quality lighting can cause your home to seem dull and unwelcoming. Lamps and mirrors are always useful additions. 7. Bad neighbours? Noisy neighbours, loud music and football flags hanging out of windows are off-putting. Attempt to schedule viewings when you know neighbours aren’t around.

Business of the

month

Meet the hardworking husband and wife team offering a bespoke service for kitchens and bedrooms

Owners of Dream Doors in Brigg, Nick and Sandy Martin, are shining examples that running a business with your spouse can not only work, but be a huge success! Nick, can you tell us a bit about the roles you and Sandy have within Dream Doors? We are a husband and wife team with different roles within the company. I visit customers to show them sample doors and worktops in their own kitchen or bedroom and look after sales whereas Sandy looks after the showroom and the ordering and organises the fitting. Can you tell us about the services Dream Doors offer? We offer a bespoke service for kitchens and bedrooms — this can be anything from just changing doors to refresh a kitchen to a complete redesign using our excellent CAD design system. We’re happy to do as much or as little work as the customer wants and we offer free no obligation quotations. The process is collaborative and we try to make it fun. We’re always happy to welcome people to our showroom where they can see the huge choice of doors, worktops, sinks, taps and appliances we have to offer.

32

What makes you stand out from other businesses offering a similar service? Our service is different to other operations in that we have no preconceived ideas about what the solutions are. We are just as happy to do a small refurbishment as we are to redesign a large new kitchen. Each project is personal to us and we care about the customer’s outcome as much as the financial result. We also have the advantage of being a local family-owned company but have the support of a successful franchise organisation with training, systems and business advice. As members of Checkatrade it is vital that the customer’s journey from idea to completion is a positive one, as the reviews are our so important to our business. From a business perspective, how do you find the local area? We are based in the lovely market town of Brigg, giving us quick access to the DN postcode which

is our franchise territory. We have always found that Brigg, Goole and the surrounding areas are all friendly and we have managed to create ties with other local businesses too. What does the future hold for Dream Doors Brigg? Our hopes for Dream Doors Brigg is that the business will continue to grow with more and more customers delighted with their dream kitchen. The customer is at the centre of everything we do. We offer high quality products, a friendly service and excellent value to everyone who visits us. We also have a fantastic team who all work to achieve an outstanding result. Lastly, what are the main benefits you find to advertising in our magazines? Advertising in Our Goole magazine reaches out to a different area of our territory from other larger publications and on a different level and it does generate interest in the business.

SPORTSNEWS Schoolgirl set for judo success Goole Judo Club’s Beth Griffiths, 13, is well on the road to a successful career in judo after ranking number one in Great Britain in the Ippon league rankings Beth competed in two major competitions in the lead up to her impressive ranking being revealed.

Beth ranked at number one in Great Britain.

First, she fought in the under 44kg at the Midland open, held in Walsall. She won enough fights to gain more ranking points and took home the bronze medal.

John Burkill, Senior Coach at Goole Judo Club said: “We’re all really proud of Beth. I actually coached Beth’s dad, Darren, from the age of nine and he was a successful junior, winning five national medals and representing Great Britain abroad in many international competitions.
