Richardson, a well-known local businessman, went to Peter Aarosin, managing director of Danbrit Shipping, in recognition of a distinguished career in shipping and logistics spanning four decades. Now in its eighth year, the annual awards ceremony was, once again, compered by the BBC’s Harry Gration. More than 250 guests enjoyed a three-course meal and entertainment from stand-up comedian Martin Gold before the most eagerly anticipated part of the evening – the presentation of the awards – got under way. Chairman of the Goole and Howdenshire Business Excellence Awards Committee, Garrey Haase, who also addressed guests at the event, said: “We had a record number of entries this year, so the judges had a really tough time whittling them down to produce their shortlist and an even trickier job choosing the winners. “I’d like to congratulate our very deserving winners and also recognise all of the finalists because it’s a huge achievement to be shortlisted.’ And the winners are… Marketing Excellence – sponsored by Filplastic: Saltmarshe Hall Contribution to the Community – sponsored by H. TREE-PLANTING SCHEME FOR GOOLE PARKS Goole Town Councillors are inviting local people to get involved with their park tree-planting scheme and are looking for volunteers from the community to help with the planting and preservation of the area Thanks to funding from the East Riding Windfarm, the council will be planting over a thousand trees across West Park and South Park this month. Project lead, Councillor Malcolm Boatman, said: “We received a grant from wind farms totalling £5,500. I’ve been working with Doug Stewart from Radio Humberside, he wrote the bid for me and we submitted it to Goole Town Council. We are hoping to apply for further grants to extend the project and in years to come it will be a lovely sight. As well as improving the environment, the kids involved will be able to take their own children to see what they had a part in achieving.” “We want the community to become involved

with the project and in the long term are looking for people to become tree wardens to take care of them. We hope that this is the first phase of environmental projects in the parks and hope to build on the success of the scheme in the future.” Planting will take place on Sunday, 11th March in West Park to coincide with Mother’s Day to ‘give something back to Mother Nature’. The public are invited to go along and help between 10.30am and 4pm and then planting will begin on Monday 13th at South Park in Old Goole with the help of pupils from Marshlands Primary School and the public are invited to join again. An area in both parks has been earmarked for the trees. 9

Shed and gar This month, Sgt David Lonsdale talks to us about keeping your property safe as the evenings become lighter

“Opportunist criminals are always on the lookout for bikes, tools, sports equipment and fishing tackle in sheds and garages, as well as in gardens

Issue 026-March 2018

E PERSPECTIVE:

rden security “Lighter nights often mean criminals are on the prowl for easy pickings from gardens, sheds and garages. As the weather starts to warm up, we all spend more time outside, but we also get a bit lax about leaving our property lying around and locking sheds and garages when we use them.

are covered in the event of a break-in.

For reference, record a description and add photographs of your cycles, golf clubs, fishing equipment, tools and any other valuable property free on www.immobilise.com .

Opportunist criminals are always on the lookout for bikes, tools, sports equipment and fishing tackle in sheds and garages, as well as in gardens. So if you haven’t assessed your security for some time then we would urge you to look at your sheds, garages and outbuildings and see how secure they really are.”

Consider marking your items using a visible permanent marker (eg waterproof paint, engraving or permanent marker pen) or an invisible marker (UV pens etc). It is recommended that you put your postcode prefixed with the number of your address, this allows any recovered stolen goods to be identified and returned to the owner.

Below are some areas to consider: •

Check there are no bins, composters or trees that can be used for climbing over your garden fence to gain access – consider planting thorny bushes inside the fence to deter entry.

• Do you have security/motion sensor lights? They can be a great deterrent if your home or garden is secluded from street lighting. • Check your home contents policy to see if you

• If you have an expensive bicycle or motorbike, make sure you have a good quality lock securing it when it is not being used.

• Loop a strong chain through the handles of your garden tools and connect the ends with a strong padlock. If possible, fix a large metal eyelet to part of the shed frame and loop the chain through it. Alternatively consider installing a lockable storage cupboard within your shed/garage to store valuable items in as this will also form a second line of defence to thieves.

This month, Business Support Specialist Heidi Green discusses joint ventures

Considering a Joint Venture? A joint venture is most commonly used to describe an agreement where two or more businesses create a separate joint venture business, however, any kind of collaborative work with another business could be described as a joint venture too. It is a great chance to use each other’s strengths and compensate for any weaknesses and generally involves sharing resources and risks. The benefit is that whilst entering into a contractual agreement you keep your independence as a business, the

24

collaborative working is over a limited time span. You can of course create a totally separate joint venture company. You need strategy, strong partners, equal contribution and to be able to work well with each other. Issues to consider should include (but not be limited to) how it will be financed and what happens if further funding is needed, how it will be managed, what and how often is information reported, how will profits be shared, who owns any intellectual property, how will disputes be resolved and an exit strategy. Of course there are risks and a number of

Issue 026-March 2018 joint ventures fail as sometimes they cannot integrate operations or working cultures. Communication regarding objectives and during the execution of the contract is essential. As well as your own requirements you will need to consider what your partner will be hoping to achieve from the venture. Strong leadership from the partners from the very start is essential. Seek advice from professionals to make sure you all have a clear understanding of the objectives and who is responsible for what. For help and advice, contact Heidi Green, Senior Business Advisor for Selby District Council via email at hgreen@selby.gov. uk or 01757 292332.

MIKE FISH RESIDENTIAL PROPERTY EXPERT AT HEPTONSTALLS

The costs to consider when buying a house When you buy a new home, there are some upfront fees to think about in addition to your mortgage costs which need to be considered. Stamp duty is one of the main upfront costs if the purchase price of the house is more than £125,000. There will be a valuation fee to pay and your mortgage lender will assess the value of the property to establish how much they are prepared to lend you and the cost could be up to £1,500. A valuation is not a full structural survey so it is advisable that you do get it checked by a surveyor to identify any repairs needed. Surveys can range from a basic home survey costing around £250 to a full structural survey from £600 or more. A solicitor or licensed conveyor is needed to carry out all the legal work and legal fees typically starting at around £450, but this depends on the price of the property. They will also do local searches, which will cost around £150, to check whether there are any local plans or problems. If you are in a chain and are selling a property then you will also have to pay the estate agents fees and once the time comes to move, you need to consider removal costs. If you are looking to buy or sell a house and would like further advice, call Heptonstalls on 0800 9178267 or visit www.heptonstalls.co.uk 25

Disability Confident is a Government-lead scheme that is designed to help businesses to recruit and retain disabled people and people with health conditions for their skills and talent.

Are you a Disability Confident employer? The scheme has been running for several years. It has replaced the ‘Disability Two Ticks’ symbol that employers previously signed up to and used to promote their commitment to employing and retaining individuals with health conditions and/or disabilities Nearly seven million people of working age in the UK are disabled or have a health condition. Historically there has been a significant gap between the proportion of disabled people employed compared with nondisabled people. Encouraging applications from disabled people is good for business. It can help you to: • Increase the number of high quality applicants available. • Create a workforce that reflects the diverse range of customers it serves and the community in which it is based. 34

• Bring additional skills to the business, such as the ability to use British Sign Language (BSL), which could result in large savings. The costs of making reasonable adjustments to accommodate disabled employees are often low. Financial assistance may also be obtained by contacting Access to Work, details of which can be found on www.gov.uk. The benefits of retaining an experienced, skilled employee who has acquired an impairment are usually greater than recruiting and training new staff. It is also good for the individual. Under Disability Confident,

the Government is working with employers to: • Engage and encourage them to become more confident so they employ and retain disabled people and those with long-term health conditions. • Increase understanding of disability and the benefits of employing or retaining disabled people. • Make a substantial contribution to halving the disability employment gap. Find out more about the Disability Confident campaign by visiting www.gov.uk and typing in ‘Disability Confident’.

Goole Viking Striders Goole Viking Striders was originally formed in January 1985 by Anne Sweeney and Bob Todd and was then known as Goole Joggers and Runners Club but soon changed to Goole Viking Striders. The club currently has around 70 members

The runners meet every Wednesday evening at Westfield Banks Sports Complex at 6.30pm and all abilities (over the age of 16) are catered for. Mike Pollard, Striders member, said: “We generally run in small groups of similar abilities and some of us stay for a drink at the bar afterwards. There is absolutely no pressure to run like Mo Farah and we want people to enjoy the sport. The social aspect has always been very important to the Striders and it has been said that we are a running club with a drinking 38

problem! We regularly organise social events for our members. Membership is £35 for the year and that includes membership to UK Athletics and a club vest. We also have a social membership for £20 for those who don’t wish to compete in races but still want to be part of the club.” The club’s Riverbank Challenge will take place on June 3rd, a nine-mile race as well as a 2.5-mile fun run.
