CUDDLY OCTOPUSES HELPING PREMATURE BABIES FEEL SA
Could you get involved with the groundbre Octopus for a Preemie project in Goole? Octopus for a Preemie is a unique project which aims to help premature babies and their families. It started in Denmark but the project has now spread across the globe, eventually finding its way to Goole. Parents are usually unable to hold their premature babies, which is why people have begun to knit and crochet these special octopuses. The babies hold on to the tentacles which are said to mimic the umbilical cord in the mothers womb. Having the tentacles to hold has been shown to significantly reduce the risk of them grabbing and pulling out feeding or breathing tubes, especially
when they can also hear the mother’s voice from outside the incubator. When they are calmer, their oxygen levels significantly improve which helps with their recovery. The aim of the project is for every premature baby to be given an octopus at birth which they can take home with them once they are discharged from hospital as a keepsake. Rachael Jennings, a nurse from Gilberdyke, has set up an Octopus for a Preemie group in Goole in a bid to get more people involved. She told us: ‘There are currently 36 hospitals on the campaign’s list which means that over 1,000 octopuses are required each month. If eventually every hospital in the UK joins the campaign, over 60,000 octopuses will be needed each year. This is a huge task as not everyone who is passionate about the project can crochet or knit, and unfortunately not all octopuses pass through the quality checks.’ Although the quality checks are a crucial part of the project, all octopuses made are used and go to a good cause - even if they are unable to go to a premature baby. Rachael told us: ‘Any of our critters who have fallen short at the quality
6
check stage are passed on to Angel babies to offer comfort to families at a very distressing time, therefore all of our octopuses go to families who need them.’ Rachael has set up two Coffee and Crochet groups, one in Goole and one in Hull, to help people learn how to knit octopuses and to exchange tips and advice. She will bring examples of octopuses who have passed the strict standards and others who have fallen short. Rachael told us: ‘I began crocheting in January this year whilst I was unable to work due to illness. I taught myself using YouTube demonstrations and whilst browsing I came across demonstrations on the octopuses. I googled it to find out more and joined the Facebook group, Octopus for a Preemie UK. There are many people who don’t use social media that want to get involved so I decided to set up the groups.’ All of the octopuses are packaged and sent directly to the hospitals on the group’s list. Anybody who is unable to crochet or knit and is wishing to support in other ways can donate at www.gofundme. com/octopusforapreemie. All donations go towards yarn, packaging and printing.

Those were the best days of my life! Whether you love or loathe school you can’t deny that at some point it played a very big part in your life. A new exhibition at Goole Museum aims to show people that things were not always this way Today children are expected to go to school five days a week and some parents even face penalties for taking their children out of school during term time, however life wasn’t always this way. Education in England was not made compulsory until 1880 and a new exhibition, ‘Best Days of Your Life?’, at Goole Museum is aiming to show people the differences between now and then. The exhibition, which was researched and produced by Goole Museum volunteers, shows us what education was available to the public before Goole became a town in 1826. It will also highlight the changes that were made once education became compulsory and the building of Local Authority schools at the start of the 20th century.
8
Curator Debbie Hardy told us: ‘The volunteers have done a great job putting this exhibition together. We have set up an area to look and feel like a Victorian school. Why not come along and dress up as a Victorian scholar and try your skills at copperplate hand-writing using a slate? ‘You can also fill in a report card and tell us all about your best - or worst - memories of your school days. Or see if you can spot somebody you know in the photograph albums!’ As well as photographs from Goole Grammar school there are many other objects around the museum to view, as well as some interesting loaned items. The exhibition is on until Saturday, June 10. With free admission and lift access you have no excuses not to come and have a look around.

FROM A POLICE
Not sure? – Don’t open the door!
This month, Sgt David Lonsdale helps you get to grips with distraction burglary in your area
“Doorstep crime isn’t common, but it can have a long-lasting impact on victims’ lives”
10
Issue 016-May 2017
E PERSPECTIVE: A distraction burglar is someone who gains access to your property by distracting or tricking their way in to steal cash or valuables. This could include people who are trying to sell items on your doorstep or those who claim to be representing a company or charity in order to gain entry and steal items whist the occupants are distracted. When someone calls at your door follow these simple steps to help protect yourself and your home. • Keep your front and back doors locked at all times, even when at home. • Before you answer the door, stop and think if you are expecting anyone and ensure that no rear/side doors and windows have been left unsecured. It may be that the caller is trying to distract you while someone else sneaks in. • If you decide to open the door, put the door chain or bar on first and keep it on while you are talking to the person on the doorstep. Some bogus callers call on older and vulnerable people saying they need help urgently. They may ask you to help them outside the house or ask to come in to make a phone call or have a glass of water. Only go to help them if you have someone else with you. Don’t worry if you choose not to help, it is not rude or unfriendly. • If someone who looks official calls at your door, always ask for and carefully check their identity card, even if they have a prearranged appointment (all genuine callers will carry one). Do they look like the person on the card? Is the name the same one as that on your letter? Close the door while you do this. If you are not expecting them and they have not shown you an identity card, do not let them in until you have checked that the caller is genuine. If you are going to ring the company the caller claims to be from, don’t rely on a number provided by them, you could be ringing an accomplice sat in the van outside - you can normally find a contact number on your utility bill or from the telephone directory. • If you think the caller is genuine, but you would rather have a friend or relative with you, ask the caller to rearrange to a time when you are not on your own. Don’t agree to any work or sign anything on the spot. Do not be pressured into having any work carried out. Never pay cash up front and never go to the bank or cash point with a trader. Doorstep crime isn’t common, but it can have a long-lasting impact on victims’ lives. Remember if you’re not sure of a caller, don’t open the door – but do give us a ring. You can call us on 101 but please always call 999 in an emergency or if you suspect a crime is in progress.
Crimes in your area • An unsecured cycle was stolen from a garden in Goole. • A car lock was damaged in an attempted break in. •
A summer house in a garden in Goole was damaged in an attempted break in.
• Approx. 400 litres of diesel were siphoned from a lorry. • A secure scooter was stolen. • A van was broken into and various tools stolen from it. • A secure bicycle was stolen from the front garden of a property. • A rear windscreen of a car was damaged. • A secure outhouse in Goole was broken into, searched and items stolen. • Front and rear number plates were stolen from a car in Goole. •
Entry was gained into a secure rear garden and various vehicle parts and scrap metal were stolen.

The Spirit of Goole – Flying to Success The Spirit of Goole (TSOG) are back and looking to reach for more success by breaking the world record for the most airfields visited in 24 hours by a fixed wing aircraft Their world record attempt has been named as The Grand Tour and is commencing on Saturday, June 24. The current world record stands at 68 airfields visited in a day, TSOG are aiming to visit at 72 aircrafts and maybe more if the weather is on their side. One of TSOG’S pilots, Chris Milnes or Andy Pearson, will be flying the aircraft and depending on the rules set by Guinness World Records they are hoping to have some of their younger members in the front seat. Jack Milnes, chairman of TSOG, said: ‘It is a relatively simple record to set, and as the route, although long at 400nm, is achievable with some time to spare. Flight rules stipulate that daylight is 30 minutes before sunrise and 30 minutes after. On 24 June sunrise is 4:30am and sunset is 9:35pm, which gives us the

window of 04:00am to 10:05pm to complete the challenge.’ Along the route there will be eight different refuelling points, each with a 30 minute stop. The TSOG ground crew will relocate to each fuelling point to support the aircrew. Jack is also hoping to see some of their supporters at the points. TSOG are hoping to raise money for the Youth Aviation Centre, which is planned to be the first of its kind in the UK. It will help underprivileged young people gain a start to a career in aviation. They are hoping to raise £850,000 for the purchase and infrastructure improvements. Any donations can be made at www.mydonate.bt.com/donation/ donate.html?charity=thespiritofgoole

Issue 016-May 2017 Justine Dixon, Founder of Hook Gardening Club, told us: ‘Hook is such a lovely old village with a lot of history and our event gives the village a real buzz and brings the people who live here together. The pubs and shops in the village are very supportive and display posters of the event for us. ‘Lots of community groups use the Hook Memorial Hall every month and if you see bunting flapping outside it usually means there is a fundraising event happening inside so please call in a support it.’ On the day of the event there will also be plants and cake stalls in gardens, cream teas and light refreshments. Hook school children have also written a selection of poems which will be available to read at the Memorial Hall. Free parking is available opposite Hook Church, where they can then make their way to Hook Memorial Hall. Admission is £3.50 per adult and free to all children. The last Hook Open Gardens event in 2015 welcomed 250 visitors and raised £1000 on the day. So why not come along and see if you’re able to help raise even more money this year? For more information or if you would like to volunteer please contact Justine on 01405 769725 or 07743 460357.

Exploring Howden’s A heritage centre in Howden has been opened to showcase the story of the town and to celebrate its long and varied history For many years, residents of Howden have harboured a wish to open a Heritage Centre in the town. In 2016, a small group made up of three members of the Howden Civic Society, a representative of Howden Town Council and a local historian, decided to pursue the town’s ambition. Philip Mepham, Chairman of Howden Civic Society told Our Goole: ‘Our first priority was to determine whether there was public support - thankfully three days of public consultations resulted in over 200 expressions of support which we were thrilled about.’ 20
A successful bid was made to the Celebrate Big Lottery Fund for £10,000 and a further bid for £1,650 was approved by Howden Town Council for an Oral History Project. With the financial back up in place, the group began searching for a suitable site. The old HSBC bank which had been vacant for some time appeared to be the best option. It was being developed into flats and a commercial unit, which was offered by the developer at a very good rate for the rest of 2017. The developer carried out an extensive refurbishment project and the Civic Society planned how the centre would run and look.
The centre was officially opened on Friday, April 14 2017 by Councillor Catherine Fox, Vice Chairman of East Riding of Yorkshire Council. Philip told us: ‘The Civic Society recognised that Howden has a long and varied history which has shaped the town and surrounding area, but that much of that information was held by individuals. There was nowhere someone could go to study or see the culture and history of the area. The Heritage Centre provides that access and will also be the base for websites and other social media for 24/7 access.’ Current displays in the centre focus on the Minster, the Horse Fair and
Issue 016-May 2017
s Heritage local pubs and inns alongside a room dedicated to the R100 airship and Barnes Wallis. Temporary exhibits contain information about the junior school’s centenary and the history of bellringing in the Minster. Even the history of the HSBC bank in Howden is illustrated, together with a picture of a Howden £5 note. Display cabinets contain a range of objects leant to the Centre but with a Howden connection. The centre is currently a ‘work in progress’ and will be developing during the summer, eventually containing more information and facilities. In the near future projects are being planned in relation to the collection of Oral Histories and educational projects involving the local schools.
‘It’s important for people to have the opportunity to be aware of Howden’s heritage because it will increase the feeling of wellbeing and pride in the area amongst the community.’ There will be guided walks leaving from the centre in June around the Blue Plaque Trail which will show 25 sites of architectural and social interest. Philip said: ‘I think it’s important for people to have the opportunity to be aware of Howden’s heritage because it will increase the feeling
of wellbeing and pride in the area amongst the community. By attracting visitors to the town we would hope to contribute to the success of local businesses. We hope to create a virtuous circle where people will: understand the heritage of the area and value it; by valuing it they will want to take care of it; caring for it will help people enjoy it; from enjoying comes a thirst to understand and so the circle goes on. The centre is open from 11am to 3pm on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays and on Bank Holiday Mondays. Admission is free and all are welcome. The centre is entirely volunteer led and any donations received are used to improve its collection, its activities and its sustainability.’ 21

This month, Business Support Specialist Heidi Green explains just how important being liked and trusted is when running a business
It’s all about trust There is a saying in networking circles, ‘Know, Like and Trust’ and this is very true. If someone knows you and likes you they will listen to you. However, if they trust you as well they will do business with you and becomes advocates on your behalf, telling everyone how wonderful you are.
But why should someone you have never worked with previously trust you? How are you going to build up that relationship and
22
credibility?
Trust is very hard-earned and it’s not just your customers that need to trust you. Suppliers who maybe offering you credit - will you pay them?; The bank to lend you finance to start or develop your business; employees (although this one is two-way - you need to trust them as well). Sadly everyone is suspicious today so how are you going build up that trust and credibility in your business, your product/ service and yourself? You are the most important here as people buy from people. Storytelling works – take some time to write about the facts that are building up the trust behind these three areas:
Issue 016-May 2017 Your business: How many years have you been delivering the products or services you offer, how many people have you helped, what is the background to your business and who is your target market? Your product/service: Images work wonders here, try before and after pictures and explain to potential customers what the benefits are of using your products/service. Case studies of how you worked with people and the end result, testimonials from clients work wonders. You: Being honest and transparent is the key to building trust. Tell people about yourself and why you are passionate about your business. Trust is what relationships depend on. By doing the above exercise you have built trust generators. Use them at every opportunity. Remember though, honesty is fundamental to business and trust is fragile, it can take years to build and moments to lose. Top reasons for making a Will Making a Will is possibly one of the most important things you can do. Not only will a Will legally protect your spouse or partner, but you can also set out exactly how you would like your assets to be dealt with after your death. Although everyone’s situation can vary, below are the top reasons why we think a Will should be made. Protect your family and minor children You can set out in your Will who should take care of your minor children in the event of your death before they reach 18. By making a Will you are ensuring that the person or people you feel are better suited to look after your children. The process will be faster after your death When making a Will, you set out exactly how your estate is divided and who will deal with this. They can act as soon as you die as your Will gives them the authority to do so. You can set out how your estate will be distributed A Will clearly sets out your wishes as to how you would like your assets dealt with on your death. If you die having not made a Will, your estate is dealt with in accordance with certain rules (called the Rules of Intestacy) and there is no guarantee that your intended wishes will be carried out.
To make a Will or for further information about how Heptonstalls could help you, please call us on 0800 917 8267 or visit www.heptonstalls.co.uk 23

Issue 016-May 2017 housing market, however many private buyers had appeared undeterred prior to the announcement of June’s election but watch this space! The housing market is going through a sluggish period at present and an election will clearly only add to the uncertainty prevalent in the country today.
WE BELIEVE IN QUALITY OVER QUANTITY It’s not only wine merchants that stock great quality wine
Homeowners considering a move have traditionally not been put off by such surprise snap elections, however they may decide to defer their plans for a short time. The period of indecision will be ongoing until the election in June - thankfully this is a relatively short period. Inevitably, a lot of decision-making will be put on hold - particularly as the polls fluctuate. That decision-making without a doubt will include the decision to buy and sell property which will in turn slow down the housing market. The housing market in general does require support from the Government. I feel that the provision of affordable and good quality social housing is a right everyone in our society should have.

Business of the
month
Store manager, Ian Beaumont, is determined to provide customers at Junction 37 Filling Station with a unique shopping experience
The petrol station and convenience store in Howden prides itself on the often quirky and primarily locally sourced products that line its shelves Can you tell us about the services Junction 37 Filling Station offers? Ultimately, we are a petrol station and convenience store however we aim to be a bit different. The shop was founded on May 14, 1930 and since then we’ve tried to provide our customers with varied and interesting stock and a friendly service. What makes you stand out from other businesses offering similar services? As a true independent we offer a range that others cannot match. It would be simple to to sign up to a brand name supplier but we feel that would restrict choice and our ability to constantly source new products. Our biggest problem is where to put all the new items we find. Some garages have numerous rows of the same items but as we have such a vast range we often struggle for space.
28
Do you have any interesting facts about your shop? Our Christmas prize draws generate quite a bit of interest – we have done competitions to win meals and overnight stays at Michelin star restaurants. Last Christmas we offered a prize of a helicopter trip for two and afternoon tea at the Devonshire Arms county house hotel. Our competitions are free to enter and we are often asked what’s the catch but quite simply, there isn’t one! We just want to get more people to walk through our doors. From a business perspective, how do you find the local area? As an independent we try always try to support other local businesses. We stock pies from Bubwith and Huddersfield, the quality hot drinks machine is from a Selby company, our fantastic range of cakes are from Huddersfield as are our car care products. Sandwiches are from
Leeds and newspapers are from Hook. It’s great to see businesses supporting each other and that’s the great thing about this area. What does the future hold for your business? We’re really grateful that we are getting busier all the time. When people come and have a look for the first time many have commented that they didn’t know we offered such a vast range of products at such low prices and they keep coming back. Lastly, what are the main benefits you find to advertising in our magazines? Advertising in Our Goole is really beneficial for us as it means we can specifically target local people with quirky advertisements which generates interest in the store. It’s all about getting people through the door and advertising in this magazine really helps to do that.

FOOTBALL MATCH KYLE AKAM RAISE Every year the Goole National Union of Railwaymen (NUR) football team holds a charity football match in memory of their close friend Kyle Akam, from Goole, who sadly passed away in 2013 at the age of 31 after suffering from Cystic Fibrosis and dying due to pneumonia During the annual memorial charity match, the dedicated players raise money for the Adult Cystic Fibrosis unit at St James’ Hospital, Leeds, where Kyle was treated. The match is billed as the NUR Young Stallions vs the NUR FC Elder Statesmen. ‘Elder Statesmen’ players who were lucky enough to have Kyle as a supporter or manager are invited back to play. This year’s fundraiser, held recently at Victoria Pleasure Grounds in Goole, was the sixth annual fundraiser and the fourth Kyle Akam Memorial. Each member of both teams had to find a personal sponsor for the match, which helped raise even more money. Pete Gregory, an organiser of the event told us: ‘Kyle was a huge supporter of Hull City but was also an avid follower of the NUR FC on a Sunday morning and on the odd occasion when I was unavailable, Kyle would step up to manage the team. ‘Kyle would be in hospital for weeks at a time receiving treatment several times a year so to help out with patient comfort in the unit makes us all immensely proud. ‘We have so far managed to provide each room in the ward with Tassimo coffee machines, crockery, relaxation 34
CDs, adult colouring material and cash donations for furniture and special occasions. ‘We have also managed to provide half of the ward with air conditioning units which are of huge importance to the patients, especially during the summer as it allows them to breathe in cool, clean air. It would be great if we could manage to fill each room.’ Cystic Fibrosis is a condition that effect the lungs and digestive system, and can also effect the pancreas, liver, and kidneys. Kyle suffered a brain haemorrhage and eventually passed away due to pneumonia. Over the years, the event has become so big that it now takes place over two days. After the charity match the members of the team and supporters headed back to the NUR pub, on Carter Street, Goole, where a raffle took place to raise even more money. Prizes such as wine, chocolates and cosmetics were available to be won. Further fundraising also took place at the pub on Sunday, April 16, featuring a popular local band called Sandra’s Wedding. Jamie Ward, a close friend of Kyle, said: ‘Kyle and I met through playing football for the NUR - he was one of the kindest and funniest people I knew.

H IN MEMORY OF ES OVER £4,000
‘I knew the kind of things he had to go through on a daily basis were really tough but he never moaned about it. Kyle got on with his life as though it was normal and he was a real inspiration to me because of that. ‘Doing this event year in year out and the amount of people that help is a testament to Kyle and the amount of hearts and lives he touched.’ A Facebook auction page called ‘The Kyle Akam Charity Auction Page’ was set up where people kindly donate prizes for others to bid for and win - everybody is encouraged to get involved. The NUR have managed to raise over £20,000 over the years, which has helped to make the patients’ lives as comfortable as possible. This year they raised over £4,000.
In its first year, the money raised from the event went toward the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. In the second year of the event, all the money raised was split between the Cystic Fibrosis Trust and the Adult Cystic Fibrosis Unit at St James’ Hospital, Leeds. Since Kyle passed away all money raised has gone solely towards the Adult Cystic Fibrosis Unit. Pete Gregory told us: ‘Without the generosity of local businesses and patrons of the charity events none of this would be possible, so a huge thanks to everyone that has donated.’ To donate or find out about helping next year, contact Pete Gregory by emailing petegregory1983@hotmail.com.
