Cash boost for voluntary youth groups
Our Goole is brought to you by CreateTVT. Call 01405 819141.
Several voluntary youth organisations in the area have received thousands of pounds in grants to support the services they provide
In total, £32,000 was distributed across the region via the Positive Activities Grants scheme run by the East Riding of Yorkshire Youth and Family Support Service, with over £15,000 of it going to groups in Goole and the surrounding area. FROM A POLICE
Shed and gar This month, Sgt Lonsdale tells us about how to protect our sheds and gardens against theft now the lighter nights are here
Opportunist criminals are always on the lookout for bikes, tools, sports equipment and fishing tackle in sheds and garages, as well as in gardens
10
Issue 028-May 2018
E PERSPECTIVE:
rden security As the weather starts to warm up, we all spend more time outside, but we all also get a bit lax about leaving our property around and locking our sheds and garages when we use them. Opportunist criminals are always on the lookout for bikes, tools, sports equipment and fishing tackle in sheds and garages, as well as in gardens. Below are some areas to consider: Make sure your shed or garage is secured with a good quality lock. Keep back gates locked when not used. Check there are no bins, composters or trees that can be used for climbing over your garden fence to gain access – consider planting thorny bushes inside the fence to deter entry. Do you have security/motion sensor lights? They can be a great deterrent if your home or garden is secluded from street lighting. Loop a strong chain through the handles of your garden tools and connect the ends with a strong padlock.
Stop thieves stealing plants by using heavy plant pots which will be less desirable to walk off with. Many shed windows are never used, if this is the case – why not screw them shut? If you have a household alarm consider extending it to cover your outbuildings or fit a bespoke shed/garage alarm. If you have an expensive bicycle or motorbike, make sure you have a good quality lock securing it when it is not being used. For reference, record a description and add photographs of your cycles, golf clubs, fishing equipment, tools and any other valuable property free on www.immobilise.com . Consider marking your property too using a visible permanent marker, for example, waterproof paint, engraving or a permanent marker pen, or if you prefer an invisible marker (UV pens etc). It is recommended that you put your postcode prefixed with the number of your address. This allows any recovered stolen goods to be identified and returned to the owner.

‘Goole in Colour’ at Goole Museum A new exhibition shows old photographs of Goole restored and in colour thanks to the skills of a local photograph restorer Pippa Stainton lives and works in Goole and has a passion for local history, spending many hours researching the history and details in old photographs of the town and surrounding areas. Through her business, Time Travel Restorations, Pippa has extensive photo-editing experience and has sympathetically restored photographs of varying states of disrepair. For the Goole in Colour exhibition Pippa was given access to Goole Museum and the library’s photographic collection and, as a result, has produced some stunning restored and colourised photographs of the town. The photographs take visitors on a journey around the historic town and, unlike the original images, the clarity and restored colour gives the viewer the feeling of going back in time and seeing the town as it really was. Debbie Hardy, Curator at Goole Museum, said: “Painstaking research and detective work worthy of Sherlock Holmes has created not only accurate colours, but also a deeper knowledge of what the photographs actually show. This is a chance to experience time travel – and you only have to visit Goole Museum to do it!” The exhibition runs until June 16th and admission is free. 12
Goole Museum is above Goole Library on Carlisle Street and is open Tuesday to Friday 10am to 5pm, Wednesday 10am to 7pm, Saturday 9am to 4pm. It’s closed for lunch 12 noon to 12.30pm (Wednesdays 1.30 to 2pm). There is lift access up to the museum. For further information about exhibitions and other things happening at Goole Museum and other museums and galleries in the East Riding, visit www.museums.eastriding.gov.uk

Luncheon club launch thanks to grant The Moorlands Community Charity has secured a generous grant of £30,000 from the Anna Maria Charitable Trust to launch a new project, The Luncheon Club, which will complement its meals-on-wheels service
The Luncheon Club is aimed at senior community members who may not have the opportunity to socialise as much as others, and it will be holding weekly luncheons in West Park Café, The Moorlands Centre and Swinefleet Road Community Centre in Old Goole. There will be activities such as a meet and greet, tea dances, painting, cards, dominoes and much more. The charity is also planning to run some day trips throughout the summer months. Customers will receive a meal of the day from the meals-on-wheels menu (£4 for main and £2 for dessert) and hot/cold drinks and biscuits will be served throughout the session free of charge. Goole Go Far will also provide free transport to and from the venues. 16
The new Luncheon Club Coordinator, Sophie Nicholls, said: “This is a welcome addition to the services our charity already offers and will provide social contact for people who may only see our meals-on-wheels delivery driver from one day to the next. We are hoping friendships form and even if it is difficult to get out, friends can contact each over the phone for a chat.” The Luncheon Club is the newest part of the charity’s meals-on-wheels service, which operates seven days a week. There is no age restriction for this service and they are hoping to expand it to Cowick, Snaith, Carlton, Camblesforth and Drax. For further information, contact The Moorlands on 01405 768111 or email meals@moorlandscharity.co.uk

Runner’s Marathon success
Local woman, Amanda Midgley-Bliss, completed the London Marathon last month to raise money for the mental health hospital where she works Amanda, who works at the Retreat Hospital in York, which supports people with mental health needs, completed the marathon in six hours 47 minutes in the blistering heat on April 22nd to raise over £1,000 for the hospital. Amanda said: “I started off well but as I got to mile 13 the water stations started to run out of water and there was no water for three miles. The East End of London really pulled together, they were filling up buckets of water and passing out cups to the runners. After my blip at 13 miles I brought myself round and ploughed on through to the end. “There were so many interesting people running for all kinds of reasons. The weather on the day was scorching though and people were dropping 18
out all over the place through exhaustion. The ambulance crew were so on the ball and were on hand all the way. The reason I carried on and didn’t pull out was because I’m like my mum, who’s a fighter and doesn’t give up. Hopefully, this will be the same attitude my children have. My husband, Ash, has been my biggest support throughout the training and on the day. “He came down to support me with my three daughters. I can’t thank him enough for the encouragement he has given me. I rang him at mile 13 and told him I couldn’t complete it and he was calm and told me I could do it. It was such an amazing feeling getting the medal put around my neck at the finish, I still can’t quite believe I had this golden opportunity, I’ll cherish it forever.”

This month, Business Support Specialist Heidi Green talks about the trouble the high street is facing and why
Trouble on t’high street There are worrying signs on the high street with some big names such as Maplin, Toys R Us, Jamie’s Italian, Debenhams and Prezzo, to name a few, downsizing and giving profit warnings. While retail figures do continue to grow, it is at a much slower rate at only 1.9% in 2017 compared with 4.7% in 2016. This could be partly due to austerity and the decline in disposable incomes. Inflation at around 3% and average wage rises of 2.2% does not help, but also the fact that people now buy online to avoid parking fees, pedestrianisation of town centres and traffic congestion.
24
The way we buy has changed as has our expectation of customer service. While we see more people buying online, it should be taken into consideration that retailers have increasing overheads through business rate increases and the effect of the minimum wage. Here are a few tips to help your retail business survive and hopefully prosper: • Make it easy for people to find you by being on Google Places for Business. • Ensure your staff know about excellent customer service and there is a process for the sales they are looking to make.
Issue 028-May 2018 • Immerse yourself in the community, work with local groups and organisations, a great way to build good PR and raise awareness. • Put yourself in your customers shoes. • Use social media to promote your business and

If the property has wooden window and door frames, look for signs of rot as this can be another costly job to fix. Inside, look out for signs of damp, such as the smell or signs of mould. Poor water pressure is another issue, so run taps upstairs and downstairs and flush the toilet to check the water flow. Don’t be afraid to ask questions such as when any work was done and how old things are like the boiler and heating system. Also check if the property is in a flood zone as buildings insurance for homes that have been flooded is expensive and might be hard to find. If you can’t get insurance you won’t get a mortgage. GOOLE POOL LEAGUE TRIBUTE TO POPULAR LANDLORD The Goole Pool League recently held a knockout to raise funds for a memorial plaque and bench in memory of the former landlord of the Steam Packet, John Bennett The GPL, which was formed in 1976, consists of three divisions of 33 teams. Player Sean Broadhead told us: “John Bennett ran the Steam Packet, the home of the Goole Pool League, and he was also involved with various other pubs over the years, including the Royal Hotel on Aire Street, The Peacock, the Creykes Arms in Rawcliffe and the Ferryboat. All the members 38
of the GPL thought a plaque and a bench would be a fitting way to remember John. The original knockout was held in February and £485 was raised, with £100 given out as prize money and the rest going towards buying the plaque and bench.” The plaque and bench have been placed at the Steam Packet pub on Cheviot Avenue.
