The Our Goole

Christmas T Father Christmas will be leaving piles of presents in the homes of children across the world in just a few weeks, but not all children will wake up to gifts and for some it’s just an another day. Our aim is to ensure as many children as possible in our area receive a gift from Father Christmas.

Lisa Warrener, Director of CreateTVT, which owns Our Goole, says: “Last Christmas our team wanted to do something to make a difference in our community and the help we received from people in donating gifts was phenomenal! We just knew we had to bring it back

this year and help even more children in our area. The thought of children potentially waking up on Christmas morning without a gift to open is heartbreaking.

“The success of last year’s toy appeal shows how generous the people of Goole and surrounding villages are and we hope the same, if not more people will be onboard with us this year helping make Christmas special for disadvantaged children in the area. “Equally, many children would love to be able to give a gift to their parents or carers on Christmas morning and are unable to do so. We are therefore also collecting gifts for children to give their parents. Unwanted gift sets, toiletries or duplicated gifts you have received could be re-homed for children to give to their parents.” The gifts will be wrapped and distributed to relevant families via the local support networks for children in Goole and surrounding villages.

Page 6

Issue 034-November 2018

After the success of last years first Christmas toy appeal, we are back with hope of helping more children in the local area by collecting gifts for those who might not receive one.

Toy Appeal We need all gifts by Friday 14 December so we can wrap and distribute them in time for the big day.

Morrisons, Credit Union and Specsavers are delighted to be involved, helping such a great cause for the families in our area who need a little help this Christmas.

13+ years: Make up and toiletries, hair accessories, clothes, books.

Lisa adds: “We are delighted to make the toy appeal an annual event. So many of our children receive dozens of presents, could you perhaps add one more to your shopping bag for a disadvantaged child?” Drop-off points: Morrisons, 145 Boothferry Road, Goole, DN14 6EN, Hull & East Yorkshire Credit Union, 22 Pasture Road, DN14 6EZ, Specsavers Opticians, 68 Boothferry Road, DN14 5BT

Parents: Toiletries, gift sets. All gifts must be new, unused and unwrapped. If you’d like your place of work to collect gifts for the appeal, please contact us at news@ourgoole. co.uk so we can share your details on our social media channels and website. If you are short on space in your office, we can arrange to collect the gifts from you weekly. If you’d like to make a cash donation please contact us via our Facebook page, Our Goole. Thank you.

FROM A POLICE The rise in poaching offences in Goole This month, Sgt Lonsdale tells us how Goole is a hotspot for poaching and how the police are tackling this

“These offences are having a significant impact on the rural communities and increasing the fear of crime and anti-social behaviour

Page 10

Issue 034-November 2018

E PERSPECTIVE: This time of year we see an increase in offences relating to poaching. Goole and surrounding areas is hit hard by this issue, due to the area being ideal for committing the crime. The ground surrounding Goole is relatively flat and seen as ideal for hare coursing and other offences such as badger baiting and deer poaching. Operation Galileo and Zodiac is a Humberside Police’s response aimed at tackling and reducing the incidents of poaching. These offences are having a significant impact on the rural communities and increasing the fear of crime and anti-social behaviour. Poaching is not just about the inhumane killing of animals, it’s founded on gambling, value of dogs and related criminal activities poaching brings to the area. We will often see those involved in poaching offences connected to other crimes such as thefts, burglaries, dangerous driving etc. We have identified peak days and times that these offences take place. As a result we have dedicated teams dealing with them. We will use a range of powers including arrest, seizure of vehicles and dogs and all equipment, and ultimately prosecution and Criminal Behaviour Orders. These will ban people from returning to the East Riding. If you have any information about ongoing activities, or pre-planned events please call 101.

Samples of crimes dealt with this month in Goole. 1. A male from Old Goole was charged with driving whilst disqualified, using a vehicle without insurance, and using threatening/ abusive behaviour with intent to cause fear of/ provoke unlawful violence. He was remanded to Hull Magistrates court on 8 October. He was already on bail for driving whilst disqualified, and so was remanded to appear at Beverley Magistrates on 10 October for all outstanding offences. 2. A 49-year-old male from Asselby was released on bail on 7 Ocotber, following his arrest for threats to kill the previous day. Further enquiries are being carried out by the officers in the case. He will answer bail on 30 October. 3. We also issued a Community Resolution notice to a 20-year-old male who admitted committing criminal damage by breaking the window of Fat Boys Takeaway on North Street – he is to pay the owner for the repair costs. 4. A 27-year-old male was issued with a Penalty Notice for disorder and a fine, for a Section 5 Public Order offence committed outside Fat Boys Takeaway during the same incident. A third male, arrested for assault during this incident also, was later released from custody with no further action.

Nailympia is one of the most prestigious professional nail competitions in the world. On 30 September and 1 October, Paula travelled to London with a team of nail technicians to enter the competition. Paula told Our Goole: “Twenty one of us decided to enter the competition and be mentored by nail artist Sam Biddle. I cannot thank Sam enough for everything she’s done for me!” After months of sketching ideas, Paula had her nail art creations ready for the international competition. “I didn’t have any expectations, Page 18

I was just thrilled to be at the event. People from all over the world had travelled to be here and everyone’s work was amazing.” Paula entered three categories: Fantasy; Multi Media Box Set & Reality Nail Art which involved showcasing the nail art she had prepared and a live competition. “When the results were announced for the Fantasy category, one of our ladies came second so I was celebrating for her so much that I didn’t realise my name had been called for coming first!” Paula had just enough time to compose herself before her

With regular clients, she loves getting to know each customer and creates unique designs that are personal to them. “I adore my job and all my lovely ladies that come along. Having your nails done can be a treat and an escapism for so many people and I’m here to make people happy and pampered.”

For now, Paula is taking a well-deserved break from competitions, but her achievement has inspired her to enter Nailympia next year in a higher division, as well as other national and regional competitions. “Who would’ve thought a little conversation with a friend about changing careers would result in the life I have now!” Paula encourages people to live life and dream big. “You never know your dreams may just come true… mind did.” To see more of Paula’s designs, visit ‘Eva Grace Lounge’ on Facebook.

people’s mistakes will help you identify what does and doesn’t work.

What’s stopping you taking that leap of faith? Stop making the regular excuses, money, time, responsibility, fear of failure and think, do you want to make your dreams a reality?

Follow the KISS rule, Keep It Simple and Straightforward. Building your business organically is better than going in with something that confuses the market, you can always add things on as you develop the business. After all when you start out all you need to do is keep your promise to your customer and hopefully exceed their expectations.

Yes, it’s scary but if you really want to start a business, you need to stop telling yourself why you think you can’t. Start finding solutions to your problems! Listen to others and write things down. Encourage honesty, and learning from others

Life Interest Trusts A Life Interest Trust is an arrangement that is used to preserve your assets for the next generation whilst also providing for someone in the present. Typically these are set up for instances such as a second marriage, as this would enable you to provide for your new spouse on your death but ultimately pass your assets to your own children. The beneficiary is what’s known as the life tenant of the trust and has a right to the asset in the trust for the duration of their life, as well as any income from the trust. Most commonly the main asset is a house, so a trust enables a spouse to remain living in the property until their death, after which point the beneficiaries of your share of the property will be eligible for their share. According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS) around 42% of marriages end in divorce. With those figures in mind, a Life Interest Trust is especially useful as it ensures your children are protected in the event of your spouse remarrying. This is a common concern for clients as they are worried that the spouse from the second marriage may encourage the will to be changed. A Life Interest Trust protects from such a situation arising. For further advice or support with this and any other matters, contact Heptonstalls on 0800 917 8267 or visit www.heptonstalls.co.uk

Property expert David Leake of Housesetc tells us about the Government’s long overdue plans to improve the professionalism of estate agents

About time!

The UK government says a new working group has eight months to consider greater regulation of agents, setting minimum levels of qualification for staff, a Code of Practice and an independent regulator for sales, letting and managing agents.

Housing Minster, Heather Wheeler, says: “For too long, people have faced incurring fees and bad service from a number of property agents. People should have confidence when buying, selling or renting a home.” This long overdue news will be welcomed by

all serious professionals working in the UK property market.

Many agents around the country are working hard every day, performing an essential role in the property market, but a small number of shoddy operators damage the reputation of the industry. The majority of our team at Housesetc are “National Federation of Property Professionals” trained and qualified. Awareness is key, and the Government has a task on its hands to raise this awareness.

Last month we had the first instalment of a series of questions commonly asked by employers at Universal Credit events. We carry on this month with more questions that regularly get asked

Universal Credit: questions & answers part two How will Universal Credit be paid to claimants? In most cases Universal Credit is a single, monthly payment which is paid in arrears into the claimant’s account. Couples living in the same household receive one monthly payment between them. Payments include eligible housing costs and households are responsible for managing their own rent payments.

themselves. How long will someone have to wait for their benefit if their earnings change? Universal Credit is paid monthly in arrears and is designed to automatically adjust depending on the amount someone earns in that time. If earnings reduce in their assessment period then payments will be higher.

What happens when someone on Universal Credit starts work?

If earnings increase, payment will be reduced to reflect the higher earnings.

They must inform DWP who records this, then the PAYE sends automatically as soon as it is received from the claimant’s employer.

How does Universal Credit operate when someone works irregular hours?

People with more than one job don’t normally need to inform DWP as the information comes through automatically. Self-employed workers need to report their earnings Page 30

Universal Credit deals with changes in earnings and irregular earnings. It will not end when earnings increase, unless earnings are high enough to leave Universal Credit altogether. PAYE information from

the employer means that Universal Credit payments adjust automatically. How does Universal Credit work alongside Autoenrolment? Auto enrolment into a Workplace Pension isn’t linked to Universal Credit. What tax code should we put Universal Credit claimants on? Universal Credit claimants should use their existing tax code. How does Universal Credit work with benefits in kind? Universal Credit won’t initially take ‘benefits in kind’ (employee benefits that do not take the form of money) into account. THE HOMECRAFTS GOOLE SPRINT TRIATHLON 2018 On 7 October 2018, athletes (professional or not!) got their running trainers out to take part in this year’s pool sprint triathlon at Goole Leisure Centre

The event saw over 200 competitors swim 400m, cycle 20km and finally run 5k, cheered on by family and friends.

group and Steven Dews landed a men’s podium place coming second in the event overall just 0.3 seconds behind the leader.

One club that took part in the triathlon was Swans Tri Club, a club from Selby that was only launched in October this year. Susie Foster, a GP in the local area formed the group to encourage others to get more active.

Susie continues: “My 15-year-old daughter Lucy and I competed together. She beat me of course!

Susie says: “I was very sedentary till a friend got me hooked on triathlons in 2013 and I’ve competed at Goole Triathlon the last five years in a row.” Six members of her team completed the triathlon, four were new to the Goole Triathlon. Head coach Sarah Weston came first in her age Page 34

“It’s always an excellent event, friendly, well run and perfect for first timers to the sport. It’s great to support local events and it was brilliant to see so many local clubs there.” For more information on the Homecrafts Goole Triathlon and how to enter next year’s, visit https://www.riderhq.com/events/ 83013/homecrafts-goole-triathlon-2019
