INTRODUCTION Hello and welcome to your November edition of Our Goole! The clocks have gone back, the nights are getting shorter, and Christmas is just around the corner. Here at Our Goole, we are getting ready for the festive period and are super busy thanks to all the great businesses in our community that are wanting some coverage to help promote what they do. We understand this winter will be a difficult one for many households with the current cost-of-living crisis, however, we are here to not only help with some fantastic offers but also bring some positivity with the great local stories that have been happening this past month.

The Green Team urgently looking for volunteers Local charity the Green Team is urgently looking for people to give the gift of time. They need reliable volunteers who are keen to help and make a difference in their community
Cheryl Price, Development Officer, tells Our Goole what is involved in becoming a volunteer and the brilliant benefits. What is a typical day like? Volunteers have the opportunity to learn new skills, not just in horticulture, but in customer service, cash handling and retail, and it is a great way to meet new people. Who is an ideal fit? The unemployed, semi-retired, retired and young people. What other ways can people help support your organisation? A ‘knockout’ officer sup This month, Goole policing team talks to us about how all their officers look at ways to stop young people from becoming involved in crime and anti-social behaviour, including Ricky Burnitt who volunteers as a coach at a local boxing club

pporting young people Across the force, dozens of officers and staff volunteer their time to support local youth clubs and sports clubs, known to help direct young people toward positive activities. One of these amazing people is Patrol and Response officer Ricky Burnitt. He volunteers as a coach as at Goole Amateur Boxing Club. Goole Amateur Boxing Club (ABC) was opened in July 2021 on Boothferry Road, right on the high street in Goole. Ricky is one of the eight England Boxing Standard coaches at Goole ABC. They are coaching around 200 members of the club from the age of eight right up to their 70s. We asked Ricky to tell us about the club and why he volunteers: “I’ve been coaching at Goole ABC since day one. I love boxing and it’s been a big part of my life since I was a child. “I wanted to give back to the sport and my hometown of Goole. I’ve been lucky to have experienced boxing from both the boxers and the trainers’ points of view. “Some of the kids at Goole ABC have learned to control their anger and aggression through boxing. It has helped to lower levels of anxiety and
depression, increased their self-confidence, and increased their concentration levels. “It also helps to improve their work ethic as well and overall improves their mental outlook by choosing to attend our sessions rather than being on the streets or engaging in anti-social behaviour. “We have children and juniors between the ages of eight and 17 that come from all walks of life. “Some of our members come from low-income families, families who receive various forms of support, and some of our members have come from backgrounds in which crime runs in the family. “The doors of Goole ABC are open to all who need help and an escape from their own personal battles.” We want to thank Ricky for being a true champion for boxing and for giving his time and commitment to his local club. His reward for his dedication is to help young people have a brighter future. If you or anyone you know is interested in boxing, then contact your local club. Local charity going far in Goole! You may have seen The Goole GoFar bus travelling in and around Goole. Have you ever wondered what The Goole GoFar does? Well, it is a registered charity, and company limited by guarantee. It was established in 2003 and it got its first minibus in January 2004
Our Goole had a chat with Andy Smith, operations coordinator, to find out more. Andy told us: “Our first operating base was at The Courtyard on Boothferry Road. “Since then, we have expanded and currently operate five accessible minibuses and two standard minibuses. We have been at our current location on Carlisle Street for three years now, having previously been based at West Dock on Bridge Street, Mariners Street and The Courtyard. “Our vehicles are available for hire to voluntary and community groups in Goole and the surrounding area who become members of The Goole GoFar. “We provide transport for the ERYC Medibus service to Goole and Scunthorpe hospitals and other health-related appointments. We also offer a Medibus service to Castle Hill and Hull hospitals for people in Goole and Howden. For more information about these services, you can ring the Medibus call centre on 03456 44 59 59.
“Our Howdenshire shopper bus brings people into Goole from the villages and goes to Beverley and Anlaby. There is a Friday shopper bus bringing people into Goole from Snaith, Rawcliffe Bridge and Rawcliffe. “Being a charity, we are always looking for volunteer drivers, so if you like to drive, have got some spare time and would you like to help your community, give the office a ring or call in for a chat. There are no ‘fixed’ hours. Whatever you can offer would be a great help to us. We offer free MiDAS (Minibus Driver Awareness Scheme) training with our in-house trainer, GoFar uniform and an abundant supply of tea, coffee, and biscuits. Set a budget and stick to it Make sure you pay your priority outgoings such as mortgage, rent, rates, electricity, heating, HP, any insurances, secured debts, and any insurances. Any remaining money is yours to spend as you choose. Start saving early This is one of the smartest things you can do. The earlier you start to save by looking at your budget in the months leading up to Christmas, the better. Start your Christmas shopping early If you see gifts on sale early and you can afford it, don’t hesitate. Page 26
