INTRODUCTION As autumn begins to take hold over East Yorkshire, the Our Goole team would like to wish our readers a very warm welcome to our October issue. The countdown to Christmas is well and truly on in the Our Goole offices - much to the delight of some, and the dismay of others! - with us finding ourselves busier than ever. However, we return once more with our regular gathering of local news stories and businesses for you all to flick through. The Goole WW1 Research Group’s new ‘Street Shrines’ exhibition - dedicated to remembering the many sacrifices of Goole’s fallen servicemen and women - is the subject of our first feature, and we spoke to one of
the group’s head researchers, Stephen Walker, about the importance of preserving our town’s past, over 100 years on from the Great War. We bring you the exciting story of Carlton’s Monica Gale, whose passion for arts and crafts landed her the trip of a lifetime to Thailand’s Angsana Laguna - a paradise of a resort over 6,000 miles from home - while comedian Kevin Precious brings his fellow funnymen and women to Goole’s Junction as he launches a monthly residence for the Barnstormers Comedy promotion at the venue. Be sure to join us again in November, but for now, wrap up, stay warm and dry, and enjoy your new issue of Our Goole!

HONOURIN SERVICEMEN
Our Goole is brought to you by CreateTVT. Call 01405 819141.
As the Goole WW1 Research Group introduces its new exhibition at Goole Museum, we spoke to Stephen Walker who stressed the importance of preserving our town’s past, and remembering the many brave men and women who lost their lives a century ago While the centenaries of the beginning of World War I and the zeppelin raids that took the lives of 16 Goole residents passed in 2014 and 2015 respectively, the Goole WW1 Research Group’s new ‘Street Shrines’ exhibition is an extensive gathering of information on all the town’s war memorials - marking 100 years since Goole’s street shrines were erected in July 1917. The exhibition looks into how Goole’s 6
servicemen and women at home and abroad were remembered, and reveals individual stories of service and sacrifice. Speaking to Our Goole, Stephen Walker, one of the exhibition’s researchers, said: ‘It is the first time that our information has been brought together in the form of an exhibition, which is significant as it lists the town’s full history of its war memorials. Similar projects have materialised online, but this is a rare example of a full museum exhibition, and
NG GOOLE’S N AND WOMEN
Issue 021-October 2017
visitors can discover the history of Goole’s war memorials, as well as individual war stories about our brave servicemen and women. Very little is known about street shrines nationally, so this project is important in bringing knowledge of their existence into the public realm. We really want to share our research and help the townspeople understand their own family’s contribution during the war.’
The Goole WW1 Research Group - which includes Stephen, Chris Laidler, Margaret Price and Mike Howard - has carried out diligent work in bringing the project to fruition, but as Stephen laments, the difficulties involved often centre on gaps in information and insightful heirlooms that are lost over time. ‘There are missing war memorials, such as the North Street Wesleyan Church, where in this case, we don’t have any pictures of them. The biggest source of information is likely to come from family heirlooms, such as diaries, letters, medals and photographs. Instead of binning old photographs, letters and such items, what
we really need people to do is to donate them to Goole’s museum or our research group, as something considered junk might actually be quite important.’ As well as commemorating the 100th anniversary of Goole’s street shrines, Stephen’s personal inspiration behind his involvement in the exhibition came from a data enquiry, which soon grew into a huge project. ‘My inspiration came from being asked to identify some of the soldiers in the Goole Museum archive. I started by looking at the local newspaper archive where I came across an article about street shrines, and then made a full list of all the Goole men and women who served in the armed forces, and all the war memorials erected in the town. As always with history research, once you start investigating one thing you branch off, and before you know it you’re undertaking a full-scale project!’ Goole WW1 Research Group’s free ‘Street Shrines’ exhibition began on Tuesday 5th September and runs until Saturday 11th November (Armistice Day) at Goole Museum. For more information, contact the museum’s curator, Debbie Hardy, on 01482 392777. 7

GOOLE’S DRINKING WATER TO BENEFIT FROM £3.6 MILLION INVESTMENT Improvements to Goole and Snaith’s drinking water are under way as Yorkshire Water installs innovative technology at its Cowick Water Treatment Works The majority of drinking water in Goole and its surrounding areas comes from a borehole supply, which means that the water is pumped out of the ground with an aquifer before being treated and pumped into the water pipe network. Yorkshire Water’s £3.6 million investment ensures that all water sourced from the borehole is now disinfected by ultra violet light, and receives a very small dose of sodium hypochlorite - a chemical compound that can be used for effective water purification - to make sure the water is safe. Local MP for Brigg and Goole, Andrew Percy, visited the site last Friday to see how the project is
progressing, and learn more about where Goole’s water comes from. After the visit, Andrew said, ‘It was great to visit this facility with Yorkshire Water and to view its multi-million pound investment in improving drinking water in the Goole and Snaith areas. To think we are benefiting from innovative technology that treats our water by killing bacteria with UV light is fantastic. ‘Coupled with the tens of millions of pounds Yorkshire Water has invested in improving drainage locally since the floodings of 2010 and 2012, it is clear that the company has made a priority of investing in our area, and I’ll continue to work with them on further improvements locally.’

FROM A POLICE Beware of bogus callers! Protect yourself from doorstep crime This month, Sgt David Lonsdale offers important advice on how to remain vigilant when answering your door
‘Bogus callers can be very persuasive and they often prey on the elderly or vulnerable.’
10
Issue 021-October 2017
E PERSPECTIVE: While most people who come to your door will be genuine callers, there are times when you’re uncertain about an individual’s motives, and this is when you need to consider security before opening your door. Always be wary of anyone who turns up unannounced, as most genuine callers will usually prearrange an appointment to see you.
Crimes in your area:
Bogus callers can be very persuasive and they often prey on the elderly or vulnerable. They may claim that they’re from the local authority, health services, gas, electric and water companies, or tradespeople calling to carry out repairs. Sometimes they might even pretend to be from the police!
damaged in an attempted break-in of a property.
Here’s some simple security advice to consider when someone knocks on your door or rings your doorbell: • Look to see who’s outside before opening the door. • Fit a chain on your door so you can open it and talk while the chain is engaged. • Always lock your windows and doors. Bogus officials often work in pairs, and while you’re distracted at the front door, another may attempt to gain entry at the back. • Check the caller’s identity before you let them in. If in doubt, shut the door and call the company or organisation they represent. If it’s someone from a utility company, and it happens to be the same one you currently use, ring them using the telephone number on an old bill, and not the number on their identity card. If the person is genuine, they’ll understand and wait. • If still in doubt, ask the caller to leave and arrange another appointment so you can ensure that someone else will be present with you. • If someone asks for your help, needs to make a phone call, or requests a pen and paper, for example, refer them to a younger neighbour or assist them through a closed door. If in doubt, don’t let them in. If you suspect a bogus caller has visited you, call the police straight away. We need to know!

the Little Stars 2017 prize giving and Home-Start donations take place As our 2017 Little Stars competition comes to an end - celebrating all of Goole’s cheeky tots - we popped down to the Clan Shots Photography studio in Goole to meet this year’s reader-voted winner and award them their well-deserved prizes! The voting was tighter than ever this year, but unfortunately there could only be one winner - the gorgeous Amelia Woods who we featured on the front cover of our September issue - crowning her the Little Star of 2017! She won a £150 cash prize on us, as well as a 20” x 16” acrylic photo panel courtesy of the good folk at Clan Shots. Missing out on the top spot by a mere handful of votes, the equally adorable Isla Murphy and Connie Masterman came in at 2nd and 3rd respectively. Isla won a £50 cash prize and the same acrylic photo panel, while Connie was awarded a £40 cash prize along with a £40 gift voucher to be spent at Clan Shots Photography.
For more information on its amazing work in our community, visit: www.hsgoole.org.uk. Once more, everyone at Our Goole would like to thank the parents of our town for showing such enthusiasm towards the competition, and sending in photos of their beautiful children - you’re all winners in our eyes! Keep an eye out for a Little Stars 2018 announcement in spring…
Pictured above: Our Goole’s Kim Wright (right) and Gem from Clan Shots Photography present Amelia and her parents with their prizes Pictured below: Our Goole’s Kim Wright presents Home-Start with their cheque
As we mentioned in last month’s issue, we donated all of the competition entry fees to Goole’s branch of Home-Start - a fantastic family support charity leading the way in helping with the challenges faced by parents and young children alike, allowing them to enjoy better futures together. 13

BARNSTORMING COMEDIANS SET UP SHOP IN GOOLE As Barnstormers Comedy takes up a monthly residence at Junction, we preview October’s instalment of laughs and shenanigans Often featured within our pages as the go-to location for all things art and entertainment in Goole, Junction is set to welcome Barnstormers Comedy as it takes up a new monthly residence at the Paradise Place arts venue. Originating in East Sussex, Barnstormers have been presenting stand-up shows since 2001. Since then, the number of promotions has steadily increased to the point where the southeast comedy outfit is now enjoying nationwide establishment. Featuring the comedy stars of the London circuit and beyond - often appearing at well-known venues such as The Comedy Store - you’re likely to encounter a future household name at one of Barnstormers stand-up nights, with their alumni including the likes of Sarah Millican, Romesh Ranganathan, Simon Brodkin aka Lee Nelson and Greg Davies. Performing on the last Saturday of each month for the foreseeable future, the Barnstormers’ side-splitting band of merry funnymen and women will launch their monthly residence in Goole on September 30th, with October’s show coming on the 28th. Each show will see three fantastic comedy acts from the national comedy circuit, and speaking to Our Goole, Barnstormers’ Hull-born proprietor and MC Kevin Precious - on typically witty form - said, 14
‘Apart from the fact that it’s a lovely venue, I’m looking forward to finding out what the generic term for people from Goole is.’ We reckon we’re Goolians, Kevin. Goolies doesn’t sound quite right… October 28th’s show will feature: • Anthony King - devilishly droll deadpan humour, masterful timing and delivery of a stream of one-liners combine to make Anthony one of the most polished performers on the circuit. • Wes Zaharuk - a one-man tour de force known to combine routines with power tools, bananas and film noir. Wes’ eccentric collection of eye-popping prop tricks have earned him a reputation for a tornado-like approach to comedy. • Eddy Brimson - one of the UK circuit’s most in demand headline acts, regularly working with all the leading promoters. An interesting, considered and thoughtful comedian, he even once played a gig naked at the Edinburgh Festival! GOOLE ENTREPRENEUR CRAFTS HER WAY TO THAILAND Monica Gale’s passion for arts and crafts is rewarded with an unforgettable trip over 6,000 miles from home Its value and standing in one’s life very much depends on the individual, but it’s fair to say that creativity is the food of the mind. For some, it manifests itself through a love of music, literature or film. For others, such as Goole-based entrepreneur Monica Gale, arts and crafts provide the perfect opportunity to get inventive. Working out of her studio in Carlton, keen arts and craft enthusiast Monica has been a Stampin’ Up! demonstrator for almost a decade. A company conceived by American sisters Shelli Gardner and LaVonne Crosby in 1988 to ‘enjoy meaningful relationships and express creativity’ through arts 20
and crafts, Stampin’ Up! now has demonstrators worldwide, including 2,000 in the UK alone. With the company’s creative craft products not sold in store, it’s up to their global team of demonstrating representatives to market their exclusive line of stamp sets, greeting cards, home décor and other projects all over the world - therefore encouraging more personal, friendlier relations between company and customer. Having developed a sizeable team stretching across the country, Monica is certainly living her dreams, while fulfilling the company’s vision of spreading the arts and crafts bug far and wide. And on the basis of her exceptional work over the last 9 years - factoring in sales
and recruitment - Monica was recently rewarded with the holiday of a lifetime to Phuket’s luxurious Angsana Laguna resort in Thailand. Speaking about the incentive trip, Monica said, ‘It was a cherished opportunity that allowed me to take my lovely, supportive husband away for free! He puts up with a lot, especially in my busy periods, so it was a fabulous opportunity to say thank you and show him how much I appreciate his love and support.’ To view Monica’s website, head to www.stampinup.net/esuite/ home/monicagale, and to find out more about becoming a Stampin’ Up! demonstrator, visit www.stampinup.com/ home/en-GB/become_a_ demonstrator_gb

This month, Business Support Specialist Heidi Green considers the best methods business owners can implement to develop their sales leads
The sales funnel Pour your leads from marketing into the funnel, but do not expect every single one of them to turn into a sale or a new customer. It can take time for those enquiries to come to fruition, and some just never will. Once upon a time people bought face-to-face,
24
but now, more than ever, people research you and your competition before you even get the chance to meet them. Therefore, it is essential that you provide information at the first opportunity to attract the right customers and start building a rapport with them. Have a contact page on your website with a phone number and email address both easily visible as it needs to be simple for people to get in touch. Offer them a call to action such as ‘ring now’, ‘visit our premises’ or ‘email’ - sometimes this is just the prompt someone needs.
Issue 021-October 2017
You can then start to answer their questions, and they will become a solid prospect. They will then become an opportunity once you provide a quote or an estimate. Not until they have assessed this and ensured you are the right person to buy from do they actually become a customer. Ideally, you will have delivered such a great service and/or product that they will come back again for other services, or repeat their original purchase. Never shy away from asking a lead or an opportunity why they haven’t engaged with your services. Act upon the information given, and continually testing and improving your offers will help you convert those enquiries to customers. Heidi Green - Senior Business Adviser, Selby District Council - hgreen@selby.gov.uk

PARALEGAL
Legal Focus: Executors of a will When preparing a will, I am often asked by clients what an executor is, and what they do when the time comes for a will to be read. The executor/executors are the people appointed as the personal representatives of your estate after your death to collect the details of your assets, pay all debts (if any), and distribute your estate under the terms of your will. Anyone aged 18 or above can be an executor of your will, and it is important to choose your executors with care as the role involves a great deal of work and responsibility. You can have up to four executors and most people have their surviving spouse and perhaps one or two family members initially. We always suggest appointing replacement executors to future-proof your wills, in the event of an executor passing away before you do. A question frequently asked is whether or not an executor can also be a beneficiary. The answer to that is yes, an executor can also be a beneficiary of your estate, and in fact, this arrangement is quite common. It is imperative that an executor is someone you trust, as it will be their responsibility to follow the instructions in your will and find fair solutions to any potential disagreements. It is also important to think carefully before choosing your husband, wife or partner as your only executor. Bear in mind that they will be dealing with your death, so by naming someone else as an executor along with your spouse, you can at least take some of the burden off their shoulders at what will inevitably be a very emotional time. For advice or support with this and any other matters, contact Heptonstalls on 0800 917 8267 or visit www.heptonstalls.co.uk 25

The hospitality industry is a consistently popular, vibrant and fast-paced environment, and with Christmas looming at this time of year, there are many employment opportunities available
‘Tis the season to be hospitable
If hospitality is something you are considering, then here are eight reasons why working in this industry could provide you with genuine job satisfaction: Make someone’s day Whether it’s working behind the scenes or front of house you’re making someone’s day a little better. First and foremost, hospitality is about people and making them happy. Be creative Whether it’s food, drink or a particular experience, there are always new ways of making your customers’ visit more enjoyable. Open a door to the world Every country has a hospitality industry and your skills will readily transfer from one to another. If you have a yearning to work abroad, the hospitality industry might be a good place to begin your journey. Don’t get stuck in a rut 26
There is such scope within hospitality that you can move roles but still stay well within the industry that you know and love. Take on responsibility If a senior position is your target, then hospitality can offer plenty of opportunities to climb the career ladder. All the usual things apply - get your qualifications, work hard, show initiative, get on with colleagues and customers and you’ll soon put yourself in a strong position to reach your goals. Don’t fancy a 9-5? If the traditional 9-5 is not for you, then hospitality can give you the working variety you need. We all have different lives, responsibilities and commitments, and in
hospitality you can often find the hours to suit your requirements. Great atmosphere Working in hospitality means working with friendly, likeminded people who are fun to be around. It’s an industry that offers a unique working environment, and as it is public facing it offers a sociable and dynamic working life. There’s always a job People will always need food, drink and somewhere to sleep. Even in difficult economic times, the hospitality industry is always relatively secure. Between now and 2020, 660,000 employees will be required to support the hospitality industry, so what are you waiting for?

Issue 021-October 2017 paperwork has been received by the agent. Either party can withdraw from a transaction at any time before the exchange of contracts. Common reasons for a seller doing this include receiving a higher bid (gazumping), deciding to hold on due to expected price rises, or simply getting cold feet. The buyer does not have any rights of recompense before exchange of contracts, but they can however appeal to the seller’s good nature to contribute towards any legal or mortgage-related fees incurred during the process. A property sale is generally part of a chain that may be dependent upon linked transactions that can break at any time. However, a buyer can invest in home buyer’s protection insurance, and instruct a solicitor offering a ‘no sale no fee’ package to safeguard against financial risks. In 2016, Housesetc completed 92% of all agreed sales - we love selling houses!

ARE GOOLE TOWN GIRLS ABO ENGLAND FOOTBALLING STAR After shining the spotlight on Goole AFC in our September issue including an interview with club chairman Steve Shorthouse - it only seemed fair to focus our attentions towards Goole’s female footballing contingent this month, as we chat to Kevin Shipp about the soccer activities of Goole Town Girls Having introduced the girls of Goole to football over 20 years ago, Goole Town Girls is set to continue its championing of women’s football as they prepare to launch a new six-month course aimed at girls aged 7-10 who are complete beginners to the sport. Based on Howden School’s 3G pitch from October onwards, the course will embrace all of the beautiful game’s techniques, with the hope that it prepares its participants to play league football next year - taking after the club’s U12 team. We spoke to Goole Town Girls coach, Kevin Shipp, about the Howden-based training venture, and what the future may hold for the club’s most exceptional footballers. Could you shed some light on the history of Goole Town Girls? We were formed in the early 1990s with the name Goole Town Juniors, as we were a boy’s club operating in the Hull Sunday Boys League 34
at that time. The name change came at the turn of the century when we became Goole Town Girls. We were losing a lot of promising boys to league club academies, making it difficult to maintain teams, but more so because when it came to the girls, no such academies existed, though in recent years we have lost talented female players in the same way. Most notably, Naomi Chadwick, who went on to play for England. What do you consider the club’s greatest achievements over the years? Both the boys and girls clubs have outstanding records, having won several leagues and cups over the years. And for some years, we ran a ladies team to great success, as they won promotion to the North East Regional League. The problem we’ve had along the way is that, when the girls reach the age of 16, even the keenest members are attracted to the bright lights of Doncaster, and they find they can’t

Pictured: the club’s U12 team that competes in the City of York League
keep up their football careers. This is a great shame as many girls and ladies are lost to the game, which is not to mention the girls who do want to continue playing but no longer have a team. What were the motivations behind the launch of this new course? The motivation behind our Howden project is simply to give the girls in Howden a chance to take up the game on their doorstep, especially during the winter nights when they are largely without anything to do. If it’s a success, we could enter teams into either the East Riding
Girls or the City of York Girls Leagues, or maybe even both! The fact that we helped a local girl to get into the England team was a proud moment for us, and despite all the recruitment difficulties, we would like to give the girls of Howden every chance to learn the game and progress up the ladder of success. Goole Town Girls’ new training programme, aimed at beginners aged 7-10, begins on Thursday 5th October at Howden School (Derwent Road, DN14 7AL).
