Families in Goole turns three years old
The community group is a weekly family drop-in group based in Goole. It offers a space to chat over a brew and meets in the Community Room at Junction every Friday morning from 9.30am until 11.30am
Families in Goole (FIG) is a great opportunity to access what is currently available in Goole.
Currently celebrating its three-year anniversary, Kerry Kirkpatrick, FIG chairperson, told Our Goole: “Joanne, secretary, Coleen, treasurer and myself felt there was a need in Goole for a relaxed, social group where people don’t need to meet any criteria to access us.
“Everyone is welcomed with a friendly smile and a brew. We have a variety of toys for our younger visitors and regular guests from many local services. This group very much belongs to our members. We take our lead from their suggestions, and if it’s viable, we’ll have a go, from seasonal crafting to parties and day trips.
“One of the most popular events is our regular clothes swap. Everyone loves a bargain, rummaging through ‘new to you’ clothes. Children grow out of clothes at an insane rate, so the swaps are great for preventing waste, and any remaining items are passed on to The Clothing Bank.
“We’re so very proud of how far we’ve come in three years. From our early weeks wondering if anyone would come, to now having a solid core group of regulars and some weeks over thirty people through our doors for chat.”
It’s biggest achievement to date is winning the Citizens of Goole award in 2023, and the Chairman of East Riding Community Group award in 2024.
Every year they end with a big Children’s Christmas Party - the best way to find out about these events is on their Facebook page: www.facebook.com/ familiesingoole.
Currently, FIG is classed as a community group, however, they are in the process of applying to be a charity. This will be a huge milestone in their journey.
Upcoming events:
Tuesday 29th October - Trip to William’s Den
Friday 1st November - Clothes Swap
Saturday 16th November - Winter Fayre
Friday 6th December - Toy and Craft Swap
Monday 23rd December - Children’s Christmas Party

FROM A POLICE
Operational Coastline - along
Ever wondered what types of crime can be committed near the water around us? This month, Goole Policing team highlights the work undertaken by the Underwater Search Unit
“We need to remind people about the dangers of open water and urge people to take precautions to ensure the safety of themselves, their families, and those around them.”
PERSPECTIVE:
along the coast and under it…
Our Underwater Search Unit consist of 10 officers who cover 5,800 miles within the Yorkshire and Humber region.
The calls they receive vary, but some of the most common requests relate to missing people searches, helping to gather criminal evidence for things like property or weapon searches, and high visibility marine patrolling.
Not only that, but they also undertake proactive preventative patrols, especially across popular open water swimming locations during the summer, which is what they’ve been doing this morning at Beverley Beck as part of their activity for Operation Coastline.
We need to remind people about the dangers of open water and urge people to take precautions to ensure the safety of themselves, their families, and those around them.
The risk is particularly higher over summer, however, rivers and lakes remain popular for walks all year round. So, to ensure local
residents and visitors to our rivers, lakes, ponds, beaches, and other natural beauties remain safe, our Underwater Search Unit conducts what it calls a clearance dive. The team looks out for any dangerous items, if the water is contaminated and any natural hazards.
Humberside Police and Crime Commissioner Jonathan Evison said: “We are lucky enough to have a number of coastal towns in our area, but with these places comes an influx of visitors in peak periods often leading to an increase in criminality.
“By having an increased police presence in the hotspot areas, we can keep our residents and visitors safe and allow people to enjoy our coastal areas all year round.”
We would always encourage you to report any offences to us so we can build the bigger picture and take action. We are committed as a force to targeting criminality across our area.
Local woman collecting boiled sweets and diluted juice for cancer patients
Howden born and bred, Emma Sargeson’s world was turned upside down in 2015 when she lost her dad to a brain tumour - since then she has dedicated her time to raising awareness and donations for the Queen’s Centre at Castle Hill Hospital
Emma’s dad, Eric, lost his battle with a brain tumour in 2015. He had his treatment at the Queen’s Centre at Castle Hill Hospital where he spent his final day. Since then, Emma has dedicated her time to raise awareness and provide donations of boiled sweets and diluted juice to the centre.
Boiled sweets are offered to patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment to help mask the metallic taste it can sometimes cause.
Emma told Our Goole: “The Queen’s Centre was absolutely amazing with my dad. I don’t think people realise the other effects that chemotherapy has while you’re having your treatment. It gives you a dry mouth and makes you dehydrated.
“If people could add a bag of boiled sweets or a bottle of diluted juice to their shopping basket, something so small makes a massive difference.”
The Queen’s Centre is located at Castle Hill Hospital in Cottingham. The centre is a stateof-the-art facility which is primarily for cancer patients from across the region.
The centre is a contemporary building which accepted its first patients in August 2008 and was officially opened in March 2009 by Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh. It is also home to services such as immunology and allergy, rehabilitation, haemophilia and lymphoedema.
As well as serving the local community, the centre has a catchment population of approximately 1.2 million people in a largely rural environment, with some patients travelling up to 80 miles to visit the site for appointments with clinicians. The centre also accepts referrals from any part of the country.
If you would like to donate and help Emma, you can pop into the drop-off point at Echo Unisex Hair Studio at 3 Pool Court, Goole, Facebook Emma @Emma Sargeson or email: emzbov@yahoo.com
Goole’s animals in need of a furever home! Lending a paw this Adoptober...
Whether it’s rehabilitating and rehoming cats and kittens, trapping frightened ferals, holding welfare days or fundraising, this entirely volunteer-run branch has been lending a paw to local animals for over 50 years in the DN14 area...
In August, Goole and District RSPCA rehomed 23 cats, carried out 16 virtual home visits and completed nine post-adoption follow-ups. Three cats have been in care over six months, two of which are senior adults.
Adoptober is a national RSPCA initiative which aims to shine a light on the many pets waiting to be rescued and promote the ‘pawsitive’ message of ‘adopt don’t shop’. By adopting from the branch, you’ll be lending a paw to create a space for more sick, injured, unwanted cats to get the help they so desperately need.
Adoption is subject to a perfect match form and successful virtual home visit before viewing, adoption fees apply. For more details www.rspca-goole.co.uk. Call 07599 087527 or gooleanddistrictrspca@gmail.com
If you are enquiring about adopting from the branch or a general query contact the volunteer-run phone on 07599 087527. To report cruelty or an animal in danger contact the national helpline on 0300 1234 999 (not 24 hours).
GEORGINA PETTY, SECRETARY, RSPCA GOOLE & DISTRICT BRANCH TOLD OUR GOOLE:
For every kind cat lover’s request to find a forever friend, there is a continual loop of desperate emails, calls and messages for the charity’s help to take in a cat, be it injured strays to victims of the cost-of-living crisis. We’re receiving regular enquiries for support with unexpected veterinary costs. Thank you to all our volunteers and supporters who continue to lend a paw during these challenging times.
Here are just a few of the cats in the charity’s care in need of a forever home...
TOFFEE
This beautiful 10-year-old female came back into the RSPCA care after a change in circumstances. She is initially very timid and will hide in anything she can find, however, she is gaining more confidence every day; once she has begun to trust you she comes out for fuss and loves to play. She would rather watch you from a distance then sit with you, but in time we’re sure she will enjoy sitting on your lap. Once settled, she loves to be stroked and given lots of attention. Toffee would prefer to be in a household with a small number of adults only, due to her shy nature and is spooked at sudden movements and new people. Toffee would be best as the only animal in the home so she can enjoy your company. She prefers to eat when it is quiet and when she is alone. Toffee would require a safe garden to explore where she can come and go as she likes.
DANIELLA AND DICKON
Daniella, female, and Dickon, male, are five months old, brother and sister, and they really like each other. They love playing and running about chasing each other. Daniella is the more confident one and Dickon can be bit shy but with Daniella by his side he comes out and they share a treat. Could you give this brother and sister a place to call home?
GAZ (GARY)
Meet Gaz, he is a senior cat aged between approx. 12-15 years old and has lived an outside life for years. He doesn’t have great mobility, possibly arthritis, not many teeth and his eye sight isn’t once what it was. Gaz really loves people and misses the contact of humans, as well as missing going outside too. He plays occasionally and enjoys strokes and fusses, but does have food aggression and is a bit unpredictable, however, mostly he just hisses. He has been having hand-fed chicken, so he’s improved enormously in the last month, but he does need to learn a few manners. Putting him back in an outdoor home is quite inappropriate, he definitely hasn’t got a young cat’s strength, eye sight, hearing or reactions. He appears to have been someone’s pet at one point, as when you talk to him, he arches his back, in anticipation of getting a fuss. He has been neutered, vaccinated, chipped and had worm and flea treatment recently. Ideally an experienced home with no children, or other pets would be suitable for Gaz. He will need access to a nice, safe garden of his own too, where he can enjoy his old age.

This month, local property expert Phil Jones from Link Agency talks to us about no-fault evictions and what this means for landlords
THE END OF “NO FAULT EVICTIONS” IMMINENT
Should landlords be worried? The short answer is no! Originally the Conservative government was intending to bring forward legislation under the “Renters’ Reform Bill” which had cross-party support. What we are seeing is a pretty innocuous set of proposed changes. Which unless there is a massive shift in emphasis there is “nothing to see here”. At Link Agency we have used both Section 21 and Section 8 notices over the years and found both to be effective. The abolishment of section 21, is being accompanied by some key amendments to section
Asking
8. The end result being that from a practical point of view there is very little change. The only caveat is section 8 is a little more difficult to issue because you have to state your reason for evicting the tenant. But guess what, tenants are never evicted without reason, at least not under our watch. If this impacts anyone adversely then it is only those that have practised with malfeasance, it will not adversely impact our clients or other landlords that act ethically and professional. Furthermore, the amendments that are proposed to Section 8 are welcomed by Link Agency.
This is a substantial property in a rural village location. Offering extensive accommodation, this is a modern design and build with plentiful parking, including a double garage which is accessed through an archway to the rear of the property.
The rear garden has so many hidden features such as two ponds, greenhouses, garages, and an orchard, all in need of some TLC but once the garden has been cleared, it would be a gardener’s heaven.
This house lends itself perfectly to modernisation without excessive expenditure. This is due to the fact that the property was built in 1991 and is therefore constructed to modern standards. Any expenditure required is therefore moderate/ superficial. The garden has recently become a little unkempt, again an easy remedy.
With easy access to York and also close proximity to the Oaks Golf Club and Spa.
