Funding success for goole gofar

The past year has been a difficult one for Goole GoFar. The growth of the port meant their base at West Dock was needed for development by ABP, so they had to start looking for new premises Funding a move for a small charity was not going to be easy and with local funders unable to give a grant, there was a real chance operations would cease. This would have had an impact on the people in Goole who are vulnerable and socially isolated.

Thankfully, the charity managed to find a suitable compound in Carlisle Street and with £10,000 funded from The National Lottery Community Fund and £2,000 from Hull and East Riding Charitable Trust they were able to purchase and convert three former freezer trailers into office space, storage and a meeting room for when it moves premises at the beginning of October. Our Goole spoke to Andy Smith, the operations manager of the charity, who said: “A big thanks to @TNLComFund and the Hull and East Riding Charitable Trust from everyone here at GoFar,

Page 6

Issue 045-October 2019

and our service users for having the faith to back us as we move on to the next phase of our development.” The charity has also received grants from two other charitable trusts for on-going projects. Firstly, The Anna Maria Charitable Trust granted £30,000 over three years for the “Fit, Fun, Food and Friendship Project” to ensure elderly and vulnerable people in the area have access to sports and leisure facilities, days out across Yorkshire and the north of England and lunch outings.

Andy added: “This in turn will encourage new friendships, social inclusion to take place and will have a positive impact on health and wellbeing. We really are extremely grateful to the grant funders and charitable trusts that have supported us and allowed us to continue offering our services to those most in need within our community.” For more information on the service Goole GoFar offers, please call the office on 01405 780 344. Visit the website goolegofar.org.uk or find them on social media.

Secondly, The Brelms Trust granted funding of £14,600 to help GoFar fund projects over the next three years. The projects planned will include theatre outings, afternoon tea trips and other cultural events. This funding will allow the Goole GoFar to offer reduced transport costs for these events to those in the community that find themselves socially excluded. Our Goole is brought to you by CreateTVT. FROM A POLICE The latest news from the Goole policing team This month, Sgt David Lonsdale tells readers what the Goole policing team have been up to in order to keep us all safe

‘Traffic offences, particularly speeding, was an area of concern among residents’

Page 10

Issue 045-October 2019

Please mention Our Goole when calling advertisers

E PERSPECTIVE: In September my team alongside the road policing team have taken part in a day of action in Goole focusing on the “fatal 4” offences. The “fatal 4” are considered the four biggest dangers whilst driving and have contributed to the 165,100 road casualties in the UK in 2018. These offences are inappropriate speed, using a mobile phone while driving, not wearing a seat belt and drink driving. As a result of this operation several traffic offences have been dealt with via traffic offence reports. These reports will result in sanctions from fines to court appearances. A total of three vehicles were seized and a number of drugs searches and breath tests completed. This continues to be one of our priorities as the results from our recent Humber Talking Surveys suggested that traffic offences, particularly speeding, was an area of concern among residents. October will also see the beginning of operation Galileo and operation Checkpoint. These operations focus on day

time poaching offences and rural crime including theft of farming machinery etc… The local Goole community policing team looks after a considerable area and much of this falls with the definition of “rural”. These areas are often a target for organised groups of poachers who attend from hundreds of miles away to partake in the so-called sport and gamble considerable amounts of money. It causes a great deal of concern to residents in these areas and they are considered more vulnerable due to the isolated locations. We will take positive action towards anyone caught committing these offences and use the full extent of the law to disrupt this activity as much as possible. Lastly, Humber Talking surveys will be beginning in The Old Goole area soon. Officers will visit each household and we ask that if you have any concerns they are raised. If you are not available on the day a card will be left at your address to explain how you can make us aware of your concerns.

We had a great day, we hope you did too! All of our hard work over the past few months and preparation was well and truly worth it. A huge thank you to everyone who donated, just like Tesco in Goole who provided fresh fruit and water for free, and also for donating £100 raised from their raffle. Big thanks to Goole Town Tigers who stepped up at the last minute and hosted the Football Tournament and raised a massive £120. Also, KCFM, Butterfly Dance Studios and Thomas Hewson did a fantastic job at keeping everyone entertained. We raised a total of £1,544.60 once all the event fees were settled, the final amount raised was £1189.60 with both charities - The Moorlands Community Charity and Helping Others Mental Health each receiving £594.80. Our Goole donated £500 for all the promotional work carried out advertising the event. Lisa Warrener, director of Our Goole, said: “Organising an event like this is something I massively underestimated when we started planning. To say this is our first event, I am really pleased with what we managed. We didn’t know what to expect and there is always that thought at the back of your mind ‘what if people Page 20

don’t turn up’, but we had a great response and I hope to make next year twice as good now we have a clear idea of what we are doing. “The whole point of this event was to raise as much money as posible for the two local charities. “I would personally like to thank each and every stall holder and everyone that came to the fun day - without you all it wouldn’t have been as successful as it was. “Lastly I would like to say a special thank you to Jess Sharp, who hosts a similar event every year ‘Picnic in the Park’ - she has been at the end of the phone answering questions and helping me over the last three months. Your knowledge and information was priceless, thank you.” Jacky Crawford, from The Moorlands Community Charity, told Our Goole: “A very big thank you to all the staff and volunteers at Our Goole for organising the Fun Day. I think it was a fantastic success and if you decide to do it again please let me know and I would be happy to volunteer next year.” Thank you again to everyone involved - we are so grateful that the event was such a success. Make sure to keep an eye out for next year’s Our Goole Family Fun Day.

This month, Business Support Specialist Heidi Green tells us how important a team coach or mentor can be for your business

Coaching and mentoring for small businesses Many owners concentrate on the dayto-day firefighting of the “day job” as opposed to the long-term strategy and thinking of future aims and goals. Coaching and mentoring are often thought of as the same thing. However, a coach will help you learn or improve a skill and a mentor has a genuine interest in supporting you to achieve your ultimate goals. Many coaches will encourage the business owner to take the “Golden Hour”. This gives you the opportunity to look at your business

Page 22

and review the week that’s just gone and plan ahead for the following week. Being in business is a lonely place. Even if you have a team around you the buck stops with you! A coach or mentor can give you confidence to take those ideas and make them a reality and help you see the opportunities ahead. For further help and advice on the above or business growth and funding opportunities contact Heidi Green, Senior Business Advisor for Selby District Council via email at hgreen@selby.gov.uk or telephone 01757 292332.

Property expert David Leake of Housesetc gives his top tips on sorting your broadband connection when moving home

Moving house? Have you sorted out broadband? Moving home can be stressful enough, so decisions about broadband might be the last thing on your mind. Before you move Check what services are available at your new address. Broadband coverage varies, so even when it’s the same area never assume you’ll be able to get the same level of service. Speak to some providers to find out how much time they require for cancelling, moving and setting up new services. Moving day If you have followed the internet service

providers’ (ISPs) procedures you can expect services at your old address to be cancelled and the broadband to be set up at the new address on the day you move. If you’re cancelling a service, ask the ISP whether they need the router back, otherwise they may charge. If not, you could reuse it as a wi-fi network extender. After your move During the initial week or so you might notice the speed fluctuating but it should eventually stabilise on what will likely be your final top speed.

Amelia’s cause Winner in the Goole & Howdenshire Business Excellence Awards 2019

Back in June, CreateTVT, producers of Our Goole magazine, vowed to raise money for local girl Amelia Wright from Swinefleet. And of course we kept that promise!

All together we raised a grand total of £314.04 for Amelia, which will go towards Amelia being able to walk independently one day.

So far, the family has raised over £11,000, and are thankful for any donations made. Thanks to all the local businesses and residents for their generous donations. Lisa Warrener, director of Our Goole, said: “We are thrilled to have raised money for Amelia. Getting to know about Amelia over these past few months inspired us to help out as much as we can. Everyone at Our Goole would like to thank all who donated.” Amelia’s dad told Our Goole: “As a family we would like to thank everyone at Our Goole for all their efforts raising funds for our amazing Amelia; this will help contribute towards all her physio and other medical needs.”

Our Goole teams up with Goole AFC Did you know Goole has a semi-professional football club on your doorstep? Did you know that you can still go to a fully competitive game, gain entry to the ground, buy a butcher’s home-made pie and peas, AND a pint - all for less than £13?

Here at Our Goole, we have teamed up with Goole AFC to let our fabulous readers know all about the team and the upcoming matches. So why not go down and enjoy this amazing deal, watch a good game of football and spend some time with the local “goolies”. Goole AFC are based at Victoria Pleasure Ground which is at the end of Carter Street in Goole, joining on to Marcus Street. The team plays in the Northern Counties East Division and is currently sat in the top half of the league table. The 100% home record could be due to the fans

turning up in numbers and supporting the club. The average home attendance this year is 206. But with the support of the people of Goole, we want to make that over 400. At the ground, there is a fully licensed bar, a snack bar, and a club shop that offers items such as pin badges, scarves, pens, mugs and playing shirts. If you need any further questions answering then head over to Goole AFC’s social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram where the lovely volunteers will be happy to help you. Alternatily call Jamie on 07507 612833.
