Local mental health g walking session The past 18 months have been tough on everyone and for many, their mental health may have been affected by being stuck at home with no one to socialise with network of peer support groups in real life and online, meeting regularly to walk, connect and share without fear or judgement. With walks across the United Kingdom, Mental Health Mates has become a thriving community that only continues to grow! We know, from personal experience, that mental illness magnifies through isolation. So whether it is talking to someone, sharing with them or simply walking beside them, we believe that getting connected is the first step to recovery. I decided to start a group in Goole as part of my role as a Health and Wellbeing champion for the East Riding Council, but more so due to experiencing first hand how mental health disorders have affected close family and friend members.’
Local group, Mental Health Mates Goole, has recently launched a ‘Mates Walk’ which allows people to come together in the community for a walk around Goole, meet new people, have someone to talk to as well as keeping fit. Our Goole had a chat with Bryony Gordon to find out more about the group and its plans. How did the idea come about? ‘Founded in 2016, Mental Health Mates is a Page 6
What is the aim of the group? ‘We want to give people a chance to walk and talk, without fear or judgement. Everything is in confidence and nothing is shared with anyone else. We aren’t collating any stats or asking any questions. So, if you want to come along just for company and a bit of fresh air that’s OK too. There is no pressure on anyone to disclose anything they don’t want to, but we wanted the people in Goole who may be struggling to know there is a safe space if they do need someone to talk to. Andy’s Man Club have joined us on our first walk so we have some great support too.

group launches
Suffering with poor mental health can be lonely, but we want to celebrate you too. The group’s website MentalHealthMates.co.uk says it wants to recognise just how capable you are, despite what your head might be telling you. We believe that finding power over your experience allows you to challenge and take back some control over that stuff in your head. We are a new group so just starting out and finding our feet, but we are open to ideas and suggestions. What events to do you have planned? ‘We had our first walk this Sunday 12th of September, and the response was great so I am planning some more dates as we speak. We’re hoping for once a month on a Sunday to start with, and are open to an evening walk too if
people would prefer (conscious of the dark, cold nights creeping in!). Once the group is established we can look at doing a treasure hunt, longer walks and maybe even look at new and exciting locations to take our walks.’ How can people get involved? We have a Facebook group which you can find under Mental Health Mates Goole, Instagram which is mental_health_mates_goole and an email address which is mhm.goole@gmail.com. We are happy to be contacted on any of these and post details of upcoming events and walks as soon as we know. There is no need to book onto the walks, as we appreciate this can be daunting and there is no commitment. If you feel you want to, just turn up.’

FROM A POLICE
Do not let this harvest b This month, Goole Policing Team talks to us about the harvest and as it gets in full swing in our rural areas, they are reminding people to keep their properties and equipment safe and secure
“We would also advise people to consider installing CCTV, intruder alarms, security lighting and boundary security (entrance gates/fencing) around your property to provide formal surveillance and target the most vulnerable areas.”

E PERSPECTIVE:
be a good one for thieves Rural Task Force officer Josh Fawcett said: “At this time of year our farmers and rural communities are so busy bringing in the harvest and tending their crops that they can often forget to make sure their properties and equipment are properly secure. ‘Their machinery is a massive investment and so we want to remind people to keep it safe and out of the way of opportunist or targeting thieves. ‘One of the key items targeted by thieves across the country is Tractor GPS and Navigation equipment. Here are some tips to prevent these being stolen.” MARK IT, REMOVE IT, LOCK IT Tractor GPS Screens Remove screens when not in use – ensure they are left in a safe and secure location. Mark screens using forensic marking and use the provided stickers to advertise forensic marking is in use Record serial numbers Tractor GPS Receivers If not in use, disconnect, remove and secure in a safe location.
Remove from roof if not in use and tractor is being used on road – this will prevent advertising the fact you have a receiver. Ensure the software is up to date, and marked with security warning stickers Consider securing the tractor in a locked alarmed shed Record serial numbers “Please also make sure your device is properly insured as it may need to be a separate item on your insurance, especially once removed from machinery. “We would also advise people to consider installing CCTV, intruder alarms, security lighting and boundary security (entrance gates/fencing) around your property to provide formal surveillance and target harden the most vulnerable areas. “We cannot physically be everywhere at the same time and our communities are our eyes and ears in the countryside. We want you to call us about any suspicious activity they see. Please report this to police immediately on 999 if there is a crime in progress or 101 for non-emergency incidents.

Goole Civic Society remem Annie Greaves Goole Civic Society is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation dedicated to preserving the unique character of the inland port town of Goole, making it a better place to live, work and relax in
The society has made plans for a blue plaque celebrating the life of a Gooleborn female quarry manager and stone pioneer who made history for women in the industry. Greaves also invented artificial ‘Betna Cast Stone’ and managed quarry companies including two in Leeds, one which folded in 2009 and another which still trades today. The plaque will be fitted to Goole’s Royal Hotel building on Aire Street Our Goole had a chat with trustee Stephen Walker to find out more about discovering Annie Greaves. Page 18
Stephen told us: ‘Annie is perhaps one of Goole’s least well-known success figures, and the Goole Civic Society is making plans to ensure that Annie is remembered in the town. Two years ago, it was the Centenary of the Women’s Engineering Society and one of their tweets told Annie’s story, born in Goole. Annie was previously unknown to the members of the Civic Society, and was selected to be the recipient society’s fourth blue plaque. ‘Tracing Annie’s life proved to be troublesome. Annie was born in December 1888, in Goole, to parents John and Emma Harris. During her early years Annie lived at 9 Aire Street. By 1901

the family lived at 3 Jackson Street and her mum worked as a confectioner, a career which Annie followed too. In 1909 Annie married Somerton Greaves, who earned his money in the shipping industry, and the couple went on to have four children. In the early 1920s Annie moved into quarrying and by 1925 was elected to be the first woman member of the Institute of Quarry Managers.
wrote to several of the company directors and thankfully received a reply. In 1948 Annie sold all of her companies to a Mr Douglas MiddletonWalker, whose son is a current Company Director, and remembers his father saying Annie emigrated to Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) having sold up. Another search of the records found an Annie emigrating with her son Keigh and living out her years in Rhodesia.
‘One of Annie’s great successes was to invent the Betna Cast Stone. Over her career Annie was to establish three companies, including the Weeland Sand Co. & CF Harris Ltd. Annie and Somerton lived apart during the latter part of their marriage and Annie moved to live in Pontefract and Wharfedale with her children. By 1948 Annie disappears from the records and left a mystery for the society as to what happened to her. Annie’s companies continued during the 20th century and their records are available to view at Companies House. Several active directors are shown with interests in the companies and their successors. To try and find our more about Annie’s later years the society
‘Annie died at the age of 83 in Salisbury (now Harare), with her death certificate still showing her as a native of Goole. Annie will be commemorated with a blue plaque in Aire Street during early 2022. ‘To date, no one who has previously researched Annie has found her date of death. It was only when Mr Middleton-Walker replied back to my letter that I could trace Annie to dying in Africa.’ The Goole Civic Society is celebrating Annie Greaves’ life. Property expert David Leake of Housesetc talks to us about how to make a rental property feel like home
THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE HOME Whilst you are busy saving your deposit and exploring your options, renting is great way to go. Whether you’re renting a room, flat or house, you can make it feel like home. Combine furniture from different places rather than doing a bulk order from IKEA. Mixing up the styles will add character so don’t be afraid to add a statement piece of two. These pieces will create a focal point to look at, it can be as simple as a unique vase or cushion. These pieces will go with you when you move on, so they are worth spending a little more money on. If you don’t ask, you don’t get. Speak to your landlord and explain you would like to add some
colour to the walls. If your taste is neutral or you promise to return to walls to their original colour when you move out, you may find your landlord is quite amiable when it comes to decorating. Lighting instantly transforms a room, gives the illusion of space and can create an atmosphere. Lampshades are widely available, inexpensive and come in a range of styles. Be bold with size and colour to create impact. Whilst hooks and hammers will probably receive a strong veto from your landlord, command hooks or strips or washi tape are easy ways to stick up photos and artwork without leaving a mark on the wall.
Times are The
Changing
...and you can too. The weather may be cooling down, but the property market is heating up. When you market your property with Housesetc, we will provide you with expert local advice combined with innovative marketing techniques to guarantee you an unrivalled home move in your local area.
