Hello and welcome to your October edition of Our Goole.
September was a sad month as we laid Queen Elizabeth II to rest. Our Goole would like to thank the Queen for carrying out her duties till the very end, over seven decades. We hope all our younger readers have settled back into school and are enjoying the new term. We would love to hear about the fantastic work you are doing!
As we now enter the colder months, we hope everyone is coping with the rising energy bills. Now more than ever our
community needs to come together and help one another in any way it can. However, the winter months also bring great occasions such as Halloween, Bonfire Night and, of course, Christmas.
As always, if you have a story you would like featuring in the magazine or would like to have your business promoted, get in touch with a friendly member of our team who will be more than happy to help!
So for now, sit back with a cuppa and enjoy your latest edition of Our Goole. We will see you again in November.

10 STREETSAFE ONLINE TOOL LAUNCHED
Goole Policing Team talks to our readers about how they are proud to be supporting the national StreetSafe online tool that lets people anonymously pinpoint a location where they don’t feel safe.
Goole’s animals in need of a furever home!
RSPCA Hull and East Riding is the largest investor of animal care in in area and have been for 100 years. Their £1million Animal Rescue Centre cares for animals that are sick, injured, abandoned, abused, or neglected.
Although they work in partnership with the RSPCA, they are a self-funded and a separately registered charity. They rely on the kindness and generosity of our amazing supporters and fundraisers. They have three charity shops in Hull, Beverley and Cottingham which all raise vital funds to help make a difference to the
animals they care for. Their mission is to educate our local community about the work it does, and what all animals need to lead a comfortable and fulfilled life in order to reduce cruelty and promote kindness.
They also find forever homes for many animals that spend time in their care.
FRED OWEN, CHIEF EXECUTIVE, RSPCA HULL & EAST RIDING BRANCH SAYS:
Our branch is committed to providing a consistent care pathway for all the animals that come into our care. In some rare and difficult cases veterinary surgeons make decisions to euthanise animals. This is done as a very last option and is based on the best outcome for the animal.
We will provide animal-centred care, working alongside animal owners, our inspectorate and our community and partner with other animal charities to ensure that animals have the best chance of a happy, long, pain free and enriched life.
“We will provide animal-centered care, working alongside animal owners, our inspectorate and our community and we partner with other animal charities”
JINX
Jinx is an active ferret with an adventurous nature. She is keen to greet everyone that she meets and loves to explore her surroundings. She is easy to handle and will happily sit on your lap for attention, gladly accepting being picked up and stroked. However, she does sometimes get a bit over excited when she is in a playful mood and on occasion she might lightly nip your hands but there is no malice, it is purely out of excitement.
BARNEY
Barney (Lurcher) is a one-year-old bundle of energy.
Although he is partially deaf this does not affect him in any way, and in Barney’s eyes, life is for living to the max. Barney does walk nicely on the lead, however, before going for a walk he can be incredibly bouncy. He just loves people and will jump up with excitement so for this reason we think an adult-only household would be preferable. Barney is clean in his kennel, crate trained and responds well to treats which should assist with on-going behaviour training. An active home with a large garden would be the ideal.
BAGHEERA
Bagheera arrived into the RSPCA’s care after being picked up as a stray.
He is an affectionate boy who loves being stroked all over. He will allow you to pick him up for short periods of time but does prefer to have all four paws on the floor.
Bagheera loves to spend hours chilling outside in the sunshine on his scratching post. He is very food motivated and will do almost anything to get his paws on some Dreamies. He is now looking for his furever home. If you require any further information, you can also email enquiries@rspcahull.org.uk

StreetSafe online tool launched to help tackle violence against women
“Anyone who has concerns about a particular location is encouraged to flag it through the tool. The tool will then be able to flag to the force the particular locations that need more surveillance to give our community a piece of mind when walking around the town.”
POLICE PERSPECTIVE:
This month, Goole Policing Team talks to our readers about how it is proud to be supporting the national StreetSafe online tool which allows people to anonymously pinpoint on a map a location where they don’t feel safe
StreetSafe has been introduced as part of the national response to tackling Violence Against Women & Girls and to identify areas where there are fears caused by other things such as anti-social behaviour and environmental issues.
This is just one step in a national approach to tackling Violence Against Women & Girls and the initial pilot has now been extended.
Anyone who has concerns about a particular location is encouraged to flag it through the tool. The tool will then be able to flag to the force the particular locations that needs more surveillance to give our community a piece of mind when walking around the town.
The online StreetSafe tool is very easy to use and includes a short series of sections to complete, with guidance every step of the way. To pinpoint the area of concern, you can place a pin in the online map or enter the location.
If you have any concerns about a particular location, we invite you to flag it through the tool. This information will be considered alongside the
extensive evidence base already gathered by police forces and used to inform the community safety activities of police and partner agencies such as local authorities.
No crime needs to have been committed to enable you to indicate where you feel unsafe, and it is important to remember that the StreetSafe tool should not be used to report crimes.
In an emergency, where lives are in immediate danger or there is a crime is in progress, please dial 999.
There is also still time to take part in the Street Safe Online Survey!
Thank you to everyone who has taken part in this Street Safe survey so far. Your feedback has been key to helping us target our patrols and wider policing activities, with our partner agencies, in the places where they are needed most to keep people safe.
We are proud to be supporting the national tool, and you can access it here.
You can access the online tool here on the Police UK website http://www.police.uk/streetsafe
Pumpkin picking is back at Park Farm!
October means Halloween! And what better to do around spooky season than go pumpkin picking?
Whether you carve them and put them on the windowsill, pop them in a stew or make some warming soup, pumpkins bring the whole family together and this year you can pick your very own at Howden Park Farm.
Park Farm, based on Selby Road in Howden, is free with free parking, and is hugely popular with local residents.
We had a chat with Craig Elliot, who runs the operations of the farm, to find out more about the farm and its roots.
Craig told Our Goole: “We’ve been farming in Howden since 1989. We moved from Wakefield where we grew forced rhubarb and vegetables. We still grow forced rhubarb and have some sheds in Howden as well as Wakefield, and sell our rhubarb to all the famous chefs’ kitchens in London.
We started growing pumpkins in 2021. It all started over a cup of tea in the kitchen. Tom, our youngest son, had the bright idea, so he bought some seeds off the internet and propagated them. He planted them by hand and they all grew, producing a fine crop. We only grew three or four varieties in the first year, since we didn’t know there was as
many different varieties available, with all the different colours, shapes and sizes. This year we’ve grown 20 different varieties from small whites to large orange, warty ones, eating ones , blue ones, red ones, spotted ones and they all look amazing. They’re not easy to grow correctly, and this season’s been especially hard due to the dry summer and the exceptional heat we’ve had. Whilst we’ve not got the same quantity of pumpkins as last year, we’ve managed to get the quality and size that everyone wants.
We have started cutting them off the vine and they’ll be ready to carve from the end of September, or you can take some home to eat, or they make a great table display. A day on the farm is a must. We’ve plenty of wheelbarrows and donkeys in the paddock, and you can get a cup of coffee and a cake from the Tipsy cow trailer, which will be here every day.
Willy, our eldest son, will also be selling his famous baking potatoes too - it is great to see everyone enjoying themselves “down ont’ farm.”
The farm will be open Thursday to Sunday throughout October and all of the school holidays. Check our the Facebook page for regular updates.

Crafty places to hide Christmas presents in your home
As the summer season has passed, many of us will be looking forward to what we have to look forward to in the remaining months of 2022.
Luckily, the Christmas season will certainly be upon us before we know it.
Some organised people may even be starting to think about what presents they want to buy for their loved ones - and even more organised people may have already finished their shopping.
Getting the presents all purchased nice and early will avoid that impending stress in November or December and can allow you to spread the cost
out throughout the year so you are not hit with a big outgoing payment at the end of the year.
However, one issue that can arise is finding a place to hide the presents for long enough that no one will be able to find them.
Children, in particular, can find it a fun game to attempt to find their present early, so make sure you hide them in unique places that they would not even think of.
Remember to try to change up where you hide presents on a year-to-year basis, to keep others on their toes.
Property expert David Leake of Housesetc talks to us about how it may be time to start thinking about planning for ‘the most wonderful time of the year’ and where are the best places to hide all those presents from your little ones

This month, Jobcentre Goole talks to us about the Christmas job opportunities in and around Goole and how a temporary job over the Christmas period can be a great way to earn cash but could also lead to a permanent role.
Christmas Temping Jobs?
Thought about Christmas temping jobs?
Christmas temping can be great! What it means is that businesses take on temporary workers (“temps”) for the Christmas season, when they’re busier than usual. Christmas temp positions come in many different forms, but retail and hospitality are by far the industries in which it’s most common for businesses to take on extra staff at Christmas. Why look for temporary jobs at Christmas?
Temping is ideal for many people. Perhaps you’re looking for work, and temping will help pay the bills until you land a permanent job. Perhaps you don’t know what you want to do long term yet, but you’re looking to build your CV and grow your skills. Perhaps you’re still at school and wanting to use the time leading up to Christmas to earn some extra cash.
How to find Christmas temp jobs online
Try typing “Christmas temp jobs + [your town/city]” into a search engine or use Indeed.co.uk and filter for temporary jobs. You can also search by specific store (for example, “M&S Christmas temp jobs.”)
Don’t get lazy with your application just because it’s a temporary job
Temp jobs get a lot of applicants, but many of the applications are not up to standard. Just because the job is temporary, doesn’t mean that employers aren’t looking for the absolute best candidates! So, brush up your CV (remember to personalise it for each job,) take the time to write a cover letter, check your spelling and grammar, and follow the application process instructions.
Be prepared to work long and sometimes unsociable hours
The nature of temp jobs –mostly retail or hospitalitybased – is such that you’ll likely work long hours and probably be on your feet a lot. Wear the
most comfortable shoes and clothing you possibly can within the dress code! The hours can also be unsociable. It’s unlikely you’ll work Christmas Day or New Year’s Day if you work in retail, but you might if you work in hospitality. Be prepared for this and if there’s a particular day you absolutely cannot be available to work, make it clear upfront.
Ace the interview
Employers want to hire the best people and the interview is really what your application rests on.
Arrive in plenty of time, smartly dressed. Do your research ahead of time and check if the company wants you to prepare anything. Be polite and courteous to everyone. Be enthusiastic and play up the best elements of your skills and experience (but always be truthful!) Think of some questions you’re likely to be asked beforehand and work out what your answers might be.
Good luck!
