INTRODUCTION With the kids back at school it’s a bit of a relief to not have to think of ways to keep them entertained each day. But if you need inspiration on how to spend a fantastic few hours at the weekend, then look no further than Blacktoft Sands Nature Reserve. It’s right on your doorstep and is a wonderful way to get the whole family outside and enjoying the great outdoors this autumn. Elsewhere in this issue, we’re bringing you the latest fundraising effort in aid of inspirational Goole lady Alison Coulthard and her charity Ali’s Angels. If throwing yourself out of a plane at 15,000ft is your thing, then make sure you read our feature on how a team from Autoweb Design in Selby did just that to raise money in the fight against cancer.
Speaking of raising money, two schoolgirls from Goole have been fundraising their socks off over the summer holidays to make a sensory room for 21-month-old Rosie Dickinson. Proof that there are still a lot of young people out there doing wonderful things who we should feel very proud of. You can also read about awards recognition for The Lowther Hotel, the fabulous finalists and winner of the Little Stars competition, and Big Lottery funding for Home-Start. And we really don’t want to mention the ‘C’ word yet – but Junction has announced details of this year’s pantomime. Book your tickets fast if you don’t want to miss out! Enjoy this issue, until next month!

Little Rosie inspires local girls to launch fundraising effort
Issue 008 - September 2016
Two big-hearted schoolgirls have made sure they put their long summer holidays to fantastic use by spending much of their time raising money to help Rosie Dickinson, a little girl from Goole who was born with developmental delays and Old Goole Gala by selling buns and cakes and doing a tombola.
Ten-year-olds Elisha Challenger and DarrellAnna Broadley decided to take part in Lifestyle, an initiative run by Humberside Police, which encourages young people to take on a project that will improve their local community, and then make it happen. They chose to improve things for family friend Rosie, who is 21 months old and doesn’t have the ability to play with toys designed for her age and would benefit hugely from sensory toys she can look at and touch. Cousins Elisha and Darrell-Anna decided to take on various challenges to help raise money for a sensory room for Rosie at the home in Goole she shares with her mum, Lauren Bolton. So far they have organised a successful fun day, which took place on Saturday, August 27, at Kingsway Park, they are gearing up for a sponsored bike ride and swim, and they also kept themselves busy at Goole Beach Day
All of the money raised will go directly towards funding Rosie’s sensory room, as well as to the British Heart Foundation and Cancer Research UK. The BHF is especially close to the girls’ hearts as Darrell-Anna’s mum had open heart surgery when Darrell-Anna was just 18 months old. They’re also raising funds to fight cancer in memory of various family and friends who have lost their fight against the disease, including Elisha’s Uncle John and family friend Krooch. Elisha attends Kingsway Primary while Darrell-Anna is a pupil at Hook Primary School. Elisha’s mum Hayley Challenger told Our Goole: ‘We are all really proud of the girls. Rosie and her mum Lauren are really good family friends and Rosie is just a lovely little girl who deserves to have toys and facilities that she can enjoy and learn from.’ Rosie’s mum Lauren added: ‘We think everything the girls are taking on to help Rosie is just fantastic and very selfless. Rosie would really love a sensory room at home, and I firmly believe that Elisha and Darrell-Anna will achieve their goal.’ If you would like to donate to the girls’ fundraising effort in aid of Rosie’s sensory room, as well as the British Heart Foundation and Cancer Research UK, email Elisha’s mum Hayley Challenger at hayleychallo@live.co.uk 5

FROM A POLICE A ‘Safe Place’ for all It isn’t often that we can discuss the police without the mention of crime or negativity, so Sgt Ryan Reed was thrilled to tell Our Goole about a new scheme that hopes to help the most vulnerable people within our communities
“The scheme aims to empower the good willed in our community to give assistance.”
6
Issue 008 - September 2016
E PERSPECTIVE: ‘It is important that, as a community, we recognise and support those who are vulnerable and may need looking out for a little bit more. With this in mind, I’m thrilled to talk about The Safe Place scheme that my colleague, Sgt Sarah Gazda, is currently promoting. ‘The scheme aims to give extra support to some of the most vulnerable people in society. ‘It hopes to prevent people who have a learning disability, suffer with dementia or who are vulnerable in another way from being bullied, harassed, lost or confused while they are out and about. ‘The scheme works on the good will of local businesses and establishments within Goole.
CRIMES IN YOUR AREA • Access was gained into a secure garage by smashing a window and various tools and garden equipment were stolen. • An unsecured bicycle left outside the Scout Hut in Goole was stolen. • A secure transit van was stolen from a business premise • A cycle was stolen.
‘Those taking part receive an assistance pack containing useful information on how to support people in distress with some practical advice to consider such as the best way to communicate with them and a support flow chart.
• A moped was stolen from Goole.
‘Local establishments can be easily identified by a prominent Safe Place sticker displayed in the window.
• Entry was gained into a room by a rear window and various items stolen.
‘The scheme also aims to provide those that are vulnerable with a ‘Safe Place’ members card to carry with them information of who should be contacted to assist them.
• Entry was gained into a property and a wallet containing cash was stolen.
‘Often we have found the police have been called to assist in a situation where all a person needs is some friendly support. The Safe Place scheme aims to empower the good willed in our community to give that assistance.
• A car parked in a street had three of its tyres slashed.
‘If somebody is experiencing an emergency we still need you to call us, but if it is something that can be solved by support from someone in the community, then patrols can invest their time elsewhere.
• A pane of glass in a greenhouse on an allotment was smashed by an object.
‘If you or somebody you know would like to be involved with the scheme they can get in contact with Sgt Lisa Gazda at Goole Police station and she’ll be happy to help.’
• A car parked on the street in Goole was damaged as the result of someone climbing onto its roof.
• A cycle was stolen.
• A secure moped in a rear garden was damaged.
Call us on the Non Emergency Number 101 or 999 in an emergency or if a crime is occurring.

Plans in motion for 175 homes to be built in village New homes could soon be built on fields in a local village if developers are given the go ahead by the council Gladman Developments Ltd are aiming to build up to 175 new houses on an eight-hectare site off Back Lane in Holme-on-Spalding-Moor.
Mr Carvel added that the land is currently in pastoral use and that before the development could begin, a number of buildings would have to be demolished.
The company has requested advice from East Riding of Yorkshire Council ahead of submitting a formal planning application.
The developers have argued that the site is not an environmentally sensitive one, and that it is within walking distance of a range of services and several bus stops making it a good location for homes to be built.
Stuart Carvel, senior planner for Gladman, has stated in a letter to the council that the site was already surrounded by housing to the north and west and that the new homes would be similar to those that already exist nearby.
A play area has also been proposed as part of the development. If the planning application is submitted and accepted, access to the new site will be from Back Lane and Baileywood Lane.

Locals encouraged to share views on council tax support scheme
Residents of Goole and the surrounding area are being invited to discuss what they think about changes to a local council tax support scheme The East Riding of Yorkshire Council is in the process of reviewing the council tax scheme for the 2017/18 financial year and has to carry out a public consultation on any changes it wishes to make before they can be confirmed. The council wants to change the way they assess claims to make sure it is consistent with Government changes to housing benefit assessments. The nationwide changes made by the Government will kick in at the beginning of April 2017 and will mean that the amount of child tax credit available will be limited to a maximum of two for children born after this date.
M. V. Mobility Scooters from £295
Equivalent changes to calculations of housing benefit and universal credit claims will also be made from April 2017 to ensure benefit entitlement is consistent. To further this level of consistency, the council is proposing to make the same changes to its council tax support scheme for 2017/18. Residents have up until Sunday, October 16, to go online and share their views on the proposed changes. A final decision will be made by members at a full council meeting on January 11, 2017. Visit www.eastriding.gov.uk/counciltaxsupport to share your views.

Issue 008 - September 2016
Local runners join marathon man Ben as the 401 Challenge On September 1, 2015, comes to Goole 34-year-old Ben Smith set off on a mission to run more than 10,500 miles around the UK. That’s the same distance as 401 marathons – and he pledged to do it in 401 days His mammoth challenge saw him run through the Goole area on Sunday, August 7, where he pounded out an impressive 30 miles. It was marathon 342 for Ben, and runners from Viking Striders as well as those from clubs in Selby, Hull and even Grantham, turned out to run alongside him. Starting out at Westfield Banks Sports Centre, they followed a circular route from the Rugby Club heading towards Howden then through Skelton, Laxton, Gilberdyke and Eastrington before coming back to Goole. BBC Hull came along to film the runners and a piece was aired on Look North that evening. Nigel Warner, treasurer of the Viking Striders, organised the run in Goole with Ben and his team, and was pleased to welcome him back to the area, after he first ran with the Viking Striders back in January. ‘We were running in much more pleasant weather the second time round but everyone who turned out to run coped admirably with the warmer temperatures and were really proud to cheer Ben on,’ Nigel told us. Unbelievably, Ben didn’t enjoy running as a youngster and only took it up at the age of 31. He was bullied at school so badly that he attempted to take his own life, suffered with depression for many years and despite a successful corporate career, had a mini stroke at 29. As part of his return to health, Ben was dragged along to a running club by a friend and found running was something he could be passionate about and could help him rebuild his confidence and self-esteem. By the time
Ben had finally overcome his demons, he wanted to use his experiences to help other people and raise awareness of the harmful effects of bullying and so ‘The 401 Challenge’ was born. He aims to raise £250,000 for two anti-bullying charities - Stonewall and Kidscape. So far he has raised £134,000, and has visited 86 schools throughout the UK to spread the message that people’s differences should be celebrated. He was unable to visit a school in Goole as his run here took place during the school holidays. Ben has run 55 of his 401 challenge days in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire and by his own admission, he couldn’t do it without his parents Peter and Beverley, who live in Lincolnshire. His father handles all of the logistics of the challenge, including route planning, and he, along with Ben’s partner Kyle, and project manager Tolu, are in Ben’s words, “the backbone of the operation”. At the time of writing, Ben was nearing the end of his challenge with 42 marathons left to run. When he spoke to Our Goole he was running his 359th marathon in a sunny Aberystwyth, and recalled his two experiences running in and around Goole fondly. He told us: ‘It has been fantastic to run with the Viking Striders twice this year, and we were fortunate to have great weather for the August run. I was also pleased to find that the landscape is very flat in and around Goole!’ To donate, visit www.the401challenge.co.uk 15

The charity delivers regular support and practical help to families in need in Goole, Old Goole and the surrounding areas. Its team of volunteers visit families in their own homes once a week to provide support and friendship, as well as organising activities for all the families and volunteers to attend. The aim of the organisation is to strengthen and empower local families and achieve lasting improvement and change so that families can eventually find their own way through difficulties and challenges. Angie Bailey, Organiser at Home-Start Goole & District, said: “The scheme would have closed without this funding, so we are all relieved that we can continue to support families in and around Goole.” The charity has also recently received a separate grant of £250 from the Goole & District Community Fund which will go towards the cost of running an exciting coach trip for all families and volunteers involved in the organisation.

GOOLE’S AIRE STREET HAS BEEN SHORTLISTED FOR A NATIONAL AWARD! The transformation of Aire Street in Goole has made the shortlist for the best rescue of a heritage site in the Historic England Angel Awards Once upon a time Aire Street in Goole was the commercial heart of the town, but those days are long gone and for many years the area was characterised by vacant and derelict buildings. Step forward Julie and Howard Duckworth, who since 2004 have been breathing new life into unique historic buildings on Aire Street and the surrounding area. They completed their first major project in Goole 12 years ago down Pasture Road and have been rescuing the town’s important historic buildings ever since. The repair and conversion of 46-52 Aire Street and Dock View was completed in 2008 and has provided five retail units, one now home to a very successful Italian restaurant and 11 affordable apartments. The restoration of the grade II* Lowther Hotel was completed in 2010, bringing one of Goole’s most important historic buildings back into use as a 12-bedroom hotel with a cocktail bar and a number of function rooms, as well as saving the historic murals for future generations. The Drake Inn at 58 Aire Street, formally Barclays Bank,
has been converted into a popular real ale bar with 10 bedrooms and original features, including rare Minton wall tiles not seen since 1906 that have been restored. All of the restoration projects were undertaken without grant funding, and all were in a terrible condition when they were bought by the Julie Howard Partnership. It is their determination for breathing new life into derelict historic buildings, alongside a passion for Goole and its potential that has seen Julie and Howard Duckworth devote so much time and energy to the town. Cast your vote for the husband and wife team who are transforming Goole’s old buildings. To place your vote and help get Goole the national recognition it deserves, visit www.historicengland. org.uk/whats-new/angel-awards/shortlist-2016/ best-rescue-heritage-site and follow the on-screen prompts. All votes must be received before midnight on 12 October 2016. The project that receives the most votes will be presented with an award at the Historic England Angel Awards ceremony in London on 31 October. 19

22
If you have children who love a visit to Junction, they will be spoilt for choice in the coming months. First up is Finger and Thumb Theatre with Carnival of the Animals on Saturday 17 September at 2pm.
That’s not forgetting Goole’s Got Talent, the Lord Mayor’s annual charitable fundraising event, featuring a host of home-grown talent. If you think you have what it takes to be on stage, contact the Lord Mayor’s secretary Anne Bentley on 01405 763652.

Then, on Saturday 15 October, there is Cardboard Joe and The Book of Mysteries, an awesome adventure with a live animator, musician and storyteller, ideal for children between 3 and 8 years old.
Issue 008 - September 2016
Also in October is Underneath a Magical Moon, a sparkling new production from Tutti Frutti where time stands still, while in November is Molly’s Marvellous Moustache, courtesy of Fidget Theatre. Molly can launch an expedition to the heart of the jungle, blast off into space and create incredible inventions with her marvellous moustache in this unmissable production, based on the original storybook. Rounding off the season of course is the ever-popular Christmas pantomime, and TaleGate Theatre is returning to Goole for the seventh consecutive year, this time with the family classic Beauty and the Beast. Due to popular demand, there will be more performances than ever before, but you’re advised to move quickly – tickets always sell fast. There is lots of older visitors too this autumn. Live music comes courtesy of Canadian ukulele master James Hill, cellist Anne Janelle and world music superstars, Warsaw Village Band. There is comedy from Jo Caulfield, as seen on Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow, Mock the Week and Have I Got News For You, while a special screening of the 25th anniversary performance of Miss Saigon on Sunday 16 October will feature many of the original cast. Pipeline Theatre’s Spillikin (A Love Story), is a story about dementia and loss and is handpicked from last year’s Edinburgh Fringe, while RSC satellite screenings of Cymbeline and King Lear ensure there is something for Shakespeare enthusiasts. Meanwhile, an evening at Junction watching the ever-popular and very funny Lip Service would make a great ladies’ night out. Mr Darcy Loses the Plot, on Friday 14 October, tells what happens when Jane Austen’s handsome creation in tight pants creates his own storyline! Tickets for the new season are on sale now. For a copy of the brochure pop into Junction or call the Box Office on 01405 763652. Full details are available at www.junctiongoole.co.uk 23

Generous donation helps aircraft project take off! A gift from The Kerfoot Group will enable youngsters from Goole to finish building a light aircraft from scratch as part of a groundbreaking community project
The Youth Build a Plane project, which featured in Our Goole back in April, was pioneered by local charity The Spirit of Goole (TSOG). Engineers, pilots and volunteers have been working alongside students from Goole Academy to build the plane, which will remain in Goole after completion and be used to provide flying lessons to students. Students have been learning everything throughout the process of creating the aircraft, from designing, construction and engineering right through to IT, media and marketing. The students involved also get the chance to gain their pilot licence after completion. With the £500 donation from The Kerfoot Group, TSOG has been able to buy the final parts to finish the aircraft.
Jack Milnes, chairman of TSOG told Our Goole: ‘Without the support of companies like The Kerfoot Group, projects like these wouldn’t be able to inspire young people from our area. ‘It has been wonderful to watch these youngsters develop new skills and their enthusiasm for the project has been an example to us all. ‘It hardly seems enough just to say “thank you”; I know what a huge difference the support and generosity of The Kerfoot Group will make to ours and other youth projects in this area.’ The project has taken two and a half years and more than 50 young people have been involved in building the aircraft, which is a British design and manufactured kit plane called The Sherwood Ranger. The youngsters are currently finishing off the engine installation and will then be ground testing and flight testing with a view to the aircraft flying soon. Rob Morley, HGV Driver at The Kerfoot Group told Our Goole: ‘It was a privilege to represent the company along with Steve Savage our Operations Director, in presenting a cheque for such a worthy cause. ‘I know from my time spent in the Air Cadets and RAF that the experience of flying is an exciting and exhilarating one. I wish the students many happy landings and look forward to seeing The Sherwood Ranger flying.’

Issue 008 - September 2016
One of Goole’s lesser-known claims to fame has to be that it is home to the largest area of tidal reed bed in the UK. And if you pay a visit to RSPB Blacktoft Sands Nature Reserve this autumn, you stand a good chance of seeing an amazing variety of breeding birds, including marsh harriers, bitterns and bearded tits, as well as hare, roe deer, stoats, tree sparrows and all manner of other wildlife and wildflowers. Without the creation of reed bed sites such as Blacktoft, there are species which could be lost forever, and there are around 270 different types of bird which now call the reserve home. The reserve’s visitor experience officer, Alex Jones, told Our Goole: ‘There are around 10% of the country’s bearded tits at Blacktoft. This year we have had 10 pairs of marsh harriers nesting, and this is a species which declined to a single pair in England in the 1970s.’ Birds on the lagoons are clearly visible from all hides, with marshland hides providing particularly close views of waders and ducks. There are a series of guided walks throughout the year, intended to introduce beginners to various waders, warblers and raptors. From late June to October, visitors can watch migrating wading birds feeding and resting on the lagoons. Spotted redshanks, greenshanks, black-tailed godwits, ruffs and dunlins can all be spotted. There are also spectacular roosts of sand martins and swallows, and visitors can listen for the ‘pinging’ calls of flocking bearded tits on calm October mornings. Younger visitors are always welcome at Blacktoft and a specially designed programme of activities encourages children to see nature at its most awesome. There is also a series of walks taking place as part of the Heritage Lottery-funded ‘Saving Marshlands’ project, which celebrates the natural heritage of the East Riding. The walks are ideal for those who are new to bird watching, and specialise in wading birds. Alex said: ‘The reserve is an incredibly relaxing place to be, and at this time of year there is a great display of wildflowers and insects in addition to a wonderful variety of birds. We are always keen to welcome new visitors of all ages, and autumn is one of the best times of the year to see one of our most famous species, the bearded tit.’ Blacktoft Sands is wheelchair accessible and refreshments are available. Dogs are not allowed except for registered assistance dogs. For more information, including admission prices, call 01405 704665 or visit www.rspb.org.uk

In this month’s Business Column, Business Support Specialist Heidi Green explains how communication and positive body language are key to ensuring a successful business and happy customers
Communication is key The definition of communication is a process through which individuals mutually exchange their ideas and thoughts through verbal and nonverbal means.
No matter if it is speaking to someone face to face, on the telephone, writing or just standing around, you are communicating. Everything you say and do will be giving a message about you and your company and this is how business can be won or lost. One of the first things you can do to improve your business is use your two ears and one mouth! Make the communication two way.
Sometimes you need to just hold back from telling others things until you know exactly what they are looking for. Do not rush, take your time, ask questions to ensure you have the facts right and respect the other person’s point of view. As with everything, before you engage with someone think about your objectives, what do you want from the conversation? Being clear about your intended outcome and any obstacles that are likely to stand in your way helps you achieve your desired goal. Plan and prepare and choose your approach. How you communicate is often as important as what you communicate,

Issue 008 - September 2016 so will the message be more effective face to face via a formal meeting or would it be better in writing? If you are on the telephone, please remember to keep focussed on that call, don’t do something else at the same time and have to ask someone to repeat themselves. Turn off the computer and concentrate on that call.
Now accepting patients
Think about your body language when you meet people, good eye contact, a smile and a welcoming handshake can make all the difference. Now, think before you speak. Sounds obvious but how often have you heard people “talking out loud” just to gather their thoughts. It is not just about making a noise, you need to have a purpose for that noise. Be nosey! A good communicator is genuinely interested in listening, not just talking. They want to gain knowledge and hear what the other person is saying. It will help you to frame your offer better.
Dr Tony O’Brien - BChD, MFGDP, RCS (Eng), MSc, MJDF, FFGDP (UK), MFDS RCPS (Glas) Dr Chris Siddle - BChD (Leeds)
In summary, prepare, listen, take your time, clarify and build up a great rapport to solve the problem for your customer and achieve the desired outcome for yourself. Thank people for their time and, if necessary, follow up in writing.

Brave skydivers raise thousands for Ali’s Angels It’s not every day you decide to jump out of a plane with your mates from work, but that’s exactly what the team at Autoweb Design did this summer to raise money for Goole charity Ali’s Angels Seven employees from the Selby-based firm decided to take on the challenge, which took place at Hibaldstow Airfield near Scunthorpe.
vital funds for charity. She set up Ali’s Angels with her mum and two school friends, and after having 75% of her tumour removed, it now lies dormant.
Jamie Hickman, Reece Backhouse, Coral Giles, Karl Hennigan, Adam Culkin, Harry Rowley and Peter Fairfield all took the plunge from a dizzying 15,000ft, and to date have raised over £4,000 for Ali’s Angels.
While she will never be in remission, Alison told us: “They told me I only had around a year to live and I’ve proved them wrong on that.”
Alison Coulthard, from Goole, is a close friend of Autoweb, and through Ali’s Angels she has so far raised an astonishing £83,000 for Cancer Research UK. Diagnosed with an incurable brain tumour in 2009 and given between 12 and 14 months to live, Alison decided to dedicate herself to fighting the disease and raising 30
Peter Fairfield, who took part in the jump and is one of the owners of Autoweb, has known Alison for a long time. He told Our Goole: “Alison is a good friend of ours and she is an inspiration. Ali’s Angels has motivated many others to get involved in fighting cancer, from sponsored swims to head shaving, so we thought it was our turn!
Issue 008 - September 2016
“I’m really proud of our team and how much we’ve raised for such a worthwhile cause.” Alison said: “Autoweb are a fantastic team who have got right behind us wholeheartedly. They have superb team spirit and all of Ali’s Angels are extremely grateful to each and every one of them. “The day of the jump was just amazing and such a buzz, and they all wore their Cancer Research t-shirts with pride. The day was filled with Ali’s Angels hugs and laughter and we are just so proud and pleased to have their amazing support. “It is now only one joyous leap to the huge £100,000 milestone, and never in a million years did we imagine that would be possible.” Autoweb skydiver Jamie Hickman said: “The jump was the best thing I have ever done, and it makes it even better that it was all for such a fantastic cause.” You can donate to Ali’s Angels via Paypal using the email address alis.angels@outlook.com For more info on Autoweb’s various fundraising efforts, visit www.autowebdesign.co.uk 31

This month property expert David Leake, of Housesetc reports Thisthe month property expert David Leake of Housesetc the on drop-off of enquiries as predicted earlier inexplains the year ways in which parents can help their offspring on to the property ladder
How to help your children buy their first home First-time buyers are turning in increasing numbers to ‘the bank of Mum and Dad’ in order to get a foot on the property ladder.
One of the main reasons parents are keen to help is to improve their child’s credit rating by acting as a guarantor or providing a deposit. This in turn will help them get a better mortgage rate. Here are some methods to consider: Guarantor mortgages A parent or close family member guarantees the mortgage debt. If the buyer misses their mortgage repayments the guarantor would have to cover them.
Family offset mortgages Parents or grandparents put their savings into an account linked to their child’s mortgage. The money in the account is then deducted from the mortgage, making repayments cheaper. Family deposit mortgage A family member deposits cash in a special savings account and the money is then held as security against the mortgage. Flexible family mortgages A parent or family member can use some of the value in their own property as security. Another

Issue 008 - September 2016 option is for the family member to place savings in an offset account which reduces the amount of the mortgage on which interest is charged. Gifted deposits The parent gives a deposit to their child for the purchase of property. Joint ownership Both the parent and child are named on the mortgage and deeds. The size of the loan will be based on the earnings or assets of both parent and child and if one of them stops paying, the other one will become liable for the debt. The best way to find the right mortgage is to seek help from an Independent Mortgage Broker. There are two types; those who use a panel of lenders and those who search the whole mortgage market to find the most suitable lender. For first-time buyers, or people with a poor credit history, a mortgage broker will offer advice on how to build a credit score that attracts lenders. As there is a risk of repossession if mortgage payments are not maintained, it is always important to make an informed choice. Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage.

Business of the
month
It’s been a decade since Andy and Lisa Kirk decided to dip their toes into the world of being their own boss. Now, business at AK Bodyshop is booming and the Goole-based couple have no regrets
With such a strong reputation for delivering professional vehicle repair and refurbishment to an outstanding quality, it’s hard to believe that AK Bodyshop started with just two people and a tiny premises. Our Goole caught up with Lisa and Andy to find out more.
Lisa, when did you set up AK Bodyshop? “My partner Andy and I started up the company in 2006 in Gilberdyke. We saw the need was there for a high standard of vehicle repair and refurbishment and knew that the best way to ensure people got it was to start a business up ourselves.” How has your business evolved over the years? “Initially, it was just Andy and I, but the business has expanded gradually. By 2014 we employed five people and were offering both public and trade services. It was at this point that we made the decision to move into a larger purpose-built premises in Goole and employ even more people. The move to Goole allowed us to buy a second spray booth and increase production. Today Andy and I employ eight people in total and absolutely love running the business together.” 36
What services do you provide? “We provide a huge number of services, including full resprays, accident damage, insurance work, fleet car refurbishment, dent removal and even VW camper conversions. We offer customers free use of our courtesy car, or, if preferred, a collection and delivery service can be arranged.” Tell us a little about your facilities? “Our facilities include the latest, high-quality bodywork and paintwork machinery. We have two professional grade spray booths with in-built ovens, designed to deliver unrivalled results on a full range of paintwork services. The top quality equipment means that we are able to deliver superior results on all the work we do.” Any major achievements along the way? “AK Bodyshop has grown and developed based on the quality of
the services we deliver, which we are really proud of. We also have a strong track record in supporting businesses of all sizes and are used to delivering work quickly and efficiently to meet tight deadlines and strict quality controls.” What do you believe has been the main factor in your success? “We are a local, family business that delivers a friendly, personal service to all our clients which they seem to really appreciate. We also have a highly committed, multiskilled team who provide excellent customer service to all of our customers to thank them for our ongoing success.” What does the future hold for AK Bodyshop? “Great things we hope! We’re always looking to welcome new customers and hope to continue serving local businesses and customers for many years to come.”
