Hello and welcome to your September edition of Our Goole. School’s back! The sun hasn’t really been shining that much, but we hope whatever you had planned for the summer still went brilliantly. Here at Our Goole we have been working hard to bring you the best business deals and feel-good stories. This month, we find out about the Tour of Britain artwork competition that is encouraging local businesses and organisations to decorate land in celebration of the event. We also showcase the brilliant Walking

East Yorkshire Festival and how Heritage Open Days have once again teamed up with the Walking Festival to offer walks in Goole.

Have you seen any artwork on our fields of Goole? Keep an eye out as there are bound to be some showstoppers.

On Tuesday 5 September, the East Riding hosted an entire stage of the race, as the

competitors lined up in Goole before racing through town and country and finishing at the racecourse on Beverley Westwood.

Creating land art along the route has been a longrunning tradition for the

event, with a national competition being held for the past five years.

This year, community groups, schools, businesses and landowners across the East Riding were invited to take part, as the search gets under

way to find the successor to last year’s winner, the Spike on a Bike hedgehog in Keyworth, Nottinghamshire. The land art creations will be seen around the world, with the race broadcast live on ITV4, and shown in more than 150 countries worldwide.

Councillor Anne Handley, leader of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “We’re so excited to be

hosting a whole stage of the Tour of Britain here in the East Riding, and this is a fabulous opportunity for people to get involved.

“With the route passing through towns, villages, rural areas and down the coast, I love seeing all the weird and wonderful ways people help show off our beautiful landscape.”

Mick Bennett said: “Since we launched the national

land art competition, we have been blown away by the standard of creations that have lined the route of the Tour.

“Following in the footsteps of last year’s champions, the truly unforgettable Spike on a Bike installation in Nottinghamshire, will not be easy, but we’ve got a good feeling that community groups, organisations, and individuals will find a way to do so!”

Leading the way with the Vulnerability Hub

Goole Policing Team talks to us this month about how its Vulnerability Hub launched a tracker last month to map vulnerability cases in our communities

“The Hub operates seven days a week and consists of a team of 36 officers who deal with all aspects of vulnerability .”

POLICE PERSPECTIVE:

Vulnerability within our communities includes domestic violence and abuse, vulnerable children and adults, child protection, familial abuse, neglect, physical, emotional, or sexual harm, and even cases of child sexual and criminal exploitation.

The tracker will look at the vulnerability needs of our communities for children and adults, both inside and outside of the home, at a hyper-local level, which will subsequently support place-based problem-solving to reduce future need, risk, and demand.

The Vulnerability Hub was launched in June 2022 as part of our journey to becoming an outstanding force and needs to work even closer with partner agencies to deliver the best possible service to some of the most vulnerable people in our communities.

The Hub operates seven days a week and consists of a team of 36 officers who deal with all aspects of vulnerability from domestic violence and abuse, vulnerable children and adults, child protection, familial abuse, neglect, physical, emotional, or sexual harm, and even cases of child sexual and criminal exploitation.

The team reviews all safeguarding referrals submitted by our front-line officers and investigators, both in live time and from the previous 24 hours. They ensure they are triaged effectively, prioritising the highest risk and need first, to ensure they are signposted to the relevant agency at the earliest opportunity.

When asked about the Vulnerability Hub,

Superintendent Phil Booker said: “Our Vulnerability Hub is one central function that enables us to deal with thousands of different cases each month, providing a far more holistic, victim-focused approach to dealing with some of the most vulnerable people in our society.

“We looked at all the different resources in our area and have pulled them together for consistency, efficiency and to ensure the standards of service are the same no matter where you are in our force area.

“In order to deliver an outstanding service, we needed to understand the full picture and identify the best agency to target the right people, at the right time at the right place. The primary focus is early intervention, prevention, and diversion; ultimately reducing demand to the front door of our partner agencies, and for the police.

“Due to its success, we’re taking our multi-agency approach national, working with the National Police Chiefs Council (NPCC), College of Policing and the Vulnerability Knowledge & Practice Programme to help other forces across the UK understand our model, structures, and processes. “There’s always room for improvement, and we continue to look at innovative ways to improve the Vulnerability Hub, manage the increased demand, train more officers to become vulnerability experts, and manage partner performance.

“It has been pioneered by our force and is the first of its kind, so it’s something we’re proud of as a team!”

Walking East Yorkshire festival

2023 marks the ‘Year of the Coast’ and to celebrate there will be a two-day 24-mile coastal walk along a new section of the ‘King Charles III England Coast Path’ between Bridlington and Filey.  The walk will afford spectacular coastal views along the heritage coastlines. The event will be held from 9th to 22nd September.

Heritage Open Days have once again teamed up with the Walking Festival to offer walks in Goole, focusing on the Victorian and Edwardian era and Goole’s cinemas, theatres and clubs.

Guided walks around historic stately homes in the area are always popular. A short walk from Snaith will take participants to Carlton Towers where they will be greeted with tea and cakes in the banqueting hall, followed by an informative tour. Wassand

Hall will be providing a tour of its Regency house, finishing off with a walk exploring the woodlands and arboretum, with views across Hornsea Mere. Secrets of Sewerby Hall and Gardens offers a rich history tour of the hall and grounds.

Other festival highlights

include the popular Boots and Beer Walk visiting Wold Top Brewery, Wild Food Foraging and Nordic Walking. Geopark walks will head out from Warter or Flamborough Head where walkers will be treated to facts about local geology and the archaeology of these landscapes.

This September, the Yorkshire Wolds will play host to the 13th Walking East Yorkshire Festival, brought together by tourism partners and volunteers across East Yorkshire

Ladies looking to get back in the saddle and make new friends will be able to join the Breeze Cycling ladies on a number of taster events, taking in some pretty country roads across the East Riding and finishing off with a welldeserved refreshment break.

Councillor Nick Coultish, portfolio holder for culture, leisure and tourism, said: “The Walking East Yorkshire Festival offers an unrivalled programme right across the county, for people

of all ages and abilities. What a great chance to get out and about and explore the East Riding this September, and learn and have fun at the same time!”
