Brand new play ‘One Punch’ coming to Junction Goole this October

‘One Punch’ is a play by the John Godber Company in association with

Funny, gritty, emotional and shocking, One Punch recounts a night based on real events.

When two lifelong friends embark on a night out in Hull, no one thought that the events of that night would be so catastrophic. What should have been a routine night of shots, bars, laughs and a taxi at 2am turned into a nightmare

How can a night out with mates get so out of hand, how can one single blow alter so many lives, how could mates become enemies, and how can we stop it happening to others?

Working in partnership with One Punch Hull & East Yorkshire, this new physical high energy production holds nothing back in its depiction of the visceral realities of a good night gone bad.

The charity One Punch Hull raises awareness of the

danger of one punch assaults and the devastation that follows is heartbreaking. They have firsthand experience and are passionate about getting the message out to everyone about that split second decision to throw that punch that changes lives forever.

The Godber Theatre Foundation is an initiative which supports students specifically from Hull and East Yorkshire alongside their degree-level training in theatre arts offering them mentorship, industry seminars, professional experience and financial aid.

Hull Actor Ellis Basford, a Foundation member, will be making his professional debut in One Punch this autumn. He will be joined by East Yorkshire actors Joseph Ayre and Camille Hainsworth-Staples.

Tickets for the show are £13, and can be bought online at: www.junctiongoole.co.uk/ events/one-punch or call 01405 763652.

Domestic abuse - keeping victims

This month, Goole Policing Team talks to us about how dedicated teams from their Protecting Vulnerable People (PVP) Unit and Domestic Abuse and Safeguarding Investigation Teams (DASIT) are deeply committed to ensuring that this voice guides the investigation, and work tirelessly to bring perpetrators to justice

“Policing domestic abuse presents significant challenges, but with the collective effort of our community we can make a meaningful difference. Together, we can ensure that victims are heard, supported, and protected.’

POLICE PERSPECTIVE:

victims at the heart of what we do

The sun is still out, the BBQ is on, the nights are lighter and we’re still spending more time with the family.

Sadly, there can also be a dark cloud over the lighter summer nights, with some people suffering in silence. We often see a rise in domestic abuse over the summer period, especially when events like the football are on too, and as always, tackling this remains a top priority for us.

At the core of every domestic abuse investigation is the voice of the victim.

The journey through the criminal justice system can be challenging but working closely with partners and specialist support agencies such as Blue Door, Domestic Violence and Abuse Partnership, the DA Alliance, plus many more, we are dedicated to pursuing evidence-led prosecutions whenever it is in the best interest of the victim, and the community.

Detective Superintendent Phil Booker from PVP said:

“We rely on our communities to assist us in capturing vital evidence, whether through statements, footage of incidents, or any concerns or suspicions you may have about a friend, neighbour, or someone you know. Your support is crucial in helping us build strong cases that can stand up in court and bring justice to victims.

“We also recognise the importance of providing victims with the support that they need through close

collaboration with our partners. We are committed to ensuring that victims receive the necessary care and protection throughout the process by having access to specialists like Independent Domestic Violence Advisors (IDVA), and Independent Domestic Sexual Violence Advocates (IDSVA) that will be there every step of the way throughout the investigation, and beyond.

“In situations where we may not meet the evidential threshold for a criminal prosecution, we remain committed to the safety of victims. We will utilise alternative measures such as civil orders, domestic violence protection orders, injunctions, and even SmartWater technology to offer protection and peace of mind.

“Even when we do not meet the evidential threshold required for a criminal prosecution, this does not mean that the incident did not occur or that we do not believe the victim. The challenges arise because of the evidential test that would stand up to the criteria beyond all reasonable doubt, which is a much higher standard than the balance of probabilities.

“Policing domestic abuse presents significant challenges, but with the collective effort of our community, we can make a meaningful difference. Together, we can ensure that victims are heard, supported, and protected.”

Local teenager strives to make a difference through volunteering and fundraising

Shelby’j Robinson, 17, from Goole, gives us an insight into her volunteering and fundraising efforts to raise money for Two Rivers Community Pantry

Shelby’j has been a voluntering inspiration for over two years, from collecting for Two Rivers Community Pantry in Goole, organising food collections at Goole AFC home games, and launching her own online platform called Together We Can Feed The World.

Together We Can Feed The World encourages and educates others about the food crisis, not just nationally but internationally too.

Two Rivers Community Pantry’s project is aimed at providing support to those who need that little bit of support. Throughout these times of uncertainty many families across our country are facing situations that they have never experienced before in their lives.

Shelby’j told Our Goole: “I have been fundraising and collecting items for over two years now. Simply because I can’t stand the thought of people going without. I hope to inspire others to start volunteering in their local foodbanks as every volunteer counts, even if it’s just an hour per week, it all makes a huge difference. So far I have raised just over £2,000 for Two Rivers and collected thousands of products to stock on their shelves.

“I absolutely hate just taking money off people and them not receiving anything in return so this is why I started making eco zero waste reusable products with fabrics used from charity shops in Goole. These products are then sold and the profits are donated to Two Rivers Community Pantry.”

Goole 2026 Bicentenary Community Group aims to celebrate Goole’s 200th birthday with a whole programme of events and festivals. It has consulted with the community to share thoughts, develop ideas and determine interest in celebrating the town’s 200th birthday.

It’s anticipated that a programme will feature a range of professionally led culture and art events mixed with community celebrations in 2026 along with momentum building events taking place in 2025. Some community organisations will also deliver their regular and annual events under the Goole 2026 Bicentenary banner.

The group has been working with Goole District Lions representative

Anne-Marie Holmes and local schools to design a logo for the group. The competition produced a staggering 291 wonderful creative entries, some focusing on the town’s buildings, history and heritage and others on the many things the children love about Goole.

A top 20 was chosen by Goole 2026 Bicentenary group members for display at Goole Library and artwork was created and promoted by Our Goole where residents, readers and followers were asked to choose their three favourite designs.

The top 10 designs featured here will all receive a prize sponsored by Goole District Lions and the number one chosen entry by Evie will be used as the logo for the Goole 2026 Bicentenary Community Group on all publicity and memorabilia for Goole’s 200th Anniversary.

Stephen Walker, Chair of the group told Our Goole: “It is a great achievement to have been selected out of nearly 300 entries. The voting received great publicity with over 300 emails being received, a street vote with 50 entries and 75 people voting in the

library. Overall, 400 votes were cast, with Evie’s logo being the outright winner, but with close competition from logos four and 11.

“The group was delighted with the creativity of the submitted designs, and how the winning entry reflects Goole’s famous buildings, and it being a proud Yorkshire Town.”

Anne-Marie Holmes told Our Goole: “I’d like to thank all the children who submitted an entry to the competition, they’ve all been so wonderful to look through. We’ll be thinking about how some can be used in other ways to celebrate the bicentenary too so watch this space.”

Congratulations to everyone that submitted a design. Our Goole loved seeing your creative designs and a special mention goes to Evie with the winning logo.
