INTRODUCTION The Our Goole team would like to wish our readers a very warm welcome to our September issue as we begin to prepare for the arrival of autumn in East Yorkshire. And while the sun might be enjoying a leave of absence for the foreseeable future, this edition of the magazine is bursting with inspiring local news stories and fantastic local businesses to help quell those post-holiday blues! First up, we have the winner of the 2017 Little Stars competition to announce, and thankfully, the impossible task of voting for Goole’s cutest child was decided by our reader’s votes! We bring you news of Mia Constable’s amazing
charity exploits, as the nine-year-old Goole girl completes her own personal marathon for the Sheffield Children’s Hospital, while Junction also features once again, with the arts venue recently selected to host the award-winning Start arts programme for the pupils of Goole’s Boothferry and Kingsway primary schools. In sport, we spoke to Goole AFC chairman Steve Shorthouse about his hopes and expectations for the club’s 2017-18 season, and we consider the concept of town-twinning, and why every Goole resident has a friend in the Polish town of Złotów. For now, sit back, grab a cuppa, and get stuck in to your new issue of Our Goole!

GOOLE & THE ARTS After bringing you news of Junction’s autism-friendly film screenings in our August issue - accommodating and embracing cinema experiences for all - Goole’s premier arts venue is in the news once again, as it has been announced that Junction is to benefit from being one of Children and the Arts’ locations for the national Start arts programme
In the wake of June’s general election, a key component of Labour’s manifesto was its commitment to the country’s creative arts industry, with Jeremy Corbyn’s party keenly outlining their belief that Britain’s youth demographic should have access to a rich 6
tapestry of the arts, ensuring a vibrant future for children of all ages. Pledges such as the introduction of a £1billion Cultural Capital Fund, an arts pupil premium for all primary schools in England, and the promise of a creative careers advice campaign, all demonstrated
Issue 020-September 2017
the party’s commitment to the arts. But one such arts charity already leading the way in providing British children with cultural education is Children and the Arts. A concept conceived by HRH The Prince of Wales back in 2000 - who recognised a lack of access to arts education - the charity became independent in 2007, and introduced various significant nationwide projects - including Start. And now, a decade on, the Start arts programme, ‘proven to build confidence and raise the aspirations of young people’, is to commence a new three-year engagement campaign, with Goole’s Junction one of the cultural organisations selected to aid children at risk of missing out on arts education. With the help of the venue’s carefully selected partner schools, children will make at least two visits to Junction during the first year of the programme, with the first being in September to see a hand shadow theatre performance. They will then work with Junction’s learning team on developing their critical and artistic skills in a number of workshops. And not just limited to children, Start also provides training for teachers in order for them to deliver to arts programme, and help pupils realise their full potential while making relevant links to the existing curriculum. Jeremy Newton, Children and the Arts’ chief executive, is proud of Start and the programme’s role in empowering young people in fun, exciting artsfocused environments,
‘The Start programme helps many children in the UK who are denied the opportunity to engage with the arts. Start shows that museums, galleries, theatres and concert halls are places that will welcome them, places where they can experience and learn something new, and most of all, places that they can enjoy. ‘We know that Start has had a huge impact on children’s confidence, their communication skills, and led to the personal development of thousands of children across the UK. We are delighted to be working with Junction to provide these opportunities for children in the East Riding.’ Nicola Dixon, Junction’s youth and community arts coordinator, is thrilled that the venue and schools in their town are part of such a prestigious project. ‘We designed a fantastic creative programme with our partner schools, and we are so pleased that we can make these a reality. Our schools are hungry to be involved in all aspects and enjoy developing inspiring projects for their children.’ With Goole’s Boothferry and Kingsway primary schools already confirmed as Junction’s partnering schools, it’s sure to be a fantastic and rewarding learning experience for young pupils from both junior schools in the upcoming academic year. FRIENDS IN POLAND The concept of town twinning and a look at Goole’s ties to the Polish town of Złotów
Twin town road signs. Whether it’s returning home to the town you’ve lived in all your life, or during a long, summer’s day drive along the coast, we’ve all noticed them and thought what’s the point? Or where’s that? Connecting Liverpool and Hull via Manchester, Leeds and our very own Goole, the 107-mile-long M62 trans-Pennine motorway certainly has its fair share of them. The more eagle-eyed Goole residents may have noticed a street sign indicating that the ‘Port and Town of Goole’ is twinned with Złotów - a
town in northern Poland. But what of the towntwinning concept in general? While the idea dates as far back as the ninth century, the concept in its current form was conceived following the Second World War in an attempt to repair damaged relations and foster international friendships - particularly between towns that had suffered as a direct result of the conflict. In recent decades - and within an ever-evolving European Union - town twinning has been used more predominantly to encourage trade. Though the WW1 zeppelin raids of 1915 still reverberate in the town today, Goole was only

Issue 020-September 2017 bombed once during WW2 - by a lost Axis plane trying to hit Leeds. But the same cannot be said for Złotów, as the Polish town was affected greatly by WW2. As well as being victim to the same, untold antisemitic crimes endured throughout wartime Poland, the town spent almost two centuries under German rule until the end of the war in 1945, when the German-Polish border was moved westwards, allowing Złotów to regain the Polish status it has retained ever since. Recent criticisms levelled towards town twinning have centred on cost, and the expense incurred by making these international friendships official. Perhaps most notably, Leicester City Council spent £100,000 on their various twin town links between 2010 and 2013. So at a time when austerity is still sweeping the nation, and technological advances have brought the world’s neighbours closer together than ever, is the concept of town twinning still relevant in 2017?
surrounded by a number of other lakes - but whether home is a town in the north of Poland or a picturesque port town on the east coast of Yorkshire, we all have a past, a present, a future, a culture, a story to tell, and a way of life. And with our impending exit from the European Union and a rapidly-changing, often frightening global political landscape, friendship has never been more important.
You could say that other than having very similar populations, the main thing shared by Goole and Złotów is knowing what it is to live by the water with the latter being located by the river Głomia, and
It’s certainly easier said than done, but perhaps one day you’ll visit Złotów, or indeed, any of our Yorkshire neighbour’s twin towns. You might just discover something amazing.

FROM A POLICE
Sneak Thieves
As we approach the end of the summer, Sgt David Lonsdale advises us on how best to keep our property secure
‘If it’s a frosty morning, do not leave your car unattended with the engine running, as it might not be there when you go back!’
10
Issue 020-September 2017
E PERSPECTIVE: It’s important to think about home security throughout the year to prevent ourselves from becoming victims of crime, but what should you consider? • Ensure that your home is always left secured when you go out, and don’t leave potential entry points open and accessible. For example, a downstairs window or door. This also applies at night. Especially when it’s warm, and you might leave a window open for ventilation. • In terms of gardens, you might be gardening - out of sight of open windows and doors - or even cutting the grass with loud power tools. And in these circumstances, it is so simple for a sneak thief to steal from your home. Furthermore, don’t leave valuable items such as bicycles unsecured in your garden. Lock them up and put them away if they are no longer required, as it won’t be difficult for someone to sneak into a front or rear garden and take them. • The same applies with garages. We often leave garage doors wide open, and then go back into the garden or inside the house to do something else, leaving the contents on display for all. Again, it is very easy for someone to take advantage of this situation, and steal bikes, power tools or garden equipment.
Crimes in your area: • A ground floor window of a property was damaged, but no entry was gained. •
Entry was gained into secure outbuildings where several cycles, fishing equipment and tools were stolen.
• Entry was gained into a secure shed which was then damaged. Tools were taken. • A bicycle was stolen. • A child’s bicycle was stolen from a rear garden. •
Various equipment including a generator - was stolen from an unsecure parked van.
• Lastly, there is your vehicle to consider. On a warm day, you might be tempted to leave your car parked on the drive with the windows open to allow fresh air to circulate, leaving things such as shopping bags and sat nav systems vulnerable to thieves. These items can all be stolen very quickly, but the worst case scenario is that your car could be stolen, too. Similarly, if it’s a frosty morning, do not leave your car unattended with the engine running, as it might not be there when you go back!
• Two unsecure bicycles were stolen from separate rear gardens.
The kinds of thefts described here are committed by opportunists who could be wandering around your neighbourhood looking to take advantage of people who leave their property unsecure, so consider security at all times, and don’t become a victim of crime.
• A Honda motorcycle was stolen from a front garden.
• A securely locked bike was stolen. • A door of a property was damaged in an attempted break-in.
• A wing mirror of a parked car was damaged.

GOOLE IN BLOOM THE TOWNS GLORIOUS GARDENS TO BE RECOGNISED AT AWARDS CEREMONY
While the nights might be growing longer, and the autumn months draw in, thanks to Goole In Bloom’s delightful work in the community, we’ll all have a taste of summer to savour for a little bit longer. And on September 14th at the Junction arts venue, the horticultural group is to be recognised for its own artistry at the Going For Gold AGM awards ceremony. Chiefly, Goole In Bloom’s award in the Yorkshire In Bloom competition - competing in the ‘large town’ category - is to be delivered, along with a range of other trophies to competition winners and Goole gardening enthusiasts. As well as businesses participating in the Business Premises competition, Goole In Bloom encouraged the entire local community to take part in the floral
fun - including garden and allotment owners. Speaking about Goole In Bloom’s many successes in 2017, Communications Secretary Linda Thornton said, ‘We’ve seen so much variety in colours and planting along with some unique designs and wonderful natural habitats. Goole’s residents have really done us proud.’ Even Goole’s junior gardeners have been getting their hands muddy, with four local primary schools awarded £250 to assist in making their horticultural concepts a reality. The judging for these projects took place in July, when Boothferry Primary School and Riverside Special School were both awarded the joint first prize. For anyone interested in getting involved with Goole In Bloom, the group is already looking to welcome new members for 2018! Contact them on 01405 763652.

MARATHON
A young girl from Goole embarks on an inspiring fundraising mission
While the thought of running a full, twenty-six mile marathon in one go seems like an impossible undertaking to so many of us, impossible is not a word you’ll find in Mia Constable’s vocabulary. Having suffered from serious, life-threatening digestive problems during the first few weeks of her life, Mia - a courageous nine-year-old girl from Goole - made it her to mission to raise much-needed funds for the hospital that nursed her back to health: the Sheffield’s Children Hospital. With the help of her mum, Mia selflessly spent most of her school holidays completing a 26.2 mile marathon as part of Team Theo’s Virtual Marathon - the Sheffield Children’s Hospital’s fantastic summertime fundraiser. The beauty of the concept is that entrants had the entire calendar month of August in which to virtually track and cumulatively complete a full marathon, whether that be through running, walking, swimming or cycling meaning that anyone could take part, irrespective of age and fitness. The fundraiser aimed to raise £30,000 towards a new piece of life-changing diagnostic equipment for the hospital, and Mia - a keen vlogger who recorded her trips to post on YouTube - was delighted to give something back to the hospital. ‘I like the peace and quiet, and I am
happy to do something to help the hospital. It’s a really good place, and the people are really kind.’ Totalling a cost of £200,000, the desired equipment will be able to better diagnose illnesses caused by vitamin D deficiencies within the hospital’s world-renowned chemical laboratory. And considering that the Sheffield Children’s Hospital is one of just four dedicated children’s hospital trusts in the UK, it is certainly a blessing to have remarkable young fundraisers like Mia to ensure that fellow sufferers of her illness will benefit from the same fighting chance that she had. GOOLE NETBALL CLUB CELEBRATES 40 Y Goole’s netball-playing ladies are to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the local club’s founding A 40th ruby anniversary represents an outstanding achievement for any organisation, and having been founded in 1977, Goole Netball Club is currently celebrating a 40 year period that has seen the all-ladies club develop into one of the largest clubs in Humberside. The club prides itself on encouraging all participants, and has built a solid foundation by welcoming netball players of all skill levels. Originally founded as Goole Ladies Netball Club, the club has a competitive team in North Yorkshire’s top division - the Goole Tornadoes - who finished third in the 2016/17 NYNAL league, and have been recognised with a number of prestigious certifications - most notably, the
Sport England Club Mark and England Netball Bronze CAPS in 2003, and then the Silver CAPS in 2006. Speaking to Our Goole, club chairperson Jenny Blyth was delighted to recognise Goole Netball Club’s 40th anniversary. ‘It’s testament to both past and present players, volunteers and supporters that the club is still going from strength to strength after 40 years, helping women and girls achieve their goals in netball.’ With at least one million women and girls playing the sport each week, there’s never been a better time to get into netball. This month, Business Support Specialist Heidi Green shares the art of composing effective business emails for maximum customer response
Writing effective emails When sending out emails, do you usually get replies? If not, why not? Here are several tips that will make your emails stand out from the myriad of others in people’s inboxes. Write an attention-grabbing subject line. Make it compelling to open and answer, while clearly and succinctly highlighting the reason for the email. Get to the point quickly. For example: opening
24
greetings, reasons for the email, additional details, calls to action. The majority of readers speed read emails, so if you get the message across quickly, you are more likely to get a reply. Don’t use jargon. Making your sentences short and straightforward ensures it is easier to understand. Don’t try to impress with industry jargon that may be difficult to follow, and avoid using acronyms unless it is to a colleague. Research has shown shorter emails get quicker responses. Try to use bullet points instead of full sentences. Using fewer words breaks up the formatting of the email, as it sustains attention and clearly outlines the steps to be taken.
Issue 020-September 2017
When asking for someone’s opinion, make sure to include the reason you are asking, because they will then recognise how valuable their response is. The final paragraph should be the most memorable, so make sure you offer a call to action before thanking them for their time.
MIKE FISH
RESIDENTIAL PROPERTY SPECIALIST
While emails can be a great way to communicate, remember that picking up the phone is often a better way to speak to someone. No misinterpretation or misunderstanding, and the benefit of a quick answer! A way to tell if you should just speak to someone can be from the number of times you end up having to rewrite the email to get your points across.
Leasehold & freehold: Knowing the difference
There is an art to writing a good email, and with inboxes packed with them, follow these tips to make sure yours get the attention they deserve.
If you own the freehold of a property, you own it outright, including the land it’s built on, meaning you are responsible for maintaining both your property and your land.
Heidi Green - Senior Business Advice - Selby District Council and Growth Adviser with LCR LEP - hgreen@selby.gov.uk
There are many things to consider when buying a new property, and one that is commonly misunderstood is the difference between freehold and leasehold properties, and how this affects you as an owner.
Most houses are freehold, and this has several key benefits: Firstly, you don’t have to worry about the lease running out. Secondly, you don’t have to deal with a landlord. And finally, you don’t have to pay ground rent or services charges. However, when you buy a leasehold property, it is effectively like entering into an extended tenancy agreement. You have a legal agreement with the freeholder called a lease which allows you to own your property for a fixed number of years. If you own a leasehold property, you don’t own the freehold which can still be sold by the freeholder or landlord. This also means that you won’t be responsible for maintaining and running the building. However, the leaseholders share the costs of this by paying a service charge which varies from property to property. This pays for things like communal garden maintenance. This month property expert David Leake, of Housesetc reports Property expert David Leake of how government on the drop-off of enquiries asHousesetc predictedconsiders earlier in the year reforms could help first-time buyers get on the property ladder
Would the return of 100% mortgages and a stamp duty exemption for first-time buyers be so bad? Home ownership is at a 30year low, and the market has slowed significantly since the Government’s Stamp Duty Land Tax reforms were introduced. However, the autumn budget gives the government a timely opportunity to tackle the home ownership crisis. Scrapping stamp duty for first-time buyers (FTB) would be a massive step in the right direction, but reforms to the tax are needed across the board.
Unfortunately, the government doesn’t appear to be listening as it has become so dependent on the income generated from stamp duty. With FTBs already required to build up a large deposit, it seems unfair to then force people to pay stamp duty - a huge obstacle when trying to get on the property ladder.

Issue 020-September 2017 necessarily lead to risky lending because young tenants are accustomed to paying high rents, and in many cases, mortgage repayments will often work out less. The drain on finances from ever-increasing rents also means saving a large deposit can prove problematic. Deposits on 95% mortgages with record-high house prices can be sizeable. It’s fair to say that potential FTBs are trapped, and 100% mortgages should be available to those who have a successful track record of paying rent. Consider a property worth £125,000, you would expect to pay rent of around £625 a month. With a 95% mortgage - and assuming an interest rate of 3.58% over 35 years - repayments would be under £500. So saving up for a deposit while renting is a tricky prospect. Responsible and fairer lending to those with a track record of paying rent would certainly assist aspiring property purchasers to take the first step on to the property ladder.

SPORTSNEWS
After a difficult start to the 2017-18 season that has seen the club lose its first three games, even the most optimistic Goole AFC fan could be forgiven for expecting another tough season - given that the club would have been relegated from the 201617 Evo-Stik Division One North if not for a reprieve granted by the league due to the winding up of Ilkeston FC. But despite heavy league defeats to Glossop North End and Bamber Bridge, we spoke to pragmatic club chairman Steve Shorthouse about the 34
implications for the new season, the reinstatement of former manager Karl Rose, and some perhaps little-known facts about the club’s heritage. What was the catalyst behind Karl Rose’s return as manager? With us being lucky enough to get a reprieve to remain in the division this season, we just felt we needed someone with the experience who knew what the role would entail [Rose previously managed the club between 2009 and 2012], and would have the right contact with the right players. Although they were both disappointed, the lads [now departed player-managers Derry Robson and David Taylor] accepted the decision gracefully and moved on, but they’re welcome back as players at any time, that’s for sure.

If you have any sports news, call us on 01405 819141 or email: news@ourgoole.co.uk
THE VIKINGS START AFRESH IN THE EVO-STIK DIVISION ONE NORTH Ahead of what the club will hope is a better campaign than the last, we caught up with Goole AFC’s chairman a couple of weeks into the new season What’s the history behind the club’s Vikings nickname? There are actually references to the Vikings all over the Goole area. After they initially settled in York, they spread their wings and moved down into Goole. So basically, the nickname was in recognition of the area’s settlements. What would represent a successful 2017-18 season for the club? Obviously remaining in the division is a priority, and with there only being one relegation place this season, it would be nice to not spend too much time looking over our shoulders. The Northern Counties League is a tough, tough league to get out of, so we need to avoid the drop.
We’d like to win the league, the FA Cup and the Champions League, but it’s not gonna happen! Like any standard of football, the players you can attract depends on your budget and the wages you can offer, whether you’re Chelsea or Goole. And compared to some clubs in the area, we have a limited budget, so consolidation would be great this season. I’d also like to thank the club’s sponsors for their continued support in helping us to compete at this level. Everyone at Our Goole wishes Goole AFC the best of luck for the new season, and for more information on the club - including fixtures and merchandise - please visit www.gooleafc.com 35
