Remembering John Hudson Tributes have been pouring in for the local man who sadly passed away in December

A balloon release has been held by family and friends at West Park in memory of John Hudson who sadly died after an assault on Kingsway, Goole on 14th December 2018. John had worked as a sales distributor for over 10 years for Betterware until they closed the business. He also helped local businesses around the area distributing flyers to the community of Goole. Our Goole spoke to some of John’s friends and family to hear just how great a person John really was. Page 6

Anne Howard Webb told Our Goole: “John was a lovely lad and everyone knew him as John the Bettaware man. He wasn’t a person to fall out with, he was so friendly. He always had a lovely smile and always give me a hug when he saw me. He will be sadly missed by me and everyone in Goole.” John’s sister, Rosanne Gaskin, added: “Our John was one of the most kind-hearted souls I was blessed to call my brother. He loved going to the Charter Club or City and County, his locals in Goole for a bitter shandy and to chat to many

Issue 037-February 2019

in there. He and his twin bother Robert would often watch their beloved Liverpool FC - they were both devoted to the team from a young age. It has devastated us all as a family to lose him, he was someone who was willing to get on with anyone, to stop and have a chat. He will be truly missed not just by us as a family but by so many of people of Goole.” Megan Gaskin, John’s niece, echoed her mother’s thoughts: “My uncle was the greatest man I’ve ever had the privilege of knowing. He was such a kind-hearted, down-to-earth gentleman and always had a smile for everybody he saw. There wasn’t a bad bone in his body. I know he will be up in heaven still delivering his brochures, bless him.”

The balloon release was arranged by Nicola Vause who thought it would be a nice way for people to gather in John’s memory. Nicole said: “I believe he was taken too soon and would never provoke anything. He loved his Betterware job and should be still here with his chat and his smiley face.” It’s evident how much of a friendly and smiley individual John was and his place in the community will never be forgotten. A gofundme page has been set up to help support the family, if you would like to donate, visit https://uk.gofundme.com/for-the-care-andwellbeing-of-john-hudson

FROM A POLICE

Online crime in Goole

This month, Sgt David Lonsdale tells us how Goole police has seen an increase of online crime in the area and how we can stop it

“In the time I have been at Goole, I see more reports year upon year of crimes involving the use of new technology.

Page 10

Issue 037-February 2019

E PERSPECTIVE: Times are changing and we increasingly see technology, particularly the use of the internet, in a variety of criminal activity reported to us. As a result, this month sees Humberside Police sign up to actively support “Safer internet Day”. This campaign has a prime focus of targeting young people in schools and community groups. Officers from Goole and surrounding villages will be completing presentations and offering advice to highlight the positive uses of technology and the roles in which we play to promote a safer online community. In the time I have been at Goole, I see more reports year upon year of crimes involving the use of new technology. It’s estimated that the majority of crime in the UK is now committed using new technology such as drones to transport drugs as well as burglars tracking social media posts to work out when people are away from home! It’s therefore paramount that we focus on addressing this increase and protecting future generations by focusing on cyber security and protecting individuals rather than solely detecting. This campaign hopes to educate individuals and protect them from becoming victims in the future. We have also seen an increase in “online romance scams”. This includes a fraudster meeting someone over a dating site, gaining their trust

and then requesting the victim sends them money. It might sound like an obvious scam but the fraudsters are extremely convincing and prey on vulnerability. In Goole we run an operation known as Operation Signature. This is generally a reactive operation as we usually become aware of the “scam” only once it has taken place. The key messages are simple: 1) Never send or give money to anyone you don’t know or trust 2) Check people are who they say they are 3) Don’t share your personal information 4) Make decisions in your own time 5) If in doubt phone a relative or a friend and ask for their opinion If you have no one to talk to please call us or any other support groups and charities. People do not think they’d fall for such scams but the stats tell a different story with 1 in 5 people falling victim to fraud every year and nearly 50% of all adults having been targeted by fraudsters in one way or another. If you are concerned that anyone may be a victim or need some advice please don’t hesitate to let myself or my colleagues know. We’d rather proactively respond and avoid you becoming a victim.

This month, Business Support Specialist Heidi Green tells us about how important it is for staff to have correct training, skills and knowledge

Future-proof your business Whether it’s your own management skills, the skills your employees have or keeping an eye on the competition, a constant focus on high performance can help your business succeed. After all, we do know that quality is vital for business success. Many people have become “accidental” managers, falling into a role that they are not qualified to do and in many cases not comfortable doing, impacting the professionalism and efficiency of the business.

There is no doubt that those businesses that continue to invest time and money in their workforce by offering regular training and development, see the benefit of their efforts through business growth and profitability. For example, many people still think of apprenticeships for school leavers but you can use them for work-based learning for existing staff. An apprenticeship helps build skilled, motivated workforces and helps people gain meaningful experience in the workplace. Looking after your interests, looking after you

You can set out in your will who should take care of your minor children in the event of your death before they reach 18. The process will be faster after your death

To make a will allows you to set out exactly how your estate is divided and who will deal with this. They can act as soon as you die, as your will gives them the authority to do so. By not having a will, there is no one with legal authority to act until the Probate registry grants “Letters of Administration” and this can hold up the administration of the estate in most cases. Property expert David Leake of Housesetc talks to us about the advantages of adding an extension to your home

You are happy in your home, but for some reason, it seems to be getting smaller and smaller.

It is a dilemma which confronts most homeowners at some time in their lives, and their decision, to some extent, often depends on the state of the housing market.

bedroom house is worth significantly more. How much value is added by the various extension options – from loft conversions to conservatories, from additional bedrooms to extra loos – varies from property to property.

However, it’s no good adding £20,000 to the value of your property if you have spent £25,000 in the process. Most extensions pay their way, though results can vary.

One thing is certain: the option of extending rather than moving to a bigger property is one which homeowners need to take seriously, particularly at a time of static house prices.

Have you ever thought about a career in child-minding? We take a closer look at the process into becoming a registered child-minder

How to become a registered child-minder Child-minding can be a very rewarding, flexible career choice and can fit in around your own childcare commitments. Many child-minders are self-employed though you can register with an agency. Child-minders must register with Ofsted. Work tends to be home based and this must also be registered and regulated. Usual duties include childcare and early education, creative play, reading, story telling, taking the children to and from nursery or to activities and clubs. There is an expectation that the needs of each child will be supported and you will be required to have knowledge of early education requirements. There are no formal qualifications needed to enter this self-employed role, though a relevant care or Page 34

childcare qualification such as an NVQ in Child Care may be of value. Registration process 1. Be registered on the Early Years Register and/or the Childcare Register and hold an up-to-date paediatric first aid certificate. 2. Be Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checked.

4. Deliver the Early Years Foundation Stage for children on the Early Years Register.

You can also visit the Professional Association for Childcare and Early Years website www.pacey.org. uk/working-in- childcare/ childminders/becominga-childminder/beforeregistering/

Thereafter you need to register with Ofsted who will visit the home to check the suitability of the premises and check knowledge of the early years’ curriculum. If approved they will issue a certificate. They will return to re-inspect after approximately 30 months and obtain a

If you are in receipt of benefits such as Universal Credit, Jobseeker’s Allowance, Employment and Support Allowance or Income Support, you may be able to obtain help from your local jobcentre to set up your own business

3. Have appropriate insurance cover, including Public Liability.
