FITMUMS & FRIENDS LAUN LATEST CLUB IN GOOLE Athletics club and charity, Fitmums & Friends, has launched its newest club in Goole, a friendly and supportive running club, open to men and women Goole Fitmums & Friends will offer run distances of one to six miles at its weekly Monday evening club sessions, with runners choosing the distance that feels right for them. Every run is supported by trained volunteer run leaders who help all members to achieve their goals whatever their ability or experience. Chief Officer and founder of Fitmums & Friends, Sam Barlow BEM explains: “At Fitmums & Friends we are passionate about supporting everyone to become more active, from complete beginners to Page 6
more regular runners. When we run we use a simple support system known as “shepherding” which enables runners of all abilities to exercise together – it supports those who need to go at a slower pace and still provides a challenge for those who are more capable. As a result, everyone is fit enough for our sessions.” Club co-ordinators, Andy and Wendy continue: “If you’re thinking about starting or improving your running, then do come along and give the group a try. You don’t have to be a mum, nor do you have to be fit – the ‘& Friends’ is just as important!
Everyone really does fit at Fitmums & Friends, so please join us if you would like to get fit, make friends and have fun!” Fitmums & Friends would like to acknowledge the support of both Humberside Fire & Rescue Service, which is providing the club’s venue in Goole, and East Riding of Yorkshire Council, which has helped set up the Goole club. Laurie Fergusson, Public Health Lead at ERYC explains: “We are really excited about the launch of the new Fitmums & Friends group in Goole. Fitmums & Friends provides support and motivation

to our East Riding residents encouraging them to be more physically and socially active and to improve their health and wellbeing. Fitmums & Friends is open to men and women aged 16+, with potential members able to attend three sessions before joining a club at £36 per year. FROM A POLICE
Spotlight on Go Investigation D Local CID teams are a recent re-introduction by the new Chief Constable of Humberside Police
Page 10
Issue 033-October 2018
E PERSPECTIVE:
oole’s Criminal Department The CID department in Goole comprises two teams currently, who provide investigation cover for the town and surrounding areas 365 days of the year. Local CID teams are a recent re-introduction by the new Chief Constable of Humberside Police, who recognises the benefits of having specialist investigators based in the communities they serve. Since the teams were introduced at Goole in the middle of May this year, they have been allocated nearly 200 serious investigations to investigate. There are currently two Detective Constables, four Investigation Police Officers, and two Investigation Officers based at Goole as well as a Detective Sergeant. Together they deal with the more complex investigations including serious assaults, burglaries, drugs-supply offences, robberies, frauds and high-value thefts, as well as all domestic-related crimes where there is a risk of harm.
The CID teams at Goole have had some real successes over the last few months. Some of the incidents they have dealt with include: • A Criminal Behaviour Order issued at court to a prolific domestic abuse perpetrator from Old Goole, requiring him to advise police every time he starts a new relationship so that safeguarding measures can be taken. • A four year prison sentence for a prolific domestic abuse offender from Goole, who had subjected his partner to six years of physical and mental abuse. • A charge and immediate remand into custody for a violent male who had caused life-changing injuries to an innocent party in a particularly nasty assault in Snaith. Look out for more from the CID teams in future editions.

2018 WINNERS!
Pictured above: All three winners, The Green Team and Our Goole’s Asha Northway As our 2018 Little Stars competition comes to an end - celebrating all of Goole’s cheeky tots - we popped down to the Clan Shots Photography studio in Goole to meet this year’s reader-voted winners and award them their welldeserved prizes! The voting was tighter than ever this year, but unfortunately there could only be one winner the gorgeous Dexter Dobson who we featured on the front cover of our September issue crowning him the Little Star of 2018! He won a £150 cash prize on us, as well as a 20x17in acrylic photo panel courtesy of the good folk at Clan Shots. Missing out on the top spot by a mere handful of votes, the equally adorable Emily Thornton Page 12
and Rayden Taylor came in at 2nd and 3rd respectively. Emily won a £50 cash prize and the same acrylic photo panel, while Connie was awarded a £40 gift voucher to be spent at Clan Shots Photography. We donated all of the competition entry fees plus an additional 10% from Clan Shots Photography to The Green Team - a local charity that provides the elderly and people with disabilities a garden maintenance service. Once more, everyone at Our Goole would like to thank the parents of our town for showing such enthusiasm towards the competition, and sending in photos of their beautiful children you’re all winners in our eyes! Keep an eye out for a Little Stars 2019 announcement in spring…

Commemorative WW1 exhibition in Rawcliffe A commemorative World War One exhibition, Aftermath: Peace at Last, will be held at St James’ Church in Rawcliffe on Friday 9th and Saturday 10th November Suffragetes, the Spanish Flu outbreak, war poetry and the ‘the thankful villages’. There will also be relevant posters, artefacts, models and books on display. Of special interest will be the book by local historian, Robert Barker, entitled “Though Lost to Sight, to Memory Dear: Rawcliffe - one parish and its people in time of war”. Visitors will be able to purchase this fascinating local account.
The exhibition is being organised by Rawcliffe WW1 group, made up of Robert Barker, Roy Dresser and David Mckenna and follows the group’s earlier exhibition in 2014, which was a huge success. The focus of this exhibition is on the outcomes following the end of hostilities, and visitors will be able to see exhibits on The Treaty of Versailles, the

David McKenna said: “We obtained a grant from the Armed Services Covenant Fund which then supplied 10 ‘there but not there’ silhouettes, which will be attached to the church benches to remind people of the absence of friends/colleagues who died. A stark reminder, if one was needed, of the consequences of war.” Entry to the exhibition is free and it is on from 10am to 5pm on both days.

Now in its eighth year, the English Curry Awards celebrate and acknowledge restaurants around the country at the biggest and most prolific curry event of the year.
Importantly, Zolsha has been recognised not only for the quality of its food and hospitality, but also for its charity work within the community.
Zolsha has been an integral part of Howden’s eating-out scene for almost a decade now, welcoming customers who enjoy authentic Indian cuisine in a relaxed
Zolsha manager Ash Ahmed told Our Goole that Zolsha has helped local charitable causes such as Howden AFC, Goole Netball raising money
The team at Zolsha has also worked with local school children, helping them learn about different cultures by cooking their own curry dish working with the spices used in the restaurant. The restaurant is also committed to helping the homeless by packaging up food left over from the Sunday buffet and delivering it to those in need. Ash Ahmed said: “I am so proud of the team here at Zolsha for all their hard work. This month, Business Support Specialist Heidi Green tells us about new filing changes for VAT registered businesses
MAKING TAX DIGITAL There is a major change coming for all businesses and landlords or indeed anyone who submits a self-assessment tax return.
From 1st April 2019 all VAT registered businesses who have a turnover of the current VAT registration threshold (£85,000) will need software which directly submits account information to the HMRC on a quarterly basis. Currently businesses who maintain manual records will need to make significant changes due to the need to use software which is compatible with the HMRC. If your business does not have a turnover of £85,000 or more
then you have until April 2020 to get ready for the change.
There is an event at Scarthingwell Golf Club near Tadcaster on the 31 October to discuss “All Things Digital”. For further help and advice on business growth and funding opportunities contact Heidi Green, Senior Business Advisor for Selby District Council via email at hgreen@selby.gov. uk or telephone 01757 292332.

LAURA KIDDY
PARALEGAL
Unmarried couples could be at risk without a will With a little over 40 per cent of adults in the UK having a will, many people are unaware that surviving partners are at serious risk of not receiving anything if their partner dies. If a couple is not married and one dies, the surviving partner will not receive any part of an estate unless assets are held in joint names. One of the more commonly seen examples is in relation to the family home. Many people would expect that the home would be passed to them upon the death of their partner but sadly this is not necessarily the case. The estate is usually passed to the deceased’s children in this instance and, if the couple have no children, it can be passed to parents, siblings and extended family members, even those who you may not necessarily wish to receive any part of the estate. Making a will is the only way of ensuring a partner receives part or even all of the assets. A will is a lot easier to prepare than many people would imagine and ensures that your final wishes are upheld. Property expert David Leake of Housesetc says that few things divide opinion among homeowners as much as new-build properties
The ideal home
For some buyers, new builds represent modern living at its best. For others, period properties represent British architecture at its finest, from Georgian terraces to chocolate-box cottages. Thanks to initiatives such as Help-to-Buy it can be easier, particularly for first-time buyers, to get funding for a new build. It is also often possible for the buyer to work with the builder to customise a property. Most new-builds also come with a guarantee from the builder and can be more energy-efficient than older properties.
Page 22
New builds are generally laid out in such a way to reflect modern family life, with open-plan living spaces. If you buy off-plan, a new build may prove to be a good investment. All of that said, new builds tend to be less spacious than older homes, and may be closely bunched, with smaller gardens and less parking. If you have to sell in the short term do not expect to recoup your costs. Completion dates can also be prone to delays. There will never be a clear ‘winner’ but it’s best to have an open mind when both types of property come to market.

Welcome to the first in a series of questions commonly asked by employers at Universal Credit events.
Universal Credit questions and answers What are the benefits of Universal Credit for employers? Claimants can be flexible about working more or ad hoc additional hours because Universal Credit has no restrictions on the number of hours worked. It automatically responds to fluctuations in earnings, and allows claimants to keep receiving Universal Credit, making work pay. How are claimants informed that they can now work more than 16 hours without losing their benefit? Claimants can get help and advice from GOV.UK and from Jobcentre staff. Work coaches explain the changes at their interview when they make a claim and at further meetings. How do work coaches help claimants increase their earnings and become more Page 30
financially independent? They explain how they can be better off working more. They encourage claimants to discuss with their employer how they can increase their chances of earning more, for example by improving their skills. How is the information employers supply to HMRC linked to the DWP? When a claimant is accepted as eligible for Universal Credit, DWP verifies their identity and Universal Credit sends an electronic message to HMRC. HMRC marks the individual’s record as being a Universal Credit claimant and automatically pass Pay As You Earn (PAYE) data supplied in relation to that individual to DWP. How quickly does information that employers supply to HMRC transfer to DWP?
Employers should supply PAYE information to HMRC on or before the day employees are paid. PAYE information is sent by HMRC in real time. This is Real Time Information (RTI). HMRC sends relevant data on Universal Credit claimants to DWP several times daily. This means the information supplied will be with DWP on the same day or on the next day, at the latest. What happens if RTI data is submitted late? This could mean that your employees receive too much or too little Universal Credit. You could also risk receiving a penalty if you fail to submit PAYE details on time. For more information see the Running Payroll guidance at GOV.UK. Don’t miss the next edition of Our Goole for more Q&As on Universal Credit.

AIRMYN BOWLS CLUB SECURES COUNTY DOUBLE
If you have ever thought of taking up the relaxing sport of bowls, there is no time like the present with Airmyn Bowls Club on an unprecedented high having secured an historic double Not content with winning the Humberside County Team Finals (Markham and Drayton Trophies), the Club has also been named the Humberside Sports Association Triples League Champions, with one game to spare. Having previously won the Markham Trophy in 2012 and 2013, Airmyn were confident of putting up a good show against strong opposition from Blossom Way Bowls Club, Immingham. They won all four rinks resoundingly with an aggregate score of 74 – 47. They then took on local rivals Howden, with a final aggregate score of 62 – 49. The final week of the bowls season saw Airmyn Riverside play Fishlake and with the league title Page 34
already secured, the Club confirmed its status as league champions with an emphatic 10 – 0 victory. Having enjoyed an unusually warm summer season, the Airmyn Riverside bowlers have this year conceded just 15 rinks out of 124 matches. They have amassed 126 points to win the league comfortably from Jemmy Hirst on 98 points. And this for the 12th time of asking in the 15 years since their move from Hook Road. Anyone wishing to take up bowls for the 2019 season should contact either Chris Morris (01405 763226) or Steve Theaker (01405 768526). Airmyn Bowls Club would also like to thank their many sponsors throughout the season.
