INTRODUCTION Hello once again and welcome to the September issue!
It’s hard to believe that autumn is right around the corner, although we can’t really complain about our summer this year, can we? By UK standards it’s been fantastic. That said, there is a small part of us here at Our Goole now looking forward to the first signs of autumn – turning leaves and little sycamore helicopters twirling in the breeze. Though needless to say, we will take the sun and blue skies for as long as we can! And while the kids may be back at school, as
always, there is still plenty going on in and around Goole and Howden for the whole family to enjoy, not least parkrun every Saturday morning at West Park – a great way for everyone, regardless of age or ability, to keep active. Our slightly older readers may have memories or anecdotes to share about Goole Library and Museum, which will celebrate its 50th anniversary in November. Turn to page 16 to find out how you can get involved. Have a great month, and we’ll see you again in October!

Local volunteers are helping to unearth all manner of long lost treasures on land next to Bishops Manor. The aim? To uncover remnants of Howden’s 15th-century Bishops Palace
Howden’s lost secrets When photographer and local enthusiast Mike Hatfield first considered the prospect of an archaeological dig on land surrounding Bishops Manor in Howden’s picturesque town centre, he probably didn’t anticipate the level of local enthusiasm for the proposal, nor the intriguing finds that the endeavour would reveal. Now a couple of months into an archaeological dig that has seen no shortage of local people volunteer their services, Mike is feeling enthused about the project and the finds uncovered so far. He told Our Goole: “The research Page 6
and geophysical surveys are now all complete and we have been digging since the end of June, with excellent progress made. “We are recording major finds in the first trench, namely a very early courtyard floor and wall
foundations, many pieces of pottery dating from as early as the 16th century, a Roman handmade brick and an odd coin yet to be dated. Not to mention enough clay pipes to open a shop!
Issue 032-September 2018 In the meantime, initial work has begun on the second trench, which has already revealed a wall, and Mike is looking to welcome more volunteers to the project. He is also on the lookout for someone with a wood chipper to help clear a wood pile.
“We have many volunteers from Howden helping with washing and recording finds, and we are also fortunate to have the support of several local organisations. Howden Rotary Club has donated a gazebo and we have taken delivery of a container from Mobile Mini in Lincoln free of charge.” In medieval times, Howden had a level of influence that might seem surprising today. Once famous throughout Europe for its horse fair, which was the largest in the country, Howden was given to the Bishops of Durham by William the Conqueror, who built a vast palace on a site close to the Minster.
where some of the long-lost buildings that formed part of the vast palace complex once stood. They were set around a central courtyard, which would have been located on what is now a lawned area at the front of Bishops Manor. Mike volunteers at the Howden Heritage Centre, which opened last year, and it’s hoped that artefacts found on the site will go on display at the Centre in due course. Then, once the excavation work is complete, the dig site can be turned into a heritage garden for local people to enjoy.
As always, Mike and the rest of the excavation team are keen to involve local people as much as possible. With that in mind, the site is now open to the public every Friday and Saturday afternoon from 1pm-3pm so that visitors can see at close quarters just how the dig is progressing. Excavating and searching the whole site is likely to take up to five years, so who knows what fascinating finds from centuries past may be lying in the earth, waiting to be uncovered and discovered anew by the people of Howden. For more information on the project, or to volunteer, email mike@hmphotos.co.uk
Howden’s significance faded after the Reformation and today, only the Great Hall survives, known as Bishops Manor. The surrounding buildings either fell down or were demolished centuries ago. The unassuming plot of land, which has never been excavated before, is located next to Bishops Manor and, intriguingly, is Our Goole is brought to you by CreateTVT. Call 01405 819141.

FROM A POLICE Intelligence from is everything This month, Sgt David Lonsdale reminds the community how important it is that they continue to communicate their concerns with local police
“Information is vital for us to be able to task officers in the correct areas and target what really matters to you
Page 10
Issue 032-September 2018
E PERSPECTIVE: m you, the public, The last month or so has seen an increase in intelligence from members of the public about a variety of issues which affect them. Information is vital for us to be able to task officers in the correct areas and target what really matters. I ask that you please continue to make reports and provide information to us so we can take the necessary enforcement action. I often get feedback saying “Nothing will be done”, “What’s the point?” “Why should I bother?” but I can assure you that we do a lot of work in the background and all reports are looked at and assessments made. I appreciate that this can be time-consuming, but we need to get it right. Recently, information provided resulted in a number of drug warrants being executed on Kent Road, Percy Street, Eastgate and Jefferson Street. We have had positive results with several arrests. A number of drugs and stolen property have been recovered and we are awaiting court proceedings to take place on those charged. We are particularly interested in those drug suppliers using cuckooing and county
lines techniques to sell drugs. Cuckooing is when a drug dealer takes over the home of a vulnerable person and uses it as a base for drug dealing. County lines is when children are used to sell drugs. Often these children are from another country and not known to police locally. We have had reports of this tactic being used in Goole so please continue to let us know of anything suspicious or if you receive information that this is happening. Another influx of reports from the public suggested that licenced premises in Goole were selling illegal alcohol (home brews) and counterfeit cigarettes and selling these items to young children. This has resulted in five such premises having their licences revoked. A number are still pending court appearances, and we are confident that this number will increase. We seized a large quantity of beer and spirits, as well as thousands of cigarettes. One premises on Pasture Road had over 16,000 illegal cigarettes seized. Licencees have been revoked and new licencees have now taken over. We will continue to monitor this issue in the town.

Help celebrate the 50 anniversary of Goole Library and Museum
Goole Library and Museum will celebrate 50 years in November, and staff would like to collect memories of the building from the public Museum curator Debbie Hardy and librarian Hayley Nicholson are hoping that people will bring in both photographs and anecdotal
memories, which can be recorded using the library tablet. The aim is to get enough footage to make a short video which will
be played on the actual anniversary day. There will be drop-in days when people can come in and videos can be made (photos can be handed in at any time). These sessions will be held on Friday 14 September in the afternoon in the Museum, and on the morning of Saturday 15 September in the Library. If you can’t make the drop-in sessions, memories can be sent via post or email. The email address is goole.library@ eastriding.gov.uk and the postal address is: Goole Library & Museum, Carlisle Street, Goole, DN14 5DS.

Debbie Hardy explained: “We would like people to come and share their memories of the library and museum. Maybe they came to the original opening, saw a memorable exhibition, read a book, met an author or an artist - or anything they want to share with us.”
Visitors will be able to write down their memories, transcripts will be in a flip book, along with photographs brought in by the public.
Hayley added: “We would love people to bring in photographs, specifically of this building, also of the previous library, and Goole in general. “We would also like to film people talking about the building, and the previous one. Lots of people comment on the big, grand staircase that used to be here (I remember it too!) and we want to record these memories to make a short film - anything anecdotal, really.”

MIKE FISH RESIDENTIAL PROPERTY EXPERT
The costs to consider when buying a house When you buy a new home, there are some upfront fees to think about in addition to your mortgage costs. Stamp duty is one of the main upfront costs, if the purchase price of the house is more than £125,000. However, there are now some exemptions for first-time buyers. There will be a valuation fee to pay and your mortgage lender will assess the value of the property to establish how much they are prepared to lend you. The cost could be up to £1,500, although some lenders might not charge for this. Surveys can range from a basic home survey costing around £250 to a full structural survey from £600 or more. A solicitor or licensed conveyor is needed to carry out all the legal work, and fees typically start at around £450. A local search, costing around £150, will check whether there are any local plans or problems. Once your mortgage is agreed you will need to have the money for the sale transferred, which will incur an electronic transfer fee, typically about £30. If you are in a chain and are selling a property then you will also have to pay the estate agent’s fees and once the time comes, you need to consider removal costs.

Property expert David Leake of Housesetc ponders the merits of an extra bathroom
How much value does an extra bathroom add? In the shopping list of building works that can add significant value to a property, the bathroom often gets overlooked. A property with three or more bathrooms suddenly acquires an air of luxury and is reflected in the asking price of the property. A study by Direct Line Home Insurance suggested that an additional bathroom could increase the value of a property by an average of 5%, with the average cost of installing a new bathroom estimated at ÂŁ4,500.
Page 26
Estate agents are more or less unanimous that a property with four or more bedrooms must have a minimum of two bathrooms. Today’s buyers demand en-suite bathrooms as a matter of course, regarding them as an essential. Do not make the mistake of thinking of a bathroom as merely functional - a clean, stylishly designed bathroom can add significant value to a property. So, if you are thinking of selling, you should pay as much attention to the condition and number of bathrooms as you do to your kitchen and master bedroom.

Universal Credit helps if you are on a low wage by topping up your earnings. If earnings change, your top-up will change automatically to help ensure you are better off in work
Universal credit – how it helps employees It is worth taking on extra shifts or working more hours with Universal Credit, as it is based on income and not the number of hours worked You can earn a certain amount, based on your circumstances. Once above that amount, payments will be steadily reduced. Once earning enough money through work you will no longer receive Universal Credit. The DWP will automatically notify you if this is the case and your claim will close. If your earnings change each month, the amount of Universal Credit received changes automatically. If your employer or recruitment agency is on the Pay As You Earn Real Page 34
Time Information system, your Universal Credit will automatically adjust each month to take account of your earnings. If they aren’t on the system, you must report take home pay each month to the DWP to make sure you receive the correct amount of Universal Credit. Notify DWP of all changes to your circumstances. To report a change or if you have a query about your payment you should contact the helpline. Telephone: 0800 328 9344 Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm.
Help with childcare costs is available if working under 16 hours a week. Claim back up to 85% of paidout registered childcare costs, up to a monthly limit of £646 for one child, or £1,108 for two or more children. Tell the DWP when you have a firm job offer as you may be able to claim childcare costs for at least a month before the job starts. You can also claim for at least a month after your employment ends.

Whether you run or not, be part of the parkrun team!
You might be surprised to know that, even if you don’t feel able to pull on your running shoes and hit the paths around West Park, you can still be involved in Goole parkrun, the free 5k timed run that takes place every Saturday at 9am.
“Volunteers will always receive a very warm welcome,” said Ben, “and they can try out any number of roles until they find what they enjoy doing the most. None of the tasks are too stressful, and it’s just great to be part of a really friendly team.”
The parkrun is staffed entirely by volunteers at local level and run director Ben Longsden told us that even if you aren’t a keen runner, jogger or walker, there is something you can be involved with, from general marshalling to operating the timer, scanning runners’ barcodes or organising the finish funnel.
There are a number of regular Goole runners who have recently clocked up an impressive 50 parkruns, including Rob Waugh and Emma Tune, while Rob’s dad David Waugh recently racked up his 100th parkrun.
Children can also get in on the volunteering action – it’s a great way of helping youngsters develop skills and meet new people. Page 38
So whether you have ambitions to smash David’s fantastic achievement, or simply want to lend a hand, search ‘Goole parkrun’ on Facebook or email goolehelpers@parkrun.com for more information.
