Brave shark swim charity effort for Bulger case Scunthorpe local Emma Farrington, originally from the Merseyside area where two-year-old James Bulger was abducted, will be swimming with sharks this April to raise funds for The James Bulger Memorial Trust Page 8
Please mention Scunthorpe Journal when calling advertisers
April/May 2019 - Issue 13
Emma has agreed to swim with sharks outside the safety cage for a charity event taking place in Chester.
“His family have been working hard to help other families with what they have been through themselves. I want to help.”
The devastating Bulger case has a strong personal connection to Emma, who is from the same area and regularly shopped in The Strand with her mum as a child. Toddler James Bulger was sadly abducted, tortured and killed by two young boys back in 1993 after he was led away from the shopping centre.
With an initial £450 target, swimming with sharks is one of several fundraising opportunities, and Emma described this particular challenge as the most ‘daring’. Emma added: “The charity offers several fundraisers to choose from and swimming with sharks to me felt like the most challenging. “This year my resolution was to help others and make more
memories. With the swimming with sharks I’m raising money to help others and I am also making memories! At the moment I am slightly nervous but more excited than anything…for now!“ Should Emma manage not to get eaten, she says she will ‘look back at the end of next year and know that she took some real risks’. If you wish to donate to help Emma’s cause, she has a JustGiving page which can be found at: https://www. justgiving.com/fundraising/ emma-farrington6?
There have been recent controversies with the case, including a short film which was recently released without permission from James’ family. Over 25 years on, in haunting footage, James’ killers can be seen leading him away in footage captured by a surveillance camera. Speaking to the Scunthorpe Journal, Emma told us she is keen to help in memory of James. To advertise, please contact 01724 622004 or email info@createtvt.co.uk

BRAND-NEW ST. JOHN’S MARKET OPENS FOR SERVICE People of Scunthorpe can now visit the market which welcomed its first customers on Friday 22nd March North Lincolnshire Council has invested £4m to create the market in the heart of the town centre, creating a new home for traders and bringing the vacant former BHS store back into use. Pictured above, the state-of-the-art market has provided new businesses a unique opportunity to join 70 other established, independent retailers in their new home. Despite its modern re-development, the rich Lincolnshire heritage still exists via a variety of locally sourced goods including fashion, cosmetics, jewellery, accessories, hardware and music. Fresh produce is available from butchers, greengrocers and fishmongers, offering a unique experience for visitors to the town centre, six days a week from 8am to 5.30pm. A large communal space has been allocated on the first floor of the new marketplace, dedicated to

eating, drinking and socialising. The menu includes various options, including hot and cold sandwiches, Indian street food, burgers, jacket potatoes, crepes, hot puddings, tasty sweets and cakes. The Food Court is open six days a week with opening hours extending into the evening. Cllr Rob Waltham, Leader of North Lincolnshire Council, said: “The new market is a modern space which meets the needs of the traders and customers. There will be a huge range of highquality products on offer. It is fantastic to see so many traders already signed up, both existing and new.” He added: “The Food Court is a huge part of St John’s Market and will be a real destination for shoppers and visitors – it will become a central part of the development, creating a place and an experience where people can eat and drink but also meet friends and family.”

“I wanted to help because my grandads were there when they died. Everyone at the hospice is really nice and they looked after both of them.

“Mia asked me on several occasions to cut her hair short and I kept saying no, but when she told me the reason why, who was I to say no.”
Lindsey Lodge has been running since 1987, with the hospice focusing on the positives, providing patients
“We chose Lindsey Lodge Hospice because we have sadly lost loved ones in there. They all do such a fantastic job and we cannot thank them enough for all they have done. Of course it is difficult to re-pay them for their efforts, but the least we can do is donate to the hospice
Ashley also added that everyone was proud of Mia and her achievements. “We are all very proud of Mia, she is such a loving and caring little girl. She loves to help people and put a smile on their faces. She often gives her pocket money to the less fortunate as she feels she has everything she needs.” “Myself and all Mia’s family couldn’t be any prouder of Mia if we tried. She honestly has a heart of gold and I know she will keep giving to the less fortunate and do more fundraising in the future.”
Ashley told us that unfortunately her family have lost loved ones in the hospice, so this was a way of giving back to the hospice.
with relief from the symptoms, pain and stress of a serious illness to improve quality of life for them and their loved ones.
Mia has set a great example to many of her friends, and undoubtedly plenty of other young people who are looking to help out charities. From everyone at the Scunthorpe Journal, we would like to congratulate Mia on her achievements, and hope she realises how helpful her efforts have been!

Why reading is so important Many students today do not prioritise reading. Reading a wide range of texts, not just the ones they find easy, is the key to building an extensive vocabulary. This can go a long way to achieving high grades. Our column this month from Kip McGrath explains how best to get your children reading Start early. Make reading fun from an early age. Pre-school is the ideal time to introduce your child to books. Read to your children often, not just the reading scheme books from school; find books that they enjoy, use the libraries – whilst you can. Even if your child is a confident reader there is merit in reading to them up to age 11. This allows the opportunity for you to discuss the text and any new vocabulary with your child and to possibly encourage them to choose some different authors. Limit the amount of time children spend on computers; there is a growing place for technology for all of us, but allow for other recreational
Page 18
activities, including reading. Allow children to read books that they enjoy; if you read to them as well you can select books together that will extend their reading experience, allowing them to access a wider range of texts. I heard of one family who had a time on a Sunday afternoon where everyone in the family read a book. I think this is a great idea. This shows children that reading for pleasure can be enjoyed by everyone. For new author ideas, try lovereadingforkids.co.uk If your child would benefit from some professional help with their reading, do contact us on: 01724 375947 or visit our website www. tutoringscunthorpe.co.uk

17-year-old selected for senior squad Scunthorpe Ladies Rugby Union were keen to feature younger players in their final game of the season at Mellish, with the club rewarding 17-year-old Sophie Bullass with her first appearance
Sophie’s hard work ensured she was able to make her debut in the fixture, and by doing so became the first player from the SRUFC girls to feature in the senior squad.
performance, as she was awarded with the ‘back of the match’ accolade.
We spoke to Sophie following her achievement, and she suggested there were no nerves before her big day.
“Sophie made some awesome tackles and had some superb runs, she really was outstanding in her first taste of senior rugby. It was a great experience playing alongside a player I have helped coach at junior level.
“To be honest I was not nervous, I was excited to play and learn from such an experienced side.
“Sophie has been an asset to the girls’ section and I hope she inspires all our girls to play senior rugby.”
“I have been thinking of playing for the seniors the whole season, but I only knew I was playing for them a week before the game. I found out when my coach messaged me actually.”
Both the club and Sophie will now hope to keep on going into next season, following their efforts on the pitch this campaign. The club are also encouraging new players to get involved, and join the rest of the team. Be sure to visit the Scunthorpe Ladies Rugby Union page for further details.
The club also said a few words about her
