FROM A POLICE PERSPECTIVE:

Operation Cromer

This month, William Harrison from Humberside Police talks to us about the new initiative being launched in Scunthorpe to deal with anti-social behaviour as well as more serious issues such as drug-related crime, shop theft and prostitution We are excited to announce Operation Cromer, an initiative staffed by dedicated and hardworking individuals from the Neighbourhood Policing Team, Safer Neighbourhoods and North Lincolnshire Council. The initiative is designed to specifically target anti-social behaviour including street drinking on Frodingham Road, shop theft, drug dealing/ drug use and those who seek to exploit vulnerable people on West Street. The dedicated individuals from the respective teams have been supplied a Hub from the Community Safety Partnership - this is in effect a mobile base for all partners to work directly within the area and be accessible to the residents. PCs Meg Garrod and Mollie Jeans, two of the areas police officers, have already been working from the hub speaking with residents and members of the community in and around West Street. We have dedicated a PC/PCSO every single day for the next three months. The hub aims to provide our community the best possible service

Page 6

in dealing with the issues that most matter to residents and visitors alike. Not only are the staff working closely with Council Partners, we are also working closely with the town centre manager and over 80 stores within the town centre to make sure the community has the best possible shopping and leisure experience in the town. We want our community to feel as safe as possible when in and around Scunthorpe and not have to witness anti-social behaviour or those who are seeking to exploit vulnerable people. We also have some really exciting news coming within the next few weeks that will prevent thefts. We are also looking to expand a system where we can share information about wanted and persistent criminals with the security team within the Town Centre. We are also getting #OptimusCrime back, the large truck that we use to bring a mobile Police Station to your area. If anyone would like to discuss issues related to this and anything else please get in touch through 101, online reporting or the advertised Zoom sessions with our officers.

Government cash secured for a cycling revolution in Scunthorpe In the coming weeks cyclists in Scunthorpe will begin to see several changes around the town with a major programme of works designed to improve connectivity to the town centre from surrounding residential areas New cycle lanes, dedicated access routes, additional signage and secure cycle parking bays are all being introduced as part of moves to encourage more people to cycle into the town centre for work, leisure and shopping. If lockdown has decreased your fitness levels the new initiative could help you get more active. North Lincolnshire Council has received some cash from the Government’s Department for Transport’s Emergency Active Travel Fund to kickstart the project. Councillor Rob Waltham, Leader of North Lincolnshire Council, said: “Now, more than ever, it is vital that the cycling network in Scunthorpe

Page 8

town centre is updated to make it easier and safer for cyclists when travelling in and out of the area. People are being encouraged to walk and cycle more to help reduce the spread of Covid-19, whether this is travelling to work or socially. “The funding from the Government will enable us to carry out much-needed improvements between Ashby Road and Scunthorpe town centre to improve the cycling network. This will eventually link in with further developments connecting all of our towns and villages.” While this latest development is to help people travel safely by bicycle around the town, cyclists are being urged to dismount in the town centre. The council and Humberside Police have reminded

cyclists of the importance of cycling safely in Scunthorpe. Councillor Rob Waltham added: “We are investing money in new bays so that cycles can be secured and not ridden in the town centre. People should be able to feel safe walking about there and not having to avoid cyclists.” Sergeant Shane Jackson, from Humberside Police’s town centre team, said: “Making our town centre a safe and enjoyable place to be for everyone is something that’s really important to us. “We launched Operation Cromer, which will see targeted activity across the Town Ward to deal with anti-social behaviour as well as more serious issues.” You can find out more about Operation

Cromer in this month’s police column on page 6. The council has also submitted a bid for an anticipated £20million for the Future High Street Fund. This is expected to see a major development at the former market site measuring 2.5 acres. Additionally, £1million extra Government cash is being used by the council to create an urban park in Church Square while a major environmental enhancement project is being delivered across a six-mile stretch of the A18 through Scunthorpe from the retail park, along Kingsway and Queensway, all the way through to Brigg Road. For more information on the specific improvements to be made, please visit www. northlincs.gov.uk

Nurse who fought off Coronavirus is back on the front line A Scunthorpe nurse who battled Covid-19 has recovered enough to return to work Sue Snelson, 64, critical care outreach nurse specialist, spent 12 days in Scunthorpe General Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit in April/May, a ward she had managed for over 20 years. Sue said: “I was looked after by staff that I had appointed when they first started out so it was very surreal. The staff kept a diary which

Page 12

has really helped with my recovery as I didn’t know what had happened to me. At one point my family were told I was likely to die, but thankfully I turned a corner.” After four months off work, Sue, who joined the NHS in 1972, is back caring for patients and says it feels amazing: “It’s so good to be back, everyone has been so supportive and

it feels good to be looking after people again. Plus there’s only so much daytime telly you can watch!

you do exercises in a chair; it’s helping with my lung function and building my muscles back up again.”

“The recovery has been very slow and I will always have some shortness of breath as I have scarring on my lungs.”

Sue is also taking part in a clinical trial to help researchers discover more about the virus. The nationwide COVID-19 SIREN (Sarscov2 Immunity and Reinfection Evaluation) study is looking at whether prior infection with SARSCoV2 (the virus that causes COVID-19) protects against future infections with the same virus. As part of the study she’s having blood test and swabs taken every two to four weeks for the next 12 months.

Sue is currently working on a green ward, rather than in her usual role, which means she only cares for patients who have tested negative for the virus, as she explained: “I can’t go back to my role just yet as they just don’t know whether I could catch it again. I love my job though and want to get back to it as soon as I can.” As part of her recovery Sue is taking part in virtual pulmonary rehabilitation. Originally designed for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) patients, it’s now being prescribed for patients like Sue. “I do 20 minutes a day, five times a week; you wear a virtual reality headset and it’s an animation where

Sue added: “I wanted to do something to help other people and I wanted to give something back for all the wonderful care I’ve received.” Scunthorpe Journal wishes Sue all the best of luck and sends thanks to all NHS staff who are putting their life at risk to help fight COVID-19.
